Came here with my mom for breakfast and had a great experience. Apparently I've been here before prior to the redecoration, but I don't remember it. Their specials are a great deal, they come with Juice AND coffee with toast and potatoes. They advertise the best coffee on the outside, and I must say it wasn't bad, especially considering it's a diner. My mom had the omelette and asked for it to be egg white (you can do eggbeaters, as well), and I had the 2 egg special. Food came out quite fast and was good diner fare. I have to say the coffee bar area boasted some nice looking ice cream (maybe it was gelato) and I think a good coffee/tea selection. I love this diner so much! I come here every once in a while for a bite. The servers here are very polite and patient with their guests which is a + especially in a food establishment. They have a variety of foods that you can try. I usually get the mozzarella sticks and the pizza fries (my favorite). This diner is great for lunch and dinner. I cannot wait until my next visit. The service here was GREAT! Friendly staff, the place was very cute inside! I came on a rainy day and it was pretty cold inside. I ordered an egg white omelette with Swiss cheese and the cheese was very bland and had absolutely no flavor. I didn't want to bring it up because it wasn't a big deal I just didn't finish my meal. The home fries were pretty good because they were topped off with fresh grilled onions and peppers. Overall I would definitely come back, just don't get Swiss cheese on your omelette! read more

An unbelievable extreme. Bad service. Bugs. Around about 11:06 we entered State Street Grill (SSG), as a party of four. We asked about outdoor seating but were told we could not sit there because it was too hot , we agreed (although we later saw patrons returning from the deck) . We then asked to be sat at a corner table because it had more seating but were told we could not . A older male, Yanni, told us no because the table sat parties of 6/7 only . Our waitress then came and saw we were a bit uncomfortable ( one of our guests had a leg out of the booth ) offered to ask for use to be seated at a larger table but the manager refused to speak to us about it . Amanda, our wonderful, kind , engaging and attentive waitress , even expressed that she didn't understand why he couldn't speak with me . At this point she was referring to a male, who was tall and slim and wore a plain buttoned shirt . (We later learned his name was George ) We let it go and ordered . At first I thought it would be a great opportunity to take a stand at the establishment & showcase alternative behaviors. Like how you shouldn't support business with bad service and practices but settled , I wanted to try the pancakes ! I had recently been to Nevada diner, which is also located in Bloomfield! Less than a mile away . We received our food . The prep began . And upon look closely at my plate & pancakes I noticed a clear, circular mark/stain . I brought it to Amanda's attention and she said it was due to heat and washing practices .. I'm not completely sure what she meant but i wanted to let my guests enjoy what they had so again , I let it go ! We spoke over our meals , took food pics and my other guests began to eat ! Shortly after a crawling bug appeared on the table ! -continue reading it gets better - I then got up and spoke to the other male (possibly, the man in charge ) that had been moving about the restaurant. He had been greeting and seating patrons and was quite active . At this time he was behind the ice cream case . He met my enthusiasm with a genuine lack of interest . I asked his name , I introduced myself and I began to tell him about my unbelievable experience. His name is George . He didn't give a title, so it is still unsure to me who, if anyone is in charge . .. He met us at the table , killed the bug and asked about the other food . I went on about the experience, starting with the bug and ending with uncomfortable seating arrangements. He didn't address any concerns l had and walked off . Amanda returned curious to find out the resolve . Shocked that we hadn't discussed a resolve , she went to find out what could be done . She came back with the pancakes (from the stained plate) removed and a 10% discount applied to the bill . the other : Around 12:18 we noticed that a group of customers had showed up and sat at the booth we wanted . They were friendly enough to consent to the photo . As you can see , they fit comfortably in the booth. I wanted as much context as possible for both the booth size as well as a timestamp. We paid the bill and left . Never to return again . Tip ? We could've been in and out had we just be serviced with decency and respect . We would've been on our way to our next , rewarding experience. To add -- go to Nevada's . Hint -- stop and get your own syrup if you do go to SSG. The syrup is not a self serve/ pour free bottle . They are miniature, to go syrup containers , that contains High Fructose Corn Syrup & a pretty bad aftertaste . Worst experience ever . There were so many opportunities to increase customer satisfaction and the upper manager didn't see the value . I sit here writing this review with intense stomach pain and nausea from, you guessed it, The State Street Grill. I used to go to State Street all the time when I went to MSU and I loved it. I loved it so much that I decided to take my boyfriend there this morning to kind of walk down memory lane. Not a great idea, friends. Some memories should just not be revisited. The restaurant itself looked dingy. The women's bathroom was disgusting. It also didn't help that a waitress was just standing there on her phone and seemed to totally hate her life. When I ordered my food, it came to me wrong. Two times. Not to mention that my boyfriends food was originally delivered to the incorrect table and had no taste other than sadness. Overpriced. Gross. This is my diner in my area! It can get pretty busy on Sunday's and the weekend but the food and service never disappoints. Each time I go I never wait more than 15 minutes to be seated. All of the staff are super attentive and have excellent attitudes. State Street has a wide selection of food to choose from and also the portions are HUGE. Any breakfast choice is a good one and their appetizers, and lunch/dinner are also good! Their state street slam appetizer is a good way to start a meal since it has a good amount of different foods. My go-to meal is either Greek salad with grilled chicken (choice of salmon, beef or shrimp as well) *yum* and their Milano panini (grilled chicken, mozz, roasted red peppers, and fried eggplant) with their side of balsamic vinegar. Sooooo delicious. Their array of desserts are good too, my favorite being their carrot cake cheesecake. I can go on and on but you should try State Street for yourself. Also, ITS BYOB. You can't beat great food and being able to bring your own drinks. I recommend SSG 100%. read more

I've been here plenty of times and called-in orders all the time and each time it is a great place to come in for a late night meal, after club meal, after sex meal & just about any time of the day kind of meal. I live in Brooklyn and often plan my NNJ visits around a visit to this restaurant. Reading other people's reviews, I find it so hard to fathom giving this place only one star. Alexandria is the perfect server. She is attentive and friendly. She deserves a seven star review. Vlad, the manager, gets seven stars as well! The food is delicious and consistently so. The service is as well. Service has only been truly lacking one time - this was when our waiter decided to leave his shift early without telling anyone. Other than that one instance, the service is very good. (When this happened, Alexandria and Vlad, made it impossible for us to feel anything negative during the rest of our meal. Came here for dinner today with my friend. They have nice parking area, and the restaurant exterior looks cute too. We got seated by the booth area by the window. They had so many choices to choose from just like any other diners. My friend and I were in the mood for burgers so we ordered cali burger and Texas BBQ burger. They both come with french fries which tasted great. When I checked in at yelp, a free coupon for ice cream or pudding popped up; I asked the server if I can use this. He checked with his manager and told me I can. The burgers were good (my friend got well done and I got medium rare). We both enjoyed our burgers and had good time. They gave us checks and boxes to take home the leftovers. I asked if I can have my pudding to go; I redeemed the voucher in front of the server. He said yes, disappeared (we thought he went to get it boxed), and never came back. I didn't bother to ask for it because I couldn't find the server. Food (at least the burger) is pretty good with big portions, servers were friendly and attentive (until the last disappearance), and there is ample space inside. Our friend had a blueberry muffin and she said that it was tasteless and contained few blueberries. They did have a large breakfast menu, but we ate lightly. Came here for breakfast with my husband and a very dear friend. When we lived in Bloomfield, this was the old Willies Diner. We would come here for breakfast and dinner on a semi regular basis. The entire establishment has been upgraded and is very clean and well decorated. They now even offer rooftop dining. Our server was both pleasant and efficient. My husband and I ordered cantaloupe and cottage cheese. The cantaloupe was sweet and partially cut to make it much easier to eat. Our friend ordered a blueberry muffin which was lacking blueberries and flavorless. We will probably give it a try for dinner the next time we are back in Jersey. read more

And I've been coming here for literally 5 years and have always raved about it. After not coming here for several months since the parking is so bad, we decided to come on a weeknight. In a half full restaurant it took them close to 20 minutes to even assign us a waitress and give us drinks. We ordered and then it took forever to get our food. We spoke to the manager and he was extremely nonchalant about it. They also got my order wrong even though the waitress repeated my order correctly. It was extremely disappointing. Only reason why it got 2 stars is because the food was still pretty good. The new management is NOT keeping this place up to par. As a regular, I'm sad to say I won't be back. read more

I'm so sad to write this, but State Street Grill has gone down hill. Big time. I've been frequenting this restaurant since 2010 and will not be coming back. The quality of the food is sub par. Yesterday I ordered the Eggs Benedict. The Hollandaise sauce was neon yellow. Now I've had my fair share of Eggs Benedict in my day and I have never had a sauce so artificial in my life. And frankly the only reason I came back here yesterday is because I wanted to give State Street one more chance before writing them off. The time before we ate here I ordered the french toast, which was something I used to order very frequently over the years. The taste was unpleasantly sour. I'm not sure if it was sour because they used buttermilk for the batter (and frankly I would argue why did they use buttermilk with french toast?!) or because the milk was old and rotten, but needless to say I did not eat my meals on either occasion. Frankly the service is great and that is part of the reason that I have come back here over and over again this past year despite the decline in food. But I'm disappointed in the food for the last time. And don't even get me started on the 2 person booths. Whoever thought that was a good idea is an idiot. They are the most uncomfortable seating on the planet. I miss the old State Street Grill. read more

I enjoyed patronizing this dinner till my recent encounter with the manager. I ordered a chocolate covered cheesecake and found mold in it after a few bites. I proceeded to let the manager know and he looked at me like there was no problem. Never offered any type of resolution (like a different dessert or take it off my bill) just walked away to check the other desserts and came to show me that it was only that one. I haven't been to State Street Grill in at least ten years. I'm not sure if they've changed management but have ordered from them twice in the last two weeks for home delivery and it is top notch. I really miss diner food, now being indoors more than usual, and was glad to see that they deliver so decided to try. Simple Jersey diner classics make me happy - like pizza burger, fries with a side of gravy, French dip (must say, a generous sandwich), Greek salad (which I'm delighted to see includes anchovies and is very fresh). I use to go there often and their food was excellent. I picked up a dish today that was hard and tough to digest. I ordered it to go but called later to let them know how disappointed I was. They offered for me to return for another dish, no thanks. I won't ever go back there. Last time I was there my friend was served chicken and halfway through she realized some areas were pink and raw. What happened to this place. Very sad.
