IF YOU ARE TRANS OR NON BINARY I DONT SUGGEST THIS SALON Unfortunately I feel the need to share my sub-par experience at this salon. I'm non binary. I have an undercut with long wavy hair on top. I was looking for someone to cut layers into my long hair. And if they were able, to also trim down my undercut(no fade, nothing fancy). I saw that this salon was queer woman owned so I figured I would be easily understood in my desire for an androgynous hair style. I also found the styliest Jillian Pedon was deva certified and I had never spent the money for a deva cut so I wanted to try it. She was kind and nice to deal with but she didn't understand when I said I was growing out a few hairs at my temple to suit my hair line better. I think she assumed because she was reading me as being feminine that I wanted to hide where my hairline dipped back. This is why it's important for stylist to be well versed and understanding that not everyone is trying to look hyper masc or hyper femme! So she trimmed the hairs I've been growing out to try to incorporate into my long hair, to 'cover' where my hairline dips back, the exact opposite of what I wanted. She did fine on the long hair but it was not a $100 hair cut worth. She just cut layers into it. Then she tried to buzz my undercut and did a good job not getting any of my long hairs by leaving it patchy and thick along the edge. She clearly didn't know how to do clipper cuts and should have said so before beginning. I had my partner fix it when I got home. Not to mention there was a man next to me seemingly complaining about DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) during the hair cut. That is not what I go to a queer salon and pay $100 for a haircut for. Over all, very dissapointed. The layers in the long hair are fine but I could have paid my friend back home $40 to do that, got my undercut buzzed properly with my line maintained and had a much better experience. Guess I fell for rainbow capitalism. My bad. read more

Emma helped take my hair from purple to platinum blonde! Which was the boldest move I've ever made in terms of hair color and styles. She's a talented colorist who understands how to keep hair healthy and soft during processing and her pixie cut skills are peerless. Every time I walk out the salon I feel like a cross-between a gothy Marilyn Monroe and a short Anna Nicole. I never knew I would like being a blonde as much as I do -- and I have Emma to thank for getting for unleashing my inner blonde ambition. She's flexible and understanding about scheduling and cares about her costumers' experience. She really wants to make sure her clients are getting what they want for her and is honest about what she can accomplish in a session and what she can't. She's incredibly talented when it comes to hair science and I highly recommend her. She's also fun, friendly, hilarious, and a genuinely kind and curious person with a wealth of wisdom. this review is for JILL: I'm a dedicated full-time mom. This was my first outting to really pamper myself and spend good money on a new look. I havent had a hair cut in nearly two years. It was time. I was a little concerned walking into the appointment- she was 30 minutes behind and the lady ahead of me was dissatisfied with how her hair turned out. I also noticed a distinct coloring line at the back of her hair, like a bleach blotch if you will. I didn't want to be rude and it is REALLY hard to get out being a full time mom, and so I moved forward with the appointment, entrusting Jill with my hair/look revival-- based on her years and years of experience. Color and cut took a total of SIX HOURS. Why you may ask? I had very long hair but she decided to COLOR my hair FIRST before cutting, though I wanted a shorter cut. She started out by "painting" bleach onto my hair, but folded the foils upward, causing the bleach heavy bottoms to bleed to the top. I had to instruct her to go back and cover those areas with foil so it wouldn't bleed. When she placed color on top, not only did it have to be done TWICE, she messed it up completely. The first round it turned ORANGE. the second round it was a full on highlighted head of red hair (when I asked for more subtle reddened bottoms). It was awful. It looked like a did a full highlight and it grew out a month. It had no purpose, no swag, no style. The reason why I had so much red was because all that bleach bled into the root area of my hair. She should've done it correctly the first time. Proceed to the cut: I asked for a longer a-line bob. She delivered a flat bob. Uneven. It was not fun flirty and sexy. It was meh. It was mom hair gone wrong. She did her cut the first time and I told her I really don't see the angle, and so she went at it a second time and still failed to deliver. By that time, I was hungry- my husband had to deliver fast food, and we called it a night by 8:20pm. She said she was too tired to continue and I said it's fine. I booked another appointment with her on the spot to have the look fixed. But then I realized.......she spent six plus hours on my hair and it ended up looking like this? And she didn't even color and cut my hair correctly... and I had to instruct her on not making the bleach bleed through my process? I am certain she cannot deliver the look I was hoping for. I went to another studio and had it fixed. And paid 250.00 to get a color correction and re-cut. This studio told me it was uneven in several places and her technique was poor in terms of coloring. I reached out to Jill to see if I could at least get a partial refund to off-set the cost and got a rude response. She told me that I wasnt respectful of her experinece by asking her to not let bleach bleed into my hair? See the message below for yourself and stay away. read more

Celeste is a hair goddess. I came to her with the fuzzy remnants of a horrible cut (from somewhere else) that looked hideous and had wrecked my hair. My DIY color was faded out and needed major help. Celeste worked miracles on me -- and never once scolded me, lectured me about my DIY hair habits, or tried to get me to spend money I don't have. She gave me beautiful, rich color that makes my skin look perfect -- and won't grow out with an old-lady line at the roots. She gave me a cut that completely rejuvenated my hair. It looks beautiful but effortless, as though I just woke up looking that good. Isn't that what we all want? Best part: Celeste totally understands that I am not very good at styling my own hair and I don't have much money to spend at the salon -- and that doesn't bother her at all. She gave me a cut that does most of the work for me and will grow out beautifully. And she gave me a color that is rich/brilliant on the underneath layers but closer to my natural/roots color on the top layer, so I won't have to constantly touch up the roots. I've gotten tons of compliments -- even from complete strangers -- and they just keep coming. One of my friends who lives 150 miles away (Chico) loved my hair so much she made an appointment with Celeste to do her hair as well. I was so hoping that this is my new go to salon especially because I read so many good things about Darcy. I really liked Darcy - she was fun and nice and I felt very comfortable with her. I think that got into my way of logical thinking. I paid $265 for cut, balayage and toning. I asked Darcy how this price has been calculated but never got a clear answer: 'Prices can change once in the salon'. Help me do the math here: A haircut is $55 so the color is $210? Wait, I need to clarify: I even would kind of understand this price if I did get a full coloration but I already had the color. She just wanted to improve the transition. Comparison: At a salon that is marked $$$ on Yelp I paid $170 for full coloration of long hair, cut and color for eyebrows. It was not just the price - I really don't mind spending big bucks if it's a perfect result. As soon as I was home and tried out my new hair I noticed that the right part of the bangs was significantly longer, I got a lot of choppy layers even though I said I don't like noticeable layers and even after the correction the bangs were still not even. End of story: I think I got a big "noobi-surcharge" here and I unfortunately don't feel like trying it again to see if this was just a one time thing. read more

I got a cut from Darcy, who is a very sweet woman. However, the cut I got was one of the worst I've ever gotten, besides the one I gave myself in high school. She didn't follow any of the things I asked for. And, the layers are extremely choppy and chunky. And, NO I didn't go back and ask her to fix it (like my friend suggested). No. No. Nope! Will not ever come back to this place. 3 weeks post haircut with Celeste and I had to make another appointment with ANOTHER hairstylist to address the mullet on my head. The haircut I received was NOT blended at all! The top layers were shaggy, while the bottom portion of my hair was bluntly cut. There was no balance in between the layers...you know...where normal layers are supposed to lay in harmony with one another. It truly looked like a mullet. Yes, I did contact Celeste to address the mullet looking shag, however, she stated that it wasn't due to the fact that she utilized a razor on my super fine, bone straight Asian hair. But rather - the previous dude who colored my hair. Great way to place blame. I decided to contact another salon to fix my hair instead. PS - if you're wondering why I didn't complain the day of my haircut: it was curled and styled immediately after by Celeste. I am now wondering if styling to hide the hideous cut. $95 wasted....on a mullet.........!!!! :( read more

Little did I know that "mama-hair" was a postpartum affliction I should prepare myself for. Luckily, Ashley Rose is a pro at saving new mom's from their poor grooming state. She gave me an excellent cut that not only actually "works with my face" (I'd previously thought that was a load of hooey) but also works with my new lifestyle - I can style it in five minutes flat! I booked a second appointment as soon as we were done. I will most definitely be back. The salon is super cute and cozy. I was slightly hesitant to share my discovery b/c now booking an appt will be more difficult... but, oh well, the secret's been unleashed. Susan is such a great hostess - the cappuccino she served with whip cream and a cookie, followed by a refreshing root beer was a small indication of her regard for her clients. She had a clear idea of what I (vaguely) described, and made my hair look 10x better than what I envisioned. I love, love, love my haircut. After reading these fine reviews, I decided to give Orange a whirl. I was tired of trying to find parking at my usual Oakland salon, and Orange is within walking distance to my house. Susan was great, and seemed to have a good balance of taking my wishes and her opinions into consideration. She chastised me for coloring my hair by myself (what stylist doesn't?), but offered some suggestions for saving money on future self-coloring without destroying my hair. Nice! After living with my new haircut for a few days, I felt that the bangs were not quite right and scheduled a re-shaping appointment. This wound up taking some doing, as Susan and the scheduler had a little trouble working things out. But once I got back in (about a week and a half later) Susan worked her miracles and now I'm thrilled with the cut. You've got to appreciate a stylist with a dedication to making the customer happy. I always say I'm going to write a review for various things, but so rarely do, until today. Just had a haircut earlier by Darcy, and was/am blown away! I found this place via yelp, after a (long) string of unsuccessful attempts at finding a new hairstylist. Of course I've seen this place f/ the outside 100x, but it's even cuter inside! I have very thick hair that I like getting thinned out and cut in various ways at times, but even the simplest cuts/colors have been messed up on more than one occasion (by supposed great stylists)...until now!!! Darcy cut my hair to a layered bob and it was exactly what I wanted! She was patient with me and all my details, made sure I liked what was happening (and had no problem when I asked for it a tad shorter after she'd already begin); and on top of her amazing professional skills w/ the scissors- she was so fun to chat with! I honestly felt like I was talking with a friend. There were no awkward silences, no need for reading through magazines to stay entertained. It was a great, comfortable, and uber cute environment. I'm elated with my hair- and having worked in the hair industry for seven years in my early 20's, I was extra happy to even learn some new styling tips f/ her! I have been to Celeste for 3 appointments now and each time I go, she really listens to my feedback and gives me exactly what I like or easily shows me what she recommends. I am not terribly picky about my hair in many ways (as I know some ladies can be) but something always feels "off" when the hair ain't right. And, Celeste makes it perfect naturally. DARCY!!! She is a miracle worker!!! Four months ago, I was platinum blonde. After having a terrible experience bleaching my hair at a salon, I started doing it myself. Things were going fine for a year. I had my blonde hair, my wallet was fatter, no fried hair. Four months ago, I decided I wanted to go back au natural. I knew that there was no way I could do that myself. One of my friends recommended Darcy so I booked an appointment and drove to Orange from SF. Sooooo worth it!!! Darcy: 1) told me I had been ruining my hair with my whack bleach job, 2) somehow saved my hair from eminent death, 3) gave me an ombre with my EXACT hair color. I have no idea how she was able to match an exact blend with the little bit of roots coming in. Four months later, my ombre is still fabulous, I still get compliments, and I haven't needed any retouch. She was absolutely fantastic. Easy to get along with (which says a lot when you are sitting in a chair for 3 hours), and an absolute professional. My hair is Hollywood. Darcy works miracles. Period. Need color? GO TO Darcy!!! One of the many annoying things about relocating every few years is finding new people to do your hair, eyebrows, facials, etc. Fortunately I got really lucky when I found Orange Salon! Ashley did a fantastic job on my hair! It's been a few weeks and it still looks amazing. I barely have to do anything, just blow dry my bangs and let the rest air dry and somehow it always looks like I meticulously styled it. I'm so happy with the haircuts I've been getting from Celeste at Orange Salon. A friend recommended me a few months ago after getting a terrible haircut in the city with a woman who cut chunks out of my hair with a razor saying "veeeery sexy" the whole time. Awful! Celeste fixed the disaster and since then has been giving me fabulous cuts. Most recently she helped me come up with a style with layered bangs that looks fantastic. I have curly hair so it's hard to find a stylist who knows how to cut curly hair properly. So many hairdressers want to give you styles that only work if you straightened your hair every day. Celeste worked with me to come up with a style that took advantage of my curls. So many hairdressers wouldn't have bothered. Rebecca at Orange did an awesome job on my hair. She took my boring long hair and totally modernized it in a way that suited my personality. She did a great job of showing me how to style my new cut. I'm able to make it look (almost) like I went to the salon in less than 5 minutes. I haven't been this happy with a haircut in a long time. The salon itself was funky and chic, but without all the pretension you would normally find in that type of salon. Rebecca was super friendly and easy to talk to and took her time in evaluating my hair. 7/15/2012 Rebecca is no longer at Orange, but she has been my go-to stylist for the past year. I trust her so much that I give her complete carte blanche to do whatever she wants with my hair. Usually, I don't stick with a stylist for very long because I like a lot of variety and I don't like getting the same haircut every time. Each time I see Rebecca she adds a new twist to my haircut and shows me a new way to style it that I can replicate at home. Darcy is wonderful! She recently did my color and chopped about five inches off. It looks exactly like what I asked for. I showed her multiple pictures and really felt like she listened to what I wanted. I told her I needed low maintenance with a baby at home, but I didn't want to look boring. She used balayage to give me perfectly placed natural highlights. A month later, my color still looks so good. Nothing but good things to say about Orange salon, and more specifically, stylist Celeste. I was referred by a friend after living in Alameda for just under a year. Needed a fresh cut and a new style after letting my hair become damaged, dried out and breaking, and just needing a new style. Celeste was careful to communicate with me about what I was looking for, styles I'd had in the past, what my daily activities and regimen were like. She explained what our options were (what we could and could not do given the damage, how much might have to come off BUT where good quality was still evident) as well as what the progress would likely look like over the coming months (those challenging "in-between" growth periods, patience while damage was being repaired (as I planned to take care of that on my own), etc. She carefully did the cut and we discussed what was happening, how I liked it, her next recommendation as my hair took shape. She was caring and competent as she ensured we agreed at all times. The result was an easy to manage, healthy, sassy and attractive cut. I have gone back on multiple occasions to have my style managed by Celeste as it grows back in and she is consistently creative and knowledgeable about where it's headed, what I need to do next, what to recommend for styling tools and products that will work best for me at home (staying very conscious of budget), etc. Of note, since I have also seen Celeste's portfolio and met some of her other clients: Celeste does a good job with straight and curly hair, short and long cuts AND is knowledgeable in care of different ethnic hair. I went to this salon for the first time the other day and I had my hair cut by Jillian. I told her I wanted long bangs (a change for me after months and months of long layers), and she nailed it. I've gotten nice cuts from other stylists in the past, but not all of them have felt like "me." Hi all, It is way past time that I updated my review and I sincerely apologize to Celeste because she made things right quite a few months ago. She called me because she does care about reviews. Honestly she never got my messages when I tried to get in touch and I believe that because I changed to an android phone. Anyhow, I want to recind (sp?) My comments, and change up to a 5,star. I took my 15 year old daughter for cut and ombre color with Darcy last evening. My daughter was nervous about getting her hair cut. Darcy made it so fun and she did an amazing job! My daughter and I were all thrilled with the results. Darcy also provided a ton of great tips on taking care of her hair. We are hooked!!! read more

If I could give Susan six or seven stars, I would. I really wish I could see her, because not only is she an AMAZING stylist/colorist, but she's a great person. I have a girl-crush on her, for sure. Nevermind that she can cut, color and style like nobody's business. Above all that, she makes you feel right at home - offers you a cold or hot drink and maybe a sweet. She is interested in you as a person, and is always there to give you her perspective (which is usually spot-on). I know she's very much in-demand, as she should be. But, really try to get in there and have Susan take some time to make you look and feel beautiful. read more
