Professionalism is the biggest issue at this location, please let me explain.
An employee showed up to work with a visible half dollar sized hickey on his neck a couple weeks ago, which struck me as unprofessional. So I pointed it out to them while receiving my order. He responded that they was aware of the hickey and tried to hide it prior to work, which didn't work very well hence it being completely in eye sight because this barista is on the taller side height wise.
However, not thinking too much of it I continued frequenting this particular store for weeks, never making much talk with anyone for the most part. My main purpose for coming is to attend a college course I have online and enjoy a nice beverage.
One day last week, I ended up making the frightful mistake of following up with the employee on making sure to look professional while at work meaning covering or hiding any marks or hickeys from fellow coworkers and other paying customers if possible. As your appearance means so much and speaks volumes to the level of professionalism a business upholds. Well apparently the manager begged to differ. I did not get her name as she was too busy loudly accusing me of sexual harassment for inquiring about her employee showing up with a hickey in front of other patrons and then so rudely kicked me out of the store.
Initially I was taken aback by her approach, she walked away without giving me a name or title. When I went to get a refund for my order the other poor barista's were clearly shaken up by the interaction that they struggled to compose their nerves enough to refund me without stumbling about. I even asked the fine young lady that was refunding me if she knew the managers name that had the black sweater on but she happened to not know it unfortunately.
As I left the store property I began to realize that the level of professionalism the manager showed is almost coincidental to the level of professionalism she allows in her store from her employees. No longer was I taken aback or surprised. I became more concerned for other patrons that may face the same type of treatment and behavior so unfairly.
I reached out to corporate about my experience shortly after. A fine young man by the name of Ethan handled my case beautifully and even gifted me $15 in starbucks store credit, which I unfortunately will not be using. I do strongly believe further training on professional standards and addressing customer or employee communication skills would do tremendous things for the team. Especially the store manager as it starts from the top down being in a leadership position. I love the desire to back up your employees but there is a correct manner to handle every situation and training can help tap into that truly important skill.
I understand where I may have crossed the line. Never was my intent to offend or "harass" anyone especially sexually in nature. I also believe both the employee and manager knew this also. However, regardless of the complaint, the way this was handled was humiliating and disrespectful. As a manager, allowing employees to appear unprofessional and then taking it out on a paying customer is unacceptable. I will not spend another dollar with this particular store nor recommend them. On the verge of cutting out Starbucks altogether due to this experience.
A couple things worth noting.
The manager made a mention of her employees being uncomfortable if you watch them work. I just find that very curious, as someone who worked in the food industry in my younger days, you almost expect to be watched while you work as you're dealing with food and drinks. If you aren't doing anything wrong, I don't understand the problem with someone keeping an eye on their and others orders for the sake of safety. But take that tidbit as you like please.
