Did Chicago need another high end donut place? Probably not. Am I happy Stan's doesn't care about that and decides to bring So. Cal donut goodness to the Windy City? Yes! I love the various donut shops that have spotted the Chicago landscape recently and Stan's belongs in the top-tier. What really stood out to me about Stan's was the proper treatment of classics and some creativity without going too over the top. I sampled from the biscoff and banana pocket, glazed pretzel twist, buttermilk bar, and lemon pistachio old fashioned. The first two were yeast donuts and the latter two cake donuts providing different forms and toppings with each choice. My fav. was the biscoff and banana pocket, it was the soft, fluffy, chewiness one wants with a yeast donut with a nice amount of filling to it. The pretzel twist didn't work out quite as well as the twisting led to a bread-y, crust-y layer that took away from the yeast donut. I liked both cake donuts but thought that the lemon pistachio glaze on the old fashioned was a refreshing with a bit lighter of a flavor that worked really well. Stan's also has the classics you'd like to see (like sprinkles) that get left behind at some of the other high end establishments. Great place. read more

SO GOOD. Between Stan's and Glazed and Infused across the street, I'd have to go with Stan's! They have a larger selection of donuts, and given that both sell expensive, gourmet donuts, I think that Stan's are just flat-out higher quality. It's right down the street from where I'm working this summer, so I will probably be here much more, but so far my favorite donut is the Cinnamon Sugar donut. The flavor was amazing, and I the texture of the doughnut was just awesome - not too heavy, but not too light at the same time. As expected though, the donuts here are quite pricey. I paid around $5.50 for a small coffee (Intelligentsia) and a single donut. While definitely worth it, I probably won't be doing this every day. I've experienced so much better from other places. These just aren't that great. Let me tell you, I so wanted to be a fan of this place. They're open late (fuggin' awesome) and I loved that they had the balls to open up directly across the street from Glazed and Infused. I call them The Dueling Donut Shops. I like to picture the owners standing on their adjacent street corners glaring at one another and shaking their fists every morning (spoiler alert: I've yet to see this happen, sadly). Anyways... I've had their donuts on 5 different occasions and have been underwhelmed every time. I was excited that they were marketing themselves as a "mom & pop" style donut shop upon opening because this $3.50 designer donut trend in Chicago is getting ridiculous. But as someone that grew up on great mom & pop donuts I can assure you that these aren't even close. And still with the $3-$4 price tag? No thanks. They offer an awesome selection. They serve great gelato. The store is cute. The service is friendly. But if I'm being honest, Donut Vault and Do-Rite kick their ass in the donut department. They never look or taste fresh to me. I absolutely hated their chocolate glazed. The icing was like eating those cheap Hostess chocolate donuts you get in a plastic sleeve at the gas station. So waxy. The filled pocket donuts are dense and taste like they're day-old. The only thing I've liked from there is the cinnamon pretzel. It bums me out that they're mediocre. I picked up a half dozen donuts from Stan's today. It was my first time, and though the donuts are not cheap, you pay for what you get. I was very happy with the seasonality of options, the abundance even later on a Sunday afternoon, and the efficiency of service. The bizmarks (particularly the blueberry) were amazing, and the pistachio glazed old fashioned was on a par with the Doughnut Vault's (my all time favorite for old fashioneds). Stopped into Stan's after brunch and ordered some donuts & coffee to go. Yes, after brunch. Don't judge. I ordered a Lemon Pistachio Old Fashioned and a turtle cake donut. Just had the pistachio and OMG, probably one of the best donuts I've tasted. It's still deliciously moist from when I bought it yesterday.Thank goodness I didn't bring the turtle cake, I would have devoured both! It kind of irked me that you get 2.5 seconds to review the menu and order what you think you want. This made me miss a bacon donut and a beignet! Every morning the temptress shows herself in form of amazing smelling fried dough as my friends and I walk to the line. Can you not? We finally gave in one afternoon on the way home because we were just not having a good day. Stepped in and saw tons and tons of yummy looking donuts. A nutella and chocolate glazed ones were bought and devoured. On that day, it was pretty good and it made us feel better because how could you not with fried items and chocolate goodness? Unfortunately, I was disappointed. $42 for a dozen donuts that tasted like sugar coated day old bread. It was very dry and stale.

Stan's donut would be a total treat for me because it's sweet and a bit pricey. But it's worth it because the donuts are so soft light and fluffy. The glaze donuts are so good! I love it and I would like to try their gelato some day. I have to be willing to shovel out at least $5 and up for some so I'll have to save my pennies for that gelato someday. read more

Another worthy competitor in the Chicago doughnut market. The line was kind of long but it moved quickly do to the cashier taking orders and the other staff scurrying around to fill orders. I got the banana nutella doughnut and it was delicious but no banana could be seen or flavor detected. Stans has so many different donuts to pick from its insane (but the blueberry fritter is the best!!!). Unreal!!! The donuts here are so fresh and tasty that nothing compares. The quality is top notch. Their fritters are the best around. While I don't love the location I've made the trip several times to enjoy the coffee and donuts. I'd go with any sprinkled donut, the fritter (daily flavor), and a cup if coffee. The blueberry fritter and lemon pistachio old fashioned were my favorites. The Nutella Pocket was satisfying. My favorite are: biscoff banana pocket, peanut butter pocket and the biscoff pocket. I lived in Chicago for a month earlier this year and I went to stan's donuts at least 6 times. For someone who doesn't like donuts to go 6 times in 30 days is quite an extensive amount, but it goes to show how good these donuts are. After 8pm, they have a special: 6 donuts for $10. Donut perfection. And not your usual coffee dipping donut faire. Instead each donut had a good bite, a nice balance of flavors, and are overall delicious. Yeah, some of them are super sweet (dream-cicle bar, I'm lookin at you) but some, like the lemon curd (I forgot the name) is by far my favorite donut ever. It's tart, and sweet, and chewy and slightly messy. Of course the old fashioned ones are good too. The pistachio glazed old fashioned is worth trying, and a worthy contender for coffee dipping if that's your style. I have a lot of experience with stan's AND glazed+infused donuts-- mainly because my partner lives opposite to Damen station and we spent our first couple months dating gorging on these novelty donuts. So as a cake-donut fan... After trying almost every one of them I reckon the lemon pistachio old fashion and the glazed chocolate is the best. Don't bother with any other cake donuts as they're usually too dry and if you want a moist cake one, head over to glazed and infused and get yourself one of their elaborately decorated red velvets. There's a wide variety of 20+ donuts to choose from but I was often disappointed.. I.e. The carrot cake donut was too sweet and fibrous, lacked body and cream cheese icing. The double chocolate donuts always seemed to have plasticky, tacky icing that seemed like it would peel off when you but down into the donut. A lot of fritters looked down right revolting, like fried vomit. If you have over 500 followers on popular pays you get a free donut every month if you post your donut pic with related hashtags to Instagram as well. I really can't comment on the yeast donuts as they never taste good or texturally feel right to me, but people seem into the Boston Cream or Nutella pockets. I for one have eaten enough donuts for 2014 and look forward to gorging on other fatty carbs. read more

Good thing this place is far away from my, because the Biscoff banana pockets would be my new breakfast every weekend. I really liked how different the donuts sounded compared to the other donut shops in Chicago. The word "pretzel" with donut makes it sound so much more tasty, doesn't it?! And they also had a lemon pistachio donut, and pistachio is one of those flavors that isn't very common, but is really good since you don't eat it very often. Of course, the price is just like all the other donut shops where it's $2-3 for one donut, but I guess they've gotta keep the competition up. The service is great and they have a wide selection, but the donuts are way over-glazed, still more cake-y than a traditional donut (and yes, I realize that's what the typical white hipster is into, but it's not as good as a traditional donut), and for the inflated cost (due in large part to their popular rep) it's really not worth the extra investment. A number of other donut boutiques can give you something better for that kind of money. I mean, it's cool for hip specialty donuts, but it's not exactly my top choice. Typically I'd go 3 stars for an experience like this, but Stan's vastly inflated reputation combined with their obnoxiously crowded Wicker Park location means I need to be a little harsher. read more

I went this past Thursday. Not too crowded, no line...fast service...that's good. But....I ordered all old fashioned donuts with different toppings, like blueberry, chocolate orange, pistachio, vanilla and orange glazed. The flavors just didn't 'POP' as I anticipated from their stellar appearance. Just not enough for me to go 'Ooooh....pistAHCHio!' or really salivate with each bite for a chocolate orange medley of nom-nom. The coffee was perfect. I just wasn't wowed by the base of the donut or the flavors as I expected them to be as over the top as the donuts looked. And speaking of looks, I still have a hard time with restaurant staff sporting nose rings and nail polish, that to the best of my knowledge is a big no-no with the Health Department. Oh well.
