What a wonderful experience. We came here as a family of five on a Friday evening for dinner. The staff was extremely attentive to us and seem to work well as a team. Our waitress was Hayly & she was lovely. I had the steak & tuna combo and it was well cooked. Personally, I wasn't as into their pressed tuna but it's a personal choice. The restaurant itself is well situated however I found it very dark. It would be a great place for date night, girls night, or an after work 5 a 7. Really enjoyed this meal.. I had the grilled chicken club burger.. The bun was really soft and chicken was tender.. Big portion. The fries were really good.. The burger comes with 2 sides.. I picked fries and gravy and ginger cilantro slaw salad-- really fresh taste. To drink enjoyed Grasshopper by Big Rock Brewery.. My friend had the Bison Burger and was impressed. The space is nice.. I had come here once before, with a couple friends, and one friends estranged friend. The second time around was a lot more comfortable, seeing as how I didn't have someone in my ear yammering on about anything to ruin the atmosphere. The service staff was nice, and relatively prompt. It was semi busy, and it took a while for someone to come up and take my order. I wasn't in a rush thankfully. They have everyday happy hour from 3-6, and have food AND drink. It's quite nice. The food itself was tasty, having the Korean chicken (which was 7 on the happy hour menu) and the east Asian bowl, (which was I believe 16) Also got a slider, which was 3$. Ordered the main burger with mixed green salad and fries. I LOVE how the burgers come with TWO side choices. There are also premium choices like sweet potato fries but at an extra charge. Date choice the salmon club burger and she said it was really tasty. Her bacon was divine and I wish my burger had the bacon included too. The atmosphere is nice but its mainly for sports watching as all the many LCD tvs were tuned to sporting events. It is mainly black in colors and the staff all were black. A variety of dishes to choose from: appetizers, burgers, sandwiches etc and they also have brunch menu utill 2pm (check their website. Most dishes are under $17 except for steak&main which are over $20. All the desserts (four options) are $5. They have menu and nutritional info as well). For most burgers and sandwiches, you get to choose 2 sides. LOVE their sides!! Side menu includes ginger cilantro slaw, green salad, caesar salad, fries, quinoa salad, and jalapeno mashed potatoes. And they all come in a good amount in a separate bowl. You also get gravy for mashed potatoes. I ordered a salmon burger when I first came here and a chicken club wrap and a dirt pie for the second visit. Lovely and fresh sides. Try their ginger cilantro slaw! It was packed with flavor. Great atmosphere. You can either sit at the bar or a dining area. Lots of TVs to watch games. The staff here is friendly and attentive. They've also got a spacious patio. Came here today for the first time. I had The Main burger and my friend had the Carolina Pulled Pork. The service was excellent, friendly and fast. The food came out fresh and hot. We got to pick 2 sides to go with our meals. We chose the mixed greens (with suprise goat cheese, nice touch), the fries with dipping sauces( gravy and dill both delicious ) and the quinoa salad ( just OK, could be more flavorful). The burger patty seemed like a previously frozen formed style and smelled and tasted exactly like a McDonald's Angus patty. Don't get me wrong it was very good, makes me think they use the same meat supplier as McD's!? We both enjoyed our very filling meals. The price wasn't bad either... About $15.50 plus tax. I was pleasantly surprised with my first dinner at State and Main. It's a new restaurant, so I expected a few hiccups. What I found instead was an attentive and well trained staff, nicely prepared food, and an upbeat environment. I'm not a fan of chain restaurants. Contrived and microwaved, I've simply decided to spend my money elsewhere. However, this chain is doing something a little different. I had a fresh salad, a hamburger that was hand made, and a selection of local beer. While it's a chain, it didn't feel like a chain. For more than just it's proximity to a movie theatre, if State and Main continues to excel in these areas, this neighbourhood bar will become a staple of the area. read more

Tried to make a reservation here on a Saturday and was told they don't take reservations on weekends. So we arrived just after 6 pm to a wait that was already 30-40 minutes long. That was fine, but we were a bit annoyed to see a table marked as "reserved" in the bar area when we were told they didn't do that. The food was okay. I had the fish tacos which weren't that flavourful and were lacking in toppings. My boyfriend enjoyed his broccoli and cheddar soup but said his burger was mediocre. The food was pretty standard, if not slightly above average. I've had their soup and salad, bison burger and fries. The burger came on a buttery brioche bun which elevated the mouth feel noticeably. What I like is that with every burger combo you get to choose two sides. What I don't like is that this is the only option and thus makes it a little pricey for a burger if you're not feeling super hungry. I would however like to mention that my friend ordered the warm potato salad and it was AMAZING. Would give this place a 3/5 star had my mouth not been graced by that savoury side saviour. First time staying in Guelph, and decided to try this place. Was not disappointed. I had the New York strip. Steak was flavorful and cooked to perfection. Sides were the jalapeño mashed potatoes, which were awesome, and pan seared broccolini. Both were very good. Finished the meal off with an ice cream sandwich. Yum! I came here for lunch while visiting a friend while I was in town. Decor was a classic Kelsey setting or an up scale version of Montanas. The Servers were very friendly and welcoming and are very personable as well. It wasn't too busy despite the fact it was the middle of the lunch rush. On thursday they have a great deal, $5 for a pint of Ontario brewed beer is a hard deal to beat! I had the grilled cheese cheese burger, it was tasty and extremely filling but i found the patty itself was dry but everything else was good. I like the fact that this location gives you a choice of two sides instead of one. I got the Cesear Salad and the jalapeno mash potatoes. Both were exceptionally delicious and definitely worth returning for. I would come back to this place if it wasn't too busy, if it was the closest turtle jacks or any other chain restaurant would be a good alternative. read more

I've been here 5 times now - twice for brunch and thrice for lunch. Every time I've tried something different and every time it has been fresh and delicious! Ambiance is a bit dark but that means nothing. Not one bad thing to say about the service either. Last time I was there, our waitress threw out the fries that I wanted to take home with my burger, so she gave me a generous amount of FRESH fries along with the TO-DIE-FOR dill dip. I can not say enough good things about that dill dip! We have always had a great experience at this restaurant so we invited my sister and brother-in-law to join us tonight. We had reservations for 6:00 pm and didn't leave until 9:30 pm.In a nutshell the staff were very nice and they were quick to bring our drink orders. However, the wait for food was just painful. We kept asking when our food was coming and were told there were problems in the kitchen. To be fair they only charged us for our drinks but we would have been happy to pay the full bill and have our food at a reasonable hour. I was on my own sitting on the patio for brunch. Ordered a drink and some water. Food arrived and then the service stopped. No offer of a refill or if I wanted another drink. When I did ask for something (jam for my toast as none came with my meal) I was given options but the jam never arrived. I would have ordered another Cesar but literally no one came by until I was done everything (with no jam) and by that point I didn't want another Cesar. Went to this place for a staff party. State and Main has a nice atmosphere. Personally I am underwhelmed by asian fusion food and find it to be dated. I had the fish tacos, couldnt eat more than one... The fish was from frozen and it tasted like a hockey puck dipped in curry paste. We had several appetizers before hand varying from DIY lettuce wraps.... which I thought wasnt a thing anymore but apparently still is... along with various shrimp dishes etc. Totally underwhelming experience. First time there and i won't return. I ordered the bruchetta bread as a start and it was interesting to say the least. I've never had whole tomatoes for the mix. That definitely needs to change it's to overpowering. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with Cesar salad and fries with dill for sides. Fries and dill were the best part of the meal. I took one bite of the sandwich and it was to spicy for me. The waitress didn't come back until my husband had been finished his meal for at least 5 mins. By this time i had just been sitting there for quite some time and i was just ready to go. She offered me free $5 cookies as an apology, i declined. I would like to tell everyone here about this restaurants horribly rude and racist general manager. Last night we had dinner with some friends there that had been drinking too much, so before we left we arranged for taxis and the like to get them home safely. My husband and I went next door to the movie theater. All of a sudden we were being accused of drinking and driving and that the police would be called if we got in our car. My husband tried to explain it was not us that had been drinking, it was our friends who were on the way home safely. He did not care to listen to us, just continued to go on about how much he cared about his liquor license (the safety of his customers was clearly not his concern). We were both deeply offended of being accused of drinking and driving, not being asked politely which would have been the normal way to speak to another person. When I told him how can we be drunk when we shared 1 drink together, he then accused us of changing our story (as my husband said we had nothing, half a drink each being pretty close to that). My husband told the man we would never return to the restaurant due to the way this man dared to speak to us. He said good, he told us to never come back. He then asked my husband (who is originally from a foreign country and has an accent, but has been a Canadian citizen for several years) where he learned his English from, an absolutely unbelievably racist statement from the manager of this restaurant to a customer. We are in Canada, people speak in all different languages and are from all over the world, and in no way should they ever be insulted because of the way we speak. We were horrified of this experience. My husband has been in this country for a decade and has never been discriminated against like this from anyone. We will be going to the head office and the Guelph mercury with this story. I encourage anyone who holds someone close who's first language is not English to boycott this establishment.
