Basically grocery shopped here every single day of our trip. This place is not cheap, but has an excellent selection of fresh and packaged foods. The produce was nice and rotated regularly. The meat/seafood was very well maintained and had a good selection. We bought 5 huge spiney lobster to half and grill-- they were super fresh. The bakery had breads (good) but no pastry to our dismay. The wine selection was decent (not going to be in Wine Spectator) but had an okay range of types and price. Bear in mind that nothing on a small island is going to be inexpensive. read more

Great grocery story with a good selection. Much cheaper than Dolphin Market. The prices on the island are steep in general. Cereal costs $10-12/box, same for oatmeal. But then some things aren't bad like eggs and they do run sales on certain items so look out for those! In general, most locals grocery shop on St. Thomas and bring the groceries back over on the ferry since the price difference is that astounding (a car ferry costs $50, so that tells you something). In that same complex, there is an AMAZING authentic italian gelato place (entrance to starfish complex on the left) and a really great sandwich place the locals even frequent (top floor of the complex). I'd highly recommend both! PS if the parking at the bottom lot is full, just head up to the top lot. read more

Overall great market with shelves mostly stocked. Some great service mixed with some not so friendly service. Prices seemed fair overall. Our deli sandwiches which we packed for lunch one day were $7.95, a deal in today's economy. It was good, but the bread was much too hard for being freshly made. We were staying upstairs at the Marketplace Suites and we just loved the convenience of coming here for all our needs while in town. read more

Very mixed review here. Got turkey roll up for $8 and it was really big, fresh and wonderful tasting. Would get it again. Got BLT chicken tossed salad for $15 and it was quite large, but not great. Generous chicken amount, bacon was ok, lettuce was limp. I ate it for a couple of days but wasn't great, especially for that price. We bought a bunch of food here, eggs, butter, bread, yogurt, everything we would get at home. Eggs were $8, everything was more than double. This market was in the same building we were staying in and was perfect for our breakfast needs. We were able to go downstairs and get food every morning for our kids. We especially liked the deli that had hot food served by the portion. They had eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, all the things! There was also a good selection of alcohol and we stocked up on water from here. The lines were never long and there was a good mix of tourists and locals at the market. They do not accept American Express and there is a bank/ATM right outside the doors. The carts were in good condition and there is plenty of parking. Lastly, the staff was always super nice and helpful in pointing you in the right direction for what you were looking for. read more

The Starfish Market is one of the larger grocery stores on the island. There is adequate parking and a few check out lanes that move smoothly. The employees are friendly. They sell fresh produce and have a meat counter. There is a well stocked isle of alcohol and some soda and other drinks. Rum seems to be the cheapest priced item on the island. The isles are filled with many name brand foods. At first glance the prices are difficult to comprehend but when you put it into prospective you adjust pretty quick. If you are a big family or want to cut your vacation costs it is a wise idea to bring your own staples. It's cheaper to pay for an extra piece of luggage filled with dry goods over shopping here. To give you an example of pricing...a small bag of island coffee was $19.99 ...One box of Cheerios Oat Crunch is $8.49 and a pint of Ben & Jerry's is $8.39. All of the prices are high. read more

Starfish Market was recommended from regulars to Cruz Bay, as well as locals, and it did not disappoint. The location is in the middle of the island and offers everything you need to stock your refrigerator while on the island. Although the layout is a little strange and I couldn't figure out how they organized things, even after a few visits, they definitely offer the staples you need, including everything from fresh vegetables to wine, soda and plenty of snack food. Prices are a little high compared to the states, but I felt that way at even the restaurants. Overall, I would recommend this as your go to Market, especially if you rent a house with a kitchen, and plan to enjoy snacks and dinner at home. read more

Starfish market was a good example of the third rule, and here we go: Location: 4 out of 5 To give you some context, I had a rental car on my most recent visit to the USVI, and took the ferry over from STT. After hitting up some of the beaches in the morning, we were in the mood for something to eat, and for some reason, my fiance is really really really interested in having sushi regardless of where we are. One of the little brochures that we got suggested a sushi place in this plaza, and while you won't stumble across it like you would Mongoose Junction, you can find it by using one of those little cartoon maps they hand out everywhere. Lots of free parking in the plaza lot. Selection of Grocery Items: 4 out of 5 (in tandem with their liquor store) When you combine the fact that Starfish also has a wine and beer boutique right across the walkway, this place is doing it right. No, it's not huge, but walking through the store I saw a good variety of fresh produce (fruits looked awesome!) and different cuts of meat/seafood that you just can't find as easily in the states. They also carried a few sundry and toiletry items. Hot Deli: 5 out of 5 Definitely hit the jackpot here, even if it was serendipity because the sushi place was closed. Basically, as the combo - you can choose a fish or a meat (tilapia, ribs, chicken, pork, oxtails, etc.) and they combine it with a very healthy serving of rice and vegetables. Pricing: 3.5 out of 5 The hot deli items I thought were very reasonable - the "small" combo as I mentioned above came in at a call 9.50 which is cheap by island standards. As expected, other items are quite costly, as a 32 oz bottle of Powerade was well over 3 dollars. Local (Caribbean area) beer was reasonably priced, as a 6 pack ranged between 7 and 9 bucks, commensurate with what you might find at a regular liquor store. Customer Service: 4 out of 5 The guy working at the hot deli counter CLEARLY recognized that we weren't from the islands (I wonder how he could tell...bahahah) and was patient with me as I asked about the menu items. He was particularly nice when I asked for a little piece of rib to go along with the stewed beef that I had already ordered. They usually don't mix meat products, but he did me a solid. Overall: 4 out of 5 Drive a little out of the way of Mongoose Junction and just take a leap of faith with the food they have at Starfish. This was our first market stop. It isn't put together very efficiently and it isn't that air conditioned. But they do have a lot of things. After a few days, we ended up stopping by St. John's market and we ended up going there instead of Starfish. It's just a much nicer store. Smaller but it still has a lot that you'll need and want. I knew St John was going to be expensive. However, I had no idea that the rate for a small bag of salad mix was $6. Bananas $1.29 per pound. Small watermelons $11. Frozen veggies $4 per bag. Salmon $20 per pound. We did find some good buys for collard greens that were expiring the day of and were only $3. Tiny bottle of olive oil for $4, it would have been cheaper if we had bought a large bottle at $12. I assume if it expiring the day of they do discount it. The deli meats and cheeses were $11 per pound for gouda and ~$10 per pound for turkey. Basically take DC or any other major city prices and double it, those are the prices of food in St. John. We went to Cost U Less in St Thomas prior to arriving in Saint Johns and glad we stocked up there because items were at least 30% more at Starfish. The staff was pleasant and I did appreciate the free samples of cheese and crackers in the front. They do have a large selection of groceries so I can see why people come here for a one stop shop while on the island. We didn't realize it until we left the store because we did purchase a lot at high prices. In my (limited) experience traveling islands, the grocery model has always worked the other way around: stores near hotels and tourists are overpriced and fully loaded, and stores further into the city are cheaper and far more bland. On St. John, Starfish Market is a minor hustle away from where the action's at, but it clearly aims at the tourist demographic. Which is probably you. Because no local, honestly, is looking at the Yelp reviews for Starfish Market. Aside from the fact that you can delight your American taste buds with all the basics, from cereals to snack chips and candy and soda, it's kind of a trip to think about where all this stuff came from. There's imported German beer and French stinky cheeses, English chocolate, the gamut. We Americans really must have it all, am I right? No skimping on the carbon footprint when it comes to my liver; import that vodka! That said, yeah, expect to drop a massive dime, here, and bring home a bag of stuff that'll sustain you on your arduous journeys along pristine beachfront. My only hint for the thrifty traveler: buy the frozen fruit. It's cheap, the nutrient content is the exact same as the fresh stuff, it's actually much more sound from an environmental standpoint, and it's delicious atop granola and yogurt if you give it a moment to thaw. read more

The employees at this store are rude as hell! They either hate tourists or white people or both. The prices at Starfish are higher priced than Dolphin Market in Coral Bay and several other places . At least the girl at the register at Dolphin Grocery was friendly to me. I was also informed by Antares Management company when we booked our first choice for a house, that it was mandatory we buy our "first day provisions" through them for groceries from Starfish. Bullshit!!! They claim that by not going out in public for one day after traveling that apparently Coronavirus chances go down. Let's use some logic here...if someone actually has it, then buying groceries for one day through a management company isn't making a damn bit of difference. Oh and did I mention that there is $35.00 delivery fee paid to some third party who picks up the groceries??? So needless to say we cancelled that booking and got a different house. We picked up groceries from Price Smart before we took the ferry over. The only reason I even went in that liberal shit hole was because we needed bacon. We have been coming to St John for 18 years and Starfish has been our go to. This year, major decline. We ordered online and received 2/3 of our order. What made me mad, we went into the store and found several of the "not available" options on the shelves. . Throughout our week trip we visited and the service was sub pair. One evening a women named Penny got pissed off because I used an item on the counter as a divide between orders. She even made a rude comment under her breath. She then took a call from an online order that had missing items, refused to assist them, rolled her eyes and proceeded to HANG UP on them. Unbelievable!!! My recommendation, go to Dolphin. They have everything you are looking for around the same price and way better customer service!!! read more

Great place to stock up on provisions you may have forgotten, plus they have a liquor store (across from supermarket)! Lots of stuff to choose from, and prices are what you would expect in the USVI. During our recent trip to St. John Starfish market cheated our family. They ran a promotion for a free gift card worth $50 for purchases of a set amount, encouraging our parents to make additional purchases. Then they issued our parents a blank gift card with $0 balance. When we brought it to the manager's attention she dismissed our concern, and the cashier questioned whether we had spent the $50 without knowing it!? Really??? This store is specially designed to rip off tourists in its pricing. For alternatives, I suggest nearby Dolphin Market instead - they offer friendly service and honesty. read more

Slightly expensive, but a good place to buy necessities, while visiting St. John. the market is nice, there is a large but rather expensive wine and liquor store, several vacation rental offices and Sam and Jack's Deli who is a legendary place in St. John. Boutique style grocery store. Not cheap, but like others said, it's on an island and you're on vacation! We grabbed a couple things for the beach on the grocery store side then went across the hall to the liquor store. Get cans of beer if you're going the the beach (no glass on the beach). They have GREAT sandwiches wrapped to go on the liquor store side, too. In the morning they were making them right there so you know they are fresh. We asked the gent behind the counter for beach suggestions and he said that with the wind out of the north, Trunk Bay would be too rough for snorkeling so he suggested a nice quiet beach on the east end of the island that we NEVER would have found without his suggestion (it was wonderful).
