I LOVE banh mí sandwiches, this is not a good one. First off, no pork options already had me disappointed, but the bread, THE BREAD, was one step short of cheap supermarket bread. No crackle, no pop. Truly not worth the money. I got the tofu/veggie sandwich. The bread is cheap, and you can taste and feel that in every bite. The fillings were distributed horribly and lacked flavor. Tofu was in large cubes, leading to many bites of strictly tofu and bread. Never again: I ordered lemongrass tofu - zero lemongrass flavor you might as well just call it a tofu rice bowl. There were 5 tiny cubes of tofu in the bowl and the rest was mostly just rice and iceberg lettuce. For 12 dollars I would expect some more protein. read more

Let me start by saying I love food trucks and love supporting local businesses. We ordered the tofu banh mi and some fries. This was hands down literally THE most disgusting sandwich I've ever eaten in my life. Airplane food is better than this. I wish I was exaggerating. I don't think the owner has ever had a banh mi. It was dripping in an orange "Mayo" sauce. The tofu was old, shriveled, unseasoned, and not remotely hot. There was no cilantro, jalapeños, fresh carrot or daikon. It had old grilled vegetables on it??? Grilled onion and red pepper ? Who does that to a banh mi? The bread was completely un-toasted, stale, and still managed to be soggy and fall apart from the orange liquid it was drenched in. My red flag should have been when I asked the owner if he could put extra cilantro on it and he said: "no. I have my own way of making it because people ask for it without that sometimes." Like what?!?! The food looks nothing like the pictures. Not even close. Not remotely the same ingredients. A person without vision in a subway could throw together a better sandwich than what came out of this truck. I was absolutely starving, but this was so disgusting I couldn't eat it. One star for the hot flavorless unsalted fries with a few flecks of paprika on it. Save your money. Get a packaged muffin or something from inside the Union. read more

What they offer is typical and there's nothing unique on their menu, which Thai/Vietnamese restaurants does not offer just as well - or made better too. Sorely disappointed. I came to Star Ginger really excited to get their Thai curry chicken rice bowl and Thai Tea because I remembered it being really good. They used to offer the rice bowl and beverage combo. But not anymore. The menu said that the price was $8.99 "*beverage and tax included." I took one star off because I ended up paying $9.25. I don't mind paying the extra tax or whatever, but it just seems a bit deceptive to me that I ended up paying more than what their menu said. My receipt said they added an extra 25 cents for a "custom item," which I did not order. I took another star off because the meal was supposed to come with a beverage. They used to offer Thai tea as an option. Again, I am fine with them just offering water or a soda, but the person who took my order never even offered me a beverage. He waited until I was at the other side of the counter and for me to ask him before he gave me a water. Lastly, I took another star off because Star Ginger is just not what it used to be. I used to love getting their rice bowls because the side salad was really good. It used to be a sweet dressing, but now it's just a dressing that tastes almost like Sriracha mayo (?). Not bad for on campus food considering the Silo doesn't have much to offer besides Shahs and Taco Hell. Lines are usually long around lunch time but the food comes out quick. It's a food truck so the prices are gonna be a little up there which people complain about. But what do you expect? It's fresh and light but also filling, so it gets the job done and you don't feel as gross like it you were to eat a "beef" burrito. It's hard to come by Asian food on campus that's decent and somewhat tasty so it's a win win. I've tried just about everything here. My favorites are the chicken tacos and the chicken curry over rice. Their spicy aioli sauce has just the right of spice to it. The combos are a good deal because you get a bag of chips and a Thai iced tea. The tacos are a little small but definitely filling. Portions vary from day to day, sometimes they're generous and other times not so much. Again, not bad for on campus food but if star ginger was elsewhere, I wouldn't even bother. read more

It's nice to have a few food trucks on campus since the Silo and the MU does get pretty crowded. The truck itself is very attractive and everything's listed nicely (a very clear menu). Service is pretty decent but it does drop when busy (but that completely understandable with a huge line of hungry students waiting). I personally would not consider this close to Vietnamese food. Yes they have the bahn mi sandwiches but it lacks a lot. The bread itself seems to be toasted too long since it's really hard and it's difficult to eat a crunchy sandwich without getting crumbs everywhere. As for the Asian noodle salad, it was very very bland. The last time I got it, I think they just forgot to add dressing on it or only put a very small amount (just a little oil found at the bottom). The Thai tea is ok...but I feel like it depends on the day though. It was super creamy one time (way to sweet) and pretty good another time. I guess I'll take the gamble when I'm craving a Thai tea. As a Vietnamese person from San Jose, I've had better. At least they tried. I had the pork banh mi and it was okay. Not as flavorful as it could have been. Also had their asian noodle salad and that was okay. It didn't wow me but what do you expect - it comes from a food truck. The banh mi sandwiches (~$5.50?) were large, but I wish the bread was toasted or another type of crusty bread was used. I read in other reviews that they are usually toasted, but given the long line and the 3 people in the truck working it would be understandable to forgo the toasting to shave a few minutes of wait time. I ordered their "5 Spice" pork banh mi and enjoyed it. It costs $5.50 for a sandwich by itself, but you can upgrade to a drink+sandwich combo for $6.50 or a drink+sandwich+bag of chips combo for $7.50. If you're familiar with Vietnamese restaurants in San Francisco you'll know you can find plenty of places that sell sandwiches for $3-$4--definitely cheapter than Star Ginger. But since this is a food truck, at UC Davis no less, I wasn't too surprised at the prices they charge. Onto the review of the banh mi. As I mentioned earlier, I enjoyed it. The baguette was soft and lightly toasted so it wasn't crumbling all over the place. The pork was flavorful and the texture was just right--some pork banh mi's I've had have meat that is too hard to chew!! The veggies (carrots, cucumber, daikon, cilantro) were bright and crispy and fresh and pretty well portioned out too. For my taste there was the right amount of jalapenos. The sandwich is also spread with Star Ginger's "sriracha aioli" which I thought was delicious. Most variations of banh mi have some kind of sauce/spread but I really liked the flavor of the aioli they used. The sauce tied all of the ingredients of the sandwich together. In short, I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor of the banh mi. It was much better than I expected. The workers inside the truck said the chicken banh mi is their most popular flavor, so I'll try that next time. One complaint I have is that the sandwich wasn't as hot as I thought it'd be by the time I ate it. I walked to Student Community Center to have lunch so it was only about 5 minutes after I bought it when I finally ate it. It was warm, but not what I'd expect from a sandwich I just ordered a few minutes ago. Service was fast as usual. I had ordered their Thai tea a few times before and the food/drinks always come out quickly. As far as the Thai tea goes, I'd prefer it with more milk, but you could always ask for more. They accept cash and card+Aggie cash too. Overall I will be back to Star Ginger since they have a couple of different items. I just hope that next time the food will be extra hot! read more

This place has been opened for a while and I'm surprised there aren't any other reviews for it yet. It's a food truck. The line at the other food truck is always pretty long and I was a little hesitant to try this one because there is hardly ever a line here. Turns out the food is decent, I tried the 5 spice pork rice bowl. It comes with 4 slices of pork with a little sauce on top (over rice) and an asian sweet seasame dressing as the side. The taste was pretty good, but I could have used a little more sauce on the pork, the top pieces had sauce but the bottom pieces had no sauce. The food itself is just decent, but when you compare to the other options on campus, it's a nice change (especially since all that is in the Silo is just fast food). I'd come back. read more

I always order the 5 Spice Pork rice bowl when I'm here. It's much better than the chicken if you're deciding between the two. The 5 Spice sauce is consistently delicious, but the portion sizes are inconsistent. You can always ask for extra salad for no extra cost though. Their rice tastes a little old a majority of the time unfortunately. Their thai tea is not as creamy as most places, getting it for an extra $1 is a good deal. The food trucks on campus are priced a bit high (a bit more than ordering to go at other local restaurants). Star Ginger is no exception but I was a bit surprised to pay $9 and change for a stir fry tofu meal. The meal was mostly steamed rice, lettuce with dressing (there were some carrot pieces) and three pieces of reheated fried tofu (these were cold and tough so maybe they didn't actually reheat, onion and roasted red bell pepper (not quite a stir fry). I don't recommend getting the banh mi because the sandwiches are pricey, but it does seem more portable than getting a rice plate. I paid $5.75 for the Thai BBQ chicken banh mi. Too many pickled vegetables and too little chicken. The chicken was decent but nothing special. It's convenient, I will give you that. But I will never crave banh mi enough to pay $5.75 for one sandwich. The voice of reason inside my head is a first-generation 89-year-old Vietnamese grandma that will never let me pay this much again. In fact, I would have walked away if I didn't promise my friend we would try this truck out for lunch that day. I have probably eaten 1 million banh mi sandwiches (I am keeping count in my head) in my lifetime. All of them were cheaper and most of them tasted better. This place USED TO BE my favorite place at the silo. Then, they stopped making the sandwiches fresh. They would come cold, soggy, and glued to the paper they were wrapped in. Now, they've completely taken them off the menu. It used to be their most popular / advertised menu item, and they've taken them away. I got the 5 spiced pork Banh Mi... And I thought it was meh. Wasn't over the top or anything. Bread is different from what I normally eat. It has the 5 spiced pork, the typical carrots/radish slices, cilantro, and some kind of sauce, and some slices of cucumber. When I first bit into the banh mi it had a weird taste to it because of the cucumber. Also it had a bunch of carrots in mine which also took away from the flavor. I still ate it thought because I was hungry, but I doubt I would be going again. It's 5.25 for the sandwich and 6$ with soda. Comparing this with Huong Lan in Sacramento for a sandwich that is 3.75 and taste authentic, I would rather commute there than eat this banh mi. read more

As a student who is talking all her classes around the silo, I have been tried out pretty much all the foods in silo. For Star ginger, I love their 5 spices pork rice bowl and curry Thai chicken rice bowl a lot! The price is reasonable with discount of Aggie cash! Less than $6 without ice Thai tea. The portion of rice/meat/veggies are great.. -Not so oily as Shal's, and meat is so tender and blend in great flavorful. -great combination of veggies! -But the seasonal soup: chicken rice is not recommended. I had it last wk. The portion is mini, and not much ingredients are added. Mostly salty "soup"... -I wish Star Ginger can open until dinner time(~5pm). This place is so good!!! Their Korean beef meatballs are super yummy! Not to mention their Thai Tea is the best I've ever had! The owners are really friendly and they made us feel welcome!!
