We were in Olympia for a visit to The Evergreen State College and since we were in town, a stop at State & Central was mandatory. We've eaten here several times over the years, this was the first time we eat dinner here. Fam. Let me tell you, the very reasonable lunch size portions? They're significantly bigger on the dinner menu. Almost disturbingly so Being able to get a selection of interesting regional beers is always a draw, tonight was no exception. And the pretty good lunch menu is expanded for the dinner hour - as well as the portion sizes being expanded. I ordered the fish and chips, my partner ordered the bar steak (which was New York strip), and her daughter ordered the salmon burger with fries. Because it was a special, we also got a giant order of poutine. Despite being in almost at closing, the service was absolutely spectacular. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We very nearly had the place to ourselves, so the overall vibe was very homey and welcoming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] As noted, the portions were enormous. I opted to finish my fish at the expense of the chips. My partner wound up with a significant take home portion as did her daughter. Couldn't possibly have been happier about our decision to stop in. Since we seem to have a new Greener in the family, I'm sure that we will be in Olympia significantly more frequently. My daughter lives within walking distance to this restaurant for almost a year but we had never stopped in until now. Our bad! It's actually a solid pub grub. We walked in at about 5:30 on a Thursday and it was busy but still had a few open tables. We were greeted warmly by our server. She recommended the blackberry margarita and we both said yes please! It was delicious. I got the Juicy Lucy and my kid got the Chili Burger which is open faced. They both were pretty good. The total before tip came to $74. We arrived here after visiting a small convention and were pretty hungry. We decided on State and Central as my boyfriend had been craving burgers so I looked to see what was available. This was also Mother's Day weekend so I wanted to pick a spot that wasn't too crowded. As we arrived, street parking was almost tough but we were able to find a spot nearby. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We saw that they had outdoor dining available too, which is good to know but we decided to dine inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were given menus and water by different waitresses which was interesting. We never really knew who to call over and they didn't really come back after dropping off the food. We placed our order which consisted of: a boozy peach iced tea, juicy lucy and fish po boy. I wasn't a huge fan of the ginger sesame dressing/sauce that came with the fish po boy. The sandwich also felt apart pretty quickly which was disappointing too. However, the rest of the sandwich was decent. Now the juicy lucy is definitely worth getting as it was absolutely seasoned to perfection and the addition of the egg and bacon was phenomenal. This was both of our first times trying it and we look forward to finding more places that offer this amazing burger. What a lovely place! I came here for lunch with a friend. She ordered a salad and I had a salmon sandwich. Salad portion was huge! My sandwich was delicious. And I haven't eaten this kind of French fries in a while. They were freshly cooked with a perfect crunch. I got dinner here one night while in Olympia working for a few days. Inside is really cute, it reminded me of our neighborhood pub but more modern. The menu has decent, lots of good choices. It was prettty good, I was expecting more cheese to ooze out but I really like the amount I got cus sometimes it's a bit too overwhelming in flavor. Service was really good. We found our way here to have dinner on a Saturday Night after it was taking too long to find parking for some other restaurant candidates in Downtown Olympia. Parking was a bit tight for this place, as there were only three diagonal "Compact" stalls and no room to back out and leave via another way; instead, you have to back out completely on to Central St in order to leave the parking lot. Our party arrived before the dinner rush (around 5-5:30 pm) and were attended to and seated promptly. The place was probably more than half full at this point. There were three different items from the menu that we tried: bar steak, cheeseburger and fries, and poutine fries. For the bar steak, our request was to have it prepared medium rare. What we ended up with was definitely rare, as only the outer layer was charred and everything else was deeply red inside. The steak was also over-salted, and as another reviewer mentioned, it also had a large amount of gristle and fat. The cheeseburgers and fries were just OK. One person in our party ate everything while another couldn't bring themselves to finish it. The french fries were more of a standout than the burger patty or brioche bun in terms of texture and taste. The poutine fries, utilizing the aforementioned delicious french fries as a base, turned out to be the best plate of the evening. When the server came by to ask us how the food was, we were forthcoming about the bar steak and our disappointment at so many of this main entree's shortcomings. With credit due to State & Central and our server, we received about a 15-20% discount on our total bill for the disappointing outcome with the steak. Depending on what you order, this place could be worthy of a 4-star (out of 5) drinking and dining experience, but for us, it ended up falling right in the middle. read more

Every time I drive by this place I take note that I have to stop by and try it. Finally did and was not disappointed. Sis and I weren't all that hungry, so we split the salad and it was a surprisingly large portion. We also split a smash burger and it was the perfect amount of food. Finally we split the Dutch apple pie and it's not the best I've had, but it was pretty solid and of course having it a la mode made it better. The waitress told us it was made at the Ribeye Restaurant that you see on the left on the way down 5 South as you are on your way to Centralia. We have only been to State & Central once for breakfast/brunch but it was so good I need to give them a shout out for the amazing chicken & waffles! The chicken breast is seasoned to perfection, the waffle is crisp on the outside and tender inside. The aroma of my plate being set down in front of me was wonderful, too! The place was buzzing when we arrived with most tables filled, but our server quickly found us a two-top by the window. We got our Bloody Mary's ordered, they were quickly served (and fantastic) and then received our meals in short order. The vibe is upbeat and welcoming, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their meals. The cream cheese had a touch of lavender I believe. It mellowed out the jalapeños. The polish dog itself was ok, but didn't feel too special. I liked the fries, a great crunchy crust, and light on the inside. My wife said her burger was ok to decent. She said she would have it again, but it wasn't amazing or anything. The buns they use were really good. Wish we could give half stars. Because service, food and ambiance was a solid 4.5 star experience. We will go back and try more things from the menu. I am so sad!!! I was looking forward to trying this place out!! I have heard so much about it!! wowzers is all I can say for this place. if you want a great burger and drink while in the state capital, this is the place. Its sort of tucked in a residential area, but easily found on a corner intersection. Our party of 12 was quickly seated and we went straight for the burgers which was perfect. Juicy, hot, fresh veggies and perfectly matched buns! The fries were crispy and hot and was a perfect complement to the burger and beers.
