We found this place on Yelp when we were visiting St. Charles, IL. It turned out to be a fantastic choice for breakfast and it would be a local spot if we lived there. We were greeted immediately and was able to find a place to sit. The waitress was very friendly and treated us like we were regulars. She was very helpful with menu items that we had questions about. The food came out pretty quickly. Portions were huge, but the food was delicious. Great tasting food, a huge menu of choices, and a quaint diner setting is what you get with State Street. I wanted to try something different than our normal go-to's for breakfast. Since we had to pick something up at Cocoa Bean, it was the perfect opportunity to try this place. So glad we did. This diner location has been a family tradition since I played Geneva softball on the "Little Red Hen" team and went to celebrate wins, and losses, with a big scoop of dark cherry and hot fudge (not saying' how long ago *that* was!). State Street Diner is everything you expect from a Triple D experience. Small, "broken in", great standard food fare, and awesome service from the time you are greeted to the time you leave. Decent coffee and fare prices. If you are looking for a more "fancy" and quiet experience with a latte and view of the river - keep driving East. Great place to try out. We came here around 12:30 in a Friday and sat at the bar. Our waitress was great and was always available. I ordered the Farm Skillet with pancakes and my boyfriend ordered the Florentine Benedicts with a half order of strawberry French toast. The coffee was ok nothing to brag about. The minute we walked into this diner we were welcomed by the staff. It was a cute little diner with a great vibe. We had a wonderful breakfast with the best corned beef hash we have ever had. I like going here after work. The breakfast is great, the service is really friendly, and the food gets to you quickly. It is small for a diner, but I think it makes up for it with positive energy. I used to live in Saint Charles and I ate at State Street (used to be Mel's) Diner many, many times. They have literally changed nothing but the name.... which is a good thing as I feel that this is a perfect breakfast joint. It is small and cozy and full of silver foxes who I have to assume sit there all day. The food is cooked right out in the open which is really novel for a breakfast place. I'm sure it wasn't designed this way, but more of a space issue. I don't care, I like it. The food here is top notch, the service is better than the food. The waitress, I forget he name dammit, was a dynamo. Extremely pleasant and fast as lightening. You would be hard pressed to find an old school diner, this clean and of this quality. This diner has traditional diner fare such as eggs, pancakes, burgers etc, but also has a significant amount of Mexican influenced dishes like huevos rancheros, chilequiles, and things of that nature. While the space is tight- we LOVED the food. The bagel sandwich with food was so perfect. Filling, perfectly cooked and flavorful. The fruit side was a great addition- and had fresh fruit- Strawberries, raspberries, pineapple, cantaloupe with bananas :) ( not just the hard honey dew you get at other places!) I wish I lived closer to this diner. It's small and cozy with booths to sit in. The service here is so welcoming. This was our first day coming out to this place and it felt like we've been going there for years. They have a nice breakfast/lunch list and they also serve Mexican tacos and burritos. I had their huevos rancheros and their salsa is just too good. I wanted more of it. They also make their own hot sauce that is delicious! My husband had their special seafood benedict and I love how they paid attention to the little things like putting a little butter on the english muffin. I visited the State Street Diner with my son this summer, after a day playing at a local park. This restaurant is located on a corner lot, and it is pretty small. We visited during the week around brunch time and had to wait for a few minutes before being seated. I loved the true diner experience here with the diner counter and comfort food! They don't offer crayons or anything for kids, but luckily I had some apps downloaded on my phone to keep my son occupied. He ordered the hot dog off of the kids menu and I ordered the Reuben sandwich with potato chips. Both were pretty good. I was surprised at all the Mexican options on the menu though - maybe I'll try something Mexican next time. The service here was ok, as expected, since the place was crowded. read more

Great, old-timey diner atmosphere with one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. This is one of those places that the locals come to and faithfully return to. I ordered scrambled eggs, perfectly cooked hash browns, with bone-in hickory-smoked ham (sadly, almost no one does that anymore!), and a bottomless cup of AMAZING coffee. Of course, a diner wins or loses points based solely on the quality of their coffee. This is the kind of place that gets points. Not only did the owner practically ignore us, she had to have known the food was subpar, as she never even asked "how were things", upon paying the tab. And we didn't complain once. The eggs were burned, the French toast taste more like an egg than the actual eggs, and the turkey sausage taste like microwave lunch meat...disgusting!! Our first time here and we will be forever customers! It's small and quaint and the employees are friendly. It was a snowy Sunday and the place was still busy. I went in with my mom and 2 1/2 year old son, we had to wait a few minutes and to get my little guy out of the way I sat him at the bar top. As soon as he sat up there a young lady that worked there walked past and made eye contact with him, and he promptly asked for 1 milky please, of course using his finger to show the #1. He has never done this before, she got him the milk and we sat st our table. She wasn't our waitress but she came by and checked on us the whole time, talking to my son. Her name was Anahi and she was fantastic! She made an everlasting impression on our family! The food was also great, good portions, great taste and good prices! What a great find! We were on our way to a different restaurant when I saw this one out of the car window. I told my husband to pull over and we yelped it and liked what we saw. We sat at the counter right away, despite it being prime breakfast time. The waitress was so nice and friendly. I noticed that they had a lot of Mexican food, so I ordered huevos rancheros. I am a sucker for Mexican eggs (see my other reviews for my chilaquiles obsession). The salsa was super fresh and everything was hot and flavorful. The house hot sauce really brought the whole meal together. I would definitely go back. My husband had something with sausage gravy on it (I was jealous, but I can't do that kind of caloric intake). THis place is the diner formerly known as Mel's Diner. It has been under new ownership for a while now and I am surprised this is the first review. My wife and i went there for breakfast the other day and were very pleasantly surprised. I had my usual steak and eggs and it was great! The steak was cooked perfectly! We have been about 3 times now and enjoyed each experience. The staff are all very friendly and the service is prompt. The prices are great also - i think it is one of the best values around Geneva. Had the burger which I think is a pretty good way to judge the food because it is such a staple.The burger was cooked just right and all the fixins were good too. My wife and I have been going to State Street Diner for years now. We eat there just about every weekend and love the friendly reception we receive when we walk in. Being on a first name basis with most of the staff we feel like part of the family.
