Super charming little vineyard that's located near the beginning of Apple Hill! Decided to do a little wine tasting during my recent trip to Apple land, and Fenton Herriot was such a fun stop. I loved how low key and relaxing this vineyard was. As soon as I walked onto the property, I knew that I would enjoy myself. I made a reservation ahead of time, but it wasn't too busy on a late Saturday afternoon. They actually accept walk-ins but seating is limited. The estate is so adorable! They've got lots of picnic tables that are spread out even more than the required 6 feet of distance. A few of them are in the sun, and they also have a section where you can taste underneath their beautiful gazebo while overlooking their vineyards. Service was excellent! Cindy was manning the fort by herself for the majority of the time, but she did an awesome job! She was super knowledgeable and made sure to check in on me several times while I was there. They also have a few bocce ball courts on the property and they are dog friendly. I witnessed them sanitizing and cleaning in between guests, so they are definitely COVID-friendly as well. The way that they do it during COVID is flight style. You choose five wines to taste off of their tasting menu, and they bring you a small paddle board with pre-poured wines and your wine glass. A tasting flight is $7 which is waived with a bottle purchase. The price per bottle is extremely reasonable here. Aah, the joys of tasting outside of the expensive Napa and Sonoma valleys. They also serve light bites here if you get hungry which is a plus, but you can also bring your own food in. If I'm being truthful, I generally don't care too much for the wine and/or the wineries out here on Apple Hill. Besides the Barbera, it's been hard to find a good wine out in this valley that I actually like. BUT, Fenton Herriot's wine was actually very tasty! I ended up taking a bottle of their Jane Way white blend home. I was super happy to find a few wines that I enjoyed tasting. Here a few of my wine notes for my fellow winos who are looking to taste here: *Jane Way white blend: My favorite of everything that I tried and apparently a hot seller! This was a mix of Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer. Super fruity, sweet, and lightly acidic. Very drinkable and super refreshing on a warm day. Loved this wine and have already finished the bottle since my visit. *Sangiovese Rosé - A beautiful hue with a fragrantly fruity smell! A bit heavy for a Rosé and very floral. I enjoy floral wines but this was a bit more floral than fruity for my taste. The white blend was more my style, but this was still decent. *Sangiovese - A true Sangiovese with lots of dark flavors like chocolate and cherry. Some spice but very tannic on the finish. It does linger but not the best if you're not into the tannins. *Socially distant lot 1 - Super fruity with lots of flavor. A great everyday red. Definitely a table style wine that would pair with lots of different foods. *Jake Way - A beautiful blend of Sangio, Syrah, and Tempranillo. Super smooth and silky finish, well balanced. My favorite red of the bunch that I tried. Very drinkable. *Gewurtztraminer - This was actually a bonus pour that Cindy graciously poured for me after I expressed some interest in trying it. I love Gewurtz, but this one was just too acidic for me. Not as soft and crisp as I'm used to. Wasn't my favorite, but it as worth a try. All in all, I really enjoyed my time here. The views are beautiful, the service is wonderful, the wine is good, and the atmosphere is super relaxing. Definitely one of the better wineries that I've visited while on Apple Hill. Would love to visit again sometime. read more

The staff were very awkward, rude, and unprofessional towards my friends and I even though we were there for a birthday and had called ahead in advance to let them know. We were hurriedly ushered to the BYO (Bottle Your Own) wine experience, which was fun on its own, and the staff member in charge of BYO was surprised we hadn't had a chance to taste the wine yet. Once we went back to the tasting room, we decided to give it a go since 2 wine tasting fees were waived with the purchase of a bottle. Another staff member led the tastings but was very blunt and didn't explain any of the wines to us. Instead, she aggressively asked which wine we were at so as to hurry up our tasting. This was strange because she seemed very hassled when pouring wine for us but took her sweet time joking around and talking to the other customers who were white unlike us. In summary, the wine wasn't very good and if you're not white, I would be wary about going here for a wine tasting. read more

The wines were just OK. The staff in the tasting room were friendly and knowledgeable. The real problem was the the cost. We did 3 tastings. We then bought a $28 bottle of wine, expecting a credit against one of the tasting fees. Nope! After tax and tip we were out $90!! Our first time to Fenton Herriot Vineyards and overall a pretty good experience. They operate on a first come first served basis which is different than other places that take reservations. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon around 1230 pm, there was ample outdoor seating with plenty of sunshine and a great view. Tastings are $7 for 5 selections which you can choose from whites and reds. My wife and I selected the same combination to try 1 white, 1 rose and 3 reds. Our favorite was the sav Blanc followed by the reserve cab. I wasn't a huge fan of the barbera, rose or zin as they were pretty fruit forward but everyone has a different palette. If you are looking for a peaceful, enjoyable experience I would give them a try. Cheers. read more

We visited Fenton Herriott Vineyards where they were having their "Bottle Your Own" event. It was $12 per pottle and $120 per case. This was our first time visiting Fenton Herriott Vineyards and it was well worth the drive. There's something about vineyards and their breathtaking views. They had a beautiful gazebo that overlooked their vineyard. It also helped that the sun was setting giving that orange tint in the sky. When we inquired about the event, one of their staff gave us a tasting of their red blend specifically crafted for this event. After paying, she gave us a receipt and told us where we needed to go to bottle our wine. We headed down the hill from the parking lot to their cellar which took less than five minutes. There, a young man (I didn't catch his name) gave us the step by step process of what we needed to do. First, we grabbed our bottle, which was totally naked (no label). We filled our bottle with the wine and corked it through an automated machine. After that, we neatly labeled our bottle, placed the seal on top of the cork, and put the bottle through another machine that finally tightened the seal. And Voila! The whole process took less than ten minutes! As short as it was, we each had a fun experience. Once we were all finished, we headed back up and enjoyed the sunset before heading back home. From gorgeous views to their wonderful staff, Fenton Herriott Vineyards was easily one of my favorite vineyards we've visited so far. Knowing nothing about how to bottle our own wines, their staff made us feel both welcomed and reassured of ourselves. For just $12, we got a bottle of wine and an unforgettable experience. My roommates and I will be keeping close watch for future and upcoming events. If you're in the area, we definitely recommend visiting this vineyard out. read more

I had read some great reviews about Fenton Herriott so I made a special trip to their El Dorado County tasting room so as to check out their selection of international varietals with selections representing wines with a history of Bordeaux, Rhone valley and Italy. The tasting room is small though adequate enough for 3-5 couples at the counter and tastings are $10 which is credited if you purchase a bottle. The server was friendly, helpful and had been well schooled in their product. The exterior has some delightful areas to sit and sip as well as enjoy the scenery of the vine covered hills. Unfortunately, I came on at opening time on a Thursday. I hoped by coming then I could have more time to savor and enjoy their product but what I found were mostly wines that had been opened since the previous weekend, 5 days past. Usually wineries will date a bottle when it's opened so they no when to take it away from the tasting counter. I have rarely found a tasting room serving wine more than 3 days past. Most of the bottles had no more than a few ounces of wine left in them and only 3/9 (1 white, 8 red) were from newly opened bottles. (take off 1 star) The pours represent some of the smallest pours I have ever experienced. The server was offering anything I wanted to try but then poured no more than 1/2 ounce (15ml) samples. To be clear, I'm not asking for a 1/2 glass but I would much rather be limited to 4-6 and have 2 oz. (take off second star) The aromas of fruit was muted and faint but I was able to frequently discern chocolate and vanilla. Primary flavors were in line with what I expected from the specific varietals but not with only a light to moderate intensity. ABV and tannins were high in all the samples which unbalanced the wines against the fruit flavors (except the R. Frienz) and the finish was usually only short to medium. (take off 3rd star) I'm looking forward to trying their Old Sacramento tasting room as perhaps they go through more wine and therefore, newly opened bottles. read more

We had such a great time here even while sitting outside in the slightly smoky air. Beautiful grounds with lots of seating. The table was in the shade and there was a nice cooling breeze. We were assisted by Cindy and she was so helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. We really enjoyed the charcuterie box. The French green olives and Brie cheese were especially delicious. The wine flight tasting isn't set, the customer gets to choose 5 from about 15 or so wines, white and red. I loved the Jane Way. This was a great winery and I'd definitely visit again. read more

Fenton Herriott is our favourite winery in Apple Hill and we've been wine club members for many years. Debbie is one of the main reasons that we have participated in events and made a point to stop into the tasting room when we are in the area. The wines are always high quality, refreshing, current, and suitable for personal drinking as well as gifting. We've introduced many friends to FH through gifting wine. Events at the winery are also a great time, especially during COVID-19 times. They are creating a safe outdoor atmosphere for guests to enjoy food and beverages in a socially distanced way, right there in the vineyard. Guy (the owner) is so friendly and always makes a point to talk to us when we are there for events, and as mentioned, Debbie is a real treasure and she knows all her wine club members and regular visitors on sight. Apple hill wine region may just be my new favorite place to taste. With most vineyards offering comp tastings, the friendliest staff, sweet wines and that un-Napa feel, it's easy to fall in love--hard and fast. I think I began to fall in love last fall when I visited for apple picking season and discovered the wineries in the process... As I learned on my Yelp field trip to Rock Wall winery in Alameda, there's no such thing as "good wine," its your personal taste. Fenton Herriott quite suited my tastes as their unique almond-y Chardonnay and the almost burbon-y Zin sent my taste buds on a unique trip! I also enjoyed the barbera and both white and red ports. But really five stars to this small, community oriented winery for not only taking us in for a last minute tasting (seriously, four minutes to five and they were waving us to come in) but welcoming boyfriend and I with open arms. There was no rushing through the pours and we got to try everything on the menu. Debbie, our terrific hostess, gave us tips about where to crash and where to munch and even invited us to stay for their weekly bocce ball league! I warned them fair and square I kind of stink at bocce--I learned this in Paris when the old men outside my apartment kept trying to no avail to teach me how to play petanque. Everyone was so fun and just kept it cool. Although, with glass pours and cold bottles, it's hard to not enjoy a friday evening of Bocce ball. In addition, there were some amazing chefs who whipped up some incredible creations for the accompanying potluck feast. Debbie said there were going to be some pick up games on the weekends in the future. I'd definitely consider coming back up for one of the pick up bocce Saturdays! If you make it up to Apple hill or even Sac (hey it's only a 30 minute drive!) I'd put Fenton Herriott on the list to check out. read more

While out cruising Camino for apple orchards in late September, we stumbled across the Fenton Herriott winery with it's new-as-of-last-year tasting room. They make wine in smallish quantities, but the quality of those wines is most impressive! They were pouring two different Sangiovese wines the day we were there. One was the El Dorado with a big flavor, and the Fair Play was softer, lighter, but still had quite rich flavors. They were both wonderful and I couldn't decide which I liked better. So, we got one of each. Their tasting room is friendly and cozy. This really isn't the place for the limousine-driven wine tour. It's a small family place that makes you feel like you've stumbled upon someplace special that everyone else doesn't know about. One word: underrated Fenton herriott offers some of the best wine in the region as a small 'hole in the wall' winery - It's quite worth the detour for this hidden gem. Hospitality was among the best I've received ever (big thanks to Debbie)! Oh and did I mention COMPLEMENTARY TASTING? Their wine wines are gorgeous and impressively refined. Stopped for an impromptu wine tasting and food. Everything was great! They were doing paninis & soup, both of which were great, and priced well for what you get. White wine lovers, try the Jane-Way. Delicious! Sweet/dessert wine lovers, they have a great late harvest gewürztraminer and a dessert Syrah that tastes like chocolate covered cherries! Yum! I'll be back! Visited a few months ago. Excused the awkward service to dealing with pandemic restrictions. But hate to say it, there wine is not that good. Flights came in plastic cups that gave off an oder I thought was like a cleaning product. Group agreed that it smelled like paint. Again, maybe covid rules - if they couldn't use glass, they needed to be much more careful about what plastic they chose. Even so. I bought a bottle of Barbera that I didn't taste, thinking it could be good a real glass at home. Nope. There are delicious wines in this area. But the wines here need work. read more

I don't normally write reviews but after seeing recent reviews about different treatment for folks of different skin color I had to chime in. I come here often with my boyfriend - neither of us are white - and we have never been treated different nor have we seen any of the employees treat anyone differently. I cannot say enough good things about this place!! Not only is their "Janeway" an absolute fave of ours but my now fiancé proposed to me in their beautiful gazebo. The vineyard just held some great memories for us so he decided that's where he would ask me to be his bride. He called ahead and coordinated with the Team at Fenton Herriott to make it so absolutely special! Special shout out to Dominick who took care of so many special details for us, including capturing the moment on video for us without me even knowing it was happening. There was a little hiccup in the video reaching us, due to technology not cooperating but Manager, Margaret and Tasting Room Associate, Dianna came to the rescue and we got the video. Again, I just adore this place and it will always hold such a special place in both my fiancé's and my hearts. We have been wine club members since November 17. Nothing but great things to say about Fenton Herriott. It's a smaller winery, but the quality of wines are unmatched. We have been up at least once a month since we joined. Bryan, Gina, and Debbie are wonderful and very friendly. They have a variety of events too.
