This place is Florence Alabama. Very nice people in a spot you have to have heard of through word of mouth. I have lived here in Florence for eight months and just happen to hear of this little jem. I got a cheese burger and it was very good the burger itself stood out very juicy and great taste. My friend got fries and again good stuff. I saw my roommate tackle the double cheese and it was one good sized burger. So if you are hungry and want a big burger before 2 o'clock you can not go wrong at here. To describe the Shoals in one word: Staggs. When Staggs is said in conversation, a native Shoaler immediately starts drooling, and longs to make the trip over to the quaint East Florence. Stagg's embodies what is good in the Shoals. It's just a small, local, old grocery store turned kitchen with white plastic tables and chairs crammed in. The neat thing about it is if you want to eat-in you'll end up sitting with strangers--but not really strangers because this is the Shoals--and will be forced to interact with them, but most of the time its just packed with regulars who are more than cordial. With Staggs cooking up burgers we don't need a 5 Guys (regardless of how good it is). Staggs juicy, greasy burgers beat 5 Guys' anyway. In comparison, they are basically identical burger styles, but Staggs has better buns (seeded), which they throw on the grill (very good). I ordered their double bacon cheeseburger, and it was monstrous. 5 Guy's little boy burgers are like ants in the face of a roaring lion (Staggs' burgers). I got the burger with "everything" on it, and they meant it. It was basically dragged through the garden--lettuce, pickles, onions, tomato, mustard, you name it, it was on there. The cheese was just oozing down the sides of the steaming burger, and the fries were hot and crisp. Top it off with a cool, crisp, refreshing Stewart's Soda (I chose orange cream soda--excellent). This place is a gem. If you're a Shoaler and haven't experienced Staggs then you must have been living under a rock, or in Sheffield, your whole life. If you're from outside the Shoals, then make the trip because they're the best burgers for miles around. Their hours are 5:30 am to 2 pm, so get up early and have breakfast too. Their biscuits are homemade right there in the shop and are almost too good. If you were to cut out little pieces of the clouds in heaven and bake them, then you would get Staggs' biscuits. One Thursday night I heard Staggs made chocolate gravy on Friday mornings (only). And I had never had their breakfast. That settled it. I woke up the next morning and sped all the way there. I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit and a side of biscuits and chocolate gravy. Holy Heavens! The chocolate gravy was like the inside filing of a chocolate pie (you know, the real sweet southern ones). It nearly knocked me to the floor. It's served in a bowl along side your biscuit and a slice of butter is resting on top of the brown puddle, slowly melting into it. If I were in town more I would go here every Friday for their biscuits and chocolate gravy. About the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit? In short, it's the best in town. read more

What an outstanding, unique, local place for a great burger!! I loved that the seating options are long tables with 10-12 folding chairs so the diners actually get to meet new people or at least sit with random folks. We stop here for breakfast everytime we're in Florence. I usually get the two egg breakfast with bacon, biscuits/gravy and a side of grits. On this most recent trip, the food wasn't quite as good as i remember it being, but it was still a really good diner breakfast. The thing that sets this place apart is the sense of community and lack of pretension. It just feels like a great neighborhood diner where everyone knows one another. My office went here for lunch the other day to welcome in our new graphic designer. I had never been before (never heard of it, actually) and so was interested to see how it was. It's basically a cook to order burger place. You tell them what you want, go sit down and wait for them to bring it to you. Once you're done eating you go up and tell the cashier what you just ate and pay for it. The food (I had a cheeseburger & fries) was really good actually, and everyone elses looked great too. Some of my co-workers had a BLT, a salad, and burgers. Those of us who had been there before told stories of the local celebs that come through for some great food...the mayor of Florence for one. If you want a burger with much better quality than fast food for about the same price you should visit this divey little joint. Definitely not fancy- "hole in the wall" appearance, plastic folding tables and chairs, walk up to the 'kitchen' to tell them your order, tell them what you got at the register. I placed two orders, bacon cheeseburger and fries and hamburger and fries. I had them in less than 5 min. The decently sized burger patty is obviously man made. Not greasy and tastes like real meat. Sesame seed bun was soft and fresh. With everything includes mayo, a little ketchup, shredded lettuce, a slice of tomato, onion slices, and pickle chips. My coworker said the bacon is delicious and crispy. My burger and fries was only $6.01 and really filled me up. Funniest part was when I brought it back to the office a couple of the men were drooling over the "That's gotta be Stagg's" burger. Staggs is the BEST! If you want a good meal no matter what you order, you can't go wrong with Staggs! My favorite is their Chocolate Gravy & Biscuits! My husband & I make it a point to stop in every Friday for the Chocolate Gravy & Biscuits! The staff is wonderful and the place is very clean and down to earth. Yes, if you decide to eat there, you will most likely share a table with a stranger, but it isn't as bad as it seems cause everyone is so nice and the tables are long and your not elbow to elbow with them.
