I visited the Carroll Mansion a few weeks ago when my mother in law was visiting Baltimore for a…read moreweekend. None of us had been and decided to check in out when we were nearby. What is it? The home of the last surviving signer of Declaration of Independence (he lived more than 50 years after signing) and the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence - Charles Carroll of Carrollton. He lived in the house for the last 12 years of his life, and then the house went through other iterations - saloon, factory/sweat shop, vocational school, and recreation center - before becoming a museum. The house still has incredible bones, but it's rather empty. Our tour was interesting - our tour guide was clearly fascinated, passionate, and incredibly knowledgeable about Maryland history and the house and Carroll, but I wish the house didn't feel so empty. (We also found it hard to figure out how to get in to do a tour. We checked the hours online, but then there were various signs that seemed to point to the wrong entrance. We made a walk past the whole building twice before seeing someone inside through a window and just waving to ask if we could do a tour.) Overall, it was interesting, but not something you shouldn't miss if you visit in Baltimore. Definitely worth visiting if you're very interested in Maryland history or federalist architecture or Carroll himself!

From a historic site enthusiast, this place on initial glance is a bit of a letdown? Why? Because…read moreit's pretty empty. It's kind of like you are going on a realtor tour. BUT. There is a reason why. Charles Carroll was the longest lived and last to die signer of the Declaration of Independence. And the house is really nice. The staircase itself is beautiful as are some fireplaces. I believe the bedroom had a bed in it. Most of the furniture is gone because the museum closed for a couple of years because of cut funding and according to the tour guide, some locals were harassing tourists in that part of town at the time. Which really sucks. Because this guy deserves to have a nice presentation and people deserve to visit a place without being scared. C'mon Baltimore. We parked nearby in a garage and there is street parking if you can find it. Our tour guide was dressed very casually as if no one ever came (no one else came while we were there) but he knew his stuff. It was a very basic, bare-bones presentation but once he mentioned they were working on acquiring pieces and getting loans, I know this stuff takes time. As an experience, it wasn't great, but I consider it a $5 donation to getting the house back in shape. It's only open weekends from like 12-4. If one day it's back to what it sounds like it was, I'd love to come back. The house is really pretty on its own with a nice little garden in the back.

It is really focused on the specific history of Jews in Maryland. With some family ties along those lines myself, I thought it a worthwhile exhibition. The main attraction is the tour of two adjacent synagogues, which is generally twice a day. Check the times accordingly. If you're not on time for one of those tours, the museum itself is a couple of rooms, one with local history of Baltimore, and the other with a rotating exhibit which on the occasion I stopped in was focused on the Red Scare and the implications for free speech, with some interactive elements (and some people responding who clearly did not see the parallels to today). The synagogue tour takes one through historic buildings that have been through numerous iterations. One is no longer in active use, and the other holds regular services to this day. They are quite different, and both interesting. A docent-led tour held fine details on the history of the space. You can't walk into these buildings without supervision. If you ever wanted to here the word "Torah" pronounced with that Baltimore accent "O", this is the place. It was a reasonably interesting museum that I spent probably and hour and a half to two hours on (the synagogue tour is an hour). It won't be for everyone given the narrow focus, but even those without Jewish immigrants in their family tree would do well to learn a little bit about the history of this country and the people who make it work.

I had my wife join me on Good Friday, which also happened to be 1st Friday as well. We headed downtown and parked early and decided to grab a bite to eat at the Old Mill Market & Cafe prior to the event starting. After that we wandered from shop to shop, art gallery to art gallery, and Realtor to Realtors office. As we enjoyed a very pleasant evening perusing arts, crafts, souvenirs, and ogled at ads for properties far above and beyond our financial grasp. Most of the shops offered free (yup you heard right.... FREE) wine and appetizers to those that came to visit. On 1st Fridays you are allowed to wander with glass in hand from shop to shop sipping and enjoying your beverage of choice (wine, beer, or sodas). Even the local Rita's Italian Ice place gets in on the action and set up a stand on High Street downtown to hand out free ices. Now we both had a blast, and we were told that this Friday was a more subdued event because it was Easter Weekend, but that the next month there would be a lot more to see and do. The town goes all out and puts together a great event. This is a great date night event for you and that special someone!!! Leave the kids home, enjoy a nice dinner here in town, wander around and relax in the quiet & quaint atmosphere of this historic town. Take a stroll by the river, enjoy a bottle of wine at Play it Again Sams, or a drink at the Fish Whistle. You might even find Andy somewhere here in Mayberry too...LOL!!!

It is FREE to enter, FREE to walk around and the staff are very knowledgable about the history of Fells Point and Federal Hill. They do have a gift shop that is cute and reasonable in price, so pick up a little gift while your there! You would never know it was there--I passed by it the first time and didn't notice it. Then on my way back, I saw it, but it looked closed. I just tried the door and it was open so I went in. I found some awesome historical and picturesque postcards for $0.50! They also have a museum of Baltimore in the back that is entry by donation.

It is only a couple of rooms and focuses on a period from the late 1800's through early 1900's. There were some people there to give context, and one offered to look up ancestors that I might have had come through the Port of Baltimore. The limited scope of the museum means that it's not a huge destination, but I'm glad that it's there and for the right visitor it will be worthwhile.

Our party of three were the only visitors when we dropped in. A nice gentleman greeted us and gave us a tour, since there were no other visitors. The tour was short since only two rooms ( bathroom and one bedroom ) were recreated for display. Two other rooms were set up with pictures, artifacts, and poster broads. The poster broads and pictures were very informative. What made this visit so great was the information, knowledge, and history that the gentleman gave us. He is a retired lawyer that had grown up and worked in Baltimore. With his oral presentation and the poster broads, we received a comprehensive past and present history of immigration in Baltimore. Tbe gentleman believes it will take another 10 plus years to completely finish the museum. He also maintains a database of around 150,000 immigrants from Europe and Russia that had landed in Baltimore. He is more than happy to do free research for anyone seeking information about their European immigrant ancestors. The museum is only open on weekend from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Museum tour during the week or appointment with the gentleman can be arranged. Admission is free and donation is gladly accepted. Free street parking only.

Bottom Line: Blink and you might miss this little yellow gem of historic Ellicott City. Although…read moreit's small in stature, this historic building is worth a closer look. If you've ever seen the little yellow building at the intersection of Church Rd. and Main Street in historic Ellicott City, that is the Firehouse Museum. Although it's a small spot, it can leave a big impression. The 126 year old fire station is generally only open on the weekends from April through December. However, it tends to be also be open for special events like Midnight Madness in December and you can schedule private tours. The museum is staffed by volunteers and has old fire fighting equipment and a collection of toy firetrucks. The volunteers are awesome and sometimes even hand out plastic fire hats for the kiddos. Personally, I like thinking about what it would have been like to be a firefighter at this station in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Situated on a hill, fire fighters rolled the heavy equipment out of the house and downhill to bravely fight fires in the community. There is a very small, humble jar for donations on the way (which you'll only see if you are looking for it) and I bet the firehouse will appreciate a small donation to keep this historic landmark open.

This is an interesting little site that's only open on weekend afternoons during the Summer and…read moreearly Fall. Most people would miss it, especially since it's not conveniently located right on Main Street. If you do get a chance, though, it's free and worth at least one visit. The museum details firefighter history, especially that of Ellicott City. You'll see some cases with old equipment, historical artifacts, various photographs and clippings, a case of firefighter-related toys, and some information on firefighting techniques through the years. The building is only one room and its small, but the information is still interesting. I give the place four stars for two reasons. The single staff member was very nice and informative. Also, my 5-yo son was fascinated just with looking at everything. I'm not saying this is on the level of a full historic site, but it's a quaint attraction and worth the stop. So, give historic Ellicott City some love and learn a bit about the old firehouse and firefighting.
