I'm seeing a few bad reviews on here about the teaching style being too hard on the kids. We can't baby our kids when it comes learning water safety. The instructors don't view this as playtime - they are all professionals in swim safety and will make sure that your kids are able to safely exit a pool on their own if they were ever to fall in a pool unnoticed. They also have an amazing ability to connect with the kids and make them feel at ease. IF YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO LEARN HOW TO SWIM COME HERE! You can skip the community centers and swim school group classes that teach your kids to splash and sing songs. This place only offers one-on-one private sessions and limits the number of students at any one time to no more than 3. There are no loud distractions or crowds to overwhelm the students. Do yourself a favor and dish out the extra money for private sessions at this place - there's no price on the peace that comes with trusting your kid won't drown if they were to accidentally fall into a pool while they are alone. As for the complaints about the lax customer service - this is a privately owned small business in there backyard of the owner, Kelli's residence. Customer service and greetings are warm and relaxed, which creates a welcoming environment where the kids feel comfortable. Our first session my 4 year old wouldn't put her face in the water and by the third session she could jump into the pool on her own and swim breaststroke all the way to the other end of the pool (so cute to watch a tiny person people do this!!!) At my 6 year olds first session, she could float and doggy paddle. By her third session she could swim breaststroke with side breaths and backstroke. I could not recommend this place more! read more

This place is great. You can take swim lessons all year long as the pool is at the owners house in the backyard and completely covered. The pool is warm for the swimmers and the inside is warm for parents sitting and watching. They have a changing area and bathroom for you to change there. My grandson had Joe and Sam for his lessons. When he started he was very scared and they were so patient and gentle with him. Once he warmed up he really started progressing quickly. I had an excellent experience. The instructors were so welcoming and professional. I was a little nervous to take my 3 year old son for his first one-on-one swim lesson but going there and seeing the instructor who was totally supportive and laid-back I knew he was in good hands. On our first day, while assessing my son's  skills, Kelli took the time needed and gave plenty of encouragement to help him. Happy to not only splash and swim but to go under water as well! After hearing about Starfish Swim School from friends, we kept meaning to sign my daughter up for lessons here, things kept getting in the way and then it came to crunch time, my daughter's school field trip to SunSplash was in 2 months and without lessons she would not be going. My daughter had 2 months of lessons with Kelli and what a difference! Whenever we were at friend's pools and tried to teach our daughter, she would freak out if her face was even near the water. On the FIRST lesson, Kelli had her face in the water no problem. At first our plan was one month of lessons but because of how well it was going we did 2. We are so thankful to Kelli. During the SunSplash trip there was a scare in the Wave pool and I truly believe that thanks to what Kelli taught her it help keep my daughter alive. My daughter had a huge fear of water in 2014, but learned to swim at a similar type of swim school in Southern California in 2015. (Residential set up, less intimidating.) She made wonderful progress there (daily lessons, 3 weeks), but lost it almost completely by Summer 2016. I signed her up with Rocklin Wave for 2 weeks in early summer 2016- what a waste. They barely got her head wet the first week! I was referred to Starfish by a friend/neighbor. At first I balked a little at the price, but it is for private 1-on-1 lessons. As I see it, it has been worth it, because we are getting results. Not only is she okay with getting her head wet, she actually looks forward to her swim lessons! This is our second summer with Starfish Swim School, a total success and we couldn't be happier. The kids had Teacher Kelli and Teacher Wright again (per their requests) and the way the kids progressed this summer (in comparison with last summer) is NIGHT AND DAY. Time was everything for us. It's clear that as months pass they are more and more willing to learn and cooperate. What a treat to see these mini-me's showing confidence in the water, swimming around and being submerged. It's a feeling like no other as a Mama. Highly recommend. If you are shopping around for a swim school, keep in mind that everywhere you go there will be people who have negative things to say, about every business in every industry. The best thing you can do is your research and then give it a shot to see if it works for you and your family. Everything is straightforward at Starfish Swim School. The rates. The policy. The environment. It has always been consistent. People might take issue with the "No make-up classes" policy but that's just the way they operate and it isn't kept a secret. They run a tight ship and have students starting a lesson every half hour. If students were shifting things around and not showing up to lessons, then it would cause all sorts of problems. This is a business (and a successful one at that). It might not be a fit for everyone but it is for us and the other parents I've met who have their kids enrolled. I love the place and all the staffs are very nice. They are very professional, knowledgeable and courteous. I definitely recommend coming here for all of your swimming needs. This swim school has quite a bit of potential. The teachers are friendly and knowledgeable. They listen to the parents concerns and address things clearly. However, the owner seems to be all over the place. We've had several issues with schedule and half the time I don't think the teachers even know who they're supposed to be swimming with. It just seems a little unorganized and like the owner doesn't care about the staff or students as long as she is getting paid. read more

Our boys have been going to Starfish for a full year and are fully swimming. My 4year old was swimming after 3 lessons, and my two year after a few months. They are so kind and patient with our kids, and we are forever thankful for the life skills they have taught our boys. Pool safety is SO important... We recently took our 2 year old daughter, who has always loved water and being in pools, to this 'school' for lessons as we saw the great Yelp reviews and lots of traffic going there constantly over the years. To our dismay however, what appears to be a swim 'school' is nothing more than a systematic, impersonal cash generating machine with apparently no regards to customer service or the sensitivity that all children are different and have different needs when it comes to learning how to swim. Our child was dunked under water within the first 2 minutes of class, with almost zero warning and not even a conversation with her parents on her swim history and/or any aversions she might have...like the fact she has never been underwater and doesn't really know what to do when somebody says to hold their breath! She was terrified and then they dunked her a second time while she was still crying and begging not to go under again, which is when my wife had to step in. The instructor then let go of her before she could reach the edge allowing her to go under the water yet again. our child was so traumatized that she sobbed after class and refused to go back. Swimming lesson protocols and opinions aside however, we were equally disappointed at the general lack of customer service and communication throughout this whole ordeal. Had they just taken a little time to address the issues we had with the first lesson (and subsequently the second) we likely wouldn't feel the need to even write this review. But, because they seem to take the approach that they are doing no wrong by ignoring our communications and requests, we feel it necessary to write this. As for our daughter, we are thankful for her resiliency after what was a very traumatic experience at this 'school'. read more

Called and left a voicemail to get information about swim lessons - over 2 months later and no call back.

Parents read the reviews carefully, don't just look at the stars and think this is a good option. What I've learned: 1. All the negative reviews reflect what I've personally seen and experienced in my child's few lessons at this swim school. 2. Customer service is nonexistent: a. I arrived 15 minutes early for our first lesson, even though the owner was home and we walked right in front of her she didn't acknowledge our presence at all! Mind you, this is in January so it's cold and wet outside. We were ignored for at least 10 minutes before the owner showed us there was a "swim room" at the far end of the house. b. No one came into the swim room to inform us they were ready to start the lesson. I thought, "let's go out and see what the holdup is" and there's the teacher sitting in the pool waiting for us and we didn't have a clue (5 minutes of the 30-minute lesson wasted waiting for them). c. No introduction; my child's teacher barley introduce herself to me and my child. We weren't told anything about how the lesson would go and we weren't asked anything about my child's experience level. 3. They charge you by the month, with no makeup sessions or consideration. My child got the flu and rather than expose others I called in advance to tell them. No one called me back or confirmed that my message was even received. No makeup session was offered or even considered when I asked. 4. My child was also released in the water without warning! I wouldn't say dunked so much as just let go of and they allowed for the head to go under. Now, had anyone ask me, water getting on my child's head even in the bath is a big freaking deal so you can imagine the reaction. Crying, screaming and saying "I want mommy". At first, I honestly thought this was an accident or mistake. I thought that the teacher (a teenager) didn't mean to let my child's head go underwater so I didn't freak-out. I consoled my child from where I was watching and even walking closer saying it's okay and that it wouldn't happen again. Over the next couple of classes I watch as my child clearly didn't trust the teacher and from what I can tell the teacher didn't try to regain trust. My child would grab the teachers neck and refuse to let go during the lessons. A few lessons in I suggested that the pool steps be used to coach about holding one's breath and testing putting their own head under water. My suggestion was taken for two lessons and then on a day when I wasn't there, all hell apparently broke loose and my child was inconsolable. Now I wasn't there, and what I've learned about what happened isn't clear to me but suddenly my child refuses to work with her teacher and owner has to step-in. 5. Starting over with the owner, during my child's first lesson to my great surprise she was once again released, just dropped without warning! And I watch my child reach for the teacher and struggle as their head is going under and start freaking out as the teacher just watches! I couldn't believe my eyes. If I thought the throw your child in and let them sink or swim was an option I wouldn't be paying for PRIVATE LESSONS!!!! Needless to say my child has no interest in going to swimming lessons any longer. In conclusion this person really shouldn't even be in business with small children. From what I saw I would consider their teaching method to be borderline child endangerment. read more

We have been going here for a year now. Angelica and Kelly are absolutely amazing! Our daughter was very scared of the pool and Kelly reduced her fear to nearly zero, then Angelica took over the following summer. She's now swimming and loves water. I cannot praise this place enough, my husband and I are very pleased with the Starfish Swim School! We started bringing our son when he was just 5 months old (he is now 10 months) Our instructor Kelli who is also the owner is so gentle and cautious with our son and asked me permission every time when putting him under the water. She has coached my husband and I on ways to practice outside of swim lessons. Not to mention we have had to switch our time slot a few times due to nap and life scheduling and they have always been able to accommodate us. They are also great at communicating for they always respond very quickly via email or phone. Love this place! Would highly recommend!! read more

A few years ago I had an interview / training / 1 day on the job here. I have since warned all of my extended family against this sketchy place. I was let into a pool and given small children and infants to hold, to swim with, and to teach swimming to. I am not CPR trained and I was completely clear about that to the staff. I am not a strong swimmer and I was also completely clear about that. On top of that, they had not trained me in any way other than a classroom setting. I was given children with nothing more than some loose supervision. An incredibly uncomfortable experience and I am very very glad they ended up deciding not to bring on either of us who applied. Not a fan of what goes on behind closed doors at this place and absolutely would not recommend it. There were other things that I think were very questionable that took place during this brief period but I am refraining from posting them for the sake of it being not directly relevant to customers. read more

After friends highly recommended this school, I figured we'd give it a try with my 2.5 year old son. My son loves the water, but our goal was for him to be comfortable swimming by himself before the summer. First impression- wow, these people really are about the money. First phone call wanted a credit card up front and were going to charge the whole month. Apparently, they don't offer any makeup classes-- no matter the circumstance. First class- I was SO excited, probably more excited than my son for him to start private swimming. It was expensive, so I was really looking for him to get a lot out of it. We parked on the main street, walked up with my toddler (and my newborn) in tow and walked through the back gate (maybe that was the right entrance?) to nobody there to greet us or show us around. I was really caught off guard by the lack of customer service. I had paperwork to fill out, a kid to change, and class was starting in 15 minutes. A kind mother who had a child in class showed me around and showed us where to change. It wasn't until he was completely changed that someone walked in with paperwork for me to fill out. I signed everything super fast so that we wouldn't cut into precious class time. We then waited for class to start. Josh, my son's teacher, didn't even get out of the pool to introduce himself or explain what was going to happen in class. This was our first class, I was expecting a lot more! Something like "Hey Miles, I'm Josh. Are you ready to learn how to swim?!" Some excitement. Any excitement. Instead, he called my son's name, he got in the water, and I watched from a distance. My son really enjoyed being in the water. He did GREAT! But Josh is not a very exciting or kid-friendly instructor. He looked bored, annoyed, and was monotone (which is not what I'd expect from someone working with kids). He also dunked Miles in the water without warning....a lot. He'd be swimming through the water (being held) one second and then underwater choking on water the next. I'd think something like "okay, now we're going underwater, hold your breath! one two three." would have been more appropriate than catching my son off-guard. My son knows how to hold his breath and doesn't mind going underwater, but the poor kid had no idea when it was going to happen and at the end of class had red eyes and a pathetic look on his face after chugging so much pool water. Anyway, I thought maybe that's the way to teach him? Idk, but it didn't feel right. The first and second classes went just like that. The third class, I noticed my son being clingy prior to class starting. I assumed he was getting sick since I know my kid and can read his cues. As soon as Josh called his name, screaming tears. He did NOT want to swim. He got in anyway and stared at me the whole time. Saying "I want to see Mommy" multiple times. I noticed his voice was sounding hoarse and told Josh I was going to get his water. Josh said "that's not going to help. He's just working you". I got him water anyway. Josh made other rude comments like "This happens. Swimming is hard and kids don't like things that are hard." Hmm, that's funny because my child loves swimming and takes direction very well. The kid is sick. I took him out of class because he was clearly miserable and Josh made faces and comments like "He's just going to do it again if you give in." UGH! I don't think Josh has kids of his own, because a parent would understand that sometimes kids don't feel well or just aren't up for it. We left. I was pretty upset with the whole situation. And wouldn't you know my kid, in fact, was sick... he wasn't just being a brat. We didn't go to the last class. And will not be back. read more

Unlike the other two negative reviews, my daughter went here for several months so this is not just a flippant review based off of one lesson. I actually liked this place at first as did my daughter who was usually excited to go and loved her instructor. But then in the last month things started to change. The first lesson that month another girl (who was usually there at the same time we were every week) had complete melt down as soon as she got in the water. Her mother informed me she had not had her usual nap and this was usually the end result. I was okay with it as it was my thinking that after it became obvious the girl would not be cooperative, she would be asked to try again the next week. But after passing the screaming child around to all the instructors including Kelli the owner, nothing changed. None of the instructors or the owner said or suggested anything to the mother. Yes, that's right, I was forced to sit through a scream-fest for 20 of the 30 minute lesson until the mother finally woke up and took her daughter home. Meanwhile my daughter (who was completely distracted - as any toddler would be) was repeatedly reprimanded for not paying attention to her lesson and her instructor! The instructor also put her into Star Fish's version of a timeout (Sitting outside on the ledge the pool) and chided her for not paying attention. After this happened a second time in the first 15 minutes I spoke up and told the instructor that she was expecting the impossible under the circumstances. I was livid but since this was an anomaly I let it slide. I did tell Kelli that I did not appreciate the fact that they kept the screaming child in the pool when it was obvious she was not going to behave. She apologized but didn't offer a free make up session - that also irked me. The next 3 weeks devolved into her instructor pulling this time out number with less and less time for my daughter to get a new exercise perfect. Where she was once completely patient, the instructor now had none and from my vantage point, started to let her frustration show. I thought it was just me at first after week 2 so I sent my wife to take our daughter the following week. She came back equally disturbed by the instructor's change in patience and attitude. She brought it up to Kelli but nothing of note was said by her according to me wife. We decided we would give the school and her instructor one more week. Now my daughter is not a difficult child and normally likes to learn new things enthusiastically (She's gone on to dance classes, gymnastics and soccer with great results and no problems at all) but she quickly started to second guess herself for fear she would be punished during her swim lessons. This really started to bother me. By the last week she started asking if us she had to go to swim lessons (This from the same child who used to excitedly countdown to her swim day). The last week not only did the instructor pull the same stuff but she put her in a TO without any warning after only 5 minutes in. This time my wife spoke up and the instructor apologized and then without telling my child or us anything, she handed her over to Nick - another instructor who my daughter had never worked with before. Now she was at that age where other males intimidated her and she immediately freaked out. Kelli took her after another 10 minutes of her crying and eventually calmed her down but at that point we'd used up more than half our lesson. To my wife and I, this was the last straw as we'd paid for 4 lessons and had the equivalent of maybe 1 and 1/2 due to the instructors' impatience and chiding, the screaming girl who wasted an entire lesson and the bad choices of the rest of the staff. My wife and I informed Kelli that we were done and how we could not understand how her instructor's attitude could change so quickly for the worse. I also reiterated how poorly the 1st week's episode was handled but again, just an apology was offered. Star Fish likes to follow their strict curriculum which is a progression towards competitive swimming, all strokes, etc. I brought my daughter there so she could simply learn how to swim, know what to do if she accidentally fell in and learn to have fun in the water. Once she got the basics down her instructor continually pushed her to towards more advanced strokes and moves I felt were way beyond what we were looking for. And yes, I voiced this too. It started to feel more like practice for a team instead of learning how to enforce what was already taught and learned. The instructor's impatience was a direct contributing factor in making the fun disappear and once it was gone- my daughter wasn't interested anymore. That's poor instruction IMO. Bottom line, this place will teach your kids what they need but it seems like they're more interested in collecting money than making sure you're getting the custom experience YOU want. And, for what they charge, you should. read more

Starfish Swim School is a miracle-worker! My son, who's 6, was terrified to put his face under the water. We tried the regular city lessons, and they were super nice there, but it just didn't work for him. They were almost too nice to get him to learn when he was scared and didn't want to. A friend who takes her two kids here recommended Kelli, and I couldn't be happier. Kelli and Teacher Wright are gentle and kind, yet also somehow magically can push kids to do things they're afraid of in a small, calm environment. They use play to convince kids that swimming is fun, and because they're one on one, they can always hold them and make them feel safe while they're learning. It was EXACTLY what my son needed. He feels totally comfortable with them, and they get him to do what he needs to do, even when he's afraid. The first day he freaked out a little and tried to refuse to put his head under, and Teacher Wright sweetly and matter-of-factly told him he was going to be brave and do it anyway. Now, after only a couple of lessons, he voluntarily puts his face under! Even just after the first day, he was putting his face in sprinklers, which he's never done before! I've also started bringing my 3 year old daughter, and Kelli has worked her magic on her as well! I truly can't say enough nice things about this school. The demeanor of Kelli and her staff is simply perfect for teaching kids to swim. It's such an important safety and life skill, but sometimes kids are afraid. They know the importance of pushing kids past their comfort zone, but they are able to accomplish it in a way that my kids (and I!) are totally comfortable with. I'm really happy with Starfish Swim School. My son started at the beginning of the season, he was terrified of going under water and had no idea how to actually swim. We landed with Instructor Noah who has the best demeanor and an endless amount of patience. My son loves going under water now and is improving his skills every single week. The owner is equally as nice and patient with the children. My son loves swimming with Noah and looks forward to his lesson every week. the price point is great as well. I usually don't review much, but I have to say that my daughter has been going here for nearly five months. Her swimming has improved by leaps and bounds. The special individualized attention by the teachers is exactly what she needs. My daughter has had most of the teachers at different times, and they all have been very patient with her. Because that's the maximum amount of time you can picture yourself taking swim lessons in an above-ground pool. If it was 31 seconds, the actor would say "The water is only up to here? My son whom is 3.5 years old has had swim lessons every summer. He has done great in previous years but the prior swim program has since closed. We tried this school as it is a similar set up. Upon arrival of the first class instead of being welcomed and shown around all I was asked was did I park in the proper location and have I paid. My answer was yes to both. I then was on my own with my son and newborn in search of the changing room. After a wrong door we stumbled upon where I guess we should be changing. Josh was the teachers name. I HIGHLY DISCOURAGE ANYONE from having their child taught by this young man. He was cold,rude and clearly has no children experience what so ever. Since he neglected to be at all welcoming my son wanted none of it. It took him 15 minutes to get in the pool. After that it was about 10 minutes spent in the pool. I had a bad feeling at this point but I try to follow through and give things a chance. Our arrival of the second class I brought my mom to get a second opinion. After 10 minutes of my son not wanting in the pool and this teach Josh looking as though he could not possibly be more annoyed he got in. The whole 10 minutes in the pool were full of lies, threats, tight grips on my sons arm and ridiculous comments like telling my 3 year old he was wasting time any money cause he did not want to put his face in the water. The owner whom emailed me and after I said my peace and total dissatisfaction all she really seemed to make of point of was that she was not going to give me a full refund. Clearly this lady does bad business and by charging a month upfront and people quitting is how she makes her money. Horrible experience. Highly advise to look elsewhere read more

We have had the best experience here with swim lessons. My children all learned to swim here with their gentle but disciplined approach. My oldest works on stroke, the others couldn't swim at all and now they can! All the instructors are wonderful. The atmosphere is calm and reassuring. The kids can really work on their skills without a lot of distraction. I am absolutely thrilled at the fact that my kids can swim now and have a positive attitude in the water. My son started swim lessons at the indoor pool in Roseville doing group lessons. After a couple of months I noticed he was not advancing the way I thought he should be. I put him in lessons at Starfish Swim School and have noticed a huge improvement. He is only 3 but by the end of the first lesson he was swimming to the steps by himself, something he was previously trying to do at the other lessons for several months. My 3 kids have been taking lessons here since Fall of 2012. We love it! Our kids are learning so much. I can see improvements every week. All the teachers are great. My 6 year old did not like to put his face in the water when he started. At the 4th lesson, he was floating! They teach swimming as well as being safe in the water. My daughter and son just finished 6 weeks at Starfish Swim School and both the kids did amazing. I love the private setting, it was very calming and soothing for my kids. Their instructors were Wright and Quinn. They were extremely professional and patient with my kids. My son also had Bennett once when he was covering for Wright and he was just as great. My daughter adores Quinn. I was very impressed that both my kids were swimming after their first lesson. The instructors were very positive during their lessons and they were taught how to be safe around a pool. We used to go to Sea Otter, but Starfish is a better value and it's still private, one-on-one lessons. I did 20 minute lessons w/ Sea Otter, but Starfish does 30 minute lessons for approximately the same price. They had a lot more availability and no "registration" fee. You just pay month by month. They do not do make up lessons, which I wish they would, but it seems no private swim lesson place does that, so I don't hold that against them. The teachers are firm but kind. My son went from being scared to put his face in the water to actually swimming in less than a month. At Sea Otters, the progress was much slower and I feel the registration fee was a rip off.
