It seems to be a one man operation, plus someone running the front office, so if you are in a hurry you probably need to let them know.

And, these were inherited knives from my mom so who knows how old those things are! As usual, I just bought a new knife and ignored the relics...but I was inspired by watching the latest Knives Out movie to take action (really). Went on Yelp and did a location search for knife sharpening. Oakland Sharp came up (less than 10 minutes from my house) and reviews were excellent. I went to the website and easily scheduled a drop-off for MLK Day. I brought over 4 long knives (blades are 7"-9" long). We discussed one I wanted to get the handle tightened but, since it turns out it's RIVETED, no can do. Which is fine; it's only a little loose. All the others were very straightforward, and I didn't have to lose too much metal to get them sharp again. Plus, the turnaround time was 48 hours and the methods of payment were very convenient, from check or cash to Venmo! IMPORTANT NOTE: Professional knife sharpening is not reserved for just famous brand name knives and implements. All your tools should be kept sharp - it's safer for you in the long run. I asked how often knives should get sharpened, and he said, if heavily used, once every 12-18 months. If not heavily used, every 2 years. I'm excited for the following: 1. To bring Grant more knives and scissors for sharpening 2. Buy more knife sleeves (this is important) 3. Spread the word about his friendly, great service and pricing 4. Slice a tomato and not have it get all mushy

Excellent service and quality sharpening work from Grant. All of my knives are crazy sharp now!read more

So I stooped over the counter finally and asked him if he could help me. He was very gruff and asked what I wanted I told him I needed a key for my mailbox. He asked me to show me what he needed. I didn't know if he wanted me to come around the counter because he wasn't getting up. It didn't seem appropriate to go on the other side of the counter, so I stayed where I was and didn't know if he was being funny or what his issue was. And then I showed him the different parts to the box that I need and he said I would need a whole new lock to put into the box. So he gets up and gets the package of the set that I need. It shows a price on the package, but he said that's not the right price. I asked him so what is the right price and it was about a dollar more so. I said that's fine. I just wanted to get what I needed and leave at that point. Because he wasn't very pleasant at all. I told him I could pay with my debit card. So he had the machine in front of him and told me to tap my card which I did. Then I was surprised when he asked me for my pin number . Thank goodness, I wasn't intimidated and gave it to him. Instead, I leaned over Covered the number number area with my hand and put in my code myself. I just thought it was so odd and rude of him to ask me for my pin . I'll never go back there again. He seemed very bothered to have me in his shop, was so reluctant to get up from his stool, and it was very awkward when he asked me for my pin number.

AND Home Depot couldn't make a special mailbox key. So I finally wised up to the idea of going to a REAL key maker/ smith, just the good ole days with father as a child. It's been so long, I wasn't sure that they even existed anymore. But here this place is. A throwback to the 1980s if you will. The place definitely has that run down feel where REAL people do REAL work fixing things. The gentleman who helped me appeared tired and ill but nonetheless he soldiered on with basically one hand made like 3 sets of keys for me. And they ALL work!!! [applause] These people use the good ole grinder and have hundreds and hundreds of stock key blanks. AND they are cheaper than Home Depot. Suffice it, I'll only be coming here from now on to make any keys!!! And you should too!!!!

Ended up with a 8" chef knife by K Sabatier (French) and 2 Japanese knives, each for under $200 each. I think given the quality, beauty, and sharpness of these knives, they were great buys. They also ship, in case you're only doing carry-on luggage and are from out of town. When you buy a knife from them, you get a card for one free sharpening. They do stone sharpening (no machining), so it's pretty hard core. You can ship it to them if you're out of town. The staff were all courteous and knowledgeable. It's quite a crazy selection so it was good to have their expertise. If you're new to knives, I recommend also allowed any extra $50-$100 for accessories, like a hinoki cutting board and/or honing rod. They do sell high-end versions of these, or you can purchase something on Amazon for cheaper. Regardless, once you get high-quality knives like these, you'll want to take care of them by having more forgiving cutting boards and keeping them sharp with honing rods. Bathrooms: None.
