I think we can all agree that any wine store in Utah isn't going to have the most extensive selection of wines. It's no Lee's or Total Wine, but it'll do. I was actually fairly impressed with the selection here compared to the other state run stores (so you know...all of them), but what I was NOT impressed with was the mislabeling. Every time I read the label/price tag for a bottle I was excited about (specifically because of the vintage/year), I would pick the actual bottle up to find out that the year was different than it should have been. I realize this doesn't seem like a big deal, but if you know much about wine, you know that the year DEFINITELY matters. Update your labels, please. This is the number one option in Salt Lake City. Hands down, you cannot convince me otherwise. based on the reviews I was expecting the store to be much smaller. It's like a little mini warehouse of wine. Not only is the selection pretty fantastic, but the employees really know their stuff! I went in looking for a very specific bottle of wine, and they actually carried the kind of wine I was looking for. The stores inventory is eclectic enough to find what you're looking for and the prices are pretty great! I bought two beautiful bottles of wine that came highly recommended for under $40 combined. Since moving to the state, it has been difficult to find/purchase quality wines, beers, and other alcoholic beverages... until now. This is DEFINITELY my place to go for any alcohol related purchases in the Utah area from now on! Not only does this State Wine Store have everything I was looking for (hard to find beers, rare wines, and classy [but pricey] whisky and other drinks) but they were friendly, extremely clean, and had an easy to navigate set-up. Oh, and another bonus is there were no shady characters in front of the store, no crazed alcoholic consumers driving (literally) their cars into patrons and other parked vehicles to Olympic sprint into the store, and most of all - there were no "just turned 21" shoppers who typically are loud and obnoxious .. In summary - clean, organized, fairly priced, great workers, 'mature' (take that how you will) crowd, and a fairly large private parking area. Needless to say, this will be my store from now on! 5 stars for Salt Lake City. What I mean by that is: you will not find a better selection, more knowledgable staff, or better prices on wine anywhere in SLC. In other states without super-restrictive liquor laws that inhibit the benefits of competition, you'd find a wine store with much better prices. The selection and customer service here would go toe-to-towe with any wine store in California, (it's just the prices that make me a little sad). The wine prices, for Utah, however, are totally reasonable. It's cheaper than the Sugar House state run liquor store, for the exact same bottles of wine, and they have a much better selection. read more

This place is like a candy store for grown ups. I remember the first time I walked through the doors here, i'm pretty sure I heard angel's sing (there may have been doves). As a grown up human who likes to booze (who is not from Utah) this place is just the bees knees. So many wines, I could just die. This is probably my favorite place to spend money. There is one con here and its that the liquor is a bit over priced so if you are going to buy the hard stuff, stick the actual liquor store. read more

Hands down THE BEST selection of wine in Utah!! Sure there are other wine stores in Utah, but none compare to this location! They have everything from $3 bottles all the way up to hard to find collectors wines like Opus One (which I actually have purchased here). This place is overwhelming, especially for those visiting for the very first time. But don't fret, there are touchscreens to help you any wine you're looking for, it will tell you exactly which isle to find it on. Not sure what you're looking for? These same touch screens will give you tasting notes, food pairings, ratings, etc. It's like a wine for dummy's app. Although, I've used it many times and don't consider myself a dummy. When you com here, plan to bring a full wallet because you're sure to find several things you want to try. I don't think I've ever left with less than 3 or 4 bottles, but have been known to leave with as many as 10 or 12. Look out for the sale wines too, i think they put them out the first Friday of every month (I could be wrong), they are wines they are clearing out and you can get some crazy good deals on some reasonably good wine! They have several check out lines so the line at the register always seems to move fast. They also have 2 wine chillers towards the doors, so if you need something chilled on your way to dinner or a party no worries, you can chill a bottle in a matter of a few minutes! Voila! They have you basic liquors here too, but not as extensive selection as you'll find at the other state liquor stores. If you haven't made the trip out to this location it's a must! The wine selection here is outstanding. From the super-cheap (read: boxed and Yellowtail/Fisheye varieties) to the super-spendy (read: wines I can't buy even when I want to impress people), this store has it all. The wines are organized within the store by place of origin or varietal, and then placed on the shelf in rough order of price. There are always sales displays throughout the store, and you can find amazing (for Utah) bargains if you try hard enough. (Note: on the low end, you can find the same or similar bargains at all the local ABC stores. It's on the higher end that this store really shines.) I'd give it five stars but for two things. First, there could/should be more printed reviews available for the various wines in the store; right now there is maybe one review for every fifteen or twenty wines, and if you're going to specialize in something . . . well, then do it right, you know? Second, because the store is so focused on wine, there are very few other beverage options available, e.g., maybe five different kinds of vodka, seven or eight kinds of bourbon/whiskey, no specialty liquors like Campari or elderflower, etc. I know, I know . . . it's called the wine store and so it may be unfair to criticize . . . but when you're prepping for a party it would be nice to have a little more variety, right? It's Utah, and it's no fun to drive another several miles to ferret out the next-closest ABC store just so that you can please all your guests. read more

Excellent wine selection (I mean I guess that is the namesake of the store) that I think is even more expansive than the store on 4th. Prices generally range from low end Carlo Rossi (try the Blush!) to upper tier Sparkling Wines that I will never be able to afford. Most of the staff are friendly and helpful, one even gave me a recommendation on a Riesling I loved! Minimal liquor selection, though it does exist (Basic Whiskey, Vodka, Rum, etc.) Resist the urge to buy the crappy impulse-buy wines at the front ($4.99 for Barefoot seems like a good deal, treat yourself better than that, you deserve it!) read more

The selection was the best I have seen in SLC so far. It's definitely no Boulder Colorado Liquor Mart or any BevMo! in California. The prices are at or above the rest of the world. No discount for case purchases, at least not for the 1.5 cases of Champagne I just purchased. I found this place to have almost ZERO customer service capable people. It is obvious that there isn't any competition for this state run monopoly. If there was competition this place would have gone out of business shortly after opening its doors. I still go back because it's really the only gig in town. What happened to the "Free Market" people purport to exist? I give 2 stars for the products themselves No stars for customer service, hours of operation, and price. Walking in here it felt like Christmas there was such an extensive wine selection compared to other stores we have been in recently. We like to treat ourselves to a bottle of wine and whatever food we are enjoying at home but as we are from out of State we were initially disappointed by the wines available near us compared to say Oregon or Washington or even Nevada or Wyoming! We read the reviews and stopped in on a day trip to SLC area and were thrilled to discover wines from so many different countries, some good sales and overall decent prices. We had a lot of fun narrowing down our choices, they also had some Hive Cider which was nice too. Not really any Canadian wines (just a bottle of Inniskillin ice wine) but overall lots to choose from and try. We also recently learned there is a Utah DABC app that tells you which stores have a certain wine/liquor/beer you are looking for so I plan to give that a whirl too. First, this is SLC, Utah so that there's a store dedicated to wine is enough for me to give it four stars. No, it's not the best wine store I've been in with regard to selection but let me repeat: this is SLC, UT. If you're looking for something different, visit California. The prices are actually not too bad if you look online and compare and there is certainly enough of a range so that you can feel good picking up several bottles for your personal use and then a couple bottles for when guests come by (yes, guests, you get better wine than I get for myself - I know why you visit). The staff seem friendly, although I've not yet had reason to test their knowledge (I have listened to them help others, though, and they are able to answer questions from, "I'm having ____ for dinner, what should I serve" to "I was at a restaurant and ordered a Merlot -- I can't remember the name, but it sounded like, ______"). I started going to this place when it first opened and this is the one I hit probably most often. As part of my function for the food website my wife is working on (view my profile, if you want to check it out) as well as "our time", we go through quite a few bottles of wine and this is my go to place, even though I have to drive past a couple others to get there. It's very clean, well laid out, overall and the gamut from cheap rotgut to the stuff that's into the many thousands to acquire is here. There is also a decent selection of beer and hard liquor, though that is not the intent of this store. The intent is wine and they do a fantastic job with it. I'd put the selection here against almost anywhere else in the country, actually. The staff is generally friendly and some of them are knowledgeable to a degree. There is also a neat wine chiller there as well as handy carts. The aisles are very narrow and frequently they will be out of wines, whether on SPA or not, but this is definitely the crown jewel of the DABC as far as wine stores go. read more

I've been going to this store about once a month, for over a year because they have a great selection of wine. However, their management makes the experience absolutely miserable. Firstly, the "manager" looks like he's been doing meth for a good decade, but worse than his appearance is his horrible attitude and poor customer service. I am 35 years old and have a Montana ID. The inconsistency of accepting my license, has been frustrating to say the least. The management here seems to have a variety of preference regarding who they'll sell wine to, which is incredibly irritating. I suggest finding literally any other establishment to purchase wine from if in Salt Lake City. read more

The staff seems really nice and I always see one of them helping someone that doesn't know what they want. Utah is tough...the liquor laws are pretty antiquated, which in turn, causes wine to be a bit more expensive in our state. Buying a Mark West pinot, for instance, is cheaper in Hawaii( go firgure). But what I love about this wine store, is that I can try different wines from all over the world at various price points. And we have found some great buys that are delicious! read more

This is a great place to come if you need help picking out a bottle of wine. The selection is very good and the staff here knows a lot about wine. They can help you find something in your price range or recommend a wine to pair with what food. But it's not a snooty sort of place. With so few wine/liquor stores around, it's where everyone comes to stock up--so don't feel intimidated. Ask questions and try something new. There are plenty of great wines for under $15. read more

The selection is better (at least in the category of California reds) than the BevMo that was my favorite when the lived in Pasadena, California. If they don't have it, then you don't need it. I love the state wine store! I prefer to go here than to the liquor store because, and of course, they have more wine selections and other choices of liquor with better deals. In addition, if you are not into wine that day, the store carries different liquor that you don't always see in the liquor store. I like to always come back and try other selections. They also show which bottles are rated higher and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Definitely keeps me coming back. read more

Lots of great stuff that I've had trouble finding in my neighborhood State Liquor stores. I'm goin' with two here, people. Don't get me wrong: the layout of this government controlled facility is great, the building is not prison block-like (see: old version of wine stores in Utard), the help is friendly, the place is expansive... I just don't particularly believe the selection is all that impressive. It's very limited, in fact. Most of the best wines you can think of---say, Dierberg/Santa Maria Valley--they don't offer (I can list 23 wines off the top of my head right now that I was unable to acquire, even by contacting the DABC). 'Name" brands are pretty much par for the course... safe, middle-of-the-road vintages that produce enough wine to accommodate the Utah monopolized buyer. Great boutique wines are very limited if altogether absent. True wine aficionados won't be as gleeful as the common folk about this store. Not to belittle the common folk, but it's like telling a guy who loves Trader Joe's to go to that lame little outpost in Draper and telling them "it's just like Trader Joe's!" when it isn't... well, that's how you'll feel when you go to the gov't controlled wine store in SLC. A little disappointed. I'm just being realistic here... this place is cool, but it deserves no more than two stars because I know what a real wine store is like. Go to any small town grocer along the California coast and you'll know the difference: "it's the selection, stupid! "Two stars. That's it. The 280 Harris Street State Liquor Store is the best Utah has to offer. Base prices are higher than most states, but its the broadest selection of wines in the region. Today, I was selecting some wine / beer for the Memorial Day weekend and found a magnum of a nice wine priced right at $200. When I went to check out, it rang up near $225. I asked them to double check the price I saw at the bin and sure enough it was the lower price. They indicated they couldn't sell it for the price they had posted. Hands are tied by the state. I complained, but to no avail. Anywhere else, stores stand behind prices they post. Its pretty sad the State can run a monopoly and act like one as well. It certainly not protecting anything except incompetence. read more
