In addition to the service, Shirley knows her stuff and she treats you like a long lost friend. I had been going through some personal issues at the time of my appointment and she just made me feel so much better inside and outside. So I've been contacted by a few yelpers who are wondering if I still get peels...The answer is yes and I posted some pics to show how my skin has progressed. The prognosis on my skin is, I still get acne, but what you see is a huge difference between the bulging redness of my acne to now the very subtleness of the coloring and pigmentation on the skin. the nice thing is now, we don't do as many peels as often b/c of how effective the treatments have been from the past and I hardly wear coverup to disguise it b/c it goes away in a day or so. This place is the best kept secret in beauty. Who knew that there was an actual solution to problems unsolvable by every other method! Thank God for STH Spa and Shirley (the woman who makes it all happen)! THE ISSUE: My skin has been breaking out in a disgusting, embarrassing, non-stop way. It was actually leading me into a depression of sorts. The blemishes were not manageable, treatable, and a diagnosis for the onset was unclear. Covering them heavily became my only option, leaving me feeling like I should be working at a MAC counter, rather than being the fresh-faced beauty that I have been my entire life. Although I haven't been to Shirley in over three years, I still refer her to everyone I know for skin and waxing services. I only had the pleasure of utilizing Shirley for brazilian waxing. I had no reason to stop going to her other than making personal sacrifices on my spending habits when buying a home. I had to cut back somewhere and even though I would prefer to get waxed, I can do the maintenance myself. If I could, I would return to Shirley in the blink of an eye. I always felt like I was cheating Shirley because she made me feel so comfortable, yes even while getting a brazilian wax, that I would open up to her and we would discuss everything going on in my life during my sessions. I used to joke with her and tell her she was my personal therapist and that she should charge me extra for all the listening and thoughtful advice she provided. I think this is one of the qualities that makes Shirley so special. She is genuine in her concern for each of her clients personally and professionally. She consistently goes to seminars and researches the highest quality products to offer her clients the best possible service she can. She has two types of wax that she uses. I believe the one that best suited my skin was a french wax. I'll explain it the best to my ability, it grabs at the hair and not at the skin. It didn't require the use of the strips, you just peel up a little corner and peel it off. She used a combination of the two different waxes on different parts of my skin that the wax was better suited for. For a lack of better words, I thought it was awesome that Shirley took the time to get to know my vajay so well. When I first started going to Shirley we when she was finished with the waxing, she would give you a mirror and leave the room so you could check to make sure she got everything. I personally eliminated this step because every time I would check she had did a perfect job. She never missed any hair and I felt why waste her time lol. She ends the wax by rubbing on a soothing moisturizing oil that makes the skin feel really soft. I've been to a LOT of dermatologists/skincare specialists, etc. and Shirley by far has been one of the most thorough and informative. I've received some peels from Shirley for acne/scarring, and each time she has explained step by step what is happening, while always checking at each juncture how I feel after the last application. I must start this review by saying that I can only review Shirley as a person and not this business, but she has easily earned more than 5 stars in my book. I purchased a gift certificate here for my girlfriend with the intentions of sending her to a massage spa. My girlfriend pointed out to me that they don't offer massages and there wasn;t really anything at the spa she wanted. I called Shirley to explain my situation, and Shirley not only did all she could to ensure my money was refunded, she made multiple attempts to be in touch with me to make sure that I wasn't dissatisfied. We had some connection issues, what with being on different coasts, but by the time we were able to talk, Shirley made it clear that what she wants more than anything is to treat someone as she'd want to be treated. I can't speak for too many spas. I know most places are sticklers with gift certificates, usually situations like this end with "too bad, you should have done more research before you purchased" and it is so so SO refreshing to know there are people like Shirley out there who don't want you to be stuck paying for something you ultimately didn't want. Shirley and I were able to work everything out and she is just such a lovely person. Her concern for my satisfaction was the primary focus of every conversation we had. So while I can't vouch for her services, I would recommend her to everyone based solely on the fact that she's the type of business owner that's becoming so increasingly rare, the one who ultimately cares more about her customer's satisfaction than anything. Hell, it's rare to see a PERSON like that, let alone one who owns a business. I have acne since starting puberty at 13 so I have been dealing with horrible pimples for 10+ years. I have tried countless OTC creams, prescription creams, estheticians, and facial spas but I finally hit the jack pot with Shirley! I first went to Shirley for wax before my wedding. BEST WAX EVER! She is so meticulous and doesn't miss a thing. She even lets you double check to make sure she didn't miss a single hair. So here goes my first review! I had been looking for help with my face. I had tried over the counter stuff and some more expensive treatments from department stores. My biggest problem was melasma also known as the mask of pregnancy : ( After having my two children I could not get rid of the dark spots on my cheeks no matter what I used. I asked my niece to research where I could get help. She came up with three different places. She told me about all three but said that this place got really high reviews and that she recommended I try this one. It was a little difficult to figure out the phone system Shirley has going on at her spa. When you call you will get a recording. Leave your information and they will contact you. She is usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. She does not answer the phone because when she is with a client, she is completely focused on them and does not allow for interruptions. When you get there, if she is with a client a "Do Not Disturb" sign will be on the door but she is punctual and will be out to greet you in the waiting room when she is done. The first time I went, Shirley greeted me like an old friend. She asked me point blank why I was there and she looked at my face. She made me feel really comfortable because she informed me that she had been working with another client and had seen great results. She said she knew that she could help me and that my melasma was not as bad as I probably thought it was. I had never had any type of peel so I was a little scared because of all the bad things people write on line about their bad experiences. Shirley took a lot of time looking at my skin and telling me what needed to be done and explaining the whole process. The peelings have been great! I have seen great results on my face. I told my friends about it and they were skeptical saying that my skin might get damaged or that peels don't make that much of a difference on the face. After having my two peels, my friends constantly check out my face and comment on how great it looks. I still have melasma but it is definitely lightening a lot sooner than I expected it would. I had to put a primer, then concealer, and then my makeup in order to cover the dark spots. Now, I can just put the foundation and skip all of the other steps. When I would wear blush, it didn't really look good because the melasma was being highlighted and the spots actually looked darker. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking to improve their complexion. I am writing about my melasma but I know that people who have other problems such as acne have gotten amazing results from Shirley. But she is also smart and has a holistic approach to beauty so she can pick through all the fads and instinctually know what's junk and what isn't. And, in turn, she educates you about it.
