I love my new groomer Rika and her team at Star Dogs! I'm very particular in where I take my 3 pups and since I am new to the area I relied on my fellow Yelpers! My dogs are 9,8, & 3. My nine year old Pekinese poodle mix had a bad experience when he was younger and traumatized him in getting his nails clipped or teeth brushed. He would cry and yelp as if someone was hurting him just by touching his paws. I drove up to the store and was greeted right away with a smile from the store owner Rika. While filling out paperwork my pups were already taken to Rika. Rika had pictures of dogs with different haircut styles to find out how I wanted their cuts to be and she even had a ring of sample shortness of hair (like carpet shopping but with dog hair shortness level). This made it very easy to let her know what type of cut I wanted for them. I also added a teeth cleaning for them as well. When I arrived back to pick up my dogs I pulled up and saw all three sitting so calmly together, they weren't caged up but literally sitting together like on display waiting for me. My female dog (Sandie) had cute red bows on her ears and my two males had adorable bandana's which were themed for the upcoming Independence Day weekend. To my surprise my older pup (Scottie) had trimmed nails and his teeth looked so much better! I really don't know how she did it but I was happy it got done. Of course all three looked super adorable with their soft hair, clean look and the pups seemed to enjoy their experience unlike other places I have gone before. I think we found our new groomer! Such a bummer to leave this review because they do a fantastic job bathing dogs. I find that every time I've taken them for a simple grooming they leave feeling incredibly soft and smell so good. Since February I haven't been able to get my German Shepherd and husky a proper trim. When I took them in I decided to get a shorter cut for my German Shepherd because she tends to get super hot in the summer heat. My Huskies trim turned out all right just a bit bocce on the stomach and bum. But oh boy they really went short on my German Shepard. They shaved her much shorter than I discussed with them and chopped around her face and tail. When I expressed my dislike of the cut they replied with "this is the normal German Shepherd cut" when it was actually a yelp review of another German Shepherd's cut that inspired my preferred shorter cut. When I asked the gentleman working there if he honestly felt she looked good he confidently said yes, I'll let y'all be the judge. Great for strictly grooming, probably not the best spot to get a decent short cut on a large dog. read more

I've taken my beagle to Star Dogs for about six months. Rica is really sweet with her; she gets a bath, nail trim and anal glands for $35. She usually gets her done within an hour. They also offer teeth cleaning and other grooming services. Update: 2/2/14 Still taking my pup to Rika. She can usually get her in same day. I do notice my dog seems to smell better, longer, when Rika bathes her then when I do myself. I also take my dog into Star Dogs for a quick nail trim. For $10 she will do a nail trim & clean your dogs ears. You can walk in for this service! read more

This was my first time bringing my dog here and I was pleased with the service. I'll be switching her to this groomer for now on. My terrier-poodle mix was long overdue for a grooming and they did a great job on her. She came back looking like a brand-new dog. For a medium dog, you get the $55 grooming package which includes shampoo, blow dry, brush, cut/trim, nails and ears. They're open until 5 but I picked up my dog at 8:30 so they obviously stay longer to finish up their work after they stop taking appointments. I had nicked named my dog wolverine because she was in dire need of a groom and nails trimmed lol her regular groomers were booked but I was so happy when I called Star Dogs and they were able to take my dog, Zooey, and our friend's husky, Lady, as well. Before we left our dogs, Rika, the owner, gave us a quote which was great because they only accept cash and we knew exactly how much to bring. We were a little excited so we arrived early. Rika was still working on my dog and we could see her through the window. She put little purple bows on both of the dogs and they were so clean! Our backyard has a lot of dirt but even with being out all day Zooey is still looking clean and still has soft fur! They were a little expensive then Zooey's usually groomer but it was a convenience that Rika was able to take her on such short notice! I wish I can rate them a better rate. I've taken my dog here multiple times. He does not always come back the way I wanted him cut, but he looks great because he is so adorable and I just trim off the hairs that don't seem right. I took him in today for a 10:30 appointment and he was back at home around 2 which isn't as bad as usual. I was driving home and saw his eyes bloodshot red like this. I have never seen him like that. I was driving on the freeway and started to freak out. I took him to the vet and paid a fortune just for this check up for them to tell me that he was either cut or had lots of shampoo go into his eyes. I was so disappointed. When I went home and was giving him belly rubs I noticed something in his ears and it turns out he had this cotton ball in there this whole time! 2 or more yrs ago I took Marlie (German Shepard) to Star Dogs Groomers for the 1st time. I was a little nervous leaving my dog there not only because Marlie was scared, but I knew how my dog can get when scared. I brought him RIGHT when they opened and I was the second costumer there. by 1:30pm, I still did not receive one call from them. I called for an update and they said he wouldn't be done until 4 pm. Rika used to do a good job but after my last time there, it definately will be my Last Time there. She or one of her workers shaved off (cut off) all the nipples on my dog's bellies and still have not returned after I0 months. She didn't give me a reciept so I have no recourse. Especially beware when you go to pick-up you're pet. She rushes you and there isn't much room in the shop so it feels very cramped so I didn't get a chance to look over my dogs. When I noticed the nipples were shaved off I didn't even panick because I trusted Rika and thought they would grow back but nope. It's possible they could be infected but I have my own health issues so I haven't been able to afford to take them to the vet but if anything happens to my dogs I guarantee I will sue Rika for everything she owns. read more

Whenever I take my dog here to get groomed he's always so excited to go. They treat him well while he's in their care and they do an excellent job of grooming. When we moved here two years ago star dogs was conveniently located near our house and although there weren't many reviews they were all good so we gave it a try. Obviously it has worked out well as we have continued to take our 90lb Goldendoodle routinely (they do a great job with all sizes). Although we have moved out of La Mesa we don't mind driving a little out of the way to support such a great local business. My anxious puppy seemed to have been ok the first time at this place. The second time, I picked her up and she was trying to run out. It was as if she was afraid of the place, as she was going home she was not herself. The next day, it seemed something was wrong with her eye. The following day she developed an eye infection, it looks like the corner of her left eye was cut. **DO NOT GO HERE** If I could give zero stars I would. I brought my one year old puppy here two times, this last time will be my final time. The woman who runs the shop is extremely nice and also very understanding of what you want down to the length of fur and has examples. I brought my dog whom is shy and afraid of strangers and new people to her and he immediately tried to get away and I wish I would of followed his instinct. I left him there and three hours later I picked him up. He was chained to the little ledge where all the dogs that are done go. He was shaking nonstop which he doesn't do (unless we are at the vet). I took him immediately from there to the park to blow off some steam play with other dogs and get some energy out. He seemed fine and slept the rest of the day. The next day he was shaking his head a lot and itching his ears. Finally I lifted his ear and saw what looked like brown pus and redness everywhere. I went to touch it and he YELPED in PAIN. Mind you this dog let's me touch every inch of him and trusts me to touch his paws ears teeth whatever. I immediately scheduled an appointment at the vet thinking it might be just an ear infection from water in the ear. After 125$ and my vet telling me that the groomer must of RIPPED HIS EAR HAIR OUT SO ABRUPTLY HE BLED AND SCABBED. I don't know about you but there is no way I'd subject my furbaby to ABUSE like that ever again. I didn't take before pictures but I did take after cleaning and medicated photos. Please save your dog from getting abused and a hefty vet bill. Find a different groomer or do it yourself. read more
