Oh, Starbene... you will remain the stuff of dreams. This mighty little gluten free bakery was one of my favorite shops in all my Italian travels. They have a wide assortment of gluten free goodies -- from cookies to pies to savory bread-based delights. It's all priced quite fairly, too. I came in around 6pm on a Friday, and the kind woman behind the counter advised me to come back in the morning because they had more things in the mornings. I was sincerely baffled and said-- wait, more?! To me, they had a ton of great options even at 6pm! Apparently the cases are packed full in the mornings and if you want your best pick of the lot, go then. But if you're like me and not able to do that for whatever reason, you'll still find plenty! I can't have gluten or dairy. Sometimes it's hard to find dairy free goodies in a gluten free bakery. Not so with Starbene! They had cookies, pies and tarts as well as some bread-based savory items -- all clearly marked as without dairy. Grazie, Starbene!! Made my whole night! I ended up getting some cookies (3 for 1€) -- they were almost like thumbprints, with blackberry jam filling and with chocolate hazelnut filling. So. Good. I also got an apricot jam tart (~3€, I think). It was also delicious! The apricot jam was just the right amount of sweet and the crust was perfectly flakey. Plus, there was a heart shape on top which was just the sweetest little detail. I also got a focaccina, which was kind of like a bread roll pizza without cheese or sauce. It was super good! I took it up to Piazzale Michelangelo and enjoyed it with a view of the city. Perfection! My next visit to Florence, Starbene's will be a must do. No question about it. This place was ok. I've had better here in NY and other local areas. I found there stuff to be very dry and no flavor. Anyway, we went back last December (2022) it was closed. We didn't find it again when we walked past the direction. read more

Wow wow wow! I'm visiting from USA and totally blown away by the items available at Starbene. They offer plenty of items that are gf and vegan too. We went later in the day, but there were still plenty of fresh bakery items available. They also have pizza, calzones, etc. so you can dine in at their tiny counter or take it to go. My friend and I opted to try their pizza, which was tasty, but I cannot stress how amazing the pastries are. I ordered so many items but so far my favorite is a crema turnover, it was probably the most delicious thing I've eaten since my arrival in Italy. This is an amazing gluten free only bakery with all kinds of goodies including small pizzas, focaccia sandwiches, all of the pastries and cookies you might desire. They also sell some gluten free brands of pastas, breads, wraps etc to make your favorite meals at home. The lady who runs the place speaks very little English but all you have to do really is point to the yummy food and it will be in a bag for you. We purchased a few things for my celiac husband but only photographed some because he inhaled it so fast :) The prices are very very reasonable and affordable! €14 for a bad full of goodness! read more

This place is truly a gem. What are the chances of having a dedicated gluten free bakery in Florence. Not everything is vegan but they did have two gf vegan pastries and several gf dairy free focaccia and pizzas. All were delicious! The place itself is super cute and clean. The staff was lovely. The options were varied. I didn't LOVE the food. It did make it easy, however, to find something gluten-free for my family to eat. I have never been able to eat a cannoli or croissant so I have no comparison, but this place allowed me to try delicious gluten free pasteries I could never have back home! Line was long and the selection of both sweet and savory options was great! read more

As a gluten free person in Europe Starbene is a true luxury. I visited two times in my short stay and each was better than the last. I even took some goodies back to the room. The first day I had a ham and cheese panini that was light and flaky. The pane/roll I took back for a picnic was soft and yummy... ya know like bread! The next trip I had sweet croissant with jam AND my boyfriend was kind enough to grab a chocolate eclair to share. He is not gluten free and swears he wouldn't know the difference. This is a dedicated gluten free cafe. There isn't much place to sit, but you can enjoy your pastry or a warmed up slice of pizza at the bar or in a small alcove. Otherwise I'd recommend take away. I stocked up on pastries and a couple rolls for my trip home tomorrow. My husband who isn't gluten free enjoyed their pizza with ham and went back for a focaccia with ham which he said was even better! They also have a variety of brands of gluten free items for sale including cookies, beans, and several pastas, dried and fresh. We would absolutely go back if we were here longer! read more

Wow wow wow. Maybe one of the top 2 gluten free bakeries I have ever been to (and that's what I first scope out when I go to a new place). First, i am also dairy free, my sibling is soy free, and we still found plenty to share. There are flatbreads and pizzas and sandwiches - all dairy and dairy free options - if you're looking for savory. And then the sweets!! The most glorious selection of sweet baked goods! There's a smaller vegan section, and a very large section that had egg and/or butter and/or cream. You just have to ask around if you have other constraints, but every single thing is gluten free. Including their decent selection of packaged pastas and cookies/crackers. We really enjoyed going here (twice!) and would go back in a heartbeat! read more

GLUTEN FREE!!! I was so excited to find this place! EVERYTHING is gluten free and what a selection. Unbelievable the variety of pizzas, panini, pastries, groceries, and Beer! I discovered gluten free Peroni here and really enjoyed it. Wish they would have been open a little later, but really happy they are open every day! If you are gluten free you have to come here! SO WONDERFUL! They have literally every pastry that you have been dreaming of. Very good gluten-free! We had the spinach pie, and an assortment of cookies. The prices are extremely reasonable, the shop is charming and clean, and the selection is abundant. Where we live at home, we have numerous gluten-free bakeries so perhaps we are a little picky. However we would still say it is very good. Not the best we have ever had, but very, very good.
