Another great "dive bar". I haven't been to too many places in the five Points area- but I am learning to like it based on my experience at Star Bar. Tuesday night was another Denver Tweetup. About 60-80 Denver area twitter-ers gathered to chat and get to know each other - this month at Star Bar. Great staff- very friendly and engaging. I flt very welcome on my first visit. If you like spicy and sour- Star Bar has your back. They make their own concocktail with New Belgium's Sour beer, Chili pepper extract and tequilla!! OH YES= TRY ONE. Try two if you like-- by the third one- however I was feeling it! Star Bar doesn't have food- shame so make sure to eat before you visit( yeah-- I didn't) Also KARAOKE MADNESS!! I was targeted by bar management while waiting near outside Marcos quail pizza downtown Denver I was waiting for food to be heated and due to the virus I waited next-door for less than five minutes as food is prepped management for this bar I believe then allowed the personal touch recovery company to illegally tow my truck without not acknowledging the driver of me being next-door and without his knowledge possibly ordering pizza then when I asked management there or asked workers what was seen or done with my truck they had no response but seem to laugh in between drinks when I obviously quickly after felt targeted for being a minority and not being a part of their establishment !!! read more

I am currently traveling the country and have a friend near this bar. We went out with our masks in tow to this one star bar and we were greeted with barely a glance as the bartender acted annoyed we were there. We sat down at he table he suggested and later asked to go to the outside bar. He acted incredibly aggressive and ushered us outside where we where someone else's problem. I got up to go to the restroom and not ten seconds after one of my group came in to use the restroom as well. I didnt think anything of it until the bartender followed us in the bathroom to tell us that there is only one person in the bathroom at a time! Literally mid pee he yells at both of us. I didnt ask for any of this. It's sad really. He got mad when I told him to get out of the bathroom if he wanted to yell at us. read more

I loved the bar when we walked in, but that changed immediately based on the service. After asking if they served montucky cold snacks the bar staff responded with "... no read the screen for what beers we have". Passing the comment aside we stumbled upon a cool spot in the back patio which apparently we weren't supposed to be at because it opened in 20 minutes with no sign saying it was closed. I'm a sucker for good, comfortable bars, and this is one of my favorites in Denver. Justin, the owner, seems to take great pride in the beers he serves, and offers up a solid selection of quality brews. I was happy to see they had La Folie on tap - a sour beer! I'm used to finding sour beers on tap only at places like Fresh Craft or Euclid Hall, and both of those carry much, much higher prices. The bar clearly has its crowd of regulars, and everyone was friendly without being intrusive (it had been a long day and I was feeling kind of quiet). All in all, can't wait to go back to Star Bar - great beer, low prices, and a friendly staff. What more could I ask? read more

This is an amazing stop. They had a singer there the other night, Daniel Larson, and it genuinely was the time of my life! His barotone voice reminded me of the late Frank Sinatra, but surprisingly he still hit all the high notes in Celine Dion's smash hit, "I'm Alive!". Fuck these people. They don't know how to make a proper drink, and insult you if you look unhappy. *Edit* Apparently, my girlfriend went in to try to get a refund on my behalf for the terrible service and terrible drink. The bartender claimed I cussed her out and was rude. When ordering my final drink (and second beverage after the literal worst drink I've ever imbibed), I asked for a Jameson and Coke. The bartender (a male) informed me that a) I wasn't allowed a cocktail, and b) Tullemore Dew was the only option. I said fine, and got the Tully. While signing my tab, the bartender (female) said "Thanks for the tip" as I was signing. My internation was to tip cash, but upon the comment opted to not tip anything. When my girlfriend attempted to get a refund on my behalf, the bartender was rude, claimed that I cussed her out and refused to work with her. This is THE ABSOLUTELY worst service I've ever had to deal with, and cannot even believe how bad (and expensive) the experience ended up being without even drinking more than a shot (my original drink got abandoned upon trying it and finding it to be horrible). On top of that, the original bartender advised me that I had 6 minutes left on the back patio, and upon lighting a smoke, I suddenly had to go inside immediately. One of the great dive bars of Denver, atmosphere-wise, while cleverly classy with their drink menu (think well-fashioned cocktails and an extensive craft beer list). Some of the friendliest barkeeps as well. My only complaint is their happy hour, lacking in compelling specials, but that seems to be pervasive in LoDo so can't be any excuse to skip this wateringhole. read more

I urge you not to support this business or the pizza place next to it. The parking lot for these two businesses is ruthless. I pulled in that lot to pick up to-go food across the street and within minutes their soul-less skill-less tow truck driver was hooking up my car to tow while my friend was sitting in the passenger seat. He held me ransom for $75 or tow my truck. Do not go here! This is the only lot in Denver that will tow immediately instead of giving you a ticket. This is a very dirty busy practice! Star Bar gets all the stars!! I love love love dive bars and have a special place in my heart for this one. Skee ball, karaoke, cheap drinks, and rad people--what's not to love? Star Bar is a fave of most of my friends, and most nights out in RiNo/downtown end up here. Their beer list is pretty impressive--although it's a dive bar, you'll find way more than PBR and Bud Light. I'm more of a wine/cocktail lady, and their bartenders are really great (especially considering how crazy it gets in there on the weekend). Did I mention skee ball? I did, but I will again, because I love that game. Head here on Tuesdays and Thursdays for karaoke and catch live music on the weekends. I don't think I've ever gone bar crawling in Denver without somehow making it to Star Bar. I've had nights start at the 'Mount (yuck) and end up all the way over here simply due to the draw of a proper dive with karaoke, live music, and (really) Skeeball. All the dive standards are on offer but you can't survive in Denver without a few craft pours and a mean cocktail, and both are executed very well here - not just the standard local pours but also some standouts like Bell's. I've not had a cocktail here but drinking companions continue to rave about how well they are executed (it's incredible how well 2-3 bartenders can take care of the crowds here.) If you were just in the mood to hide in a booth and conspire with your friends, there are definitely quieter spots to do that. For drinking, people watching, and enjoying the tunes, Star Bar is a unique treasure. Love this spot. read more

On a recent trip to Denver, Star Bar played an integral role in a weekend getaway for my group of six dive bar enthusiasts. And by integral role, I mean we went to Star Bar every single day. It's one of those daily dives where routine trips are very possible. From what I can tell, Star Bar is one of the few bars if its ilk anywhere downtown. In an area overrun with rooftop bars for dudes who love protein shakes and chest bumping (due to the proximity to Coors Field), having a low key dive bar with cheap drinks and a good juke box is quite the respite. It's also huge, so if you're coming by yourself or with a group of 100, you can still find room to hang out. All in all, a time tested dive you've probably heard of if you live there, and somewhere you should bookmark if you're visiting. read more

Good beer selection but Sub-par service. We went in there for a birthday party (not my first time in the place) and they were completely overwhelmed and seemed a little put off by us being at THEIR bar. There are no waitresses so you have to go the bar which is packed with people because they don't remove the stools even when it gets crowded. The one floor person picking up drinks asked us to bus our own drinks to the bar. This is a great bar but instead of encouraging more business, they shove it away by being so pretentious. Herb's down the street is a much better place or meadowlark bar a little more north if youre out on a friday or saturday. Okay, okay. Considering that Star Bar is pretty much my favorite, it gets five stars. I love that we always run into someone we know here, even if it's the only other people in the whole bar. I love it when the bartenders get a bit of a 'tude when a drunk group wanders in up from LoDo and orders "top shelf" vodka and cheap, lame beer. I love it when we're sitting in a booth and all of a sudden a rockabilly band starts playing. I love that their jukebox is a mere 50 cents a play. I love that they didn't serve green beer on St. Patricks day, thus keeping the idiots out. I love that they never have the same beer on tap in any two visits (except when your visits start getting closer and closer together). I love the fact that we were there one night and there were open containers of coconut milk and aloe vera juice for beer cocktail experimentation. I guess I just love YOU, Star Bar. read more

What did I expect walking in here? Well, after talking to all of my friends who basically live in this bar, I expected a boozy theme park. Water slides filled with IPAs. A whiskey sprinkler. And a man in stilts pouring stouts into your mouth from three feet above your face. (Note to self: Open this bar some day.) What I got was a low key, divey bar with the most impressive beer list I have ever seen. And I liked it. I mean, when you know your beer and liquor and stock your shelves accordingly, why would you ever need to focus on gimmicks? I'm prone to loving dive bars anyway, but I think this one's got it right. Star #1 - Crazy beer list. Lots of rare and experimental brews. I embarrassed myself on Friday after ordering a tasty Great Divide Belgian style Yeti for myself, and then a PBR for my husband. Doh. To be fair, he asked for it! Received a stony-eyed glare from the bartender. Well deserved. Star #2 - Live rockabilly band and the super talented dancers to go along with it! If I knew I could hear Buddy Holly songs while drinking delicious beers, maybe I'd go out more often. Star #3 - There were at least two dogs hanging out in the bar Friday night. I don't know if it was because of the rain outside or what, but I always love to pet cute pups in a bar. Star #4 - They let us bring a pizza inside. We had been down the street at Great Divide when their glycol system failed due to a power outage. But we'd just bought a Basic Kneads pie outside! Dilemma. Luckily Star Bar let us eat inside with no grief. Unfortunately we brought the bad luck over to Star Bar because after our first round, their co2 system went out, leaving us with only canned beers. Much better canned beers than PBR though. Don't order a PBR! read more

Here is what I know. Copious amounts of cocktails were consumed at Mile High Spirits and it was time for a change. Star Bar was first on my list as I have never been and everyone seems to love, so we stumbled in to a fully packed house, drank a beer and made our way to the outside bar and Britt, the drink making queen. We sampled some boozey ice pops and chatted with her about how this outside bar is kinda her "thing". She clearly loves what she does and is great at it. One of her concoctions, Purple Rain, was so insanely delicious that I texted myself the name of it so I would remember. Granted, I did this with one eye closed and my text actually read 'purole rain' but the next day I regained my facilities and the use of both eyes and realized the error in my spelling. I plan on asking for this next time I am there. And there will surely be a next time. read more

I was lucky enough to pop into Star Bar twice last week. I'm back to re-review. I heart you Justin. He mixed up a salted IPA w/grapefruit liquor concoction. They appear to thoughtfully keep a diverse beer selection while including the average guy favorites. (sorry NO PBRs) They had New Belgium's Cocoa Mole on tap. A rich dark and flavorful beer with hints of chocolate and Chile. Also on tap was a special Oskar Blue's Gordon barrel aged in Leopold Brothers Apple bourbon barrel. YUM!!! So, I'm telling owner/bartender Justin how my good friend recently infused some vodka with his home grown jalapenos. He pulls out a shot glass and has me try the house-made sour mix... OMG! It has chopped Serranos floating in the cantainer. He mixed me up the BEST Marg I HAVE EVER HAD. If you are affraid of heat, just ask for a taster before going for it. Then we got hungry. We ordered take out from Marcos (next door) and ate at the bar while listening to a funky local folk/bluegrass band play. I need to make a list.... I was really excited to check out this place. From what I'd heard it was exactly what I was looking for in a bar: divey, cozy, solid beer list, and all these things were true. However even the best bar can be ruined by bad staff. I don't know the last time I have been treated so inconsiderately by any staff at any establishment. We ordered a last round of drinks at last call and a few minutes later they were at our table telling us to pound our drinks or leave. This was 45 minutes before the legal bar close time; there were many other patrons in the same situation. When we protested the server treated us like trash. Quote: "Chug them now or leave them, either way you have to leave now." I was really excited about going to Star Bar, it really seemed like my kind of place, but unfortunately it's just another boring bar with poor service looking to capitalize on the dive bar trend. I hope to revisit this bar in the near future in the hopes that it will not disappoint me, as I believe this bar has a lot of potential. read more

Every time I'm at Star Bar I say "Why don't I live closer so I can visit here more often?!" Because my liver would hate me. Unassuming inside and out, and I love that about Star Bar. The bartenders are always on top of their game, and they provide a really creative list of brews. No, you won't find 50 different beers on tap, but you'll find a very well planned list that often includes beers you haven't seen around town. And with Marco's and Biker Jim's within a stone's throw, why wouldn't you come here more? Screw your liver - come to Star Bar. I had pretty high expectations of Star Bar before ever setting foot in it. I have a few friends who are regulars and they have talked up and down about this place. I had the opportunity to go the other night and I'll tell you, I wasn't disappointed. It's a little divey, but I like that. You won't find a "Chad Fest" going on here like most other places downtown. They have a great selection of craft beers on tap as well as in cans and bottles. They have a sweet juke box, although, I mostly heard country on our first visit here. I'll let that slide. The bartenders are very friendly and know their stuff. Ask the bartender to make you a Hemingway Daiquiri. Trust me, you won't be disappointed, especially on a hot Denver night. I went here for a chocolate and beer pairing with Great Divide. It was awesome! Got to try six beers from Great Divide each paired with a different/unique type of chocolate. My faves were the cayenne pepper chocolate and chocolate/peanut butter/sea salt. All of the beers were great of course. Star bar is an interesting place..total dive feel. Straight out of the 60s with drop ceilings and wood paneled walls. I swear they stole my parents basement!! But, at the same time they have a great rotating tap selection.
