I recently went back to the Star and I liked it. Good drinks very nice service and a comfortable atmosphere (except a couple locals at the bar gave us outsiders a curious stare which was a little uncomfortable). We ordered a basket of fries as a snack while we had our drinks and we received a good size basket. If we get the chance we will be back for a larger meal. read more

First time stopping at the Star. My oh my was it noisy. But we were told that it's usually quieter. The service was very punctual without feeling rushed. I ordered a burger and my partner had the patty melt, which looked nicer than mine. The burger roll was fairly generic which makes a difference in my mind. Next time I will try something else. Good fries. Clean restrooms, easy parking. Will go again. 3 1/2 stars. read more

Great Chicken. I can't even explain to you how much fun i had in this place. I wanted to try out the chicken and normally i don't splurge on fried food. I order the chicken and had a bloody mary and broasted potatoes. My god was it amazing. This is the local bar in Fairfax. Since I grew up there, I have to give it five stars. The place has some history though. It used to be The Star Bar Saloon, Hotel & Livery; rumored to be a place where Jesse James occasionally stayed. When I was a kid, they still had the hitching posts up out front. They are proudly the oldest bar to be serving Budweiser in the western United States. read more

This is an excellent eatery. The food is very tasty and the specials are a real bargain. (i.e. a large grilled tenderloin and a side for six bucks). It's a fun place to dine with plenty of menu choices. I was tempted to try the triple pork sandwich but gave the arteries a little break. On the downside, I didn't see a whole lot of healthy options but that's okay. The grilled tenderloin was very tasty and not too hard on the waste line. You can still watch the fat and calories if so inclined. Overall, this is a very nice place to dine and I would happily bring friends and family. For a small town, it's a powerful contender. Give it a try! I wish I could give it 4.5 stars! Great stuff! read more

I met a group of friends here last Friday for lunch. It was my first trip to Star Bar & Grill and I was looking forward to trying their tenderloin. I grew up in Iowa and I'm all about the pork tenderloin. So we all arrived and started to trickle into the restaurant. Needless to say this place was busy. It was a Friday and there are not many restaurants in the small town of Fairfax, so we weren't at all surprised by that. We were, however, surprised to find out that one of the two tables we had reserved was given to another group. They told us "that's just how it has to be." I was under the impression that if you reserved two tables you actually got two tables. So while some of us were eating at the table, others in the group were forced to start their meal at the bar and came over to the other table when the group had finally finished and left. Despite that problem, our waitress (who appeared to be the only one working at the time... why I don't know) was extremely friendly and actually did a good job of serving all of us considering how much she had on her plate. The food was just okay. I was looking forward to the tenderloin, but it wasn't very good compared with others that I have had recently. It's a flavorful standwich and was in no means bad, but it wasn't very memorable. The fries were also just okay. They were hot but really oversalted. They messed up on a couple of orders within the group, including my dad who ordered onion rings and was given fries. They fixed it, but as busy as they were it took a while for him to get them. Overall, the food is okay, the atmosphere is not too bad and the service was quite good. Would I go back there again? Yeah, I'd probably give them another shot if I'm ever back in Fairfax. Star Bar & Grill was alright, but it was not a memorable dining experience. read more

My wife and I recently visited a friend who lives in Fairfax, Iowa. We went to The Star on a Saturday night. Lots of wonderful people there, a fantastic staff, superb food and a fabulous IPA! It was so good we went back the next night, since it was our last night in Fairfax. Again a fantastic place! Salads made to order, pizza made to order, burgers and broasted chicken! Good small town atmosphere, food is ok for the price point and the beer is cold. You go for the socialization and incidentally get a bite to eat. I've had chicken wings, which were flavorful, with broasted potatoes which were not that good. I've also had a breaded pork tenderloin which was moist and I appreciate. The mushrooms were Hot molten lava that burned the inside of my mouth, not a good idea to bring that kind of heat to a table of drinkers. This is a small town bar with tv's, loud noise and food. I'd go back with friends but probably not a routine spot for me. read more

Went to the Star Bar for lunch today and it was excellent. We had the super secret uncooked veggie wrap. It's a sald burrito and is awesome..You have to beg the cook to make it, it's not on the menu. read more

Star Bar is much more than just a bar to this this growing bedroom community. As the town's only drinking establishment, it is the de facto town hall, general store and barbershop all rolled into one. Located three blocks off Hwy 151 in the heart of the original town, before new housing developments made Fairfax a SW Cedar Rapids suburb. It's the kind of place where everyone turns around to see who walking in the front door because it's likely someone they know. The crowd is friendly and lively, a mix of young and old. You'll find card players and dart throwers in the back room. There's a patio out back, but I haven't seen much activity there since the smoking ban took affect (thank God for that, you can see your hand in front of face now). The food's all pretty good with the usual bar fare and drinks are cheap. Town bars can be a lot of fun and this one is an oasis in an otherwise sleepy little burb-town.
