Brought my daughter to Jenene about a year ago. Super expensive and she did an awful job. My kid wanted a few vibrant hot pink highlights and the rest of her hair dark (she's naturally got brown hair). Not only did it take her longer than it should have, the highlights we're all chunked up on one side, she over processed it, and whatever pink color she put on literally lasted two washes - I had to go to the beauty store and buy something and apply it myself. Terrible experience. Never again. I literally could've done a better job myself. My daughter was pissed. Do you see all these hipsters with their funky cuts here? Do you? Look at that color! Look at that style! So even having known Rebecca for ages and NEEDING to find a good stable stylist here in Alameda, I honestly couldn't see myself getting my hair did here. I figured my request would be far too vanilla, and either she would feel uninspired or I would end up with something I didn't want. But a twist of fate led me to Rebecca, and I owe it to her - nee, to the WORLD! (or at least Alameda) - to set the record straight. First, it IS a hip little salon. Cozy, fun, eclectic and inviting. The interior brought me back to my twenty something days in SF when I was much cooler than I am now. I was offered a beverage of my choice, and I settled in. A little nervous, I brought a picture and asked if she could pull it off... and she did. But what I really loved is that even if I had asked for something very simple, Rebecca gave just a hint of an edge to it, and has continued to do so with each and every cut and color. And we're not talking a streak of blue or purple... more like, just a little more texture where it needs to be. Or my highlights... just simple highlights... she did such an amazing job! I actually had someone approach me after having seen me across a huge ballroom and ask who did my highlights. I don't know if the ladies feel its a compliment to say that they can do "normal" do's, but it is certainly meant as a compliment. Rebecca is not a one trick pony. BEST HAIRCUT EVER. OK, so I was going to go to another salon in Alameda, but then I was randomly talking to some strangers in front of a coffee shop and I said something about how I want to cut my hair short all punk rock style to get rid of all my dyed-black hair (I dyed my hair black for like a decade but it's just time to be au natural, you dig?), and then I'd let my hair grow all long and free like an Earth momma. These dudes I was talking to were like, "You want something edgy and cool? Don't go here, go to Starbaby" and I was like, "hmmm." Then, a minute later, a woman sitting nearby with an infant gestured to me to come over to her and so I did and she said she overheard what I was saying and I should go to Starbaby. Well, hmmmmmmm! You know what they say about 50 million Elvis fans, right? So I called Starbaby and got an appointment with Rebecca and she was just amazing. She understood just what I wanted. I told her I didn't want to have to use any product in my hair or blow dry it or anything and she totally worked with that. It's a really cool cut -- short, uneven bangs, longer tresses in the front and pretty doggone short in the back. I'm putting a picture up, I look cool. It's too bad you can't see the back of the cut but it's hard to take a selfie of the back of one's own head. Trust me, it looks rad. I will definitely be returning. FYI, I usually hate every hair cut, and when I get home from them I usually pull out my scissors and "fix" it. I've only had one person before I liked enough to return to, and he mysteriously dropped off the face of the planet (if anyone knows what became of Saturno in suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, please let me know, OK?). I am so glad I found Mary Rose at Starbaby Studio! I had been going to the same stylist for all of my adult life and didn't think I was ever going to have to find someone else to do my hair, but when distance and other problems arose, I found myself a new resident to the east bay and with a major color correction on my hands! I've always enjoyed dyeing my hair funky colors and have been known for having eccentric hairstyles. I am very particular since I have worked in the hair industry for a few years now and have seen my fair share of botched hair do's. I did my research and finally booked a color consultation with Mary Rose. At the consultation, she eased my worries about the whole process which involved a complete color strip, bleach, toner, and all over color once again, PLUS a whole new haircut. We went over all of the steps and she was very attentive the whole time while making sure to answer any of the questions that I had. She definitely did an amazing job and I could not be happier with the outcome. She not only did she do an amazing color correction but she also gave me the best haircut I've ever had. i have never been to the same hairstylist twice until i met jenene at starbaby. she always has great ideas for bringing out the best in my hair: from the cut and styling to the products to use. i should add that i am super low maintenance. i'm the type of person who you will regularly see with a ponytail or bun. jenene takes all of this into account so that i can have wisps of hair hanging if i have my hair up, or layered and super cute if i want to get dressed up and have my hair down. i love every haircut/hairstyle she gives me. go to jenene. she's the best! read more

Oh man, oh man, oh man. Am I glad I found Mary Rose and Starbaby! I'm new to Alameda (and the West Coast) and was looking for a cool, relaxed place that still gives great cuts. I specifically didn't want to end up at some posh, nose-in-the-air "trendy" place, but I didn't want to get a boring ol' cut, either. I decided to try out Starbaby because the Yelp reviews were so positive. Thanks for pointing me to the right place, Yelpers! Mary Rose gave me a fantastic cut, which is worth the five stars alone. She was really attentive to my hair type and also kept asking me if I was comfortable with what we were doing, maybe we should try a more mellow cut first, etc. We also had a great conversation -- something I usually dread when getting my hair cut, but chatting with Mary Rose was like chatting with an old friend. The vibe of the studio is AWESOME -- artsy, but not pretentious at all. Best of all, she never tried to upsell me on anything. I wanted a lighter ombré look and I shown this pic (girl with long hair) to the hair stylist. It took 3 hrs to get this ombre done and it looked nothing like the picture. She made my hair darker (see pic of the back of my hair- gross!!!) than I came in with. So very unhappy. I've been to a lot of stylist, and Mary Rose is by far the best. She is very experienced, knowledgeable, attentive, organized and tidy. I made the jump to platinum blonde and it looks amazing! We had a consultation where she taught me about the processes and made a plan to do it gradually. She planned this whole thing like a military mission, with exit strategies and work arounds in case something went wrong. My hair was a little brassy at one point, because of some warm highlights I had done a while back, but she tested a few things and figured out how to tone it out. She also offers to let you come back if you're not happy with your cut so she can fix anything you're not pleased with. I haven't had to do this, but it's nice that she offers. Mary Rose is magic. I'm not kidding, the lady is MAGIC. What she was able to do with my hair (and my husband's!) is nothing short of fantastic. I have fine hair and wanted a real change. Mary Rose wasn't afraid to get out the scissors and razor, get her hands in my hair and give me a rockin' short A-line cut with a killer red-burgundy color. Although I was initially shocked to see so much hair on the floor, the cut was exactly what I wanted. And the color looks so cool in the sun. Mary Rose is talented, skilled and really knows her stuff. Plus, she makes you feel like you've been her friend for years. My appointment was at 7:30 on a Friday night. While my color was processing, Mary Rose gave my husband a really great haircut. His hair is curly and can be difficult, but she took her time and he looks awesome. How nice is that? But here's the real kicker: I was shopping yesterday and had a pair of Lululemon tights on in the dressing room. Instead of looking at the tights, I couldn't stop admiring my adorable haircut from multiple angles in the 3-way mirror. It really is that damn good.
