Also, I had a bug issue in the event prep area behind stage. They probably needed to have had their insect contractor do a once over before our event.

I've been taking improv classes here for the last year! And it's been the most fun to be playing make believe with grown ups! 10/10 recommend the classes. Coldtowne has a vibrant community from all walks of life and everyone is truly welcome here, just as they are. An inclusive space full of every flavor of weirdo (myself included) and I am HERE FOR IT Shows Thurs-Sundays, free jams, and there's stand up and workshops and classes. This is one of Austin's best kept secrets, and a locally owned operation…read more Don Toner and crew have taken what was a small production company using a stage at McCallum High and evolved it into a year-round full two-stage facility with comfortable seating in an intimate atmosphere. AP relies on a cast of seasoned local talent, including the brilliant and talented Michael Stuart, to provide a broad variety of theatrical productions each season. For live theater, the prices are reasonable, with half-price student tickets and guest ticket discounts for season ticket holders. The one thing I really appreciate about this venue is (and I repeat myself) the intimacy of the seating and stage. The stage literally ends at the edge of the first row. The most distant seats are no more than twenty feet from the stage, making the production even more real and audience connected. You get the feeling you are literally part of the play; there is no significant degree of separation between the actors and the audience. The other thing that I love is that it's literally a working company. Don Toner himself will often call back to confirm seating reservations. If it's not Don, it's frequently one of the other cast members. When you have a special request, there is no "box-office" detachment. And, at the end of the play, Don's waiting at the door to shake your hand and welcomes your comments regarding the performance. If you'd asked me ten years ago if I would ever be caught dead watching five plays a year, my answer would have been an emphatic "no". Thanks to one of Don's Actor's Equity members, John Hoff, I got hooked. John's no longer connected with the group as he's living in Colorado, but I thank him for instilling the appreciation for this troup in me. P.S. One of their most acclaimed productions is "Dead Presidents' Club", which is showing for one more day (11/9/2008) at Evans Auditorium at Texas State University-San Marcos. I had a coupon for me and a plus one to have a reserved seat for free at the Dell Diamond, and I wanted to take advantage of it. I convinced my buddy to go with me to an opening series game where the Round Rock Express faced the Gwinnett Stripers. We agreed to go on a Wednesday to get our dollar hot dog night on. You know how that goes. Of course, going to every sporting event feels like they are going to nickel and dime you. It's $15 for parking, so if you can carpool, I'd highly recommend it. Beers range from $12 for domestic to $14 for craft. Everything is pricey. The hot dogs still remained $2 the whole night. Selfishly, I ate 5 over the nine innings. I didn't eat much through the day, and a decent ballpark dog was calling my name. As for the actual game, it was over by the second inning. The night was very windy, so no balls had a chance to go yard. The Stripers scored 6 runs at the top of the 2nd and it was 7 scoreless innings for the Express. Ay caramba. The nice gentleman in front of us was at the game with his wife and gave us good conversation. We watched kids rabid for the flying foul balls. Sometimes the game isn't even the most entertaining part because the stadium has a story of its own. The hot dogs were very nice. At a dollar, they could be lukewarm, soggy, and wrinkled, but they were dense, flavorful, and actually pretty good. Sometimes I wonder if dollar dogs are cheaper and they probably are, but you couldn't fool me. They weren't jumbo quarter-pound dogs by any means, but they were a normal quality-sized wiener. I drank a draft of the Love Street Blonde, one of my favorite common craft beverages, and got a can of Michelob Ultra from a very nice hawker that I obviously tipped. I just don't really like Michelob Ultra, I realize. I took a stroll through the Dell Diamond before leaving and there's a lot of cool spots from their yard in the back, which is great for just relaxing during the game, though the view isn't the most ideal for the action (great for bombs though). There's a full bar as well with baseball simulators and TVs showing other games, but if I'm paying money to park and watch a game, maybe that's not the move IMO. Regardless of the Express getting rocked by the Stripers, I had a great time and want to return to more Express games this season. As a young adult, the deals on weekdays are too good to pass up. Thursday might be a move in the future for those $4 domestics, $7 drafts, and cheaper food options around the park. Maybe next time the Express will get more runs than hot dogs I ate. We usually do GA and it's decent because the sound is pretty much spot on for most shows. A summer concert can be grueling but this is Texas...wear sunblock and hydrate.

Amazingly, Stubb's has managed to survive the ever changing landscape of Austin. Until recently, I…read morehadn't been to Stubb's in many years. I'm so happy that Stubb's is still around (R.I.P. La Zona Rosa, Austin Music Hall, The Backyard, Erwin Center, The Parish) and it hasn't relocated (Emo's, Antone's). It may be surrounded by apartments and hotels, but for the most part, it is still the Stubb's that I remember from 20 years ago (minus a few changes to the amphitheater). I saw Teddy Swims a few weeks ago. It was a sold out show and the line to get in was literally down 9th street. It took about 30 minutes to get in. They had a clear bag policy in place. Oddly, they still searched items in clear bags which seemed to defeat the purpose. They've made some changes to the outdoor stage. VIP is in the back and is much larger than the old balcony. There's a dedicated area for porta potties and picnic tables in the back between the bar and VIP. They also had an area that served food. The lines at the bar were long, but they actually moved pretty quickly. The bartenders were super nice and gave generous pours. Drinks were reasonably priced for a music venue (cocktails were $12). The sound quality was great! I was able to find a spot in the back where I could see the stage and still have some space to move around. Teddy killed it as always! What an amazing musician! They had an after show indoors. Anyone with tickets to the main show could go for free (otherwise tickets for the after show were $10). It was a local band called Retro Cowgirl and they weren't bad. The inside small stage looks exactly the same as I remembered it! I have so many memories there including meeting my best friend of nearly 20 years at a Marc Broussard concert back in 2005. There's minimal street parking now that they've built apartments and hotels. I parked at a surface lot a few blocks away at First Baptist Church. I'm so happy that I was able to see a show at Stubb's. I don't get to go to shows in Austin as much anymore, but this was such a treat!
