I was disappointed with the service I had here today esp after tipping 20%. A woman with short hair and glasses was in particularly unhelpful. I came in with three kids - one in a pram. Ordered all of us drinks and cakes and was unable to take everything outside as they had run out of trays and were unable to provide me with one. Bearing in mind I had all the kids drinks and treats as well as my own and a 2 year old in a pram. Since they couldn't provide me with something to carry everything out at once with, it meant leaving the kids at one point which is not safe. When the woman said they did not have trays I politely asked in that case could they help me bring the coffees outside and she refused to due to there "only" being two staff present. There was two orders after me- hardly run off their feet! If two orders makes it too hard for them to dash out for 10-15 seconds and help someone who has just tipped them 20% then she probably is not equipped for the job. This can be done when the two orders after have been done- it's not rocket science! I am actually embarrassed for them that, to them, this was too hard to do under the circumstances Having worked in hospitality for years this service was poor and came across as just plain lazy and incompetent. I have personally handled much busier places on my own and was running food and drinks to boot- I know when people are too busy and when to give them grace and this was not it. It gave off that these people won't move an inch for a customer if they don't have to which is also sad to see. Her attitude was very false, saying "sorry" passive aggresively and still unwilling to help or find a solution. She was just not bothered to help and was trying to get rid of me. When did everyone become so rude and inconsiderate that we can't do the bare minimum to help ppl out, esp with kids involved? Won't be coming back and will be telling ppl not to come back either. Went in today 05/04 to grab a simple Americano & black tie. Older women with white hair at the cash register looked annoyed (still was nice) and it was probably because we asked NICELY* for a specific banana bread and it probably annoyed her cause everything AFTER THAT was just completely off. Gave us our bread and continued to make our drinks. Got my black tie within 3 minutes cool. The Americano? They made it and just let it sit there on the counter. We stood there for about 10min watched people get their orders drinks being put over our coffee with no lid just open and sitting there. And after the 10min it was kind of getting to a point where I was going to say something as soon as I was inching towards the front the barista THEN gave another woman her order once again going over the open cup and THEN closed the cup and called it out. This Peet has unfriendly employees, especially at night. They don't seem like they want to work and I feel inconvenienced when I order drinks one hour before closing time. I've come here several times because it's a good halfway point between the sales reps I work with and our two offices. It is interesting that they use cold brew to create black tie, which is kind of like vietnamese ice coffee on the on the weaker side. I enjoy it more than Vietnamese ice coffee because it's very strong. Service is a bit slow because it only have one barista while many people are ordering. I like the interior. pretty standard peet's located in downtown san mateo. idk why but after i parked, across the street, i had a hard time finding this location, walking to the other end of 3rd ave...user error! this peet's occupies the corner lot so it was a bit more spacious than other peet's location i've been to. i needed to use the restroom, noticed the keypad lock, asked for the code and was told that no code was needed, nice! restroom was actually decently clean, thank you! since i placed my order using the peetnik app on my phone, my order was waiting for me on the pickup shelf, still warm! staff was quite friendly, during my short interaction with them. there was plenty of seating indoors and out, and on this lovely, warm-ish day in november, i chose to sit outside and enjoy my hot sandwich. their outdoor seating is actually on b street, which is partially closed to vehicles, so nice and spacious here. definitely coming back to this location! read more

This is my favorite coffee shop to stop by early in the morning when on the way to work. I will stop here sometimes to get coffee. The parking is not a problem at all especially in the morning. Walked into Peet's, excited since they had no line. We ordered a hot chocolate, caramel latte, almond croissant, and banana nut bread. Let's start with the awful lady at the register, she's so rude. She kept correcting the way my husband was ordering his coffee. As I was ordering she cut me off and asked the customer behind us if he wanted his usual coffee, um ok I'm glad you have regular customers but finish an order at a time. When we ordered the pastries she seemed irritated that we wanted them warm. What more can I add? This Peet's Coffee Shop is at the downtown San Mateo location just a block away from Philz. I love Philz, but when the line is crazy long and you just need a caffeine fix real quick, then head on here. Use your Peetnik app to check-in to accumulate points and place your order. The interior is spacious with plenty of tables and they have free Wi-Fi, which is pretty much standard on every Peet's location I've been to. Also if you need to use the restroom, you'll need to ask for the code, which I prefer better than asking for a key that's attached to an end of an long object that makes me cringe when I touch it. I'm lucky I live within minutes away from Peet's or Philz Coffee. With the ever growing caffeine addicted society and especially coffeehouses popping up everywhere in downtown San Mateo, one can be overwhelmed where to go. Philz is famous for its Mojito while Starbucks, locks its customers with loyalty perks and convenience everywhere. Peet's however and with its recent bought out by billionaire investors continues to be the middle player of it all. They offer good drip strong coffee while maintaining a good variety of beverages from hot to ice cold coffee. Since I started cycling again, I find Peet's quite convenient with its plentiful bicycle parking. I also love their Major Dickenson batch beans which is the whole purpose usually, of my visit. Customer service can be a hit or miss depending on the time of day, but you might just get lucky and get a really good service. Cheers! read more

Pretty chill coffee place Located in the downtown area, this place is hard to miss. Lots of big windows so you can see the entire store from the outside. The waitstaff there are all very friendly. The drinks are pretty good--pretty much what you'd expect at a local peet's. The inside is pretty clean--you can tell they took efforts in keeping it clean. If you are trying to work here, good luck finding a seat. While they do have outlets, it's not spaced out. I had to wait for a couple of people to leave to jump at them. I do love me some Peet's! My favorite here is the regular iced coffee, white chocolate mocha latte and vanilla latte. These never disappoint! This location is also really conveniently in the middle of the downtown San Mateo so if you are walking around after dinner and need to warm up, this is the place to go. The people who work here are usually friendly and nice. One time they forgot one of the drinks I ordered and they made it up to me and more! They kindly upgraded my drink and gave me a free cookie which was a really nice gesture. Love it here! read more

A friend of ours has been giving us free drink cards to Peets because he doesn't like the way they make coffee in house. The honey usually heads here in on a weekend morning to grab himself a free coffee and free tea for me. Tonight I stopped in for myself. The layout of this space is similar to the Berkeley location I didn't like, it was also chilly in the cafe for an October evening - which I also didn't like. The service was friendly but nothing spectacular, and my tea was water tasting for a good 15 minutes after I purchased it. Without the drink cards I probably would not come in here for tea, it's just not flavored the way I like. But free, so three stars. read more
