They are impossible to reach by phone. How can I get an apt. when they do not pick up their phone?…read more I get this odd message that "my call may not be completed". This is unacceptable in health care. I hope their other "standards" are better. If we as patients are unable to get in touch with them, why should I set up any appointments with them? Were it not for her caring and in depth knowledge, I would have just slipped through the medical cracks; as I have for so very many years, and continued to have the trouble I had. My Therapist figured out that the crystals in my ears were severely spread out through multiple passages in my ear canals. Once she fixed those (which took weeks) she discovered huge problems with my balance. Through her patience and testing, I've not only improved, but I have no more Vertigo! This is all she does, this Therapist deals with Migraine and Vertigo, nothing else. I have been (and continue to go) going for over 2 months now, I am able to walk without stumbling, or bumping into walls. My Therapist found out that the 2 nerves in each ear were devastated, due to a medicine I was given back in 2012 to save my life. Sometimes the cure comes at a price, that price was my balance. Thanks to her, I will be seeing specialists regarding my ears and my Migraines. My Therapist also evaluated the 3 types of balance that we all have; eyes, legs, and inner ears. All three of mine have been affected in one way or another, however my eyesight balance has made substantial improvement as well as my leg balance. I am truly grateful to all of the friendly and helpful staff at Sheltering Arms. They are kind and caring people, who give to people like me, far more than they realize. I am never tasked with anything that is beyond my reach, and it is a safe environment to get stronger. My Therapist is cognizant of all of my limitations both there and at home, and she has made me feel comfortable and safe telling her anything regarding my health. She truly has gone the extra mile for me, as far as her knowledge, and her innovations to my therapy program. I would recommend this facility to ANYONE! I would recommend my Therapist to people suffering with Vertigo. She doesn't work miracles, you have to do the work, however she does help and works very hard to make you feel respected, and treated with dignity as a whole person not as a condition.

After the staff evaluation, I was placed in a wheelchair and told for my own safety ( with no falls or history of falls) that I needed to remain in this until the next week eval. There reason for keeping me in a chair was because in the hospital my blood sugar was low but at no point while here did they check it. After eval I was not given or told about a PT schedule which is what I was there for. I was also placed in a room with an older female who could not get herself to the bathroom. Before arriving my doctor told me I would be in rehab for 2wks. The staff at the rehab told me I needed to give 30 day notice. I was told to not cry because I was emotional of being there and if I upset other patients then a psych evaluation would be done. I called my doctor and family members before leaving less than 24hrs. The residents I met and PCA were lovely people but that's it. Most of the amenities that were described in the brochure, were either not shown or discussed. When moving around I didn't see these amenities. For example, personal concierge services, onsite beauty salon, vibrant activities and entertainment. The awful Food uncovered was left on my bed table when I came out of the bathroom and I was not shown a dining area.

The staff are very attentive to my wife and the fact that her doctors at VCU check on her there regularly and are in touch on a frequent bases with Beaufont gives me great peace of mind that she is being well cared for. One more thing....the food is even good there. I have never said that about any health care facility before and my wife has been in quite a few over the past year and a half. While I wish my wife were home now, I am thankful that she is getting the care she needs to come back to me fully recovered. Very thankful for their care for my wife.

I am appalled that this establishment continues to operate without accountability for the neglect and abuse I personally witnessed during the 48 hours my mother was there, which ultimately contributed to her passing. During our brief stay--where we were with her approximately 90% of the time--I observed numerous issues that no elderly individual should endure. These included cockroaches, medication, and feces on the floors, which remained uncleaned throughout our time there. There were dirty diapers under beds, in sinks, and in hallways, and the overwhelming smell of dehydrated urine was pervasive. Patients requiring assistance with feeding or hydration were not provided with food or water throughout the day. Staff failed to check vital signs, wash, or change patients' gowns. Many patients were found completely unclothed, with no efforts made to dress them. The staff appeared disengaged, often sitting in corners eating and using their phones, neglecting their responsibilities to the patients. Additionally, beer cans and dirty gloves were observed in the parking lot. When my mother was scheduled to be placed in the dementia ward, we arrived early to meet her there. The conditions were shocking: urine on the floor, patients wandering without supervision, and a man walking around without pants. I immediately informed staff that my mother could not stay there, and they agreed to move her to the first floor. Upon her arrival, she was placed on a broken, dirty bed in a deplorable room. She was begging for water, but staff refused to assist. Due to her pneumonia, she needed to be positioned upright to drink, but because the bed was broken, we had to manually sit her up and provide water ourselves. My mother is unable to use her arms and legs so she requires full assistance with all of her activities. Once moved to the first floor, she was left unattended--without food, water, vital checks, or any form of assistance. We had to hunt down the nurses and beg them to take her temperature and give her cough medicine. She was crying in pain and they said there was nothing they could do. We were trying to move her out of there as soon as possible however this was a weekend and making new arrangements was not possible until Monday. We cared for her during this time, but when we left for a few hours during the night to rest, we returned the next morning to find her unresponsive. We had to insist that staff measure her temperature, which was 103°F, and call emergency services. They failed to check her oxygen levels, which were dangerously low. She was transferred to the hospital, where she was placed on a ventilator and later passed away. No individual should be subjected to the conditions described here. This place is what nightmares are made of. This facility must be shut down or held criminally liable for neglect and abuse. The staff involved should be terminated immediately. I have documented evidence, including photographs, which have been provided to Adult Protective Services. If you are seeking a nursing home for a loved one, I recommend consulting resources such as Medicare Care Compare. As of now, Canterbury has a two-star rating out of five based on health inspections and other criteria. The hospital informed us that the patient's they see that come from Canterbury are always in terrible condition and that there is new administration there because of all the problems they had. I spoke to the new administrator and she did not seem surprised by what I was telling her. My understanding is she has been there since May but she needs to hurry up and do her job and protect the people that are currently in their care.

This failure represents a serious breach of duty and may have directly contributed to his death. 2. This created an environment where urgent medical needs were not handled appropriately. 3. Failure to Communicate with Family For four (4) days following my father's death, I was unable to speak with any responsible authority at the facility who could explain the events surrounding his passing. This lack of communication is unacceptable and demonstrates a failure in both professionalism and regulatory compliance. 4. Lack of Urgency, Concern, and Accountability There appeared to be no appropriate sense of urgency or concern for my father's condition, either before or after his death. Additionally, no clear explanation or accountability has been provided by the facility to date.

On or about October 30th, she walked in on her cell phone and said, "Oh good God," which was unprofessional and offensive. My mom has swallowing issues from her stroke, yet Joann tried to give her multiple pills at once and moved the cup toward her too fast. When I told her to stop, she snapped, "I've been a nurse over 20 years and I know what I'm doing," and then pushed my hand away as I tried to protect my mom. No nurse should ever push or touch a family member--completely unacceptable behavior. Overall, Sheltering Arms Rehab Center is very good, and the therapy team is excellent. Jonathan was outstanding with my mom's care. I truly hope Joann has been reprimanded and disciplined appropriately so this never happens to another family. Your comment about "everything being painful or involving too much stuff" tells me that you assumed that I didn't want to do the work. Why would I go to PT if I didn't want to make progress? When a patient says something hurts, you should listen to them and make modifications. I'm going to explain my reality to you. I hope that with your next patients, you'll be more mindful and considerate of their needs. You have a full schedule and I can only attend your latest appointments at 2 or 245 PM. I am not usually awake until 2 pm. I have a late sleep schedule and a sleep disorder from PTSD. I have PMDD and I'm in perimenopause which makes this worse. I generally avoid appointments in the 2nd half of my cycle to reduce my stress and the stress that I might put on others at this time. I've also been sick from an antibiotic recently. I made it to the last appointment even though I felt like death. You made a decision to fire me a month ago and you did not communicate that with me. That's not considerate or good care. I don't understand why you didn't communicate your concerns earlier or tell me that there was an expectation about attending in a certain cadence. Your organization is terrible about informed consent. I told my friend about this interaction today and he said this is how abusive people behave. Your judgements and behavior feel ableist and authoritarian. I thought the main problem was the administration, but now I see that you are part of it.

Upon arrival, my father was not greeted or acknowledged. He was dropped off in his room in the wheelchair they brought him in with and left in his room for over an hour and a half without any staff checking in on him, or getting his vitals. The room itself was in unacceptable condition. The bed had no safety railings, which posed a serious fall risk. The lights were not within reach, making it impossible for him to turn them on or off without assistance. The air conditioning unit emitted a strong, greasy mechanical odor and failed to cool the room properly, making the environment uncomfortable and unpleasant. Needless to say, I removed him promptly from this situation knowing that he would not get the care he needed. There were 3 nurses at the desk as I pushed him in his wheelchair past them and still nothing was said. It was as if they were unaware there was a new admission to their wing. Finally, as I went out to get my car a nurse approached and asked if we were leaving. I let her know all the failures we had seen in that hour and half and we would not be back. This level of neglect and disregard for patient safety and comfort is unacceptable in any healthcare setting, especially one that is supposed to provide skilled nursing care.
