Holy gluten-free donut heaven. I'm writing this review as I lay in bed in a post-donut bliss stupor, wondering how long I should wait before I walk over to Stan's to get another one. Moist and flavorful inside, with the slightly crispy outside found only in the most perfectly crafted cake donuts, I questioned my boyfriend repeatedly as to whether he was absolutely certain it was gluten-free. Then there was the chocolate glaze: a thin layer of creamy-not-sugary dark chocolate goodness, complementing the donut itself without upstaging it. Coming from NY, I can't help but compare. This place is just as good as Doughnut Plant in NYC, which is good news. I had the toffee donut, which was not SUPER sweet but still pretty damn sweet. Not too much flour and just the right amount of sugar. It is still pricey for a specialty donut -- $3.90 after tax. But I guess it's worth the size. Was pretty bummed that this is a chain, since I expect great places to stand on their own. But that's okay; can't wait to try all the other donuts the next time I visit! read more

It's 2017, and people around here go GaGa for doughnuts. It's the new-ish food trend that has been getting higher and higher in demand as the years go on. When I was growing up, when I thought of doughnuts, I thought Dunkin and Krispy Kreme. Nowadays, everyone and their mothers are opening up doughnut shops and the people LOVE it. Personally, I'm not extremely crazy about them, but I did stop by Stan's in Wicker Park one day to see what all the fuzz was about. To keep things short, it's aight. Like I said, I'm not one for doughnuts so obviously my opinion doesn't hold much merit to objectively judge such an establishment, but I do appreciate the creativeness the bakers put into with this concept. The doughnuts come in all shapes in form. There's your original old-fashioned one flavor type of little pastries, and then there are the more inventive, custom type of flavors and designs, placing the dessert on a much higher scale. I had a jelly doughnut from there which I had no problem with, very tasty and satisfying. Aside from doughnuts, Stan's got a whole lot of other sweet stuff to keep you happy and jittery for days. Fresh brewed hot and iced coffee is sold here along with milkshakes (provided with a cute lil doughnut on the straw) and their famous frozen hot chocolate, another item I had when I went to Stan's, it was pretty darn good. So if you got a sweet tooth, Stan's is right up your alley. Stay for the lovely smell of dough and sweets, or get some goodies to go. It's a good time nonetheless! read more

We don't eat doughnuts very often, but periodically I'll pick one up for J and I to split. Like all fashionable "donut" shops, they are large and expensive. Last time I picked up an apple fritter, and that was very sweet, but very good. Service can be a bit slow, especially if someone in line orders $50 worth of food and drinks, which happens often. Plenty of room to socially distance as you make your way to the counter to place your order, so wear your mask and bring your appetite. read more

Decent donuts, decent coffee! My boyfriend and I came in after having dinner wanting something sweet and shared a red velvet doughnut covered in chocolate and sprinkles. I love donuts, and Stan's Donuts in particular because not only does it have what feels like an unlimited array of equally tempting options, but the "boring" donuts actually taste nice. You know that a bakery is great and not just good when the most boring donut is also a good choice. I really put Stan's to the test at 7:00pm on a weekday when I purchased a coffee and a Coconut donut. They had about one third of the flavors they'd typically offer in the morning, and only the gluten free version of my favorite--Lemon Pistacio. When I asked the lady at the register if I would be disappointed with the gluten free version of the Lemon Pistacio she was v honest and blunt. However, she did say that their gluten free donuts are not "bad" tasting, and I completely trust that statement even though I am not willing to try one! My donut was moist and the flakes of coconut were fresh. FRESH. I could not believe that I was biting into a fresh donut at the end of the day! The eggnog custard filled cronut was the all star of my batch. Flaky donut layers with creamy egg nog custard squidging out the sides. Yum. The Boston cream was also good. I didn't love the peppermint bark like I thought i would. The chocolate cake donut has a layer of ganache or some peppermint chocolate sauce over it, and it didn't really do it for me. The lemon pistachio was ok, but not great. I had a peppermint mocha, and I'd skip that next time. Nothing special and too sweet for my taste. I would definitely go back. I have heard numerous raving reviews about this spot, so when we got off the Blue Line at Damen, I just had to push my friends over here and check it out since it's just right around the corner, talk about convenient! Their doughnuts have any possible combination you crave, which vary in price depending on the color of the label. I would highly suggest splurging a little more than you would for a doughnut, because I treated myself to a Nutella Banana Pocket and a Lemon Pistachio, and I donut regret it at all! As for the shop itself, it is hard to miss. With a large and bright sign, along with the sweet aroma arising from all their different doughnuts, and the wide windows displaying a crowded interior, this place will definitely entice you to view their selections. I can honestly say this is the best shake I have had in a long time. It has the perfect balance and isn't too sweet. The mini donut of the straw is the cutest thing ever, thought the actual mini donut was too sugary. The donuts were moist and the dough was like none other. Customer service was exceptional! Normally I would buy a box of mixed donuts whenever I find a shop, but I only purchased the lemon pistachio old fashioned (since I've seen it everywhere) and my husband got the regular glazed old fashioned. The flavor profile of mine was good, it wasn't as great as I thought it would be. The glaze, I wish tasted a little more like pistachio rather than being too sweet. But when I got a little more to the middle part it tasted much better because the lemon was standing out more. Artfully designed with large windows facing the street and a small seating area to the right of a counter and kitchen where doughnuts are fried fresh to restock supplies nearly fourteen hours each day it was with one eye towards indulgence but the other on an upcoming brunch that I perused the days options and eventually settling on an even half dozen my pastries were soon boxed to the tune of $14 after tax and tip, all but the two filled options still warm with the fritter still too hot to handle without a napkin. Beginning first with a yeasty raised twist beneath a shiny lacquer tinged with cinnamon and then progressing to the reference standard ring of blueberries amidst savory cake infused with buttermilk it was with high hopes that I moved along to the aforementioned fritter and with crispy edges plus loads of apples it seemed as though things couldn't possibly get better - an assumption that would soon be proved wrong by the cookie-butter filled pocket and a sweet-meets-savory buttermilk bar that somehow managed to remain balanced despite a quartet of toppings including briny bacon that came across up front only to dissipate in smoky notes of pecan and surprisingly natural tasting flavors of maple syrup on the finish. read more

This is really a 2.5 star review. Stan's makes some great donuts. Service has always been helpful and friendly. However, their failure to publicly disclose a key polarizing ingredient in over half of its donuts knocks Stan's down a few stars. I learned after maybe a dozen visits that their yeast raised donuts are made with lard. If given a choice, I wouldn't eat products made with this ingredient. Also, I took some vegetarian friends here who ate non-vegetarian donuts on my recommendation (which I never would have given had I known what was in the donuts). I would never suggest that Stan's change its recipes, but disclosing its use of lard in advance would give customers the ability to make an informed choice. read more

I went to the Damen location today, August 2 at approximately 5:45pm. I ordered 2 glazed, 2 chocolate glazed, and 1 chocolate old fashioned. The donuts were plopped in a bag and I was sent on my way. I thought the presentation was terrible considerinng all of the chocolate was left inside the bag as I pulled the donuts out. I came to Yelp, to leave a positive Yelp review, as the donuts were delicious, only to find that they do serve multiple donuts in a box, not a bag! I would have said something at the store had I known there was a different option. Needless to say, I am sorely disappointed. It is not acceptable to package five gooey donuts in a paper bag with one piece of parchment-like paper. I understand one or two donuts being packaged in a bag, but not five! I stopped in Stan's today for the first time... Co-workers had brought in a dozen early last week and I wanted to check it them out first hand as I am a donut aficionado. I read some of the below reviews and was amazed by the three stars until I read them. I'm old school and applaud the employee of a donut shop does who not know the difference between vegan and vegetarian. As far as I'm concerned Stan's sits in the very top tier of fried dough royalty in Chicago, flanked only by Dinkel's, Old-Fashioned Donut... okay I'll throw in Donut Vault as well but what a pain in the ass they are. I ordered a chocolate glazed, a jelly and a double espresso. The chocolate glazed featured super soft yeast risen dough with a perfect amount of resistance and chew... Yeast donuts simply do not get better than this. Perfect. Solid gold. 10. The jelly was magnificent also. And guess what? The inside tasted like jam! Not like some sort of weird jelly/pie filling hybrid... Also a pure 10. I bumped into the owner Rich Labriola (whom I don't know from Adam) and he explains that they take great pride in their yeast starters which give their donuts such a luxurious mouth feel. The guy definitely takes pride in his work. And I guess he has bean a bread man his whole life so he gets it. As I mentioned before I from the donut old school and am not into all of the games played at places like Glazed and Infused who I have recently had to knock down a star because their donuts have been cold and stale-ish. Big Star + Stan's + Violet Hour = this intersection is the trifecta. Tacos, donuts, and cocktails. If only I could give up my life and live under the Blue Line. It moved fast though, since there were a few people working behind the counter, all working quickly and maintaining a friendly, upbeat exterior. I ordered the Pistachio Glazed, Lemon Curd, and an Old Fashioned. It's probably the best $8 I ever spent. All three were some of the best dontus I've had. I constantly say that Old Fashioned Donuts on the south side are the best and can't be beaten. Well, I don't know about that...Stan's are mouthwatering sugar bombs and everyone needs to try these! The inside of the store is cute. There are some seats, and I like the wall shelving with the many colorful Kitchenaid mixers. But wow, those babies are expensive, and there are 9 in the wall. I quickly did the math. 9 mixers x ~$300 each = $1800 in Kitchenaid mixers JUST for decoration! Where is this Stan? I want donuts, but I want some money too. I jokingly told my friend Aimee M that I probably wouldn't make it home with these. Ok, so I wasn't joking. Before I even got to I-90 to begin my trek home, I devoured the Old Fashioned. Just as I was getting back home to Plainfield, I had to wait for a freight train. I ate most of the Pistachio Glazed (my favorite of the three). I am a yeast donut girl through and through and Stan's is my kind of donut shop. Stan's has your classics - your old fashioned and your glazed. I tried the apple fritter and was happy with the sugary snap it should have. For the fat kid living inside all of us, they have creative options too. I have sampled (and loved) the bacon pecan, the lemon pistachio, the Chicago mix, the captain crunch, the nutella, and the chocolate banana pocket one too. I didn't eat all those donuts whole of course - I wouldn't have fit on the plane. The staff was super friendly and I hear their coffee is good too.
