The ambience is beautiful inside. The best part of the Baked Eggs dish was the cheese. The cheese was so flavorful, creamy, and delicious. Next best was the bread - it was perfectly soft inside with a crispy crust. Between how oily the dish was and my nose running from the increased spice as I continued eating, I wouldn't return for this dish. The eggs weren't noticeable in appearance or taste- I had to search for them. The "creamy grits" were creamy, but the black pepper taste was STRONG. Definitely ordered the side for the "creamy" factor, hoping when the server said harissa in the eggs would have a mild spice, that the grits would calm my mouth. The amount of pepper made this unsuccessful. But if you like black pepper a lot then you'll enjoy them. My son enjoyed the beignet's. The server was also the host and he was kind. It was easy to get his attention when needed. I didn't see anyone with a grin on their face after taking bites of their food. I looked around quite a bit out of curiosity. So for ambiance, kind and prompt service, and the possibilities of the menu I gave it 4 stars. We only tried the few things I mentioned. Went here for Brunch to Celebrate a birthday (Happy Burthday Caroline) and found a hidden jem. Staff was friendly but hands off. Excellent selection of breakfast dishes. From pimento cheese to chicken and waffles. Hardest part was making decisions. Even the coffee was local and robust. I recommend the beignets and the hot pepper dip. Great for sharing . Was full and happy before the main course even arrived. This is a fantastic local spot. I love how they do food. Unique and flavorful combinations. They get packed quickly since its a small space (even on a Monday night.) plan ahead and make a reservation. We did not and sat at the bar. Its pretty tiny- only seats 4. We had fun chatting with the bartender as he slung out all the drinks. We both had the voyager cocktail and shared the shrimp and grits. The grits were creamy and delish. The shrimp were decent- just a touch over cooked. Its worth following them on instagram to see what specials and menu changes they have. Ok, that was a bit extreme, but seriously- the flavor combination of the smoked carrots, parsley, pimento, spicy matcha splat, and toasted buckwheat and whipped feta... holy smokes. On a recent trip to Olympia, we looked up places to eat and Chicory came out on top, boasting an interesting menu and tons of recommendations. When we entered during a brisk weekend morning for lunch, we were asked at the front if we had a reservation. While we didn't have one, we were still seated immediately since there were only two tables filled at that point. During our entire time there, the restaurant wasn't ever over half full, so I was surprised about the reservation question. I supposed dinner might be the prime time to visit? At any rate, we ordered two items off the menu: Biscuits & Gravy ($12) - This is a pretty small portion, with a single buttermilk biscuit sliced in half, then split and covered with a ladleful of sausage gravy. The gravy is served piping hot, but like all sausage gravies, it cools down rapidly. It's thick, rich, and quite herbal tasting. There are bits of chaurice mixed in, tender, fragrant, with a of a spicy quality. The biscuit is fluffy and tender, with an interior that isn't overly dense, and an exterior that has a harder crispy buttered shell. The biscuit has no layering, instead breaking apart kind of like a dense cake. The interior tastes a little like flour, or perhaps corn meal? Like dough that's a bit underdeveloped maybe. At any rate, the texture is pretty good and it combines well with the gravy. I do wish the serving size was a little bigger! (4/5) Chicken & Waffles ($20) - This dish firstly comes with a Belgian waffle on the bottom, with a nicely crisped exterior and a fluffy and vanilla-y interior. It's topped with a large piece of boneless, skinless fried chicken thigh. The chicken is quite heavy on the breading (a good thing in this case!) and is fried well, resulting in an exterior layer that's pleasingly crunchy. The breading is seasoned well with a spice blend that's a bit tangy and a bit spicy - they probably use this same thigh in their Hot Chicken Sandwich. The chicken is not dried out but is a little less moist than I'd expect out of a fried chicken thigh. Still, it tastes good and the texture is good. On the side, they give a pile of stewed collard greens. They are tender and tangy with vinegar and seasoned nicely. I feel like they don't add anything in this dish other than collards, vinegar, and salt, which is good but a bit boring. They also include a couple of wedges of poached apples - tender and sweet. Two condiments enhance this dish. Firstly, what they call a buttermilk syrup. This is a thick syrup that's quite buttery, nutty and sweet, almost like caramel or toffee. Delicious on the waffle. The other is a hot honey that's pretty spicy with a bit of sweetness, working perfectly on the chicken. (5/5) Note: Chicory charges automatic 20% gratuity. They do state this on the menu, and the server will also reiterate this so there's no surprise. Chicory cooks some pretty solid dishes. And had a French Burgundy uncorked to breathe for our meal. Though this nice red was not the house red promised on the menu (different AOC from the Burgundy region), it was still a good value. We stopped into Chicory on a whim. We've driven past a few times, saying "we need to try it out" , this Sunday was the perfect opportunity as we wandered downtown Olympia. Comfortable yet elegant ambiance, open seating plan and a small bar at the end makes conversation easy over some incredible food! I had the Shrimp and Grits which was amazing! It hit all the right spots. Creamy, cheesy, spicy, I was full but wanted to eat it all! My hubby had the Hot chicken sandwich on a giant homemade biscuit. The servings were huge, we both got two meals from one visit which makes up for the little bit higher price tag. Service was quick and attentive. This review is long overdue. Chicory opened up during Covid, and really caught my attention amidst the chaos often seen in the small business - especially restaurant - world. Despite the odds stacked against them, they were able to pump out a unique, exciting, southern - influenced, sustainable ingredients based menu. And not to mention, the vibe of the restaurant itself is super rad. An oldies record or obscure 1920s jazz album might be playing when you enter. This place is surely an oasis for a city that historically has a pathetic set of dining options. What a wonderful place! Their chicken sandwich was crisply breaded yet moist and tender. You can have regular or spicy. We chose regular. It came with tasty lightly seasoned potato cubes. The shrimp and grits were so good-a nice brown sauce served over creamy grits with prawns so tender. Little bits of smoky ham and bites of greens accompanied it perfectly. The only thing I can say, the Bloody Mary could have a little spice to it -was a little bland. I'm sure if I asked, it would have been accommodated as the Service was attentive, music was at a good level and the decor is charming. Not many tables so you definitely want to get a reservation. Looking at the menu I wasn't thrilled because I wasn't familiar with some of the ingredients , but my sister really wanted to try this place. Glad she insisted because the food was great. We started off with the terrine which was really good. There were these fiddle leaf pickles which looked weird, was delicious. The toast with mussels and brined veggies was little sour from the vinegar, but still good. The endive salad with fresh fried bacon bits and sunflower seed spread was a surprise because it was strange to look at. I don't like endive, but I loved this salad. The pork chop and green salad with fried onions and was so good but would've liked more bernaisse sauce. My sister liked the shrimp and grits but the sauce was a bit bold. I'm used to having this dish with more cheesy grits and less sauce but this was okay. The desserts were a nice surprise. The goat cheese mousse was freaking delicious. It had these sweet crunchies and a grapefruit granita and the mouth feel of the different components came together perfectly. If they weren't closing we would've ordered another. The sunchoke crème caramel flan with grapefruit was silky, melty and so good. Adding the grapefruit segments helped to temper the sweetness perfectly. Not kid-friendly. The servers might otherwise be nice people but they are 100% not equipped to deal with customers with young kids. My shy 4 year old asked if they had apple juice, and the server--without looking at him--curtly said "we don't have apple juice" and walked away. I had to stop him and say, well, do you have other juices? What about orange juice? When asking about menu items, I asked what kind of sauce is on the shrimp and grits (which the server had recommended), and his response was "What do you mean?" It turned out to be way more spice than I'd like and overpowered the grits. I wish that was communicated much better. I enjoyed Chicory overall. I think the edible flowers on the carpaccio and pasta were out of place, and those were actually the dishes I enjoyed the least. The carpaccio was a little too acidic and lacked salt and character. We took the mustard from ham/baguette snack, which had delicious pickeled vegetables, to kick up the carpaccio a notch. The dirty rice with crab was tasty to me, and my fiancé said it was dry, but I'm not sure there was enough crab to justify a $10 add-on. The texture of the pasta was good but had zero flavor, and the raw jalapeños didn't add anything. I think the chicken burger was delicious! I loved the textures and sauces. We got the brownie for dessert, and it was quite dry, but the lavender custard and cherries worked well together. Service was good and ambiance was really nice. It was my 60th birthday and I was in Olympia by myself so I wanted a good meal. I settled on Chicory as the menu intrigued me. I was greeted immediately when I entered and given a nice table for one. A server came over within a minute or two to get my drink order. This was the only downfall of this place and why it didn't get 5 stars. It is dry January and there was not one interesting non-alcoholic drink on the menu. I ordered a sparkling water and what came was the cheap bottled water from Wholefoods. Costs about 1.50 at WF but they charged me much more. Oh well, live and learn. When the drink was dropped off I ordered the oysters with black tea mignonette and pomegranate for my appetizer. Wow! The oysters were very fresh, expertly shucked with the brine intact and the perfect temperature (cold). The mignonette was added to the oysters, not on the side which usually bothers me but it was so well balanced that I am glad the chef did this so I had a prefect bite. For an entree I ordered a pork chop with charred cabbage, pickled mustard seeds, chicharrons and a sauce (can't remember the name but it was a cream pan sauce). Again I was very happy with everything about this dish. The pork was very good quality, tender, the right amount of fat with a hint of pink. The charred cabbage brought a nice amount of earthiness while the mustard seeds gave perfect relief for the very rich cream sauce and the chicharrons had a nice crunch. Even though it was my birthday I didn't try dessert. All through dinner the service was attentive but not pushy. I wish I lived closer to this wonderful restaurant. I would go often. read more

I was driving from west coast back to Seattle and decided to stopped in Olympia for a quick lunch. I really like the décor in the restaurant and the causal setting. We ordered their: chilled pea & buttermilk soup with dungeness crab, snap pea, and nasturtium and everything bagel with smoked sablefish salad, sea beans, and nasturtium. The soup is served chilled which was unique and delicious. I really enjoy the soup for a hot summer day. The smoked sablefish salad was good but got salty after a few more bites. This is only the 2nd bad review I have ever left. Do NOT use the online reservation system. It does NOT work and the folks who run the restaurant know this as I was told it has happened "several times" but refuse to take any responsibility or action. (Like for instance, stop using the system until it's actually working). So we show up at the restaurant a couple minutes before our reservation time and are told the reservation is not in the system, that they know there are issues with the system and the best they can do is seat us almost 2 hours after our reservation time. The real kick in the pants (adds insult to injury) is that there were two employees front of house and only two tables sat with two patrons each and we were just a party of two. Albeit they may have been expecting a large party or something, it did not make the situation feel any better. They just kept saying that it was the systems fault, not theirs. The food was pretty amazing! The beef tartare was the best I ever had and the blackened rockfish with hush puppies was fresh and outstanding. The only bummer was that they include a 20% tip charge on the credit card. I wanted to give 5 stars but to take away my autonomy when it came to giving a tip really rubbed me the wrong way. What if I wanted to give more? What if I thought the service was so so and wanted to do 15%? Maybe this place should pay their workers more instead of making customers do it with a fixed tip charge.
