I'm definitely a Stan's fan. This location is right off the blue line in Wicker Park, and is a bit smaller than the location I had visited downtown. This time, my friend got the Nutella banana pocket and I got the apple fritter. Both were delicious and fresh, although I liked the apple fritter better. I tried the Nutella Banana Pocket and the Cherry Cheese Danish. Like many girls, I'm a huge Nutella fan so of course I loved it, but for the price I could have found something similar elsewhere. The Cherry Cheese Danish was amazing though! Perfect combination of glaze, cherry, and the cheese...mouthwatering! It's a super small place though. 1- we felts rushed to put in our order because the line was quickly getting long, 2- we wanted to sit in and enjoy our donuts, but there was no space available. This shop is tiny but well decorated. We stopped before boarding the Blue Line to follow the marathoners last weekend. The donut selection is out of this world. Two of us narrowed our selections to three types (it was hard!) and shared all of them. Coconut cake, buttermilk bar, and cinnamon/sugar twist. Each was better than the last. I usually love Stan's. And I thought they could do no wrong. However, today I had the misfortune of trying the captain crunch bismark doughnut and it was a big mistake. It tastes nothing like captain crunch and I couldn't take more than two bites. Seeing that I paid around $3 for it, I took it back to the counter and told the employee "I'm sorry I'm gonna be honest I really don't like this doughnut." She blankly stared back at me and asked if there was something wrong with it (yes, in my opinion there is). I said "no, I just really didn't like it." Another blank stare. I asked if I could get another donut instead. Only then did she say "okay" and let me pick out something else. Sorry but customer service is not her strong suit. Donuts are a close second to my all time favorite from Voodoo in Portland. One star because of high price, but the variety pack I picked up from Labriola this past weekend was a yummy collection. Stan's - I want to be mad at you. Every morning I take the blue line to work and have to walk past you and it smells like a funnel cake, a delicious funnel cake. Anger aside at your attempts to ruin my diet, this place is just lovely. The employees were very patient while we selected our choices as we were bringing a few to a brunch with friends. Each and every one was amazing. Top choices from our group were the blueberry Bismark and cinnamon twist. Note - these things are HUGE (not complaining.) It's adorable inside, I wish I had time to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and a treat but that just hasn't happened yet. Wow, I cannot believe how good the donut is here! And i'm not even a big donut person, or even a big pastry/dessert person for that matter. I tried the pistachio lemon donut and WOW - perfection in every sense. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside with just the right blend of pistachio and lemon flavors. I actually thought it would have a lemon filling, but there's actually no filling, which is better because the donut didn't feel as heavy. As for the prices, on paper, it seems that it costs a lot for just a donut. Well, you have to think of it as not just a donut, but a high quality pastry confection. And also, for the size of the donut that you're getting, if you compare it to something like Dunkin Donuts, it's really not THAT much more expensive. But yea, everyone should try the donuts here! I used to live near this location or at least passed it a lot on my way to the Blue Line. When I was vegan, I was so happy there was somewhere I could get a fricken doughnut. Now that I'm back on the dairy, I have the huge selection and I'm loving it/overwhelmed and take more time to decide. My favorites are their glazed doughnuts and pistachio cake doughnut. My ultimate favorite is the toffee cake. I don't really eat filled doughnuts, but I think I'll try one of them eventually. The price is high, but matches the quality. The only thing I'm not really into is their coffee. Had it once and didn't enjoy it much. The cherry on top, however, is the great staff. Always pleasant and good under pressure. read more

I've eyed Stan's every time I pass by the North/Damen/Milwaukee intersection so I was so glad to try it this past weekend. We went after an early dinner before 6 pm, and fresh donuts were still coming out! There was a good crowd, but we managed to grab seats for a quick bite. The lemon pistachio old fashioned was one-of-a-kind, a very refreshing flavor. Although firm to the touch, the donut is soft and crumbly on the inside. The regular glazed donut was really nice as well. At first, it reminded me of Krispy Kreme's original glazed, but I realize that Stan's version has a slightly more substantial feel to it. The difference is subtle, so personally I would go for more interesting flavors. At the premium prices, Stan's is an occasional treat rather than a regular destination, but these are superior donuts. read more

THE BEST doughnuts in all of Chicago with the best selection, but not the best service. I was short-changed twice, once by $30, and the workers seem to enjoy having conversations amongst themselves before serving customers.
