My husband and I went here for lunch, it's been awhile since we've been here and we remembered it being decent. It was pretty empty when we got there and we couldn't get a hold of anyone to seat us for awhile because she was in the patio area and didn't see us. It wasn't a big deal though. The elotes were way too acidic for us, too like forward. The mussels were decent, but the sauce was very strong tomato flavor...and nothing else. The pork tacos were very tough and dry. We were not fan of that one. The shrimp tacos were pretty good. The sauce was good and seasoned well. The steak tacos were super cheesy! I liked the tomatillo avocado salsa for it too. The churros were okay haha nothing too crazy special about it really. We didn't know it was raspberry flavored though, it didn't say on the menu. read more

Tried Altiro in Geneva. It was a Saturday around lunch time and I was literally the only person in the restaurant which was a little weird. The menu is a little different from what I thought. I ordered the al alambre - a little surprising. The meat which included steak and chorizo came in a little pot with melted cheese. The steak was a little bit tough, and the chorizo was a little spicy. Cost $22 which seemed a little pricey for the dish. The server was ok I suppose. The ambience was cute, clean. First time visiting and everything was so good! Location is in a residential neighborhood but it's convenient and parking is available. The overall ambience is modern Mexican with a twist. It's a tapas style with small bites to share. The margaritas were freshly made and you can taste the difference with the ingredients. The tacos were so good, the carnitas steak and shrimp! We were a large (8) group at an off time- only one other table occupied but they were mid-service. - mostly through their meal. Service was quite slow with no checking in with the customers to see about refills of beverages, or how the meal was. I ordered the skirt steak tacos. I asked if it could be served medium rare. The answer was yes. Mine was the last meal out- not a big deal. But the beef tasted warmed over and was exceedingly well done. It actually tasted like liver! (It was not liver). I sent it back after trying to get the attention of the waitstaff for several minutes. He was in back in the kitchen (remember no follow up on how the meal was). They took it back, with no words of apology and afterwards the server came back and asked if I wanted a different taco. I did not. Just a very bad experience all-around. read more

Cute outdoor but unfortunately was a little too cool to enjoy - indoor is small but cute. Service was crazy fast - like oddly fast. Food was very good but way too expensive. For two that shared guac appetizer/ 1 order of steak tacos (small qty 4) and 2 margaritas/2 beers - $90! I'd prefer to frequent smaller places like this but this place is just too expensive for us to come back. read more

Been going to Altiro for years. The salsas, tacos, and drinks are outstanding, as is the atmosphere during a nice night of outdoor dining, with the string lights and music. Good for family, dates, friends' nights out. But I came on here to give a shoutout to their lunch menu, which we finally tried as takeout. I had heard about the sandwiches known as cemitas that originated from the Puebla area, and discovered Altiro makes them until 2 pm only. We ordered the Al Pollo Frito (crispy chicken with avocado) and Al Hambre (steak, chorizo, and pineapple) cemitas and MAN WERE THEY GOOD. Like, a flavor explosion for your tastebuds. A little spicy, which perks my husband and me right up. The neatest part was the cemita bread (which the sandwich is named for)--it's a crackly, yet soft sesame bun and when I went to cut it in half (so we could share each kind) I was suprised by the toastiness. Holds all the ingredients nicely. Also got the Al Papa Brava because those are a staple, bringing us right back to memories of Barcelona. But don't sleep on the cemitas! You can't get those just anywhere in the area, and at such high quality. read more

We really like this place. We've been here twice over the last 60 days. It is truly a hidden gem. We love tapas and have been looking for a place closer to us -- this is the place. The food and service are excellent. It is a small place in a strip mall that you might not think of looking at it from the outside, but inside it is very cute and stylish. We liked it. Took my daughter on a Valentines date here and what a lovely experience. It's definitely on the smaller side as far as space but has great esthetic. The food was bursting with flavor! Loved the sauces on everything. Tapas style. Service was wonderful and the owner who I think was hosting at the door was wonderful, asked us about our experience afterwards. Went for dinner tonight. Main courses were good. No complaints. We decided to order the churros for dessert. On menu description it says topped with chocolate, caramel and sweetened condensed milk...we ignored other options. When they showed up they were not what was on the menu. They were fruit filled and on a bed of jam. I didn't realize it until I had eaten half of one. I was not a fan and when I asked the server why they were not what was on menu or even mentioned as only available flavor I was told that the owner had just left and no one was there to help or address the issue. I was charged $12 for a dessert I didn't order or want. I paid, but I can't believe no one was there who could address this. Food good, but it seems that they can switch options with no warning. Ask questions if you go. I am poorer of pocket but wiser in other ways read more

This place is a little off the main downtown but nearby! It has a cute open atmosphere. Service was very friendly. We started with the guacamole. It's comes in 3. We didn't care for the watermelon one but enjoyed the pineapple guacamole. We thought all of them needed salt. Not bad, but lacked seasoning. The esquites was served with the guacamole. It was good! I would order this again. The ratio of ingredients was perfect! The steak tacos were missing flavor. Could be just lacking salt again. The meat was cooked perfectly. This place was such a treat that it warrants my immediate review! My husband and I walked in at 5pm hoping to grab a quick bite before a salsa dancing class at 6pm. This super-cute restaurant with outdoor patio was delicious, fast, and completely worth every penny. Shout out to our server Ale who was kind and had great recommendations for us. First, we tried the guac trio. The chips hold up to the trio of flavorful lime-forward guacamole. We had the poblano soup which was so good and had little pomegranate seeds in it which was so yummy! Then papas bravas. A tapas staple. Love the sauces, but my only complaint is that there was almost too much sauce., The camaronchizo tacos (shrimp + chorizo) were excellent. Who knew the two went together so well? It has a lightly textured slaw on top that was a great counterpoint. We finished with a Mexican spin on tiramisu. Wow! All was delish. This place has been on my list for awhile and I'm happy that I finally made it here! It is over the top delicious and satisfying. The cocktails are made with fresh fruit and crafted perfectly. I had the Ala Coladita and goodness it was so refreshing and warm at the same time, haha. Idk how else to explain it other than it's a MUST try. My friend had a strawberry margarita and that was good too. We started with the trio of guacamole and it was decent, I'd pass on it again though only bc guac is guac in my opinion. Next we had the Ala Gallina tacos and I really enjoyed those. Just enough heat and sweetness to balance it out. We also had the Ala paella and it was definitely not what I was expecting, in a good way too! All the proteins were cooked perfectly. The way I ate it was I put a little out of everything on the pieces of bread that came with it. VERY GOOD and I recommend eating it that way too. My only 'con' is I thought it should have had way more rice. I'm used to paella drowning with rice so this was different for me. The staff was very helpful, I did not feel rushed to order and I also did not feel forced to keep ordering more. I have a shrimp allergy and our server was accommodating to that - we ended up with more salmon since we removed the shrimp from the paella. The decor here is so nice! It's welcoming, chill and sophisticated. This is a great spot for date nights, girls night outs, family dinners, etc you name it! I'll be coming back here more often. Altiro is officially in my top 10 favorite suburban restaurants list for 2023. read more

A lot of reviews compare this place to Bien Trucha, which made me cautious about coming here since I didn't enjoy my food at Bien Trucha. However, I thought the food here was top notch! The guacamole was fresh, creative, and refreshing. The tacos were rich, flavorful and loaded with ingredients. The restaurant is small and dimly lit at night. So wanted to try this place out.. Was a little leary at first.. Only a 4-top in the place eating.. No free chips and salsa here.. Got this side-dish of roasted corn mayonnaise cheese mix ($9.50) sounded great till it came and smelled like dirty feet.. Told the server it was God awful that we didn't like it as we didn't eat it.. The server didn't ask if we wanted something else or at least take it off the bill., Nope,, bam,, got charged for it.. Had shrimp tacos and shrimpy they were.. So not impressed at all.. Food was bland and sparse.. Service sucked and no doggy bags needed their.. Stopped at Taco-Bell on the way home.. At least that had flavor.. Love this place! I can't believe I haven't reviewed it before now. The drinks are so good and the food is really great. The inside is hip and they have a great patio. We were able to sit out there for lunch. We tried the Pepino (cucumber and jalapeño) and the Piña (pineapple and chipotle) Yum! We started with the guacamole. There were three kinds, regular, grape and watermelon. I had the Grilled chicken taco with adobo sauce, grilled pineapple and pickled onion. The flavors just blend so well. Nonetheless, the bench without cushions and the warm setting made for an uncomfortable experience. The tables are small but is conducive to their shareable plates. Papa Brava: potato wedges drenched in sauce and topped with fries egg. Superb! (I wish I can remember the sauces). They really made this dish fantabulous! Chilango tacos: 4 small tacos, tender skirt steak marinated to perfection. Must have! Arroz verde: wow, what is all this deliciousness??? I couldn't even tell where the rice and creamed corn met?!? Packed with flavor and the texture goes down so smoothly. Winning!!! Al fundido: delicious! The combination of the shrimp, cheese, and the pickle is a flavor expulsion. It's rich and savory. Altiro tacos: seared tilapia tacos. Pretty bland. Skip! Raviole: blah blah blah topped with grilled shrimp. My description unfortunately matched the taste of the ravioli. Blahnd! Plantain dessert: it came with 5 small pieces of plantains drizzled with caramel and chocolate shavings. Good but not worth the $8. Wife and I went in for the first time for a birthday dinner. Overall atmosphere was nice, the restaurant itself was clean and attractive, and the service was adequate. I can't say it was an especially warm welcome, but pleasant enough. Our server, also, pleasant enough but not particularly attentive, especially for first time customers. The restaurant wasn't busy on that night so I can't imagine the staff was overloaded. The food was good, I'll give you that! Better than most taquerias, but I can't say it was a "wow!" experience. And keep in mind that Altiro's boasts itself as a "tapas" style restaurant, which means basically your paying more for less. If you go with a larger group and everybody orders something different, perhaps the tapas idea is good, but for an intimate dinner for two,...we left feeling underwhelmed. read more

Felt like I was back in Buenos Aires. Nice ambiance, eclectic decor but background music was a little loud. If you don't like sitting close to strangers and hearing their conversations, you probably don't want to go here. The tables are close together and small. We arrived for dinner at 5:45pm. One other table was there; they were behind us with an aisle separating. About 15 minutes in, a group of five were sat next to us then a group of two were sat on the other side. C'MON! You couldn't spread us out?? I felt claustrophobic, and I'm a 5'2" petite lass. When we left, there was 50-60% open seating. We both ordered Ala Tortilla soup and shared Al Elotito (Mexican style corn) side dish and Al Trio Guacamole (plain, plum, pineapple). The soup had good flavor and was creamy. I liked the different textures (avocado and crispy tortillas). While I give them props on presentation, I felt it wasted some soup. When it's brought out, there are two glass bowls; one has thinly sliced avocado and tortillas, the other has the soup. The server pours the soup into the avocado/tortilla bowl. I was afraid it would splash on me, but it didn't since it's a thicker consistency. I wanted to scoop the soup that ran down the side of the bowl but resisted. Guacamole was good, but I've had better (Rito's Mexican Restaurant in Aurora, made tableside). Seemed like they threw some fruit on top and mixed it with the plain for the two seasonal fruit ones. The tortilla chips that created pyramids and the basket of chips were very oily. Not worth $10.99 IMO. I liked the corn the best. Kernels weren't mushy, had a nice bite, limey, salty. It's large enough to share with 2-3 people. The service was very attentive, but a little overbearing for me. I just sat down and the waitress asked if I wanted to order a cocktail/appetizer. Lady, you saw me just walk in and sit. I haven't even opened the menu yet. The 6oz water glass got refilled... a lot, even after 1-2 sips. The trip out to Geneva, IL, is the only deterrent. Good thing there is Metra because after gobbling a few plates of tacos, you will experience a severe case of food comatose. The tacos are truly specialty tacos. They are of neither Taco Bell nor Mexican taqueria brand. Even the one vegetarian taco that I had came with a smoky flavouring that one would think enhances meat only. The bar service was out of this world. I had one drink off the menu and one that was a concoction that was "off the menu." There is a constant flow of patrons, so either get there early or be prepared to wait. But rest assure, the food is so blasted good that you'll be okay when all is said and eaten. read more

However, I spent the majority of the meal being annoyed that so much of the menu was identical, or nearly identical to the menu at Bien Trucha. Does anyone know how these places are related? I recognized some of the wait staff from Bien as well- so I don't know if they left- or this is the 3rd restaurant opened by the chef? Anyway- back to the experience at Altiro. The food was delicious- and the margaritas were great as well. As a group we tried three different ones, and none disappointed. We started with the trio of guacamole- all great. We also had the corn dish- which was amazing as always. I also thoroughly enjoyed my fish tacos. The service was good- not excellent- but definitely attentive. My favorite thing about the restaurant was the space- it was perfect for the restaurant style. I loved all of their colors, and the unique use of a small space.
