I use to go there often and their food was excellent. I picked up a dish today that was hard and tough to digest. I ordered it to go but called later to let them know how disappointed I was. They offered for me to return for another dish, no thanks. I won't ever go back there. Last time I was there my friend was served chicken and halfway through she realized some areas were pink and raw. What happened to this place. Very sad. Ever since the tall gentleman with beard and shaved head left, it has gone downhill. Hostesses all standing around the register laughing and gabbing instead of checking tables to see if i have the napkins they didn't set the last two visits. That gentleman was always walking around, checking tables and the food and keeping the staff in line. It is no longer like that. read more

I really don't leave reviews very often at all, but I have to share my experience with state street tonight. I have lived in Montclair for 8 years and have enjoyed this place many times during that time. My wife and I ordered for pickup on Saturday March 26th at around 7pm, and I got their chicken parm dinner which I have had several times in the past. It was simply disgusting. The chicken was extremely dry and over cooked, very salty, almost no cheese or what cheese there was stuck to the lid of the container. There was something metallic smelling and tasting about the dish. I tried to force myself to eat it but couldn't do it so I brought it back and they gave me a refund. I am still not feeling well from eating part of it. Unfortunately with this bad experience I don't see myself coming back especially with the range of options I already have in Montclair. It's a shame because I used to like it. I'm not sure if they changed management or chefs recently but whatever it is, it's not good. read more

This place changed owners a few years ago, and as much as we loved this place, we stopped going here. We tried, but the quality has gone done and the overall value has really gone down. The first thing you notice is that they took out most of their seating for groups, and installed two seater booths that take out the open feeling the restaurant had and replaced it with a cramped corralled feeling. Our first time, after the new owners took over. We were given a seat under the stairs. A place there had never been tables before. The food was still good and so we came back a time or two after. Each time more disappointing than the last. The last straw was when our server told us she snuck us crackers for the kids soup because of her boss saw it, she would get I trouble for not charging us extra. They say good things come to those who wait. A couple months ago I was at the DMV in Newark New Jersey and I was asking around for a fine diner to enjoy a nice bite at. However nobody was able to tell me where I should go and eat. On Saturday I linked with my friend Jacqueline, and we went to one Dinner, I forget its location; but it was too packed, so we headed to State Street. I'm honestly happy to say that this dinner is possibly the best diner I have been to in the last couple years. Our waiter Andrea was very very very helpful, there was no line and our orders came at a reasonable time. I had a lengthy drive back to New York City so I just enjoyed two cups of coffee French vanilla half-and-half cream, while my friend enjoyed some type of seafood/chicken pasta stuff with meat, shrimp and lobster meat. First things first. This place is BYOB mon--thurs. we brought in a bottle of champagne and our server immediately greeted us and offered to open the bottle. Complete with wine glasses, orange juice , and an ice bucket. The menu is extensive and offered so many options. We chose breakfast and it was delicious. The fruit was sweet and Fresh and the portions are huge. The place is well lit clean and offers a nice ambiance. The staff was friendly and helpful. And a manager stopped to chat on our way out. I really enjoy this diner for its food. Lately I have been doing online and pickup orders of calamari. It is lightly breaded and fried, and they give plenty of hot marinara sauce. I ask for one wedge of lemon, and they give me 3. The last time I ordered I waited until I got to the restaurant to order. Why? Because the two times before that when I arrived my orser had not been sent to the kitchen and I had to wait. Thats ridiculous. I ordered and paid onlune, put the order in so I can just pick it up. For a waiter to come up to a table with two gay men that were minding their business and tell them that the busboy wants both of their numbers and then pointed back towards the staff and for all of them to be standing there laughing is absolutely ridiculous. I have been dining here every Friday for the past few months with a fairly large group (8-15) more or less. We've never really had any problems with anything at this Diner until last night.... So we get there with a group of 12 people around 9:50pm and we're seated a lot quicker than in the past which was a good sign. We sit down and we wait for a really long time before anyone comes around to wait our table. After about 20 minutes someone comes and apologizes saying she didn't know she was assigned to our table.... okay sure that's fine I guess..? So we finally order since we had so much time to decide anyway. Our food doesn't come out until about 11:15pm!!! And when the food does finally come out, half of us didn't even enjoy our food. -The burger was burnt when it was asked to be cooked medium. -The pizza fries weren't hot. -Someone didn't get their tea. -Someone didn't get their disco fries and just got regular fries. -Someone didn't even go past one chip of their nachos. All in all, this one bad experience shook our group and we've decided to take our talents elsewhere. I'm reviewing the restaurants staff two stares not the restaurant for their food. The Restaurant has a great kitchen and usually a great staff, but this time the staff was not on point. I don't like to blame one person but we've waited 45 minutes had our order in and people came in after us and left before us. This is just not acceptable. Last time for dinner here unless things change. I love how nice and kind the manager ws that removed our drinks off our bill.the same cant be said for the same woman that waited on us the last time. Again we feel ignored yet again. I love the food here but this is nonsense i dont like being treated like this. I had to ask the manager to get us water now too. Im sitting here writing the review. Also we didnt order anything big because of the fear it would take too long and we would fet home late again. I hope we can get the bill on time. It would be nice to be checked on more often. Late night again... and attitude. Thieves and by far the nastiest customer service I've ever experienced. My husband left his hearing aides there and when he called them the manager said he was going to put them away for us. When we arrived to pick them up we were told they were no longer there. My husband called and asked for the manager and the lady that answered the phone gave him the worst attitude and hung up on him 3 times. Relatively little has changed over the decades, except for a facelift and that the reasonable prices in the day are now expensive. Massive menu, extremely poor service, very ordinary food, lingering cleanliness issues and difficult parking . . . a time capsule where then-and-now offers little difference. So, I stopped in here a couple Sundays ago, or maybe more like the wee hour of Monday morning, after picking up my favorite person on the planet from the airport. The waiter forgets about it until after we were done with our appetizer and onto our main course. Oh wait, our appetizer was delivered WITH the main course. That's when I overheard him talking to the barista about hot chocolate, so I confirmed with him he was discussing my friend's order, which happened so long ago I had forgotten about it. He was. It was delivered about 5 minutes later. We ordered the Chinatown burger to share - supposedly a teryaki burger. Yet when the burger arrived, no teryaki sauce on it whatsoever. So I asked the waiter for teryaki sauce - he looked kind of confused, and then brings out some really watery teryaki sauce - obviously not built for topping a burger. And this boring, kinda-dry, burger could have really used a boost, kinda like some people are worthless without their coffee in the morning. We also thought the pickle tasted funny. Jusayin. The fries were okay though. Oh, and the appetizer was okay - spinach dip with some kind of filo-dough type chips that they referred to as tortilla chips. Nothing exciting though, just okay. Then we ordered dessert, a must when we dine together. We went with the apple crisp, supposedly famous, according to the menu. That apple crisp should actually be infamous for not really being apple crisp. It was more like an apple flaky half-crispy stale dough concoction. I don't know, the food here was kinda just one disappointment after another. The water was good though. Oh, but they have rooftop dining, which I thought was extremely cool, except they close it down at a certain time of night, which would seemingly be the best time to dine up there... One should also note this is a 24 hour diner as advertised... unless you're there on a Sunday night/Monday morn, when they close at 2am, which is not advertised... read more

So I'm going to go with 4 stars because the staff takes it there. I definitely will be back- they seem to have a great assortment of food and all very fresh. Oven baked pizza made on site. Juicing area, desert case (of course). I got the salmon and mango salad which was so close to being amazing except the salmon had absolutely no seasoning. Go with the balsamic- it's house made and sooooo good I brought some home with me. I don't know the brand of dressings they use for but I didn't like any of them. The bathroom are clean. I swear I have tried..But the last time I went the other night at approx. Midnight , I realized it is really not me..and it is just the weird place. I am giving it 3 stars because of the nice people..But the food would receive 2 stars. These 3 times are over a span of 5 years. Yeah it was three times..1st time..The breakfast tasted off and I thought it was because of the huge consumption of alcohol the night before. 2nd time..I stuck with fries and a sandwich, something creepy feeling about it all. 3rd and final time, fries and a sandwich again..still that creepy feeling that something is not right. Besides the taste not being" that" bad, it isnt that good, but I just get a creepy feeling about eating it. My daughter likes the pancakes and said that the burgers are good. I love good food and I know good food and I would rather have good food and leave a 5 star than to leave a review like this. Take it from there. read more

Based on a recommendation from a local at the airport, this was the first place I tried after getting off the plane from California at 5:30AM. Naturally, I wanted a warm, home-cooked brunch feel. The food did not disappoint! I got a florentine (spinach and feta) omelette with sausage, and the accompanying home fries were to DIE for. Perfectly flaky with a touch of crispy. I'm still dreaming about it. Portion sizes were grand, and the diner atmosphere was classic. -1 star for the burnt toast--can happen to anyone--and for the mediocre service. Let me start by saying I am obsess with diner food. State Street Grill is one of my favorite diner. I've been here many times. Great diner. The food is delicious! I've had their breakfast at 12am and it definitely hit the spot. The eggs were tasty, the wheat toasts were not burn, and the potatoes were delicious. I have also order lunch from here. I had one of their hamburgers. It was big and very tasty. I had chilli fries for the first time here which was amazing. Not expensive at all. You definitely get our money worth.
