Sam is the rudest employee I've ever encountered at this store. I live nearby and visit frequently. As soon as I entered the store and asked for a simple request, Sam answered in an extremely agitated way and I could instantly tell he didn't want to help. I'd recommend hiring people who actually have decent social skills but understand that it's slim pickings for quality employees. read more

Quite a large selection but staff has been unfriendly 4/5 times I've been there. I prefer to walk a little farther to Cole Hardware on Polk street, as they are much friendlier and have the same large selection. Also feels like Fredericksen is slightly more expensive than Cole. read more

This is a solid neighborhood hardware store that you can get everything you need for the house. I'm impressed with the variety of things they have in addition to the standard hardware store items: kitchenware, glassware, office supplies, patio furniture, bathroom supplies and other household items. It's essentially a fusion of Walgreens, Target, Staples, and Home Depot in one. I found when many stores were out of cleaning products due to supply issues I could always find them here probably because many people don't' know they sell cleaning products. They also rent steam cleaners for the carpet. The back room has a seasonal section selling patio furniture during the summer or Xmas decorations during the fall. There are 3 store cats that roam the establishment. They don't show their face nearly as much as Lilly the Michael's Liquor store cat which is located catty corner (pun intended!) to Fredericks but whenever I see one it's always exciting. read more

Had to go get some paint at Fredericksen's in what should have taken a half hour took nearly two hours because the temperamental clerk at the counter. He is slow moving -- so slow it looks like a slo mo movie unfolding in front of your eyes. I asked him to match paint and which involves scanning your paint chip, giving you the samples and having you choose and then him filling the paint order. Not too complicated huh? Well apparently too complicated for him even though he's done this for years. In the meantime while you wait and fear for a ticket on your car, he gives you unwanted earfuls of how this is a free service -- over and over again. If it were not for this store's proximity, I would avoid this paint shop entirely. read more

We live out of town and stumbled across this 100+ year old store. Loved it! We purchased a holiday gift and enjoyed the miniature amusement park set in front of the store. Having this store in our neighborhood is so convenient - definitely makes our lives easier, thank you. This review is for John who is very friendly, knowledgeable and has the best attitude. Most importantly, he is very helpful and patient. Our heartfelt thanks for his help today. Connie is also great - she is very knowledgeable and friendly! Not mentioning any names but unfortunately there are two staff members here who are super cold, aloof, unfriendly, and extremely unhelpful. So sad. If you come often enough you probably know who I am referring to. But just stay away from them and don't let them affect your day - just look for someone else to help you. Whats up with the poor customer service and attitude from the cashiers? Cashiers who cant leave their post to help a customer find screws but can tell them to "look for it on their own." Because that's good customer service. :/ Two older white males wearing a pink bandana / American flag for face coverings on 9/28 noon time feel the need to belittle a woman who obviously doesn't know how to find specific screws in an AISLE full of endless options. Note to management (if this exists) - please rid these inefficient, unhelpful employees and replace with ones who are willing to help in an industry that is purely built on customer service. I've visited many times to buy tools, toilet plunger, etc. Always ask for help if you want to save time and/or can't find something. She KNOWS!!!! her stuff, cares, and didn't hurry me through the necessary explanation to accomplish this project. My father recently went to Fredericksons Hardware and had a horrible/racist experience. The cashier made a troubling remark on Thursday, February 23, implying that my father was afraid of immigration authorities (ICE) after my father asked the local news channel to kindly avoid having him on TV. This had nothing to do with our transaction, and the inappropriate comment he made caused major discomfort. He repeated himself more than once and later stated, "it wouldn't hurt the business," even though my father had warned that he hoped they got what he said on Live Tv. It's astonishing that remarks of this nature are made at a place of business, it is truly depressing. All customers should receive inclusive and courteous treatment. In order to guarantee that everyone is welcome, I hope the administration takes this matter seriously. I had a very bad interaction with an employee named Sam. He told me I couldn't return an item, although it certainly was eligible for return. He only begrudgingly made the return after II pushed back. He was very rude over the whole return process for no reason. read more

I won't be back. On a prior trip to the store, there was a very helpful gentleman in his 40/50s who provided some good tips on selecting paint colors. Today, I went back to the store at about 5:30, which I thought was plenty of time, since Google says they are open till 7 (despite having separate operating hours from the Hardware side, they don't bother to list their businesses separately). Well, they're actually open till 6. But on top of that, when I went up to the person at the counter at 5:45 to ask for a few paint samples (I was the only person in the store), I was told that they stopped mixing paint at 5:30. I said, "So I have to come back?", to which the guy with the black gauges in his ears said, "It's just our policy". Meanwhile, not 5 minutes before, I'd overheard him say (not realizing the context at the time) to another person who apologized for asking for a sample after 5:30, "Don't worry about it, we just have that in place so we don't get a bunch of orders right as we're shutting down". Literally told another customer that it was fine, gave them the sample at 5:40 while there were other people in the store, and then basically couldn't be bothered when I was the only person there. I get the reason for the policy, and if there were a bunch of people in the store all asking for 5 gallon orders, fine. But he could have easily helped me in the 15 minutes before closing - could have said, "We normally have this policy for this reason, but since you're the only one here, I can do this, but if there were a bunch of people asking, I couldn't". Could have told me he could only do one, etc. Instead he treated me totally differently than he had the guy who knew of the policy and still asked him to disregard it. And then told me that I could reach out to Google regarding the fact that the hours are listed incorrectly. I have another Benjamin Moore place 4 blocks from my house, but drove here because of the service from the other person. Won't be making that mistake again. read more

Went there on a Saturday morning, the guy was more dumb than driftwood on a lake. First he does not have a quart of paint in an exterior color, so he tries to upsell me to a gallon. I say come on guy I am simply trying to touch up an exterior window frame. Then he says the only paint he has is low sheen. I say I don't care I just want a quart of anything white. He then explains the shipping of products has really been back ordered and that's why selection is limited. I think this guy was back ordered and this is all Frederick-sons got. After all this he tells me it will take 15 minutes to mix because the machines need cleaning. Walked in at 9am and walked out at 9:30am for a quart of white paint. Minimum wage for this guy is just too much. It could be the paint fumes but can't say for sure. read more

I journeyed into Fredericksen Hardware to find some grill cleaner.... 30 minutes later I reappeared with a bag full of stuff! This place is a pretty classic old school hardware store. They have a huge selection of just about everything you could ever want. They have several different "rooms" with each playing different music. The staff was friendly and I was able to find everything I needed. Would definitely recommend checking this place out! read more

Went in to get spare keys. The woman at the front desk asked to follow the "key" signs on the floor, which took me to the back. I rang the bell and a nice lady came in just minutes. I gave her my keys, and she made two spare copies in just a couple of minutes for $2 each. When i went to pay in the front, the cashier asked me to keep the receipt until i made sure the keys worked. I came back home and checked immediately; while one worked, the other was a little hard. I took it back the same day, and the lady not only fixed the key, she also made two extra keys for no charge, since i had to come back. The four star is for the going back; otherwise i would have given them a straight five! read more

This is the kind of neighbourhood hardware store that I really like. It's stuffed to the gills with a good hardware selection and as a bonus has a really good housewares section and new Patio/BBQ area. And it's been around well before I first moved to SF 20 years ago. However, it doesn't appear to have the "hands on" service model or the really full selection (especially for older Albany homes) that I have come to appreciate at Pasttime in El Cerrito, hence only 4 Stars. And it is a "bit" pricier than I'm used to. But I suppose that if you can afford to live in the Marina...... read more

We went in here today looking for paint samples and brochures for ideas. We were looking for both interior and exterior paint. The guy who came over and offered to help us was awesome. He explained important favors to consider when choosing a paint as well as took time to explain how the paint color changes in different light as well as how textured surfaces can affect the paint color as well. When we've made our selections a we'll definitely come here to purchase our paint. read more
