I have two swimmers at Starfish and they LOVE it!!! I could not recommend this swim school enough. I feel so safe having my 4 year old and 1 year old in the water with the Starfish swim coach's. It's a wonderful establishment and I'm so happy I found this swim school over 2 years ago.

I'm seeing a few bad reviews on here about the teaching style being too hard on the kids. We can't baby our kids when it comes learning water safety. The instructors don't view this as playtime - they are all professionals in swim safety and will make sure that your kids are able to safely exit a pool on their own if they were ever to fall in a pool unnoticed. They also have an amazing ability to connect with the kids and make them feel at ease. IF YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO LEARN HOW TO SWIM COME HERE! You can skip the community centers and swim school group classes that teach your kids to splash and sing songs. This place only offers one-on-one private sessions and limits the number of students at any one time to no more than 3. There are no loud distractions or crowds to overwhelm the students. Do yourself a favor and dish out the extra money for private sessions at this place - there's no price on the peace that comes with trusting your kid won't drown if they were to accidentally fall into a pool while they are alone. As for the complaints about the lax customer service - this is a privately owned small business in there backyard of the owner, Kelli's residence. Customer service and greetings are warm and relaxed, which creates a welcoming environment where the kids feel comfortable. Our first session my 4 year old wouldn't put her face in the water and by the third session she could jump into the pool on her own and swim breaststroke all the way to the other end of the pool (so cute to watch a tiny person people do this!!!) At my 6 year olds first session, she could float and doggy paddle. By her third session she could swim breaststroke with side breaths and backstroke. I could not recommend this place more!

I called and inquired about private lessons and left a voicemail. I received a call back promptly and courteously. They even had last minute private lessons available at an affordable cost. My six year old daughter has taken 6 months of swim lessons with limited progress. In one lesson with Sea Otter's Rosie was learning how to hold her breath for extended periods of time, flip on her back, and move forward with confidence. I was so impressed with her newly acquired ability but most importantly -- she was thrilled with her progress and abilities! Her instructor was fantastic! And she was so excited to tell me about her experience in the water. This was truly the first time she has been enthusiastic about her swim lessons and what she was able to master in the water. The location is also fantastic and the shaded pool is great but most importantly we were impressed with the staff and swim instructors who (although they maybe young) are truly fantastic and care about the kids they teach,

I kindly asked if we could wait for a female instructor, or return another time for a female instructor. The office told me it was either now with the male or come to family swim. For $60+ for a 20 minute session, I'd expect better service and quality. Won't be returning.

Even though the party time window is a bit short, I do appreciate that they have the option to shut the place down for private events. They also provide a private party room for your group to use, which is really convenient. The indoor pool is actually warm (which I truly appreciate, because I've been to plenty of places that claim their pools are "warm" when they definitely are not). There's also a section where kids have to pass a swim test to receive a bracelet, which allows them access to the deeper area and the inflatable play zone. There are plenty of lifeguards on duty, so it always feels safe, and they provide life jackets as well. All kids are required to wear approved life vests while in the water. I also like that there are showers right by the pool, along with doors that lead directly into the men's and women's locker rooms and bathrooms. It makes it easy to enter and exit from both the indoor and outdoor areas, although parents should definitely keep an eye on their kids since there are multiple exit points. One thing to note is that they're pretty strict about party timing. If you go over your allotted time, they may not always remind you, but they will charge you afterward. I really wish they had separate designated party time and swim time, because it can feel rushed trying to fit everything in at once. Overall, it's a nice place to take the kids. They also offer swim lessons and other programs, which is a plus. The only downside is that some of the front desk staff seem young and occasionally don't have clear answers to specific questions. This wasn't our first visit and definitely won't be our last.

I feel like I'm swimming in a greenhouse when the roof is closed. I love not having to wear sunscreen, a hat, or sunglasses, but some people still might. So many water fitness classes offered here! There are multiple classes Monday to Friday. Only 1 class on Saturday and Sunday, but that's still pretty good. You need to get a wristband for each water fitness class. The most popular and biggest class is the Hydro Fusion class held MWF 10:30 am and TR 9:05 am. You can start getting a wristband for this class 1 hour ahead of time. I've also enjoyed the Shallow H20 Fit classes and the Monday night Aqua Yoga class. I don't think you can reserve a swim lane. You just hope for an empty lane, stay in your half lane if you have to share with 1 other swimmer, or circle swim if there are 3+ swimmers in a lane. If you need to move between lanes, staff wants you to swim under the lane dividers. They are afraid the lane dividers can't hold the weight of a person. There are so many lifeguards! Sometimes during class or if you're in the middle pool lanes, it feels awkward seeing them loom over you. They're ready to rescue you! There are swim programs for kids. For Easter, there is a floating egg hunt! For Halloween, there is a floating pumpkin patch. https://www.roseville.ca.us/government/departments/parks/programs_classes/fitness/ Look under Mike Shellito Indoor Pool, Fitness Schedules, and Memberships for details. Very affordable, especially if you are a resident of Roseville. You can pay for a monthly membership, buy a 10 or 20 visit punch card, or just drop in. Every January, there is a punch card promo to get you exercising: Buy 10, Get 5 free visits. The cool thing about the punch card or daily drop-in is that you can attend as many classes at any of the 3 Roseville exercise facilities (Mike Shellito, Mahany Fitness Center, Maids Community Center) that day! This is the daily class schedule: https://groupexpro.com/schedule/788/?view=new I had some bad luck when I initially tried out evening classes with last-minute cancelations or no shows. I waited over a year to try my first evening class. Bring your own towel and lock for the locker room. Only 4 shower stalls inside the locker room. Many people just rinse off and head home in their swim parkas. I also bring my own bag for the wet clothing and swimsuit. There's only 1 type of shampoo/body wash foam, so you might want to bring conditioner. No paper towels in the restrooms, just hand dryers. Leave time to park, check in, use locker room, and grab your weights and noodle before class. Pool closes between 1:15 pm and 3:45 pm Mon to Thu. On Fri, it's closed between 1:15 pm and 6:35 pm. Sat and Sun stays open until 4 pm with no midday closure. If you enjoy swimming or aqua fit classes or water therapy, I highly recommend Mike Shellito.

This review is for Aqua-Tots swim level 3…read more We've wasted about $1000 bringing our 5-year old kid here hoping that he would learn to swim and tread water. After 8 months of lessons, he hadn't learned a single swim stroke (e.g. Elementary breaststroke, freestyle), and he still doesn't know how to tread water. The staff are super friendly and helpful, but Aqua-Tot's lesson plan is extremely ineffective for Level 3. Instead of learning useful strokes, our kid wasted 80% of his time in class sitting on the side out of the water waiting for his turn to get in, and the other 20% of the time learning unimportant skills such as "Chicken Star Rocket" and how to float on the back. All we really wanted was for him to learn a single stroke so that he can swim in the pool by himself. Everything else was secondary. At Level 3 and above, classes are shared with 4 kids per class, and they only teach 1 kid at a time. The trainers also spend a lot of time swapping between kids and checking their tablets for progress. So each kid really only gets about 5 minutes of training per 30 minute class. There's a lot of wasted time. The biggest problem with Aqua-Tots is the lesson plan. They don't allow kids to begin learning any swim strokes until they master a very large number of unimportant skills. These include skills such as flipping over, floating on the back, "Chicken Star Rocket", and keeping their head underwater for a long period of time. It's pretty easy to accomplish these skills at the 2-stars level, but getting the 3 stars to completely master them is very difficult. Normally, kids should learn breaststroke, and then they'll naturally pick up all the extra skills naturally on their own without needing any training. In summary, we wasted $1000 and 8 months without having learned either breaststroke or freestyle.
