I normally try to give places the benefit of the doubt, but our experience at The Bees Knees Bistro in Wallingford was honestly very disappointing and upsetting. My family and I arrived while it was raining outside with our young daughters in strollers, expecting to sit down for a meal and get out of the weather. Instead, we were told we could not come in with the strollers and essentially felt unwelcome the moment we walked through the door. As parents of babies who are still too young to sit safely in high chairs on their own, the strollers are not optional for us , they are necessary. We were not being disruptive, rude, or inconsiderate. We were simply trying to have a meal as a family. Rather than attempting to accommodate us or show any understanding, we were left feeling like having children made us an inconvenience. What made the situation even worse was the fact that it was pouring outside. Any level of kindness or flexibility would have gone a long way. Instead, we felt embarrassed, frustrated, and honestly shocked by the lack of compassion and customer service. Families with young children already face enough challenges going out in public, and experiences like this make it even harder. We ended up leaving and taking our business somewhere else that was far more welcoming and understanding toward families. It is disappointing because we were genuinely looking forward to trying this restaurant, but first impressions matter. A restaurant does not need to be "kid-centered" to still treat parents and babies with basic respect and decency. I completely understand that restaurants may have space limitations or policies, but there is a respectful and compassionate way to handle situations like this. Instead, the experience came across as cold and dismissive. There are many restaurants in the area that are happy to accommodate families, and moving forward those are the businesses I will continue to support. Unfortunately, after this experience, I will not be returning and would not recommend this restaurant to families with infants or children who still require strollers or extra accommodations. I wont be going back and giving them .you business, nor will I be recommending this place to anyone. Totally rude and discrimination towards those with babies. I did not feel cherished like their website says every guest is. Its sad because this will and im sure does effect their business. I will never give them my business after yesterday. Cute little breakfast & lunch destination on a busy street. Had circle around to find a parking spot....street parking. Was greeted by a very friendly server right on entry. Very busy lot of delicious plates of food being served. I went with a Blueberry Chai, Iced - Chai topped with a blueberry cold foam. To eat I chose the Candied Club it came on toasted sourdough with candied bacon, havarti cheese from Wisconsin, LTO & topped with a garlic tomato spread. It was delicious and stacked it came with a pasta salad- ditalini pasta and chopped veggies. I also grabbed my husband the Chop Shop Burger- house made veggie burger with crispy fried onions, pickled jalapenos, LTO& avocado mango sauce on a grilled brioche roll he said it was really good and filling. The Bees Knees is my go to pick for my favorite breakfast spot in the area. I have been numerous times, and my recent visit only further amplified my love for them. It is a bright and welcoming space, and they even offer some outdoor seating, though I have never taken advantage of it myself. They have delicious specialty drinks and coffees, and a tremendous menu with both creative dishes and breakfast staples. The salted maple latte, herbivore breakfast sandwiches and their pancakes are highlights for me. But my favorite part about visiting them, and what usually dictates when I go, is their chef's brilliant specials. He is a true rockstar in that kitchen. My last visit was for their corn fritter cakes, savory pancakes loaded with local corn, and also consisting of mascarpone and scallions. They were delicious. Great texture on the outside of the cakes, not overly soft but not the slightest bit dry, covered in a salted honey glaze. It was an excellent dish. My friend had the "catch a redeye" which is their take on the breakfast platter with a bit of everything. Two pancakes, two eggs, bacon and a hash brown. He loved it and was particularly impressed with the crispness of the hash brown and bacon, both consistent with past visits. The coffees were also excellent, with his favorite "beachy bee", a coconut iced latte, satisfying yet again. I tried the iced snickerdoodle latte for the first time and was very happy I did. Excellent food, service, and a cute spot to boot! I've been waiting to try this restaurant for some time and finally my husband and I had the opportunity to do so. The restaurant is on the smaller size, and it seems to stay busy at all times. We went at around 1pm on a Sunday and there were a few tables open. I was excited to try one of their specialty coffees and boy was it worth it! I ordered an iced italian rainbow cookie coffee, which was out of this world good! For our meals, my husband ordered the short stack of pancakes with a side of bacon, while I got the catch a red eye with waffles. Please note, Sunday's only breakfast is served. Bee Knees holds a special place in my heart! This Women owned business is more than just a breakfast/lunch spot on Center street - it's a place for community, comfort, and to share an amazing meal. The carpenter bee sandwich is always my go to, the beef is tender and juicy, they pile on a ton of cheese, the aioli is flavorful, and the bread hits the spot every time. they have a phenomenal pasta salad and caesar salad, and you can't go wrong with any of their menu items. My fiancé got the cappuccino which was made just to his liking, and he's a coffee connoisseur. For food, I had the Bumble, which I highly recommend, with scrambled eggs, subbed with the gluten free sourdough bread (+$2 up-charge) and cheddar instead of American cheese. It's served all day and had so much flavor with that garlic butter, and the seasoned steak. Yum! If you are gluten free like me, you will appreciate that they have the gluten free sourdough bread or a gluten free wrap to substitute with. Didn't have time to sit down, but wanted to run in and try some of the goodies at bees knees. The space was on the smaller side, but well laid out. It was packed full of breakfast goers on Saturday morning. We left with the salted caramel cheesecake, latte, and the apple chaider (topped off with a cookie). Food is nothing special. Hash browns can be found in the frozen aisle at any grocery store, they just deep fried them and burnt them and they're super greasy. Eggs were cold. Waffles were cold. Syrup they provide is super runny. Chocolate croissant was literally missing chocolate but was a special. Fried chicken was overcooked and burnt, resulting in VERY dry chicken to the point it was inedible and the entire meal with cold eggs had to be sent back. However, they did put gold on the fried chicken to possibly distract us at how awfully overcooked and under seasoned they were. Haha! We could've made a better breakfast at home but my friends and I wanted to try a cute spot this morning. Latte was lukewarm and mediocre. Our server was Faith. I always find that the server is a huge part of a diner's experience. She lacked enthusiasm and positivity. She rarely checked in on us and seemed like she was avoiding us. Honestly, her attitude put a damper on our experience and set the worse tone for our day. She didn't even bring out our food because another server had to and it was chaotic. That's probably a huge reason why the food was cold. Debbie Downer decided to include a 20% gratuity on our check, probably because one person sent her food back. Funny thing is, one of my friends had been here over the summer and gratuity wasn't included but they "reserve the right to add 20% gratuity " per their menu in tiny font. We are NOT people who would not tip. Even my friend that sent her food back and didn't eat pulled cash out to tip her. The ambiance is very quaint and cute with bee decor. You visit a breakfast and lunch restaurant that's been on your Try List, and you're seated five minutes before they switch from the Breakfast to Lunch Menu. Do you make a snap breakfast order? Or do you wait for the lunch menu? What do you do? I was unnecessarily anxious about that decision because it seemed like the Bees Knees Crew would have hooked me up either way. But I decided on the Carpenter Bee sandwich. Lean, tender shaved steak. Sharp melted American. Grilled peppers and onions. Tomato Jam. Garlic aioli. All on a fresh artisan ciabatta roll. The Carpenter Bee was a tasty high end sandwich. If anything, it could have used a bit more beef fat for flavor. I really respected the side pasta salad. Had its own vibe. It was made with short, thick pasta tubes. Creamy sort of mayo sauce. Small pieces of veggies. This pasta salad was a couple steps up from the norm, and I appreciated the attention to the details. I also ordered cold brew topped with a house Strawberry Cold Foam. It was terrific. It arrived in a fun glass shaped like stacked inter tubes And the strawberry cold foam was thick, delicious and luscious. The bistro was low key cute. It should be noted, my first and only experience was a Sunday morning. First, didn't feel like there was any structure with seating and there was a lack of a host of some nature. Second, I have tried numerous coffee shops across New Haven and Fairfield County and I wasn't impressed. Third, never had any follow up about more coffee or water refill. The one star, however, is not solely for the service or the food--which would have earned a better rating--but for the small, fine print stating that the restaurant "reserves the right to add a 20% gratuity." This is the first time I've encountered this in Connecticut. In my view, great service should be a given in any hospitality business, and when service exceeds expectations, a tip is warranted--but the amount should be left to the discretion of the patrons. I wanted to have a latte and breakfast entree here, but quickly realized this place was not going to be it for me. I waited by the register for over 15 minutes to even be acknowledged. Then when I was finally spoken to was told, "we are done serving breakfast so you will have to get something to go." I learned that this business has only been open for 7 months and wow they are busy! They don't take reservations however they do notate names for tables for the day. Call ahead is an option so definitely do that if coming at 9a or later. Since we can't make reservations, and we didn't know we can call ahead, we were told it would be a 30-min wait. We did wait a little more due to the tables not clearing out too quickly. Unfortunate for us, I can't fault the business though if people don't want to leave. Luckily there was an awning outside so we were shielded from the rain or sun if it was too hot. It might be good to have a text service if in case the wait is longer and people want to walk around the area while they wait? My friends and I stayed outside and passed the time quickly by chatting away and catching up. We also browsed the menu so that we knew what to order when we were sat. Sadly breakfast ended when we got seated which wasn't all too bad. The lunch menu had plenty to be desired and wow was I blown away by the falafel! The tatziki sauce was oh so delicious. Everything was delicious. I got to taste a bite of the Prosciutto Di Peach-a and that was delectable too! The sweetness of the peach was perfect. It wasn't too ripe either that it was mushed at first bite. Yum! The matcha latte lacked sweetness so if that's not your thing, add flavored foam or some other syrup. I was fine with it as is. The dressing for the Cobb salad also enhanced the flavors of the greens, cheese egg and bacon. I really love that the egg was not overdone and had more texture and definitely not dry. Can I give this place 100/10?!! Our server Michelle was truly lovely and Jen, one of the owners was so sweet! I loved that she was so down to earth and talked to us, checked in on us and most especially co-establishing this business for me/us to enjoy! Finally had the pleasure to eat in at the Bees Knees Bistro in Wallingford. Located on Center Street, this little breakfast and lunch eatery has drummed up a lot of hype from the locals and foodies who come far and wide. They are always busy [bees]. Offering up delicious coffee, baked goodies, breakfast platters, toasts, salads, and sandwiches, everything is made fresh, using locally sourced ingredients. Their menu is small, but mighty and they have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available. Definitely check out their seasonal specials menu too. Make note that they serve and change from breakfast and lunch at different times compared to weekdays and Saturday. Breakfast is served all day on Sundays. They close at 2:30pm. Check out their website or social pages for the latest updates. My husband and I visited on a Sunday for breakfast. Once they opened at 8am, tables were filling up fast. Luckily, we got a table. Our server was very friendly and they had a lot of staff to help with the morning rush. I started with an Iced Honey Lavender Latte with oat milk. My latte was delicious and had a strong lavender flavor--lavender coffee is one of my go-to's. For food, I ordered the Cardamom Creme Brulee Toast. It was presented beautifully. It was two slices of lightly toasted sourdough with a generous amount of mashed raspberries, topped with a sweet pastry creme brulee, and finished with lemon thyme. So delicious, the flavors married together so well and the raspberries were perfectly sweet. There were a few pieces of honeycomb which was a nice touch and on theme! My husband ordered the Catch A Redeye. It was a breakfast platter with two eggs (he opted them to be scrambled), choice of pancakes or waffles, choice of bacon or sausage, and a hashbrown. He chose the waffles which I was surprised were shaped like honeycomb, so cute! The cafe does is very cramped when all the tables are occupied. I'm happy to see the Bees Knees Bistro is doing so well--I can see them outgrowing their little cafe space in the future. I did learn a while ago that you can stop in for a coffee and a baked treat to-go which I've taken advantage. Went here for brunch with friends and it was really cute. The wait was 30-40 minutes, so give yourself some time. There's also no room to wait inside, so dress warmly! They have great coffee! The salted maple latte was delicious. My husband got the chicken and waffles and while he liked it, it did not fill him up. The portion size is tiny! I wish they made it more worthwhile. We got the Love You Lox for our son and he ate it all up. Perfect for a toddler. As for me, I got the Herbivore, and it had a great balance of flavors. Felt wholesome and fresh. What a cute bistro! First, not very large place very quaint, we had a party of 6 and there's only one table that could fit us. We needed to wait about 20 minutes. The size was perfect for our crowd. If you happen to go on a warm day there is outside seating also. The wait staff was great so pleasant. Once seated we ordered beverages they did offer Mimosas which were yummy. The food is prepared to order you can definitely tell by the freshness. The Cobb salad was made fresh and not a small portion. The smash burger (no bun) was so good not dry and perfect on the side salad! We had the shaved steak sandwich, the stinger and build your own also. All great choices and no togo bags! I went with the Red Catcheye which is a platter that comes with eggs, waffles, bacon, and hasbrown. You can choose which kind of protein you want and choice either pancakes or waffles. When my food arrived it was already a no go. My eggs were cold and the platter looked so small. I imagined a good filling plate but it wasn't. The waitress kept walking by the table and not checking in to make sure everything was ok. I knew my experience wasn't going to be decent. My friend ordered chicken and waffles and it was also a no! The chicken looked dry and burnt. I felt like the ordered was place, food was made and left in a hot oven to keep warm. It was my first time dinning in. I also ordered a chocolate crossiant with hardly any chocolate so I did not finish it. The flavor gave a harsh dark chocolate taste instead of a sweet light milk chocolate. It took a longgg time to get our food and our pancakes didn't have blueberries like we ordered but opted to just have the waitress bring a side of them rather than having to wait for new ones. From the second I walked inside, I totally adored this place! It is beautiful both inside and out with a friendly, local vibe. I had a late lunch here, and it was still pretty busy but I was seated right away. My server was kind, attentive and provided suggestions when I wasn't sure what I wanted. The salted maple latte was incredible - not too sweet and the perfect temperature. The fries are fantastic as well! I loved the dressing on the A Trip To Greece salad. Cute little coffee stop! Inside and outside seating available. The place is a little tiny but it adds to its charm. The food was great but the stars are really for the lattes. They are to die for. I had a salted maple latte and I almost ordered another one on my way out. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Definitely worth the stop! read more

This place is an absolute gem here in Wallingford. The smash burger is incredible. It's probably one of the best restaurant hamburgers in the entire area. I say this having eaten at over three dozen burger joints throughout the state, and hands down the soft pillow brioche bun, the combination of melted cheeses, a properly seasoned and cooked beef patty, fresh vegetables, meltingly-good onions, and the options for an egg, avocado, and bacon make this a serious contender. There's no dry, falling-apart burger here, it's just exceptional. The fries are decent. The prosciutto and peach panini is one of those very unique takes on a summer entree, and I have to say it works very well. It's refreshing to see a restaurant like this take a chance on things that are new and different and the outcome speaks for itself. The pasta salad is a nice alternative to the fries. The restaurant itself is not that large even with both the indoor and patio areas , so prepare to wait if you come here at a busy hour. The servers are absolutely friendly and wonderful. The only caveat is that "good food takes time" so if you're in a hurry, do not come here and expect that your food is going to pop out within 5-10 minutes like an Applebees or Marie Callenders. They certainly aren't microwaving their entrees here! read more
