If it happened to me it's probably happened to someone else. The owner of this salon (pretty short Asian man) sexually assaulted me doing my hair. He waited until everyone left and then started diming the lights, was weird but I didn't react or think a lot of it. He started to get anxious? And was pacing around and I grew impatient because I wanted to toner rinsed out it had been well over 10 minutes. He took me to the sink area and while I was laying back with my eyes closed he touched my breast. I said stop and he did. I looked up and around for a camera because I couldn't believe it, the camera is only in the front of the salon. He planned this, turned the lights down and took me to the back sink area with no cameras. At the end of the appointment he offered a discount . We didn't speak of the touching. I was so shocked I didn't know how to react. I was 23 and a dancer at the time. I had shared where I worked and my experience and gossip as I would any stylist. And honestly I thought he was gay and I was safe. Be careful with this salon owner and don't leave your daughters alone with him.

****all of the below still applies, but Wendy has moved to Russ-Salon. I'm keeping the 5 stars to rate Wendy, not Star Salon.**** Wendy Smith is my stylist at Star Salon. She recently moved there and I am thrilled with the location. It's close to everything (for me) and there is an abundance of parking (and a coffee shop next door). They use great products and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Wendy is awesome. I am really quite picky about who does my hair only because it's naturally curly and if cut wrong, looks terrible. I also color my hair and like most people, am particular about what I like. Wendy really listens to what your desires are and does a wonderful job at making sure you walk out of the shop happy. I can honestly say that I have never been so happy with how my hair looks. The cuts are always excellent and the color is spot on. Her techniques are clearly perfected and her amazing personality is a definite perk. I really couldn't see myself going to anyone else - and for me that is huge. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone....so go!! read more

I had been looking for a hair stylist off and on since I moved to Denver (almost 6 years ago now). I have really thick wavy hair that gets frizzy and unmanageable underneath between cuts. I also don't have a lot of extra money to spend on my hair. It was nearly impossible for me to get a cute shorter cut that lasted. I went to Wendy last December because of her awesome Yelp reviews, and haven't been to anyone else since. Wendy turned my coarse damaged-looking hair into a soft, sleek bob. It felt a million times better when I left the salon. ..And 3 months later, it was still an awesome cut. That NEVER happens with my hair. The salon itself has a great vibe. Wendy Smith rescued me from a bad haircut nearly two years ago and I've never looked back. She always does a great job, listens to what I say, and pays attention to feedback that I provide after each haircut. I trust her, which isn't something that always happens with hair stylists. I have fine, thin hair and prior to Wendy, I never received hair compliments. For the first time ever, I've received hair compliments and I've referred Wendy to other people with hair similar to mine. As someone who doesn't always enjoy talking to my hair stylist (nothing personal - it's just not my thing), I look forward to my haircuts with Wendy. She and the other Star Salon stylists are personable and I always enjoy my time at the salon. Plus, I haven't felt obligated to buy products, which is something I appreciate. And, Wendy holds Sunday hours which I find super convenient, and I find it relatively easy to book appointments. One word for the Keratin Straightening Treatment...AMAZING!!!! Thank you so much Wendy for suggesting and doing it for me! Wendy is the best at what she does I wont go to any other stylist!! :)The Keratin Straightening Treatment has saved my summer; I have long and very thick naturally curly hair that frizzes, getting straight hair can be a challenge. I wanted something easy for summer, something where I could get out of the shower and be out the door in 20 min. When I asked Wendy what I could do she suggested the straightening treatment. At first I was a little skeptical but I LOVE IT. I can't believe I didn't do it sooner! My hair is so much more manageable, shiny, silky, and smooth and I can get out of the shower, blow dry and go through my hair with my flat iron and I'm out the door in 20-30 min looking fab and that includes doing make-up and getting dressed! I have been going to Taylor at Start Salon for almost one year, and I have never been happier with my hair. I had no idea what I wanted when I went in the first time. Yet, even with a very inarticulate explanation of what I thought I wanted, she hooked me up with a very unique cut and matched my color perfectly. I get so many compliments on my hair since I have been going to her. She is a color-master! She really knows how to blend low and high tones, so that if you can't get there before you're due for retouching, there are no glaring roots. I got my hair cut a week ago by Jed and I just want to say that no matter what I do, my hair looks FANTASTIC (and that includes not styling it at all)! It was my first time going to Star Salon and Jed and I have to say that I will never go anywhere else. I was wanting to try a new style and Jed completely understood what I was wanting to do with my hair and was truly an artist in giving me both the style I want and making sure that the cut would really work for me. The haircut is definitely the best I've had in a long time, and I have to say that going to Jed is fun too! Wendy is simply amazing. I have been going to her for cuts and highlights for almost 1 year since moving to Colorado. Previously, I had been a Vidal girl for several years - from D.C. to New York to Boston. Needless to say, I have very high expectations. Wendy was very respectful and respective of what I was looking for. She brightened me up for summer, trimmed my bangs and thinned me out as I have very thick hair, after asking if I minded, which of course I did not! Very reasonably priced and I was out of her chair in less than 2 hours, which never happens! Her assistant, Amy, was very attentive and they have a great working relationship. Being a newbie to Denver, I asked around for a place to go...ask for Duane when you do. Trusting your hair to someone can be a little tough but Duane does an absolutely amazing job. He listened well to my not so great description of what I wanted, had some great ideas for me and my hair looks better than it has in years. He has very fair prices to boot. The on line scheduling makes it easy to make an appointment and I gotta give them all credit for working through a major blizzard and not closing shop for the day this past winter....more than ankle deep and still coming down heavy and they stayed open, wow! Wendy is incredible. She knows exactly what cut will be flattering and her coloring is impeccable. I have always received so many compliments every time I see Wendy, especially when I let her try something new. Plus, she is kind, warm, and very easy to talk to. I would trust Wendy in anything she recommends, and in anything she says won't look good--and I think that is really hard to find in a hair stylist. As for the staff, everyone else at Star is accommodating, friendly, and helpful. (extra bonus: Wendy comes in on Sundays to accommodate her clients--like me--that have a hard time getting in during business hours, AND she has complimentary mimosas). Duane Schneider is Fantastic! I've been going to him for a few years now and every time I see him, I continue to be thoroughly impressed with how he handles my very long, curly, and somewhat unruly hair...and ME! He has been the first to convince me to cut off over 6 inches (couple years ago) which I ended up absolutely loving; he anticipated my needs, when I didn't want to do my normal highlight because of budget and recommended a style I didn't even know existed, "Hombre", which is perfect. For the first time in a long time, I found someone who gets my hair -- thank you Jenny Gonzalez! I have fairly straight hair without much natural body, and I take a minimalist approach to styling, so I needed a great cut that would stand on its own without having to be propped up with a lot of styling products and tools. I randomly found Wendy a few years ago and I had her chop my hair from long to short on a whim and it was fantastic! She always does a great job with my hair; long, short and in-between. She is fabulous with color and consistenly gives me a great haircut. I have to drive pretty far to see her...but it is worth it! Recently I went the expedient route and chose someone closer. I have had some very, very bad hair experiences so when I moved to Denver I looked long and hard for a stylist and asked around to a lot of friends. Wendy was recommended to me and I couldn't be happier. Wendy has been my stylist for almost 3 years now and I would never let anyone else do my hair. I have done dark brown with thick bangs, long blonde with waves, and a short bob with lots of layers. EVERY time it's fantastic. Plus, she's great to chat with on those longer appointments when I've let my roots grow out waaaay too long! After long consideration of where to get all of my hair cut off for a bob, I chose Wendy and I am so glad I did. I've been going to her since November 2011 and I don't think I would go to anyone else. She is fast and personable while also being extremely accurate when cutting my hair. She did three different processes on my hair to account for that given my hair reaches my mid back and I have a lot of it. My hair texture is fairly curly, at 57 I am also getting some silver. I also have a non-traditional cut (think Bettie Page) with the bangs. She She consulted with me for the cut and did an amazing job. She accounted for the length, the type of curl I have and the thickness in how to cut it. Now I can either wear it natural, straighten it or roll it and the style will work. The quality of her work and products speaks for itself. We have done many colors and styles through our time together and I always get so many compliments. The last several years we have done vivid blues and greens. I have never had a color that stays longer and makes my hair feel healthy. The color doesn't fade and covers my grays so well, which says a lot about the quality of the products she uses. I usually go in every 3/4 months to get it recolored and it's only because my grays are growing in. Alicia also started cutting my kiddos hair when he was 1 and she is so good with him. She is great at listening to what he wants and making sure that she really understands. She is great with him and he loves going in to see her to get a fresh do. I had trouble with the website so I called and spoke with Kait, explained my situation, and she recommended the owner, Cue. I arrived with the idea I needed a very short pixie cut - scorched Earth chop. Cue worked with me and really helped me discover a cute, modern, and manageable style that was not as extreme as what I thought I needed. **Also, don't park on the street at certain times.** It was snowing and after 5pm on Friday and the parking enforcement put a boot on a vehicle, and was ticketing others. My rental car was about to be cited and Erin took my keys, ran out and stopped the citation, moved my car, all in the snow with no jacket, as time was of the essence. Way above and beyond. I will return to this shop when I roll through Denver again, parking in a legal spot!

I'm one of those don't EVER cut my hair and just color the grays kind of gals. I have had long hair since I was in elementary school and have refused bangs, highlights, and layers. It's a PAIN to style because it takes forver to style/blow dry. My hair is now curly as opposed to straight as a board as it was when I was younger. However, I had been thinking of cutting off 10 inches for locks for love (and since it's been a HOT summer!). I went in with the news and immediately Nicole was super excited, but cautiously optimistic. She knows I don't do "change" with my hair well. I am her most boring client! She wanted to be sure I was comfortable making such a drastic change. I confirmed my intent as I had been thinking about it for several months and our adventure began! That same day, three other lucky ladies were chopping off their hair for charitable wig donations. So it was definitely a team effort across the board and made it more fun! I brought 4-5 pictures ranging from super short to should length. We reviewed and discussed each one. Utimately, we went with an in between cut so it wouldn't be such a drastic change. Nicole's recomendation was spot on because it was a shocking change. I absolutely LOVE my new "short" hair (just above shoulder length). She also recomended a different hair wig company that gave children wigs for FREE (instead of charging them like Locks for Love). She knew exactly how to rubber band the hair for submission and took care of everything. I spent at least a week running my fingers through my hair in complete awe after it was done. It felt SO light! It was EASY to style (curly OR straight!!). I LOOKED and FELT young!! and NO TANGLES omg!! I didn't want to wash it for fear I would never be able to replicate how great it looked and felt. Ultimately, it's been so much easier to style and I can still wear it up when I workout (!!). Win win!

I appreciate her work to help cover my roots. The grey hairs I have are stubborn and Lora works her magic to help cover them. Her shop has a lot of neat items and would be a great spot if you need to shop for gifts or treat yourself to something fun. Due to the ongoing construction along east colfax, the parking can be tricky, but there are spots nearby. Be sure you know how to parallel park!
