my friend and i were originally having semi- a good time here, then we were waiting for the rest of our party show up and as we were walking to them this insanely rude, sad excuse of a woman decided to barrel through us. she elbowed my friend in the head so my friend turned around and said excuse me, from there he had water thrown on him and this lady tried to punch him so he pushed back to try and get out of the situation. instead of kicking out the perpetrator they singled out my friend even though all he did was try to keep his female friends safe. one body guard tried to let us go because he obviously knew we did nothing wrong, so we tried to continue our night. after that some came back up to us and told us we had to leave because he saw my friend putting hands on a woman? whole situation was insanely weird, we all decided to just take our business elsewhere. the low stars and bad reviews for this place in comparison to all the neighboring bars makes a whole lot of sense. we definitely won't ever be back read more

I'd call it a level above a dive bar in terms of layout! But it's still pretty divey. Which I like dives! Feels like one of them anything or anyone goes kinda spots. The late night happy hour menu caught our eye so we decided to give this spot a chance. Boy did it take us back to the college days! Not exactly somewhere you take someone you want to impress but good vibes nonetheless. They've always got something going on whether it's a DJ downstairs, karaoke night, jazz night, etc. Jazz night in particular is amazing. The group that normally plays there during jazz night is comprised of very, very talented musicians. Be aware that like most bars in the RiNo area, it gets absolutely packed on the weekends so be ready to wait a bit at the bar. One cool thing that sets Meadowlark apart from other bars in the area is the dark, moody atmosphere downstairs and the semi-outdoors area upstairs if you want some air. Both areas have bars so definitely check one out if the other is way too packed. Drinks here are very similar to all the other bars in the area. This review is for their OPEN MIC (Tuesday's at 9pm) It'll be pretty empty at 8:30pm but I would suggest arriving around that time if you want to have first pick for your time-slot. People started coming in closer to 9pm. They put out the list at 8:40pm and have you sign up for the time-slot you want starting at 9pm with 15 mins intervals (amount of time for your set). The organizer is very adamant about the time and pretty punctual when each set starts/ends. I'd say by 9:30pm there were around 35 people. That's when I decided to play. I stayed until 10pm so can't say how crowded it got after that. Apparently later is when more people show up. The bartenders are super nice and attentive. read more

I love a good dive bar. Give me all the underground music, dim lights and cheap drinks. Which is exactly what this place serves up! We ventured here as stop #2 for a friend's birthday celebration and found it to be the DIVE of dives! First, we walked down a flight of 20 (or so) stairs to their basement, which featured rows of booths along the walls, a looooooooooong wrap around bar top, and upper patio area, stuffed to the brim with people! The dim lights create an intimate atmosphere, along with great live music and plenty of seating/standing areas to mingle with friends. Drinks are CHEAP. We opted for vodka soda's with lime for a light/refreshing - which proved to be the right choice, as our tab was insanely cheap. For 2 drinks, it was $7 - which we gladly took advantage of the entire night! Bartenders are so nice, friendly and kept the drinks flowing and provided us with good conversation! Upstairs, is cah-razy, but oh so fun! Location is easily marked but not in the safest part of town - although it's gentrifying! There are a handful of other great businesses near that I'm anxious to try as well! We had such a blast here, and can easily see us returning if ever finding ourselves in this area again!! read more

Wish I had read the reviews before going here. Like others who've had a terrible experience at this establishment, I've worked in the service industry for about a decade. A friend and I went to Meadowlark at 1am on a Tuesday. They close at 2am. Apparently it was a slow night and we were turned away even though they still had customers in the bar. No worries- we left. 4 patrons walked into the bar. I waited a moment to see if they walked back out since I was told they were closed. When they did not, I walked back into the bar and spoke with the bouncer who said "this is my roommate & my friends". So they turned away paying customers to let in their scrub homies. Staff isn't very friendly, and the guys right when you walk in are flat out rude. There was what looked like a tip jar next to the doorman and my fiancé is trying to make conversation and give the guy some cash and I was flabbergasted at how rude he was being given that she was trying to give him a gratuity. Needless to say, we didn't end up putting any money in that jar, and the dude when we asked him what his name was said some thing like, "why the f* do you need to know that?". Bar service was very average. I understand things can get frustrating during customer service but the bar staff was just there to give drinks; there was no hospitality. My Negroni was made so half-assed that it wasn't even cold (not properly stirred) and the measurements (I watched) were not the industry standard (equal parts gin, Campari, sweet vermouth). Originally my friend and I skipped this place to go to Cold Crush across the street. There was a line and a cover here at the time...so eh no thanks. When my friend and I were at Cold Crush, we made new friends who brought us here. Fortunately, our new friends knew the bouncers and we zipped past the line and didn't pay cover. This place is certainly large, but it gets extremely packed. Downstairs it was incredibly packed and the ceilings are pretty low. It almost felt like a party in a basement, that's how claustrophobic it felt to me. We worked our way upstairs to what looked like an outdoor area but they enclosed it on their own. The enclosure did not feel legit, but it was quite large. There is a bar in both areas. Music was ok, but it was extremely hard to hear it in the outdoor/enclosed area. This area was certainly more for chatting and hanging, not so much for dancing. read more

Just around the corner from Larimer Lounge, you'll find a staircase leading down into a basement, at the bottom of which hangs a discreet wooden sign reading "Meadowlark." Open the doors into a catacomb-looking space filled with a bar, a very few places to sit, and the world's tiniest stage. A local artist's work adorns every wall. From the looks of it, I thought I was stepping into the greatest find ever. But it turns out, it was so crazy crowded I couldn't find a place to stand, let alone sit, the lone bartender (although perpetually calm and friendly enough) could barely hold the mass at bay, and there was a strange smell in the air. No beer on tap, they specialize in martinis. I don't like martinis, I like beer. (And what's with the animal heads on the wall?) It WOULD have been a pretty good find, if the whole of Denver hadn't found it first, and then the greatest find ever if they had draught beer. Watch your step going downstairs to meadowlark bar. There was a $5 cover charge, which is rare in Houston, but nothing too expensive to walk away. It is pretty packed for a Friday night but there's a little more wiggle room upstairs with a small bar. The crowd ranges from 20 yr olds to the 30's. Everyone is dressed casually and they played mainly hip hop. Smoking is allowed upstairs and a chunk of places to sit if you can find an open seat. I'd recommend meadowlark kitchen if you are looking for a less crowded vibe. I'm too old to be hanging out where fights break out but really enjoyed the music. Comfortable, intimate setting in the basement above the hipster clothing store where I came oh so close to buying a t-shirt that had a silk screened faded image of the about-to-be-described "star" saying "Hey bro, don't Hasselhoff me." Meadowlarks a decent spot in a great location - gets pretty crowded on weekends and they don't seem to have a cap on the amount of people they allow in. Once downstairs, I almost immediately have to go out back for fresh air as the inside bar is so congested. Out back is hit or miss in terms of quantity of people. Takes a while to get to the bar to order a drink, as there's often only one, maybe two, bartenders. On any night you will hear some of the most provocative music that Denver has to offer. And it will only get better when the outside stage opens in May. Nights under the red lights, intoxicated by great music, great people - all under the stars... It doesn't get much better than that. If I could give zero stars I would. I started at the downstairs bar, ordered a drink, and didn't like it. By the time I tried it I was at the upstairs bar. I went to the upstairs bar, which was fully lit and stocked with 3 bartenders, and asked if I could change my drink. The first bartender was very kind and tried to fix my drink. But then a second bartender (short, skinny, long brown hair, stringy and greasy) came up to us and said "take these drinks downstairs. We are not open up here yet." This was the rudest remark I've ever heard yelled at myself at a bar. All the lights were on, there were three bartenders chit chatting behind the bar, how was I supposed to know it wasn't open? And then to make it worse, they "opened" two minutes later. Despicable behavior. Will never come back. read more

This bar has the worst music I have ever heard. My friend asked the DJ what kind of music was playing and they claimed it was 80s which is not the case it was just techno. I don't know why I had low expectations of this place, but all I really knew about it was it was in a basement and it was in the same neighborhood as the Larimer Lounge. I completely expected a dark and grimy dive. I was wrong! It is clean with great atmosphere -- exposed brick walls, a nice bar. It felt pretty warm and welcoming. I came to see my husband's band play. They are indie rock with loud guitars. There was an acoustic singer/songwriter who played after them. The space really worked for both types of acts which was great! A really nice intimate spot to see music. There were lots of little tables and chairs around the bar as well as a larger table in the back. (I'm lazy and like to sit and rock out.) The bathrooms were stylish and very clean. I've heard good things about the patio, so I can't wait to check that out in the spring. read more

I'd like to preface that this review is based solely on my service experience (which it seems others have felt too) and not my view of the establishment as a whole. I have been to Meadowlark plenty of times for parties in the front, soul night in the back, the jazz jam on Mondays, yadda yadda, yadda. Normally I have a great time there. In fact I had a great time there last night but my interaction with the bartenders was so bad, I have to share my experience. My roommate and I show up to the Monday night Jazz Jam around 11:15 and it's PACKED. I'm like alright we are gonna have a great time tonight. I noticed the wait at the bar as you walk in is 3 rows deep and so we mosey over to the side that is closest to the dancefloor/band. We waited about 10 minutes but scored when 2 guys left their bar seats in front of us. We sat down and that when the waiting game began. Now, I'm not the aggressive ordering type. I don't mind waiting to order a drink because I don't like confrontation. And they were busy so I figured why not. I had my card in my hand and I sat directly behind their computer so I know they'd eventually get to me. Right? WRONG! After about 20 minutes of waiting with my card in hand and making the occasional eye contact I still had not received so much as a hello or I will be right with you from long-haired ponytail guy. I refer to him as this because that's how he was referred to in a previous review. LOL Anyway, I was friends with MANY of the musicians there last night including the house band musicians. It took my friend, the pianist to flag down the bartender and order a round of drinks on his tab for my roommate and I to get my drinks. I thanked him kindly and was hoping that this would be it for my interaction with these bartenders. No, no, I was wrong. As the night progresses, I'm having a good time and the guitar player in my band comes up and chats with me for a bit and I offer to buy him a shot. I'm thinking, no problem. I'm finished with the fore mentioned drink and it's cleared out a bit, I should get served no problem. I commence my scanning of the bar and card in hand again. This time there's a different person behind the bar. A guy in a black shirt with the same cocky attitude. I mean seriously MEADOWLARK BAR Staff? I have never NOT been served in my life. I'm not crazy drunk, I would've tipped you a minimum of 20% regardless, and I'm a nice gal if you care to have a conversation with any of your patrons. I waited so long to order this shot, my guitar player friend was back up playing with the band and I still hadn't ordered his shot yet. It was so bad that when the bartender was WASHING GLASSES in front of my roommate I leaned over and spoke so loud and asked, "Can I please order next?" I know he heard me because the people adjacent to us stopped their conversation and looked at us. I kept saying Hello, Hello and this jerk is seriously ignoring me. For NO reason. I look at the people across from me and give them this shocked look and they look away. What finally got the bartenders attention? My roommate turning around and raising her hand. He came so quickly to take her order and she then directed him to me so that I could order. I was so appalled by that. I felt like he didn't want my business. Before I ordered, I asked him why he ignored me when I asked to order and did he not see me for the past half an hour with a card in my hand? He couldn't answer me. He proceeds to tell me that I'm yelling at him. I don't yell in public unless I down right have to do so. The music was loud and I had to speak up but I'm a singer and I know how to project my voice without yelling. I think he was scared I called him out in front of all the people at the bar. They saw the whole thing and was waiting to hear how he would react. Because his responses were so curt and careless, I decided NOT to order a drink for my friend. And at the moment, I wasn't even going to write a review because I usually don't write reviews for this purpose. I slept on it and woke up this morning and was like, wait a minute, I will go on YELP and see what others are saying. I'm not alone. Which leads me to believe this wasn't an isolated incident, or a one-time fluke. There is a real problem with service here and it needs to be addressed. Meadowlark bar staff, I was a person that wanted to spend money at your bar. That wanted to have a great night after not coming in for a while because I have been going through a roller coaster of personal things. That wanted to order a drink for a friend but couldn't do so because of your cold, crass attitude. I understand your bar is full of hipsters but I CLEARLY am not a hipster. I'm probably hip-er than 90% of the people in there but I try not to use that to get what I want. Please change your attitude. Treat people with dignity. I've been debating whether or not to bite my tongue or join in on the culture war in full swing in these MLB reviews. To put the culture politics aside for a hot second: jazz night is great. Band goes on usually around 10pm, plays until 11 (great classic standards; no ez-listenin' or elevator music here), takes a break, and then anyone can jump in on the drums or keys. John sometimes even shares his upright. There are vocalists and guitarists and horn players that occasionally jump in, too. If you're an emcee, they'll lay down a little beat for you so you can go buck wil' (both femme and male rappers have graced the stage). The crowd by this time is super drunk and gregarious and supportive. It's glorious. The patio in back is magical and cozy. The bar doesn't serve any food but the Meadowlark Kitchen is open super late and is right next door. Plus you can get tacos across the street at Cold Crush. The bartenders are awesome - this is not the place to get a fancy cocktail but they do have some mid-shelf stuff like Bulleit if you want something neat. And they have Fernett. And strongbow in cans. Come soak in the best thing to do on a Monday. So now I'm gonna get on my little soapbox for one minute/review. Because I love me my jazz nights in stone-walled lairs. And I'm growing weary of intruders mucking it all up. //begin rant (plea) Look, it's not that I'm going to fall on my sword defending 'hipsters' because they/we are a special brand of evil. But the truth is, although we may have been the first wave of re-territorialization, the second wave is here and viciously consuming... well... ALL OF DENVER. Goodbye, Baker. Goodbye, Cap Hill. We sought this away from our history of dealing with jocks and frat boys and those who care little about anything but their klan and how to exploit others. Unfortunately, the new Denver yuppies, lo-do'ites, high maintenance self-entitled women and men of white mid-to-upper class'ness no longer fear to tread... well... ANYWHERE. And then when they come in, they complain... about the smell, about the looks they get, about the service, about EVERYTHING not catering to their standards. I'm not saying don't come here if you have a well-paying job or if you don't dress in all black with tattoos. I'm not saying you can't smile and have a good time. I really don't care what you look like. I care about how you treat others. Don't come in here with a huge crew, talking/screaming over the music, and ordering absurd drinks. This is not your world. For once, everyone does not revolve you, oh princes and princesses of Denver. Come in and respect what has been a tradition for 5+ years. There are so many different kinds of people in here from different countries and backgrounds and age groups. There are a LOT of regulars here and it's a tight-knit community. The Meadowlark is sort of little a little hidden sanctuary in the scary looking industrious neighborhood near downtown. It's right around the corner from the more popular Larimer Lounge, but it's sub-street entrance makes it a little harder to find. The decor in the Meadowlark is sort of casually sophisticated and there is often local art hanging on the walls, available to purchase of course. They also have live music at the Lark including The Living Room Series hosted by the Denver Syntax magazine which features a lot of really great local acts. Sometimes crowded and other times equally empty, the Meadowlark tends to draw people from all walks of life to share an occasional weak drink in a friendly environment that is hard to compare to any other in the Denver area. read more

***The deception**** I was enjoying music at Larimer Lounge and stumbled across this 'red light' stair way that led down to this great bar. I was only able to enjoy the folky guitar player for a minute and use the restroom on my first stop here. I was so stoked by the calendar of upcoming musicians that I talked it up to all my workfriends and wanted to go back soon. I then gathered a group of upscale good friends and we went to Meadowlark as our destination. What a mistake. VOMIT on the floor, too rude to help you bartenders, and POT everywhere upstairs. While that could be cool....it was as if the teenagers of Denver had descended and showed up with their 5 foot bong. NOT a place to take anyone of quality; NOT a place to go with work colleagues; NOT a place to take family; NOT a place for the girls to hang out at. read more

I told my boyfriend that if he rode his bike home drunk I was going to call the cops on him for drunk driving... we had a little tiff as he jerked the bike towards him and I jerked the bike back towards me. It eventually ended with him being too drunk to stop me from taking the front wheel off and then he finally gave in. The bar is that good... That good that you will ride your bike on your birthday so that you can hang out with the other fellow larkers in the underground dungeon like bar. This has to be one of Denver's best bars, hands down. The crowd is cool, laid back, and the perfect mixture of the return of the Realty Bites crowd meets Sex in the City meets Folk. The bar oozes you into comfort with the caramel coloring wood and a shiny bar top. The artist showing at the time, was intriguing and made the place seem even more crowded... with images of people, faces, and everyone's personal favorite, breasts. Last night Meg was there from the White Stripes, well, at least Jessica H and I thought she looked like Meg. Meg, as we continued to call her, was one of the bartenders, and the 'tenders are a huge reason why this place rocks so much. They were friendly, cute, and into listening into your conversations so they could get involved. The patio is the perfect addition to this bar, and that is where Jessica and I were united in person for the first time... The bartenders were great, the space is intimate without feeling tight and making me all claustrophic and, man, if you want to get up close and personal with a band, this is the venue to visit. It's where I imagine hobbits would go if they were in the mood to catch an indie rock show in Denver. Plus, bonus for them: the beer comes in pints! I went here on a whim the other weekend. I had every intention of seeing the Asteroid Galaxy Tour at the Larimer Lounge, but when we got there, it was sold out. While my friend and I sat around wondering what to do, I remembered a friend mentioning a another show at the Meadowlark just a few doors (and stairs) down. We ventured down the stairs and paid the $7 cover for what would be a pretty great evening filled with fantastic bands, lots of Jameson and ginger and some new friends made while I was dancing around like an idiot while the bands played. I'm interested to come back in the summer for an outdoor show to see what they do with there very large outdoor space, because when I was there (int he winter), it was just a large smoking patio, which isn't all that appealing to me. read more

A hidden gem indeed! This place is underground on the corner of 27th and Larimer. It's an industrial & art district and you wouldn't even know that the bar is there. But once you are inside, you'll love the place. They've really done a good job of decoration and creation of atmosphere in here. And they have a patio out back for nice summer evenings. I'm very excited to see the new outdoor stage they are creating for this summer. Live music outside in the city, what more could you ask for. I really like "Neighborhood Appreciation Night" when they have a special of PBR cans for 1 dollar. Sold. No questions asked. *And* you are right down the street from the Larimer Lounge, one of my favorite music venues in town. Brilliant. read more
