I have to admit - I, too, have addictive tendencies. I may be commitment-phobic, but for the most part, I can really appreciate certain "constants" in my life. Unfortunately, caffeine is one of 'em. But, not just any caffeine. It pretty much has to come in the form of a Double Hazelnut or Peppermint Mocha, and it has to be readily available. Yet another unfortunate circumstance, is that Starbuck's just happens to be EVERYWHERE. When I'm house- and pet-sitting for my co-worker in the area, Starbuck's in Crystal Springs Village is my go-to cafe. This particular spot has a very open layout, outdoor seating and a fireplace. Today, I was super-impressed because I actually saw them cleaning out the refrigerated display cases (she was on her knees, scrubbing all that gunk underneath the display trays. What can I say, I'm easily pleased). I have yet to experience an unfriendly Starbuck's in my immediate peninsula vicinity and this one's no exception. I'm glad that most people in general love this place. but this is more for them, the employees and maybe the employer. I accidentally knocked over my coffee at the condiment station. I kindly alerted the staff, apologized then proceeded to to try to clean the area and keep it safe. Yes it was busy yes it was a pain in the ass. The girl came over to clean; I'm helping and apologizing. Did she acknowledge my attempts to help, no! Did she offer another drink, it was an accident, no! It was just a grande f****** coffee. It's not coming out of her paycheck! I wish I just left and not even attempted to help. I wish I would have walked the coffee and tracked the mess to a greater degree. I will never go in again to this Starbucks. And I hope when something similar happens to her, she receives the same kind of passive aggressive treatment I received from her. This is hands down the best Starbucks I've ever been to. The staff are friendly, the parking is typically decent, and the food and drinks usually come out just as you've ordered them. The biggest problem I have with this Starbucks is that the customers are rude and annoying. For example, people frequently stand in the stupidest places here. The protocol is that once you've ordered your drink, then you should stand or sit out of the way until the Barista calls your name. The people that pay and then immediately crowd the bar are freaking retarded; they just make my ingress & egress that much more difficult and frequently grab my order because they are too stupid and/or impatient to know any better. The worst is when people stand willy nilly in a place that blocks everybody. For example, people love to chat right in the doorway...seems like a great place to have a conversation! Let me guess, you aren't too bright. Who cares that you have chosen the worst spot possible, it's your world you gibronis...we're just living in it!. On a side note, gibroni-ism is rampant in this area of San Mateo. I've come to the conclusion that the people that are annoying indoors also tend to be the worst drivers on the road, but I'll save that for a different day. What it boils down to is situational awareness, and the sad truth is that most folks in this shopping center just don't have it. Also, I have been disappointed that bums have been showing up and begging for change in the parking lot...Haight/Ashbury is that-a-way you degenerates. A concerted effort apparent to make this location into a neighborhood congregating hub. Large room with tables and comfy chairs spread out with a fireplace and outdoor seating to boot. Went there to get some work done and was impressed with the traffic over several hours in the afternoon with businessmen congregating for a meeting, soccer moms and dads passing through after practice and assorted others. Bully for them...if it weren't for Dianda's Bakery in the same complex which is more deserving of this mantle for its authenticity and well earned and worn in coziness. read more

Why must you ask my name you can never get it right ?!?- I contemplate having an alter ego coffee name, but can never get myself to do it. I guess I just haven't come up with the right name yet. First of all, I'm not a huge fan of Starbucks, but I found myself here one morning on my way to work because I was running errands near by. I ordered my partially hm drink - nonfat light chocolate mocha - I prefer non fat milk and the normal amount of chocolate in a mocha is a bit overwhelming, so just half of what they normally do is perfect. However the guy didn't get what I meant by light chocolate so then I asked how many pumps of chocolate do they put in a grande, just put half - he didn't know and proceeded to tell me the wrong amount, but whatever the topper is they heard my name as Mabo - not a huge fan of butchering my name. I wasn't being difficult, it wasn't super early in the morning, it wasn't crowded and I wasn't being cranky. read more

I'm so grateful that I have a clean, spacious, well-kept Starbuck's coffee shop in my neighborhood. For the past three weeks, there's been some serious construction and re-roofing going on around my house. The noise is deafening and since I work from home, I can't hear myself think when the work gets really loud. I escape to my Starbucks where the baristas probably think the reason why I'm coming in so often and staying so long is that I'm either homeless or I have a thing for one of them. But no matter: they are all super friendly and one actually remembers my name and what drink I like. This is the neatest, of all Starbuck's I've ever visited -- someone goes around like clockwork to wipe tables, straighten up and pick up the trash. Try the Clover press coffee the next time you go. I am a fan of this Starbucks in particular -- to study and work. No other Starbucks. Here are my reasons: 1. Fast Wi-Fi -- it is so hard to find a coffee shop with SEATS + PLUGS + fast WiFi in SAN MATEO/Burlingame. Burlingame is horrible. Peet's has no seats. Starbucks has slow WiFi unless you sit in the back corner which has 5 seats or so. And Cafe Barista is closed. Le Boulange doesn't offer free WiFi. 2. Awesome service -- the staff and the baristas are very friendly. There's a sense of community amongst the customers and workers, or so it seems. I like it. 3. Plenty of parking even during high peak times (5-7pm) unlike downtown San Mateo during dinner time. 4. Enough seats indoor and outdoor and plugs. Basically, if you can find parking relatively easy and there is enough seating and plus, good WiFi, friendly staff ... then the coffee being mediocre is ok with me. :D But that's just me ;) read more

The best Starbucks in San Mateo, hands down. They always get my order right, they know me by name, the baristas are always polite and courteous... I've been coming here at least twice a week for three years now, and I think they've messed up my order a few times. One of my friends dropped her drink on the ground and they made another one for her, without an extra charge, and without her even asking - she was more than willing to pay for another Vivanno. Something similar happened at a different Starbucks, and my friend had to pay for another drink. The only downsides to this Starbucks are that they tend to run out of the sandwiches very quickly, and they close at 20:00. Blows the downtown location out of the water. read more

I agree with Jackie; this place is "my home away from home." The Crystal Springs Starbucks is spacious, comforting, clean, and always orderly. The staff is extremely kind and professional. They make the effort to know you and your drink if you are a regular. On cold days it's nice to relax in their huge armchairs by the fireplace as you sip on your drink of choice. My favorite starbucks location in San Mateo. I don't know if it's sad or not that they know me by name, or the fact that before I even get to the register they have my drink ready for me. It's busy, but they usually get through the line pretty quickly. They have a decent selection of food and pastries and they do a really great job with odd orders for coffee. I usually have a good experience but last weekend wasn't the case! So I ordered a drink without any sugary syrup and wanted heavy cream instead of splash of milk! I'm doing keto! As I'm watching the guy prepare my drink, he takes out 2% milk and puts it in the coffee so I told the guy that I wanted heavy cream! He turns around and tells me yes it was heavy cream! I love how homey this Starbucks is. It's decorated slightly different from other Starbucks, with some amazingly gorgeous pictures on the wall. It's not too usually me opens later than some other starbucks hat I've visited. I asked them for an odd order, the widow maker (half iced black coffee, half iced black tea). And while they didn't know what it was, the barista was actually excited to make this. He asked me afterwards how I liked it and was genuinely happy that I liked it. I stayed pretty much until closing time, but they never ever tried to kick me out. They were super polite and just waited until we were all ready to leave before closing shop. This is my go to Starbucks for when is ant to get work done. I also love that they have a real fireplace that you can sit next to!! Makes me feel like I'm at home. :) read more

True, it's not exactly the best place to study unless you have really good noise canceling earbuds, but what do you expect from a place that grinds coffee and froths milk all day? It's a coffeeshop, not a library. Honestly though, I love that this place is slightly noisy; sometimes I come down here just to get away from the dreadful silence that is my house. Everyone is really friendly, baristas and patrons alike. I don't know how to truly express how much I love this Starbucks. It's just so cozy, and all the people who work here are just super sweet. Even if I'm not in need of a caffeine fix, I'll make it a point to visit, just to say Hi to the baristas. I'm seriously here so often that I've been told by them that I might as well work here. we've stopped by before for just brewed coffees and everything was just fine. yesterday we stopped for coffee, frap, and 2 breakfast sandwiches. ordered the tall coffee, boom. ordered two breakfast sandwiches heated, boom. java chip frap...not so easy. we collected our coffee and sandwiches and found a table outside. i went back in for my frap. i waited while 3 other customers picked up their orders. (i'd just finished sitting through a 3+ hour chemo session, so i'm a patient person), but was wondering what was up. one of the speciality drink barristas, looked up and asked me what i was waiting for. told him, grande java chip frap. well, golly gee, he jumped up at least 3 inches, exclaimed OH, turned around and opened up the frap maker cover, pulled out the pitcher, poured it into the cup, added the whipped cream and set it on the counter. without a, sorry, here ya go, nothing. unfortunately, we'll be here a few more times for infusion, but next time, we'll head to 4th avenue location, where we KNOW they KNOW about customer service. read more

Like many Starbucks locations, it can be a challenge to get a table even though they have a fair amount of seating, including a front patio. Like any other starbucks. Great service and clean venue. There was a very unpleasant consumer there and I thought the manager and the barista handle themselves quite well. The mom complained that the hot chocolate wasn't hot enough for her child and she was really displeased. I usually order on the app here because it's on the way to work. Most of the staff are very accommodating and friendly. There is one gentleman who I notice usually doesn't call out the names or orders of the drinks he places on the counter, which is difficult as you have to go and look each time he silently places a drink there, to see if it's yours or not. I think some of the employees have worked here awhile and may be in the "work rut" of just showing up each day. But it's Starbucks and I get that the larger a corp gets, the less customer friendly/personable thins can become. I wish there was a smaller coffee shop in the area with similar offerings. read more

I come here for morning brew and contemplate the universe thoroughly and along with that I consciously bring my 64 water bottle to stay hydrated and not have future kidney problems, drink your h2o young ones and reduce the waste of paper as much as possible* I also have my cute sbux mug that I purchased as to not use their cups. In the mug I tend to fill with my coconut creamer- the barista didn't even bother to look and started pouring hot water in there and then asking "oh did you want that in here?" Its okay, it's hot water no biggie. Tip: Any mug you purchase from sbux ALWAYS check out the bottom to see the max ounces the mug will contain no matter the size and proportion. That being the mug I purchased contains a MAX of 12 oz which equates to a tall drink. I place couple of ounces of creamer therefore I always ask for a short coffee which is 8 oz to brim in a short cup. That means it I pay for a short coffee with a cup discount- thank you college years of being on a budget and working at sbux! Another tip- Based on sbux policy which I have called for and validated- the customer is not to be charged for less than 4 oz of soy milk. Seeing that the baristas don't like that I know how to be a savvy consumer they seem to not be as happy and chipper, not my issue but the lack of positive vibes is a bummer when I just ask for coffee and water then tip you for simply pouring. A spacious and well lit location with enough tables and chairs to sit and chat, or to plop open your laptop to do some work away from the office. Since it opened, it has become a neighborhood gathering spot, and I always manage to see someone I know. Convenient for me as this is one of my stops before I hit the freeway to get to work. I'm not one to rate so low, but this is probably one of the worst starbucks experiences I've had. I walked in around 4pm in search of a late lunch and decaf drink. The store looked like it had a serious rush, everything was a mess (and I'm usually not one to complain), and there was maybe 8 pastries and 4 ham sandwiches to choose from. I made my way over to Safeway to grab a turkey sandwich, and then back to Starbucks for my drink. Then it just kept on getting worse. It's been a hot week so I went for an iced decaf coffee... which I should know better than to order, because Starbucks doesn't do iced decaf coffee, but they usually offer me an iced decaf americano. I wasn't even offered that, they just looked at me blankly after saying they didn't do decaf. Fair enough, I order my decaf americano with light ice, and pay. To the cashier's credit, he did give a lot of eye contact. I get my americano, which is tepid in temperature, but by that time I could be bothered to deal with barista who had already given me a dirty look when I asked for light ice and decaf to boot. She literally tipped 4 ice cubes into a steaming hot drink. Yes I asked for light ice, but seriously? Next came the cream and sugar bar. Completely out, save the bottom of the half and half. I hand the empty containers to the person working behind the bar, and let them know their empty, with very little response in return. I find a seat at a sticky table and sip on my tepid americano. End of story. Maybe it was an off day, but wow, Starbucks you disappointed me. I shall have to find a local independent coffee shop next time I'm visiting family in that area. read more

The staff is pretty nice and friendly, but they all seem distracted. Every time I go there, I get good service...but not the best, and the staff are always distracted by having personal chats with each other. The food is alright...standard Starbucks fare (pastries & breakfast sandwiches). At least they don't mix up the drink orders, and they're always busy (which can sometimes be a down side for rushing customers). Overall, it's good but not great. I know they're really busy and sometimes a little short staffed....but I've seen some of the more packed locs in SF with only 2 staffers work more efficiently. read more
