Service is great! The employees I have had the pleasure of talking to have been helpful and friendly. I know almost nothing about wine and usually just buy it as gifts for other people. I know I can go into Starrs and they will help me make the right selection. Also- I went into Starrs last night (around 6pm) looking for a specific bottle of wine. They did not have it in stock, so they gave me the phone numbers of other wine shops in the area to call and see if they had it. The other stores did not, so John (the owner) made a few calls for me, and today he gave me a call to let me know he was able to get a bottle of what I wanted and it was waiting for me at the store. No, Bud, I'm a real person. I'm the guy that selected a bottle of Black Maple Hill and when I was at the register you grabbed it out of my hands and said you were saving it for one of your good customers. I'm also the guy that came into your store for a bottle of Dom Perignon to celebrate the birth of my son and was called a rookie for selecting it. I'm also the one that got my wine selections criticized, even though I knew exactly what I had in my hand and was buying it at someone else's request. I'm also the one that waited by your grim food counter in the back for someone to help me, then had to go find someone just to be told that most of the stuff in there was "past it's prime." I could go on......... I lived by your store for 13 years and frequented it just to support local small business. You should know exactly who I am, but I doubt you would. I don't know John Parker at all, just admire his shop and how they treat customers. Instead of making this review worse for you, accept the criticism, change your attitude, clean up the store up and treat customers with the respect. I think Bud has been smoking some bad bud with his recent outbreak of borderline psychotic, paranoid and delusional comments that he's apparently been leaving all over his yelp account in the past 24 hours from what I can tell. Lets assess the spirit of your comment before we breakdown the obvious here. Rather than faulting the business across the street or this almost year old review that your only NOW acknowledging, think inward. True or false did you have the ingredient list on this product 11 months ago? True or false are you really concerned with the business and its perception cause did you know your only just now looking at these online reviews? You responded to a review posted on 4/30/2012 just now (5/25/2015) as well as several others. Why the sudden onset of online bullying? When I wrote my review I wrote an honest review of both the product and level of customer service that I received when I walked in the door. In the past I have changed a review when the business manager approached me about my comments. They wanted to "know" why I had commented the way I did, they learned from it, actually did what I suggested and thanked me for it. I was a repeat customer and immediately changed my review. This is how feedback works in a SUCCESSFUL business! Yelp is designed to help leave reviews and feedback, this feedback is something businesses have to pay allot of money to acquire. You get it on yelp for FREE! And instead of taking the advice to heart or actually wanting to access my points you come back a year after they've been made and try to cyber bull me? Call me callous? Try to hint that I'm the competitor next door (which by the way I didn't know their was a competitor so close but I'm going to check them out now and I hope they do have awesome dip). How could you not take your reviews more seriously? Not having ingredients listed is a serious health issue, not to mention a violation. I wasn't asking you for your family's secret formula or ratios, just a run down of what's in it so it doesn't murder my friend. It's easier to have the ingredients listed on your product than my friends' blood on your hands, wouldn't you agree? What is even more nuts is that I WAS a customer of yours. I bought bottles of wine for my colleagues and came in there every few weeks to get the starrs dip for my own enjoyment. I even noticed that after leaving this comment on here (which again is from a year ago!) you started listing the ingredients on the containers of dip sometimes. After your cyber bully attack on my review I can tell you I will never come back to your store. Except if you're having a bankruptcy sale and I'll see what the bank has repo'd at the auction. Shame on you for hurting your business this way. Shame on you for making me have to find a new wine mart. Shame on you for making it so difficult to be a customer. Starr's is a great independent wine shoppe! Not only is the wine selection good have you tried the fromage or fresh seafood? My wife loves their cheese and is always offered a sample. The fresh seafood arrives on Friday and their newsletter highlights what is available - the shrimp from the Gulf is a favorite! talkative and knowledgeable owner. decent sales ($18 buffalo trace when i was in). and a wall of good spirits. seriously, some higher end stuff there you can't always see. i'm not sure about their sampling policies, but for a small fee or if you're a friend of the owner/frequent customer it seems you can try some good things including their pappy's. reading through other reviews, it seems there is some bizzare gaming of the system going on? I have no ties to any liquor stores and am disappointed when yelp is not completely unbiased or reliable. If you want to keep your head down, maybe buy your usual, and not talk to anybody this may not be the place for you. Bigger or shadier stores are more likely to ignore you. But I see these real conversations as a service though one obviously not everyone enjoys. Go, check it out. I guess the liquor store experience could be weird in a state where you can buy it anywhere. Starr's has a wonderful selection of wine, beer, and unique food products. Check out the cheese selection. It's amazing. My favorite treat: McClure's spicy pickles and spicy pickle potato chips. The staff is educated and reputable. Good resource for any occasion. Worth the visit. read more

This place used to only serve catered parties, but is now open three times a week for dinner (THU-SAT). We have been here several times and always enjoyed it. The menu changes slightly. The entrees we had were always good. Some of the best in town. The chef specializes in great wine-based sauces for the entrees, so be sure to savor them. The steaks and fish we had were very good. The chicken marsala is a regular on the menu and excellent. People elaborated on the wine selection, so also be ready for a great experience there. The first time we were here, the flourless chocolate cake was amazing. One of the best we had. The next time it was OK. The next, excellent again. So expect some volatility there. The pot the creme was always superb. The place is nice and cozy. The owner is interested and caring. He treated us well and seemed concerned when our desserts were less than expected. The servers were also nice. The crowd, for some reason, tends to be on the older side. But, maybe Yelp can change that. We are leaving town, and will surely check out the place again when we are here for a visit. read more

I stopped in there this afternoon to pick up a bottle of wine. No greeting when I walked in and no one could be bothered to ask if I needed help. Woman at the register with dyed black hair fits right in there. No hi how are you or even a thank you. They act like they are doing you a favor by letting you buy wine there. I ate at the recently opened restaurant inside Starr's last night, because we had tried some of their take out food from the deli at a NYE party and had to check it out. This is definitely a place to take your time and enjoy the food and wine. Since Starr's is a wine store, there are quite a few nicely priced bottles and half bottles to choose from. The food and service were upscale, however, my only complaint is that the atmosphere is a little lacking. I have heard that they don't allow small children in the dining room which I think is nice when you're going out to enjoy a very nice dinner. My steak was perfectly cooked, and my husbands home made french onion soup was rich and delicious. read more

I cannot give this place anything but outstanding, great reviews. everyone that works here is extremely nice. The crown jewel, for me, is John Nash. This genteman is a nice, knowledgeable, modest person that knows more about wine than anyone with whom I've ever spoken. Their selection is mind blowing and I am betting John himself helps pick out the wines. Their scotch selection is great. They have great cheese selections along with seafood. The following review was removed three times by Yelp and I'm re-posting and will continue to do so until I am totally banned. Take that YELP! I've been shopping at Starr's for years, mostly for specialty foods. However, more recently, I've been stocking up on their house smoked salmon and highly rate the smoked meats that they serve in the adjacent restaurant. They also have a great selection of chocolate. I stop there once or twice a week to stock up on salmon and chocolate. This restaurant is now my favorite BBQ joint. Although, it's more of a smoked meat and fish joint where you add the sauce. I highly recommend the brisket and the Carolina pulled pork. The wine and liquor prices are competitive and there are always specials (sign up for the emails) and the staff is very helpful with recommendations. Regarding the negative review from the Michigan nose picker, I went to Parker's Table after reading that review since I hadn't been there and didn't know it even existed which is likely why they paid someone from Michigan to write a negative review of Starr's. Anyway, the place is out of the way, they have lots of wine with pretty labels and cute names, but nothing I have ever drunk and I've had a few. If you're looking for something that you plan to drink yourself, try Starr's or the Wine and Cheese Place. If you're looking for an unknown wine with a pretty label and/or a cute name for a gift, then Parker's Table might work. I'm sure the staff there is friendly as the reviewer says but the ambiance is like a hospital gift shop that sells wine (St. Mary's is next door). You also have to feed a parking meter when you go to Parker's. That trip cost me a dime. Furthermore, that review should be removed, the reviewer banned, and Parker's chastised. read more

New Mexican-American restaurant in our hood! Yay! The carnitas were rad.

I absolutely love Starrs! First of all they have great wine tastings and it's free! And just this Saturday, I went to Starrs to pick up some jumbo gulf shrimp and found myself stumbling into a FREE champagne tasting of 6-7 different champagnes of $40 and up. We went on a Friday when they have tastings with food pairings for just $20 (might be different depending on event), reservations required. The food was sooo good and they were very generous in their pour and food portion. We each had 3 whites and 3 reds and they came back and gave us more of our favorite white at the end of the night. They had filet mignon samples and other quality food. They have a good selections of spirits and everything is reasonably priced. The items I have bought are usually a dollar or two less than other places. Their seafood is also very good quality. They had the biggest gulf shrimps I've ever seen and it made for a great dinner and was cheaper than other places. I also love their smoked salmon! I don't frequently have their coffee, but remember it being good the times I've had it. My favorite thing about the store are the people. EVERYONE is extremely helpful and provide excellent service. The owner has provided great recommendations for wine selections that have worked perfectly for my taste. He is knowledgable and just seems like an interesting guy. A+ folks. read more

I never write for yelp, but when I was on here looking up the business hours for Starr's (which side note is sadly not open on Sundays) and saw some of the craziness written on here I had to make a post. Starr's is awesome. The first time we came the owner grabbed us and gave us multiple free samples of his house-made pesto, dips, and chocolates. We've been impressed with the wine selection and have noticed (but definitely have not been able to partake in) an large selection of very high end wines. They have good sales and an wide beer selection as well. They also roast their own coffee that makes the whole store smell fantastic, have a very expansive cheese selection, and sell fresh seafood on Fridays. Its a great neighborhood establishment and I highly recommend it. I would also recommend trying it for yourself rather than rely on the few long ranting reviews that seem to be written remarkably similarly. read more

I love this place. These guys are so helpful and nice, I wouldn't buy wine anywhere else. When you tell them what you're serving, and your price range they'll have a wine for you in seconds carry it to the counter for you, and wrap it carefully. Don't overlook the cheese counter in back. They have the best Stilton we've had in years. Lots of other yummy treats like their home made dips, meats, olives, everything you need for appetizers. I haven't eaten at the smokehouse but honestly don't understand why this place isn't busier when I'm in there. read more

Though this establishment has a great selection of well priced alcohol it's the environment and staff that sets it over the edge. Patrons are not bothered unless they need help, in which case the staff is well informed and gives good advice. It often feels like your own personal liquor store. Great place to shop for wine and spirits. I need some wine for the holidays and told the owner (assume the knowledgeable man helping me is the owner) the general kinds of wine I prefer (Rioja and Sancerre) and he introduced me to wines I would likely enjoy at a variety of price points, made recommendations regarding value, and I ended up buying six bottles, which should get me through several holiday events. I love this wine store. They have lovely, congenial and generous wine tastings and I always leave with something new to me. Their cheese selection is outstanding: they may not have a huge variety, but most of what they offer is out-of-this world good. Plus you can get 20% off with coupons they email to you each week. It's the only store where I have been able to get my favorite aperitifs, Cynar and Punt-e-mes. The deli now has fresh fish on weekends. Wow! Their restaurant is one of my favorite places to eat, nice and quiet with unpretentious fresh, good food. Recently tried their to-die-for lobster pizza - just an excellent gourmet pizza with every characteristic I want. The fresh fish dishes were very fine and the portions ample. You have to have plenty of time as they run the place with very few people, but it's also a nice place to sit and talk as you wait for the courses. The wine list consists of the whole store: you buy what you want in there and there is no corkage fee. We had such a good time there last Friday night and we were served very well, congenially and considerately. read more
