Wow! Ascended to my #1 restaurant spot in Davis. Definitely more of an infrequent meal since I would consider it more on the expensive side. Average dishes are ~20 dollars. Great spicy food and friendly staff. Food (10/10) - The food here is AMAZING! Perfect balance of spice to flavor and every single bite is electric. The sichuan numbing pepper in the Chongqing soup was DELICIOUS. Mix it with some of the white rice and you have a dish all by iteself. The chicken itself had a nice chew and was very fragrant. Loved the texture and flaovr of the vermicelli; nice bounce to the noodles while soaking in all the spicy soup. My one complaint would be that they have soft bones (sign of long boiling time) so be careful of that! Also got the spicy stir-fried pork kidney... don't diss it 'til you try it. Super good, with that nice bit of chew. Take a bite of pepper, kidney, and white rice and BOOM! Perfect bite. **Recommendation: Rice is a key component for the dishes here. Without rice, everything will be too spicy, too savory, and overall too overwhelming. The rice is the thing that helps tie everything together (as it frequently is) Service (8/10) - Good service; nothing notable. Nice people and I think most of them speak Mandarin. Service and seating was also fast. Order of things to come out of the kitchen was a bit strange: soup for the chicken, rice, stir-fry, chicken. Honestly, not that big of a problem but just decided to comment. Price (8/10) - The price here is a bit on the pricier side; $54 for 2 but there were some leftovers (had to make my own rice though). Some of the dishes are more worth than others. The Chonqing chicken was $25 but you got a large bowl of chicken with soup and vermicelli. On the other hand, the stir-fry for $20 was notably padded with vegetables and I would say a majority of the dish was not the kidney. At the very least, the taste of the food compensates. However, this place is likely not a college go-to. Overall, great restaurant that I will be coming back to again (maybe with my parents LOL) or at the very least, would come with a large group as it is more fitting for family style. We ordered the Stir-Fried Pork Intestine, Chili Fish, Stir-Fried Pork Belly with Cauliflower, and Lamb Spine. We also got the Vegetable Chow Mein, but I forgot to take a picture . The Stir-Fried Pork Intestine was easily the highlight for me. It had that classic Sichuan numbing spice and a ton of flavor without being overly oily. The intestine was super crispy, which gave it a really satisfying texture. I'd 100% order this again. I was also really impressed by the Stir-Fried Pork Belly with Cauliflower, especially the cauliflower. It soaked up all the flavor while still keeping its texture instead of getting soft or soggy. The Lamb Spine was delicious too. The radish soaked up all the broth and basically turned into little flavor bombs. The only downside is that the lamb spine can be a little difficult to eat. If you want something easy and straightforward, I'd probably skip it--but if you don't mind working for your food, it's definitely fun and worth trying. Overall, everything was flavorful and well-portioned. We had four people and still ended up with plenty of leftovers. Some dishes, especially the Chow Mein, were a little oily, but nothing too unexpected for this style of food. Our total came out to around $125 for four people, which felt pretty reasonable considering how much food we ordered and how much we had left over. Service was okay. The staff were knowledgeable and able to answer our questions, but they weren't particularly attentive. We were the first table there and practically the only people dining in at the time, although they may have been handling online orders. On the plus side, we were seated immediately and our food came out really quickly. The restaurant itself has a casual, family-friendly atmosphere that works really well for groups. I could see myself coming here for dinner with friends just as easily as with family. It was also very clean, had calming music, some cool artwork on the walls, and surprisingly clean restrooms. We came around 5:30 PM and didn't need a reservation. Parking is the usual Downtown Davis situation, but if you're already parked somewhere downtown, it should be within about a 10-minute walk. Overall, this is a pretty cool spot in Davis. The portions are generous, the food is flavorful, and that crispy pork intestine alone would bring me back. I had to come back to this restaurant to not only redeem my coupon for veggie spring rolls but also to get full size portions of some of my favorite dishes! I love all the plants inside. There's a lot of them! This adds life to the already beautifully decorated restaurant! I had time to kill before my school's open house. I decided to come check out this restaurant and order tofu, chow fun and the spring rolls. Everything was made fresh to order and I didn't have to wait long to receive my food. I went in a little after 4 PM and was able to place my order promptly and swiftly. There was plenty of parking out front and it wasn't that busy at all. There were many online orders for pick up and I love that they have a system where their food was kept in warm bags and easily acceptable for the food. Pick up drivers to come get their orders. Take out review. I order dandan noodles, beef roll, and brown sugar rice cakes. I like the authentic options on their menu. Restaurant was pretty busy and decorated for lunar new year which was nice. Dandan noodles were very flavorful - almost a bit too salty tbh. The numbing heat also layers a good deal so at one point I tapped out. Wish there was more pork / peanut to have more complexity but the overwhelming flavor was chili oil. Beef roll was a little dry overall. I liked the herbs rolled in with the beef but probably would not order that again. The rice cakes were friend well not too greasy and the brown sugar sauce was yummy. They offered 2 different menus. Hunan and Szechuan. We opted for the Szechuan menu. Spicy broiled fish: the fish was silky and big chunks. A bit too spicy and greasy for me. Salt style fried pork belly: I thought this was a deep fried dish but it wasn't. It is actually a stir fried pork belly. It was good though. Just a kick of spice. Premium beef with pickled vegetables: pickled veggies were crunchy and refreshing. Beef was a bit dry. Looked like a noodle soup especially since there were clear noodles included. Beef chow fun: this was my fave! It had an excellent charred taste which I really like. Noodles were super soft and tasted like freshly made. Beef rolls: beef was a bit dry but the rolls were good. When you click online ordering on their website it automatically takes you to a Beyond Menu page. I ordered and paid for three items for three people. They had my email and cell number. I received email confirmation of the order that would be ready at 8:04 pm. At 8:05 I arrived and was informed that they don't have the lamb soup (which I had ordered for myself) and I can order something else. I said it would have been nice to know this ahead of time. They said the lamb soup was seasonal and they had no way of letting Beyond Menu know it wasn't available. My wife and son were waiting at home for dinner and I didn't want to wait so I just asked for the other two items and a refund for the soup. They said they could not give me a refund and I would have to contact Beyond Menu by phone to request one. What?! Do you expect them to believe me and refund $26 for missing soup? They said I could take a picture of the receipt to show them. OMG! While waiting for the other two items I called Beyond Menu and they stated they would have to call the restaurant to confirm (which they did). I still had to wait twenty minutes for the other two items. If I had known that it would take so long I would have ordered something else for myself. I noticed a lot of Chinese patrons and that is always a good sign and was seated quickly with a smile. After hot tea I ordered a long time favorite Kung Pao chicken as it had been a long time since I savored the spicy peanut dish with peppers and steamed white rice . My guest ordered the Hunan spicy tofu that was amazing , rich and so many flavors combined, a savory delight. My Kung Pao chicken was very tasty and reminded me of plates I had eaten in SF. The volume of food was very large and required takeout boxing of all the dishes and rice. The seating was comfortable and the service was good, the waiter was attentive and timely and kept the water coming for this spice infused dining in Davis. Very happy to find authentic Chinese food right in downtown Davis! The service was quick and efficient from the moment we were seated. We ordered the wintermelon pork rib soup for an appetizer. It was a simple starting dish, though a little too spicy. For our main meal, we ordered the mala xiang guo (dry pot). I loved how many different items were in the pot (pork, fish balls, shrimp, Spam) and how fragrant the numbing mala spice was. But just like the soup, it was extremely salty. If you're feeling soupy with chicken, I would also recommend the Huang Men Ji. The table next to us ordered it, and it came in a boiling tin tray and looked so appetizing! Hunan has been around for a very long time and is a solid option for Chinese food in Davis. What I find is that your experience really depends on what you order though, as it caters to both American tastes and also more authentic Sichuan/Hunan tastes. There's two separate takeout menus, blue one is for the more Americanized dishes and the other pink one is for szechuan style dishes. The lunch specials are a fantastic value for the price, but the authentic flavors can be found ordering dishes separately for dinner. I ordered a couple dishes to go and thought they were spectacular. House special clay pot: A+ I love all clay pot dishes from Chinese restaurants because the contents are always cooked to perfection and tender. This one has an assortment of all different types of proteins and veggies. If you can't handle spice I'd recommend this highly. Boiled sliced fish in hot sauce: A If you can handle spice, then congrats you can order this authentic dish. Hunan cuisine includes a lot of hot chili peppers, and combined with the fish creates a dish packed with heat and flavor! There's definitely some numbing spice used too since I couldn't feel my tongue at some point. Also, I came here for a Yelp event awhile back. Food was pretty spot on. We ordered our food and got it pretty quickly. Our table had around 10 people - half ladies / half men. (Might have been because we ordered in Chinese? - but regardless they were pretty fast with the food coming out) What we ordered: Hot & Spicy Prawn - just didn't prefer it as I didn't really want to peel the shrimp but it was good. We both ordered the general tso chicken lunch special with half fried rice and half chow mein. It also comes with hot and sour soup and a crab Rangoon. The general chicken and fried rice were really good. I loved the flavor of the sauce. The chicken was crispy and delicious. They give you a good portion. I did not care for the chow mein, it just had no flavor. When I order my general chicken I always ask for extra sauce so I can put it on the rice and noodles...it makes a big difference. This place is awesome. A hidden gem in Davis, this is one of the better places in the sacramento area, especially if you like spicier food. My favourite dishes are the chili chicken (fried chicken pieces with chilies), steamed pork with preserved veggies (so delicious, melts in mouth tender), and the eggplant with chili fish (the chili is so flavorful, and the eggplant is so soft as well).
