This Stater Bros is small, but VERY convenient. It's located off of Newport Blvd and 22nd St/Victoria. If you come at night, you can't miss the nostalgic, well lit "Tater Bros" sign. This is probably my favorite, quickie go-to grocery stores when I'm in a pinch. It's right before the fwy, so if need anything for a gathering (food or flowers), it's ultra convenient and reliable. They only thing they really don't have are greeting cards. They have a small rotating wire-rack of cards, but that's about it. Although my favorite checker, Phi, no longer works there, all the grocery clerks have always been so friendly and nice. You can tell they love what they do! The store is super clean, there's plenty of parking because there aren't any other restaurants or stores to compete with. Also, some of the prices are new lows. I love checking the mailers for good deals. I seem to find myself here at night for ice cream... Not sure why, but I gotta nip that in the bud as my waist keeps increasing. I've only been to this store 2 or 3 times but when I do come, it's for meat. I don't typically shop at Stater Bros but they're known for having the best meat and butchers. This location is no exception. All 2 or 3 times I've visited, Fabian behind meat counter has been so patient, kind, and helpful with me and other customers. I want to give a huge kudos to two employees. Tyler- Asst. Manager - I have been extremely challenged to reach the Sugar free vitamin water. All were on the very top shelf. I buy it weekly. Usually it's hard to find an employee ,that's not at the cash register, to get help on any aisle. This time, the Asst. Manager, Tyler, was walking through the store. Yay! When I told him my dilemma, he didn't say okay, we'll work on it, or we'll see what we can do. NO. He actually moved all of the Sugar free to a lower shelf immediately!!! The other employee is a cashier, Ofiela. She is so kind and goes above and beyond to help me. Because I'm disabled, she comes around the counter and takes everything out of my cart to help me. I was on my way to a Birthday Party and the Host asked me to buy fried chicken. It was my first time in the store. I went to the Deli with the woman with the nicest smile helped me and asked the guy in back to cook 24 fresh Thighs and Drumsticks. Wow , I was super impressed. I went to pick up a few items tonight and encountered a nice man that worked there in one of the Isles and he was very nice. I went to check out and that man happened to be checking out in front of me. The cashier and bagger were laughing with him I think. As he waked away they were making fun of the guy. They continued as I waked up and totally ignored me until I waved and said to them Hey you have a customer. The cashier apologized and the bagger just stared with a smirk on his face. I told the cashier that it is terrible to ignore a customer and he apologized again. I felt he was genuine. As I was walking away the bagger looked at me with a shity smirked again and told me to have a nice evening and he was not genuine. I felt he was making fun of an old lady. We only shop here because it is a block from home. The store is old, but they keep it pretty clean. The big problem is food handling. In the past 6 months, we have has spoiled milk days before the expiration (3x), frozen ice cream that obviously defrosted as there was separation/ice crystals, frozen french fries that clumped together and unusable. Tonight was the last straw, bought a Screaming Sicilian frozen pizza that had clearly defrosted as 1/3 of it was bare. I come here. Not often but. Do shop. For groceries today was not. My day. I come to this location. Once in a while in the morning get greeted when checking out. But the lady today. Lorraine. Wasn't not. In to it today. Looked like she was mad or something. She greeted the customer in front of me She was being all nice but when it was my turn she didn't even ask me if i wanted a bag But yet she continue talking to the customer behind me. I felt discriminated okay didn't say nothing not even a thank you. I walk out. But i had to go back later this same day to get milk that o forgot. And same cashier same thing. Before today, I would have given the stater brothers here in Costa Mesa on Newport 5 stars however, when I went early at 9 AM Saturday morning to avoid the crowd because of the pandemic situation, I noticed a 1/2 a dozen people not wearing masks. Just because it's Republican territory the coronavirus doesn't understand that. Management needs to make a rule and stick with it. This Stater Bros., like all the locations I've visited, isn't the sort of place you'll want to fly into town specially to visit, but it's got a great selection of wine and beer, and the service you'll experience throughout is excellent! The last time I came here, I was craving a chilled bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, and I didn't go away disappointed; a helpful staffer led me right to the place I could find one :-) I found several other necessities as long as I was here, got checked-out with no waiting, and headed home to enjoy my wine with some dinner. Stater Bros. is a great chain and most of its stores are great but if there is one they need to tear down it is store #25 Newport Blvd. The fact the store feels like a large 7 eleven doesn't help but to make things worse the layout is rather odd compared to most stores and the aisles barely fit 2 carts. The store is located in a good location which is why the store is still standing but for anyone who walks into this store after walking into a nicer larger store like its neighbor store on Baker or any other grocery store in the area, than you will want to run out of this store and never come back. The deals are great and the fact you don't need a savings card definitely makes a trip here tolerable, but the fact the store was built so long ago and has yet to be modernized makes going to this store a miserable experience. This store also has no Deli or Bakery but does have a full service meat department. My suggestion, go to Stater Bros. just not this one, there is another one, a better one just a mile away on Baker and Fairview and an even better one located on Brookhurst and Adams. Believe me the extra mile is definitely worth it, do not go near this store unless you like very little selection and bumping into other people's grocery carts. read more

This store is closest to home so I go here often but it is very small. Probably the smallest Stater Bros I've ever been in. The employees are always very pleasant though. It is super hard to maneuver a regular sized cart through these aisles though, lol. The smaller carts are more ideal, but run out fast on busy days. The fruit selection is decent and the store is always clean. There is plenty of parking but the stores location makes it tricky to access if you aren't familiar with the area. I love this store!!! We live in Irvine, so our nearest grocery stores are Ralphs, Albertsons and Pavilions, and our nearest markets are Sprouts and Mother's. And while I do frequent those establishments for that reason, I also make a special point to go out of my way to shop this particular Stater Bros. Firstly the size of the store is very charming. It's smaller than most, hearkening back to grocery stores of the 60's and 70's. In fact this probably would have been considered large back then. As much as I appreciate the ease of having "every food that was ever made" at my fingertips in "luxury" supermarkets boasting a king-size footprint, I can also sometimes be overwhelmed by their size and scope. Here I get to slow down and relax, knowing that I don't have a warehouse-scale space to cover in X amount of time. And yet I remain very surprised and impressed at just how much selection they do offer, given the store's more manageable dimensions. I love to cook but also have specific dietary restrictions and preferences, yet find that the majority of even certain specialty food items can be found here. If a week or two goes by that I'm only depending on Stater Bros. for my shopping, I don't HAVE to augment these errands with a stopover at any of the stores in my normal rotation. I also appreciate that the store is consistently spotlessly clean, with the merchandise neatly displayed and meticulously faced, which is particularly impressive when you consider I'm often there on a Sunday evening - after most of the busy weekend shopping just took place. And while my first impression (many visits ago) was oh my, this is a small produce department, was I surprised to find all that they manage to stock in that tighter space! I can fill my cart with go-to items such as oranges and my favorite bagged lettuce, but also readily find more uncommon offerings, such golden kiwis and organic pineapples (just to name a couple of examples from last night's outing). Additionally, I have always had good luck with the freshness of their produce; in fact some of their fruit and vegetables have been more reliable in quality than that of some of the upscale gourmet markets I will hit for specific list items! For instance, if I can't find good grapes elsewhere, I can almost certainly count on finding them here. Adding to the enjoyment, their staff has always been extremely friendly and helpful. Firstly they set an atmosphere of cheerfulness, just in their demeanor and the manner in which they always seem to be energetically attending to their job. I will overhear brief exchanges between coworkers as they cross paths with each other that definitely conveys that they actually have a genuine rapport and care about each other. And they always greet me with a smile and a hello, and go that extra mile to do something nice. Just last night a cashier pointed out to me that I only had four cans of soup, which means I was one can short of receiving the week's sale price on them. I went back and grabbed one more can and got my savings. This isn't the exception; this has been my experience from the get-go. As an aside, their canned soup selection here is better than that of all of the major chains nearest me - another example of bigger not always being better! All of these details and touches matter to me, and make me glad that I found this particular Stater Bros. last June (2019, so about seven months ago).
