Was excited when this location opened up in North Bay. The line is so confusing... the self-serve kiosk is in a corner with the line leading towards the door, but that's also where people wait to pick up their drinks. Even though there were quite a few people on a Friday in the afternoon, service was quick. No where to sit inside but there's a bench right outside. -Creme Brulee Matcha Swirl: on the sweeter side, blended cream with the matcha make it a unique take on a traditional matcha latte. -Strawberry Matcha Latte: refreshing and they use fresh strawberry puree. only thing is it's very strawberry forward so it didn't balance with the matcha as well. Still a solid place to grab matcha in San Mateo!
The matcha creme brûlée is hands down my favorite drink here.The creme brûlée part really has a strong matcha flavor. The strawberry yuzu matcha is a little on the sweet side but still had a strong matcha taste, would probably get it without the strawberry next time. The shop is pretty bare, no seating whatsoever and you order at the self service kiosk.
First time trying Izumi Matcha and going into the place, I was confused where the line was or how to order until another customer told me where to order. Going to this location you go in and turn to the right, there will be two tablets where you can order from. The wait was not long, I ordered the creme brûlée matcha drink. The drink was delicious, highly recommend trying it out.
Hmmm, I've never had Izumi Matcha before but I've seen enough TikTok videos of people hyping up the creme brûlée matcha drink to know I need to give it a try. The new spot is across the street from Paris Baguette and it's interesting because there's decent amount of space inside but no tables or chairs to sit at so it's more of a take it and go kind of vibe. A few benches outside along the street are available. They have tablets off to the far inside for you to order so don't mistake their counters for ordering, it's strictly for orders to be picked up. I opted for their creme brûlée matcha drink and I thought it was okay, but I wasn't really impressed and there were clumps of cream or matcha in it that threw me off. The modern finishes inside gives it a "don't touch me I'm sterile" kind of vibe as there's not much interaction to be had with the workers except when they call out your name for your order. Overall, I'm interested to come back and try something else but I'm not in a hurry either.
I really liked the Cupertino location so I had high hopes when they opened up in San Mateo, but I feel like the drinks aren't as good here? I remembered the matcha being whisked to order at the other location, but here, you could see the jugs of pre-prepared and batched matcha, so maybe that's why I felt like it wasn't as good. The regular honey matcha latte was just alright and the strawberry matcha latte was good just bc I feel like strawberry is always good. Still nice that they give the option for a free double shot matcha. You order at 2 kiosks in the corner of the shop, and the store itself is pretty big with no seating but plenty of space to hover/sit on the window sills. Drinks come out fairly fast.

I didn't realize there was an Izumi store in the peninsula before noticing it here in San Mateo while walking around after lunch during a visit from SF. I decided to stop by to compare it to the only other location I've been to in Cupertino. I got the strawberry yuzu matcha for something light. It was good and tasted the same to me. I think the strawberry flavor slightly overpowers the yuzu and matcha though. The shop was only a little busy on a Sunday afternoon, nowhere near the wait time as in Cupertino. The time to order and pick up was quite reasonable.
Great new matcha spot in downtown San Mateo! I was really excited to try the crème brûlée matcha swirl they're known for, but when I visited on Wednesday at 11:20 AM, it was already sold out. Instead, I ordered the classic matcha latte and the cheese mousse matcha, and both were delicious. I loved the strength of the matcha flavor. Some places make it too light, but this one had the perfect balance. There is no seating available, so it is more of a grab and go spot, but the space itself is very open and clean. I do wish they added some seating along the sides. Parking is convenient with street parking and a garage right next to the building. It can get very crowded during peak hours, especially on weekends, so it is best to plan ahead.

Initially the drink was good, but after I got through 25% of it, all I i could taste was watered down matcha. This made me sad because I use the same matcha that they use when I make mine at home, so it was a tad disappointing. Next time I come back, I think i'll try my go-to which is a strawberry matcha latte. My other complaint is that there isn't anywhere to sit inside and enjoy your drink. I think patrons would enjoy this place more if they can sit down and chat with their friends while sipping matcha.
I was craving matcha and I know the SJ location is always busy so I wanted to check it. This is my first time getting Izumi. The place is very modern and new. They have two kiosks to order the drinks. There is no place to sit down. It was a Sunday afternoon so it was kinda busy. We waited about 10-15 mins for our orders. I got the creme brûlée matcha and I thought my drink was good but on the sweeter side. My boyfriend got the lychee matcha and it tasted pretty good. It was mostly lychee flavor with a hint of matcha. I definitely wanna try their Yuzi matcha next time!
Super busy, but they were quite efficient. Friendly service overall. It was easy to order at the kiosk, though we did have to wait in line, which moved fairly quickly. I ordered the creme brûlée matcha, which was more sweet and creamy than matcha forward. I usually prefer drinks that are less sweet with a stronger tea flavor. I wish there was an option to adjust the sweetness, as I think that would make a big difference. Perhaps one of their matcha lattes or other matcha drinks would have a stronger tea taste. I think it is still worth trying if you enjoy sweeter drinks or are looking for more dessert style flavors. I would not recommend the creme brûlée matcha if you are hoping for a strong matcha taste. I guess you could say this place was not quite my cup of tea haha, but it is still worth checking out for yourself.
My favorite place to get matcha!!! So happy they opened a new location in San Mateo because my husband and I used to drive all the way to Cupertino (40mins+ each way) at least once or twice a month to go to Izumi! The Cupertino location is always packed too! Since the San Mateo location opened, we've probably been here more than five times already! Our favorite go-to drink is the creme brûlée matcha tornado! Before trying this, I was getting the strawberry matcha, regular matcha with an extra free shot, matcha latte with an extra shot, honey matcha latte, and pretty much trying the different options on the menu. One of my coworkers actually recommended I try the creme brûlée matcha tornado. Since then, it has been my go-to drink for over a year now. My husband is not big on sweet drinks but he loves that one too! The creme brûlée matcha tornado is delicious! It is like a frozen smoothie with a silky creme brûlée custard texture with a slight bitter notes of Japanese green tea. It is well-balanced, and not too sweet either! Unfortunately, it is not a drink that can last long. It cannot be out for more than 15minutes without melting or put in the freezer as it changes the texture making it just a frozen drink. Personally, the Cupertino location still tastes better because the matcha in the creme brûlée matcha tornado is stronger. This one tastes more milky but still good! The store is located at a corner with lots of metered parking in downtown San Mateo. It has a chill vibe with background music, nice interior, matcha tin boxes on display, but not a place to sit in (just like the Cupertino location). Customers order through their kiosk machines and the workers will call out your names when your order is ready. When the line is not long, drinks will be ready within minutes. We recently came back from Japan a few months ago and honestly thought Izumi's matcha was better than most of the famous matcha places we went to in Tokyo and Kyoto. Even the newest 'best rated' Tokyo matcha spot that opened less than a year ago in Shibuya were tied with Izumi in my opinion. In fact, the matcha latte there tasted like Izumi's creme brûlée matcha tornado without being frozen. That is how good this place is. Overall, so happy my favorite matcha spot opened very close to home! We will be back regularly and will not need to drive so far for Izumi. I have already recommended family and friends to come here to ensure they thrive in their business! Note: Each creme brûlée matcha cost $8.75 but so worth it! read more

There was a 5 minute wait during the Memorial Weekend on a Monday evening around 6pm. They have two self serve kiosks to order from at the corner of the restaurant. People tend to wait along the wall so be mindful that the line may not be as long as it looks. We ordered the creme brulee matcha swirl. I don't believe there was any option to customize sweetness. As for the drink itself, it was noticeably bitter and grassy from the matcha but paired well with the sweetness and creaminess of the creme brulee. There are chunks of creme brulee in nearly every sip. Really tasty and it's a pretty hefty drink - good to share between two. It's definitely on the thicker side when you drink it at first, but I did enjoy it a bit more once it was more melted. Due to the heaviness, I'd recommend this as an after meal treat instead of something I'd get in between meals. read more

Matcha is everywhere now, and I do mean every-where! So this is another matcha place, close to work so my coworkers come here often. Their fresh dragonfruit juice is also good, I get that too sometimes. Surprisingly fast, and the match here is not watery and is good quality. read more

Found my new go to matcha spot! I don't typically like strawberry matcha, yet I've heard great things about the one here, so I had to try it. I ordered the Strawberry Matcha with oat milk, half sweet, and it was delicious! The strawberry wasn't too overpowering, which made it a perfect blend with the matcha. The matcha wasn't too milky, and you could really taste the matcha! I do wish they had an almond or soy milk option, though. Regardless, solid matcha for $8. read more

I really enjoyed my matcha here! I ordered the creme brulee matcha which comes in a cool swirling pattern. I thought the creme brulee would be too sweet, but it actually complemented the bitterness of the matcha nicely. The one quip I had about this was that it was a little bit on the icy side. Otherwise, the line moves fast here despite it being crowded, and the matcha flavor was great! There's not much ambiance as it feels like an empty glass box, but I'm sure they're still settling in. Overall a great spot to try a new type of matcha drink! read more

I was a little skeptical because I usually stick with my regular matcha latte with oat milk, but I'm glad I tried something different. The drink was rich, thick, and very flavorful with just the right touch of sweetness. I shared it with my son, and even my husband, who normally doesn't like matcha, tried it and said he thought it was pretty good. I'd honestly compare it to an ice cream because of how creamy and indulgent it was. I'd definitely visit again if I'm in the area. They also sell tins of matcha powder if you're interested in making your own at home. Street parking is available, and there's also a parking structure nearby. The drink was a bit pricey at almost $9, but I understand that it reflects the quality of matcha they use. Went during their soft opening There was a line to order at the kiosk. But once you order, the drinks come out pretty quickly as they have a good system step up! I actually like this location more than the south bay ones now for my creme brulee matcha as nothing as clumpy and my matcha was strong and creamy! Ratios were perfect. Their strawberry matcha latte was very good as well! The strawberry mixed in perfectly. My bf tried the yuzu strawberry matcha and it tasted exactly like what is described, however, I will stick to my regular order instead. It was good/refreshing to him though. Soft opening? We just passed by and noticed a bunch of people inside. There's no menu up yet but their official sign has been installed. There are two kiosks to order right now and the menu looks similar to the one in Cupertino but they don't have the Hojicha or Sesame variants just yet. I ordered the honey matcha latte with a double shot of matcha (no extra charge right now!). The drink was certainly matcha forward but there were some very fine grains that I could taste. I also wished it was a tad more creamy, it felt a little watery for a latte. Boyfriend got the yuzu matcha and the yuzu definitely masked the matcha almost completely but the drink was pretty refreshing! Also tried my friend's matcha soft serve and the matcha flavor was smooth and the soft serve was creamy. Drinks are about $8 so it's a little more pricy than other tea drinks in San Mateo but if you're looking for matcha specifically, then I think Izumi will win out. read more
I'm so glad Izumi Matcha opened a new location in San Mateo, it's much closer to me now, which makes my matcha runs way more convenient! We ordered the crème brûlée matcha and the cheese mousse matcha tea. The crème brûlée tasted exactly how I remember from the first time I tried it. It was smooth, rich, and absolutely delicious. The cheese mousse matcha tea, however, didn't have much of that distinct cheese mousse flavor I was hoping for, so I was a little bummed about that. The interior is very open and clean, giving it a modern and minimal feel. Since ordering is done on iPads, we didn't get much of a service experience, but everything was efficient and easy. Overall, still a solid spot for matcha, especially if you're a fan of their crème brûlée! read more

I was so happy to hear that an Izumi Matcha opened a location near my work! I got the Creme Brulee Swirl, which is my typical order at the San Jose store, and it was just as good as I remember it. But it's pretty sweet (you can't adjust the sweetness level) and heavy on the stomach so I would recommend either coming with an empty stomach or sharing with somebody LOL. Since it was a soft opening, there's no menu up yet and is just a counter and 2 tablets to place your order. After ordering, I got my drink within a few minutes so A+ for service. I'm excited to add this to my list of places to go for my weekly match runs! read more
Can't believe I don't have to go to Cupertino anymore! I was super excited they're in San Mateo, my neck of the hood. I love the Brûlée Matcha. You do have to really mix them well before drinking. Since they're just opening, the inside didn't really have anything yet. But it is clean. They have two kiosks to order from. Usually a line during the weekend but definitely worth the wait. read more

I was so excited to see that Izumi is opened even though they're still in soft opening. The green color in the matcha was very promising but maybe went on a bad day because it was way too sweet for me where the sweetener masked the taste of the actual matcha. I was quite disappointed that maybe they also don't really hand whisk per order since my latte came out wi the in minutes of ordering which caught me by surprised. read more
I had the experience of stopping here during the pre-open and once everything was fully operational. I appreciate that this place is the dedicated matcha spot in Downtown San Mateo. Service is relatively fast. You order from a kiosk, and the team prepares your drink. I think one thing that sets this place apart from other match spots is the design inside the cup. The team spends time creating a custom swirl inside the cup before the drink is poured and it enhances the aesthetic of the drink. I ordered the Yuzu Matcha and it was good. I wasn't blown away but it was good enough to make me want to come back and try another drink. Many of the drinks I wanted to try were sold out. Maybe they are still working out some of the drinks since it is new. Overall, I would return. read more
The newest Izumi matcha store has opened in downtown San Mateo. Although it's not a particularly large store, it is a comfortable size. The high ceiling gives it an airy feel, but it can get a bit noisy with people talking. While there is no seating available, you can stand inside to enjoy your drink. This location features two touch screens for ordering, compared to just one at the Cupertino store. A notable advantage of this new store is the significantly shorter waiting time. I ordered a Strawberry Matcha Double Shot, and it was prepared quickly. The taste was just as good as at the Cupertino location, not overly sweet and quite satisfying. Now, I don't have to drive far to enjoy my favorite matcha. read more

Ordering is through a kiosk. Ordered the crème brûlée matcha with cheese foam. There was no option to change sweetness level or size, so be prepared to feel like you're drinking a dessert. It is very sweet. I usually order 50% sweetness and this felt like 200%. The matcha flavor is strong. It's thick and sweet, like drinking an ice cream through a straw (it's thicker than a milkshake) I think if this is your first time coming, go with a traditional matcha to appreciate the flavors. read more

Yesss! It's finally here and open! Whenever I'm in Cupertino, it's obligatory I make a stop at Izumi. They serve excellent, high quality matcha drinks and ice cream. And now, they're even closer. The setup is very efficient, you queue up in line and order at one of the two kiosks and your drink will be ready in 5 mins. The staff has the entire process down and very precise. I came a few times already and never waited for more than 5 mins for my order. The wait to order varies, anywhere from 10-20 mins. Really excited SM has a matcha spot now :) read more
This has to be the best tasting matcha latte I've had in the states. I would absolutely come back. They were quick and efficient with making drinks too. You do order at a kiosk which has its downsides but they had enough workers that we were able to ask questions. They recommended some matcha powder to make lattes at home which was also delicious. The inside is pretty sterile but there's a lot of space and it feels clean. Overall, def coming here for my matcha fix. read more

Ok hear me out, if you like strong matcha and not so sweet flavor, get the double shot matcha. It is FREE. My double shot matcha strawberry latte is probably the best matcha I ever had 10/10. You can't change the sweetness of the drink though, but I still think about the flavor today. The sweetness of the strawberry puree perfectly balances with the bitterness of double shot matcha. read more

This is the best Izumi Matcha location in the Bay. Huge plus for having TWO kiosks! The other locations need to learn from this new one! There was a line but the wait wasn't too bad. We waited about 15 minutes from the time we stepped in until our drinks were ready. And the drinks came out quickly! The only downside is parking but we were fortunate to have found parking right in front. We thoroughly enjoyed our drinks: matcha crème brûlée and matcha with salted foam. read more
I have been to the Cupertino location a couple of times and am happy they opened one in San Mateo! They aren't "officially" open but open for business. Matcha latte - so smooth and has a nice level of sweetness. It is not overpowering. They sweeten it with honey. I usually like to add cream cheese foam as a topper. Brûlée Matcha - one of their popular drinks! This is more of a "slush" texture. Very creamy and nice sweetness. It reminds me a matcha custard swirl! The line here isn't as long as the Cupertino location and the drinks came out quick after I ordered. I would definitely recommend this if you're looking for quality matcha drink. This is not your typical "ceremonial" matcha. They use Marukyu Koyamarn and also sell them at market price. read more
My favorite matcha place and I am so happy they're in San Mateo now! I've been here 3-4 times now and only when they first open was it a long line, the other times it was decent or even no line. Their matcha is so smooth, I love their creme brulee for a sweet treat, their honey matcha latte is my go to. We recently tried their lychee matcha and strawberry yuzu matcha and both were so refreshing and so much lighter than milk versions! The strawberry bits were delicious and did not taste artifical. I usually only do matcha lattes, but trying these might have changed my opinion! I will definitely get these when it's hot and I want something more light. read more

It can get really busy at times. It's been open for a few months but still looks new. There's no tables or seats inside. They can definitely fit a few sit-down tables or standing table. It looks empty so I hope they decorate it and fill it soon. read more
