I had originally purchased (and returned unopened) a vacuum from Costco. I have been staying really neat and using a hand vac for my small messes. I decided to stop in to look around at the selection the other day. My takeaway was this...vacuums basically start at $130 and go up to $1,300+. There is no getting around it unless I go to Goodwill or ReStore and see about getting a used one, which might not be a bad idea. I went to Stark's after multiple friends recommended it, telling me I could test the vacuums and the staff were knowledgeable. I was worried I'd be sales-pitched, but that didn't happen. The employees were busy but were able to deftly serve us all. I told them what I was looking for, and they didn't try to upsell me. They let me try the recommended model, and I was satisfied it would do the job. Then they offered to put it together for me and discard the packaging so I wouldn't have to deal with that process--no extra charge. A quick price comparison online shows I got a fair price, and the best part was I knew when I walked out that the vacuum would work for me. I also know where to go if I need it serviced! My Dyson upright vacuum cleaner stopped sucking! I hauled it into the closest Stark's Vacuums store in Beaverton, plopped it on the counter and a sales person greeted me immediately. Within 3 minutes, he had the vacuum cleaner in pieces and the reason(s) for the clog was discovered: CAT TOYS!!! Somehow, two small fuzzy mice had been sucked up and were clogging the air hose. He also determined that all the air filters were dirty and needed replacing, while mentioning something about cat hair having a way of doing that. To be perfectly honest, I have had the vacuum cleaner for many years and never cleaned or replaced the filters so it was time. All totaled, about $100. Next time I need to replace filters, Stark's is where I will go. read more

I brought in a Kenmore vacuum (I've never liked much) that stopped working. Rick fixed it on the spot (the cover was loose) and I decided I'd keep it to use upstairs and then buy a better vacuum for downstairs. Rick showed me several brands. I ended up taking two brands home to try. I brought one back the next day and kept a Riccar vacuum, which is a brand I've never tried before. It is an excellent machine that is very well made and works beautifully with strong suction. It was also half the price of the other model I tried. I also ended up buying a Riccar floor cleaner which I've tried and love it. It makes cleaning hardwood floors so much easier and the machine is light weight and very easy to use. Rick was very helpful and didn't try to sell me anything I didn't want or need. The service was great! I will buy my vacuums from Stark and never again from Amazon. I went in to get my Dyson vacuum serviced for a trigger that stopped working. The price to replace the trigger and a full service was about $99. I asked if it would be worth it to replace the full assembly (found it on Amazon for the same price). The gentleman behind the desk was shocked at the price but also sent me away and recommended getting the assembly instead. Honest. Though I didn't get my vacuum serviced here, I'll definitely be back for anything I need. This kind of honesty is rare to find these days, sadly. read more

Didn't try to sell me on anything else, didn't try to fox something he knew he couldn't fox, didn't charge me for the advice. Yesterday I brought my vacuum to be inspected as it was not working. I thought maybe it needed new parts or something was seriously wrong with it. When I walked in, I was greeted by Barry at the front counter. He took a look at the vacuum thoroughly and found that there was a lot of blockage. He was able to clear all that out and the vacuum is back to working properly again. He didn't charge me anything for his time in fixing the problem. Terrible customer service. Bought 5 face masks, opened 2 and both were sewn crooked. Didn't open the other 3. Contacted customer service and was given a snarky "our policy is returns only with manufacturing defect" "Take Care & Stay Healthy!". REFUSED to give me owners or managers contact number. RIP OFF. I had never been to Stark's before but would definitely go again and recommend them. I had a belt break in the middle rug cleaning - ugh whole house torn apart - not what I needed. I had to order the belt online from another source (shortage problems with Hoover). I took my rug cleaner in, they replaced the belt in about 5 min and didn't charge me anything. MY HEROES!!! I recently dropped a heavy chair on my 30-year-old Miele vacuum and broke the part that connects the hose to the vacuum.  Took it into Stark's and Josh, who was working the counter, found a replacement part in his inventory -- last one since this vacuum is old -- and replaced it in 10 minutes without charging me for labor.  (The part cost around $35.)  Definitely worth it since the vacuum is still going strong.)  I hope my vacuum lasts another 30 years but if it breaks, I'm buying my next one from Stark's.  Suck it, Amazon! read more

My five year old Royal vacuum (second hand, even) wasn't feeling well - in fact - it wouldn't *do* anything except light up that the bag was full, despite new bags. It was pretty banged up, and I figured, "Well. Time for a brand spanking new $300+ vacuum to combat pug hair..." I brought it into this location figuring I'd have to leave it, get a call in a few days that it would be some exorbitant cost to repair, and that would seal the "new vacuum coming home" deal. Instead...they plugged it in and went, "Hmmm..." and disconnected the hose, and went and sucked it out with some special, high-power device...and voila, the stupid thing was working again. No warning lights, no issues, nothing. I bought a new filter (which it DID need) and went on my way - out of there in 15 minutes with my vacuum, that while still banged up, is back to working like new. No hassle, no lies about needing to spend a fortune on repairs or new parts or a new vacuum, just a quick little cleaning and I was on my way. AWESOME. I'd drop in there any time for help in the future, extra vacuum bags...and some day, a new, shiny vacuum. But apparently I won't need that for a while! YAY! read more

Suck it!!!!!! Over six years ago I bought a crazy cheap vacuum from Target. It does the trick. I'm pretty committed to my super cheap vacuum. I have a cat that sheds continually. So, I really don't see the point in buying a million dollar vacuum, when I know I'll be sucking up fresh fur every other day. My super sucky vacuum is bag less but uses a filter. Said filter fills with CAT fur purrrdy quick. This requires a new filter about 3 times a year! Sometimes more. They're only $10. Which is great. Starks continues to carry my filter. I'm pretty thankful. This lets me stretch out the life of my cheap sucky friend. This place is awesome. Customer service is impeccable. I don't always remember my filter number. Too many numbers in my life. So, the different guys at the counter and I do this dance. Where, I describe in words and hand gestures, what my filter looks like! They run back and forth behind the counter bringing out different filters to determine which is the one I need. I guess they really should keep the filters where the customer can check them out. But, then I wouldn't get to do the dance I do with my guys at the counter. Sometimes I get pretty frustrated and doubt the chosen filter is the right one. I first found Starks after my vacuum stopped working (vacuumed up some pine needles) and figured I should look into getting it looked at before rushing to Target to buy a new one (my usual plan of action). Turns out, it was pretty easy to fix. The tech at Starks checked it out while I waited, sucked out the pine needles that were jammed in it and gave it back to me; free of charge. Saved me a couple hundred dollars for sure! I've also taken a carpet shampooer to Starks for service after some rubber bands broke inside of it. They charged a small fee, which I was glad to pay, and got it back to me the same day. Great staff. Great service. Highly recommended. read more

This is my second time visiting this location. Both times I had the same experience and in this case, they were both not good. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is due to company standard seeming to be that they price match. They really reel ya in over the phone, seem friendly, answer all questions quick and efficiently, makes some jokes have some laughs. I enjoy they will price match whether it's another store or amazon. Definite downfall is when you arrive, nothing... just tumble weeds blowing across the show room lol and the personality of the people who were here working are just as dry or as I originally said it to my friend they were like dealing with a wet rag just so bland and such a drag, just so boing and barely friendly and not very full of life like they portray themselves to be over the phone. The gal working at the register with the shorter blond hair was just so awkward when I went to check out, and the guy who helped me over the phone was standing near her, he could care lesssssss that I came into the store, no thank you for your business or how's your day been, nothin.. Long story short, they may have good pricing but I may be willing to spend just a little more elsewhere for better consistent, more friendly service. I felt too awkward after my 2 visits here it makes me not wanna go anywhere near this location. The first visit here was when I had to come get vacuum bags and was told incorrect pricing over the phone and the same guy(this was my first visit a few years ago) even though he gave me one pricing over the phone, tried to charge me more when I got there and basically gave me the cold shoulder initially when I arrived and they expected me to pay more than quoted, he was semi aggressive in person opposed to over the phone. Starks in Portland was what got me loving the high-quality and amazing customer service of this chain of businesses. We own one of their top brand models, a $1600.00 Simplicity Synergy Premium model. So, we like to protect our investment, as it's one of the best tools in our home. We recently moved out closer to the Beaverton location and initially spoke with a very friendly older gentleman about purchasing a part for the unit that we could install ourselves. He advised that if we had trouble, we could bring in the part ($20 fan) and they would only charge labor $60, and also promoted their one day service availability. I didn't believe him, so I checked their website and lo and behold, they state that it is a service they offer! Impressed by all of this, and after getting annoyed with all of the disassembly, we brought in our unit on another day for service and was quoted by a younger man $15 more than we had previously been advised. Okay...$75 to screw a fan into place because we've already done the work and taken the vacuum apart? Well, we bit the bullet despite being quoted $60 with the other employee knowing the unit was taken apart when quoting that price. It's a Saturday when we drop it off, and this man then says our unit will be done no later than Friday morning of next week. Ah, so...can we purchase the one day option? No, he advises, we never do same day repair, only in the most special of circumstances. Hmm, that differs from what a more tenured employee AND your corporate website says. We'll have to potentially wait 8 days - if you could try for sooner, as we're using the vacuum for a deep house clean before we move. Person gladly acknowledges this and we leave. Welp, it's Saturday afternoon. Where is our vacuum? Oh, well, we just got off the phone with an employee named Rick. They haven't even STARTED on our unit. He actually said, "Huh, I guess we forgot about it, but that wasn't me, I haven't been here. Or probably it was just skipped over, that happens sometimes. Uh, we could offer you a loaner until it's done, and I don't know when that will be." No, Rick. I'm sorry, friend, but my vacuum has been sitting on a work bench for a week, being ignored? Nobody thought to check and see when it was brought in? What is your system of organization? Hey Rick, can I chat with a manager? "Uhhh no. I mean no you can't, he's not in until Monday. But we'll get to your vacuum next, it should only be a few days." Excuse me? Can you offer a discount on the repair and your one day service since I'm presenting you with a problem your staff caused? "No, we don't discount things. And like I said, I wasn't here so I don't have anything to do with it. But my manager's name is [redacted] if you wanna call him, but he comes in pretty late." I'm sorry, you won't take my info (that you already have) and have him contact me? Fine, I'm going to be calling him, because this is a major hassle and you broke your repair time guarantee. "Yeah well like I said I wasn't here. So you can call him I guess." I am utterly amazed that the staff of this location do this brand name such a disservice by their blatant disregard for basic customer service. Rick, my friend, you even said it was your other co-workers who made the mistake. Then you said your manager didn't come in until late anyways so you implied it would be a hassle to contact him and attempt to sort out this mess of a situation. Lastly, you DID NOT APOLOGIZE for your company's mistake and inability to resolve the situation at an employee level. Your manager is gone the entire weekend? So there are two days a week where if a problem happens, the customer just has to deal with it? I'll update this review once I interact with the manager on 10/1/17. Update: When picking up the vacuum, we were told the service was comped because of their long repair turnaround. I've added two stars for that, but I'd also like to note there was zero apology and apparently this is their standard for all repairs that go over the quoted time. One last comment that the repair was replacing a fan, which we provided the manufacturer part for, on a unit that we had already disassembled. read more

I have an older Eureka vacuum which had been handed down to me years ago. Hasn't worked for over a year, I think due to excessive hair and pine needles from last Xmas. Brought it in after I had already taken it apart and tried everything to get it to function properly and get it unclogged. BARRY was there to quickly and efficiently figure out where the clog was, clean it out and get it working for me in minutes -- for FREE! He was knowledgeable and friendly - happy to help. I felt a little silly for waiting a year to bring it in needless to say! Will definitely be back for a new vacuum in the coming years to this store! read more

A couple months ago when I moved here, I needed a vacuum cleaner. One store after another, I only saw bagless vacs on the display. I wanted one that used disposable bags. After visiting a fourth big-box store, a customer service rep in the vacuum aisle suggested I try Stark's. He said they had everything for vacuums. He wasn't kidding. The Shark vacuum my man researched and got for the family worked terrific, for months. Then all of a sudden poof it stopped working. Dropped in on this shop one afternoon, thinking I would leave the vacuum and hope for the best. I was more than surprised. Not only did the shop repair it right away, they did it for free as I understand they do the unclogging of any vacuum you may bring in to them. We did not even buy our vacuum here!!! The super nice gentleman not only repaired our machine, but he helped me take it out to the vehicle as I had my babe in tow. I have been using Starks for almost 20 years and as my needs (and homes) have changed, I keep going back. Starks offers a large array of products that meets most budgets and has a staff that is knowledgeable about the technical side of the products. Life gets messy with dogs, kids, and crappy rainy weather that drags in detritus all fall long. I want to keep my house as dirt/hair free as possible with the least amount of effort required so I am happy to invest in a quality product that will give me 10+ years of great results from a company that stands behind the products AND services them vs. buying a cheap option that breaks down after a few years. Even the employees that are not as technical are still fantastic when it comes to customer service. In a world where most of my shopping is done online, some things simply cannot be replaced by Amazon especially when it's only paying a marginally higher amount. read more
