Loved this! I got the garlic butter burger and fries with a speciality shake. I've never had such a great(and messy) burger! I just wish there was one in Ankeny or Ames. West DesMoines one is too far away as well. The fries are slender, crispy outside, soft inside and plenty in an order. The garlic butter burger is melt in your mouth goodness. Steak 'n Shake used to be one of my favorite places to eat. In the span of 1 stop it managed to go to my most disliked. My wife ordered a plain burger and it took 3 times to get it right. The prices jumped really badly for the serving of food that is received. Lastly the method to get your drink screams greedy. Having a qr code that needs to be scanned to receive your drink is dumb. After fasting then a 5 hour long appointment I was hangry and wanted food ASAP. This place was recommended to me and it was love at first bite. The burgers were so delicious, the garlic burger had a wonderful concoction smothering the top bun. I'm a fry snob (though will eat nearly anything) these small little fries had great flavor and satisfied my craving. The shakes were thick and flavorful. It was a great experience. They have some combos for cheap, I think under $4? The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was asking for ranch to dip my fries in (don't judge) and they said they couldn't give them to me unless they charged me extra for it. I've never experienced a burger establishment that charged extra for condiments. So I ate my fries with ketchup with a sad but happy semi smile. Our family went to Stake n Shake in Coralville Iowa today at almost 3 pm. We ordered at the Kiosk, the only option available. The kiosk had options to log in using phone number, email, or as guest. We live almost 2 hours away from the nearest Stake n Shake, so we ordered after selecting the continue as guest rather than waste time creating an account. it then asked for a name for the order and said that name will be called. I typed in my name, paid, and sat down to wait for our food. When the food was done the sever called out order 112. my husband and I looked at each other because it wasn't my name that was called and we were never issued a number, but we were the only ones there except for a couple that hadn't finished ordering yet. The server very rudley yelled "is that you or not". my husband went up to collect the food and she refused to hand it over without checking the order number on the receipt. We never got a reciept with a number from the kiosk. The server refused to give us our food. My husband explained that we didn't get a receipt or a number, the kiosk said my name would be called. He also confirmed what we ordered.. she said without the receipt she can't give us the food because we can't prove its ours and not grabbing our receipt was irresponsibleand not her problem. Companie policy says she needs to check our receipt first before she can serve the food.. keep in mind we were the only ones there that had already ordered, the other people were still in the process of ordering. My husband had to forcefully take the tray of food we ordered from her hands while saying we paid $42 for it and we are going to eat it while she yelled that we can't have that. At this point I walked up to the kiosk and took a picture of the screen saying it will be done by name, not number and that I would be notifying corporate at this point. She completley lost her shit. While we were eating she was walking around the restaurant yelling about how rude I am, how we could be stealing right now, how we ordered too much food anyway, and made remarks about the blonde haired children sitting over there (African American server) (mine were the only children there), before quitting on the spot and walking out because of whites like us. The manager came out, but never acknowledged or approached us and avoided the side of the store we were eating at. So my husband got up and approached her. The manager half ass apologized by saying they got a new system and their orders are supposed to show the name on their side, but are still showing up as numbers. she also said that the sever shouldn't have done that since the kiosk does not print receipts anymore, it emails them, and she should have instructed us to check our email. That was it. 1. When you order as "guest" it does not ask for email, so even then we still would have been denied our food because there is no printed number, nor number shown on screen, and email receipt is only for those with an account. it only asks for name and says that name will be called if ordering as guest without account. 2. We could confirm what the order was, and were the only possible people it could be for being the only ones there that had completed ordering. 3. the reason I ordered "too much food", not that it's any of her or your companies business, but since it was yelled about and I was shamed over... I had just gotten out of a medical procedure and hadn't had anything but water for over 24 hours. So sorry for being a really hungry cow and chosing you you I guess. But I promise we won't make that mistake again. 4. It wasn't so much food that it should have been too much work and entitled. my order was... two grilled cheese kids meals (one with apple sause cup; one with fries) and to kids shakes. 1 triple steak burger with large fry and shake. 1 BBQ burger with large cheese fry and shake, plus a cup of Chilli. if your restaurant can't handle a 4 person table ordering 1 sandwich and fry per person plus drink and a single scoop chili for one person, you shouldn't be in business. And finally...the race of my small children is none of your God damned concern and should never be brought up in a hissy fit over us still expecting our paid for food despite not having- as what turns out non existent to begin with- receipt. We were hoping to stay in town and do some shopping afterwards and enjoy the day off since we hardly ever make it out that way, but we were so shaken up by the experience that we ended the day early and drove home while I cried the whole way. read more

I used to love steak n' shake -- but the last few months... they've left a bad taste in my mouth. On June 27th, I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich through the drive thru on my lunch/dinner break at work. I bit into my sandwich once I was parked back at work and noticed a weird taste. I spit it out, turned on the over head light in my car and inspected the sandwich. There were MOLD SPOTS on the bread. I tried to call the restaurant, but apparently they close at midnight -- and nobody answered the phone. I've reached to the company on multiple levels and have gotten zero response. If you do take the chance on ordering from this particular store -- inspect your sandwiches for mold spots, because apparently the employees don't. read more

Food is priced very reasonably. $4 for a mound of fries and a "steakburger" is not a bad deal at all...if you order a side of cheese sauce, it comes in a little tiny cup. Might want to order two just to cover yourself, as one cup has never lasted me. I recommend against ordering things that aren't cooked-to-order late at night, such as the baked beans and the chili. Its painfully obvious they've been in a pot for a long time. I also believe the cottage cheese w/pineapple has been removed; too bad as it was one of the few healthful options. This is always our go to stop when going to or through iowa city. My wife loves the burgers here and I love the chili mac and cheese fries. Today I ordered the chili mac supreme. It was delicious as always. The great chili mixed with onions and cheese all on spaghetti noodles. It's great filling meal for a cheap price. I also got an order of cheese fries which are always fresh with hot cheese sauce. My wife got a prime steak burger original with bacon. She said the burger was juicy and perfect her fries were also hot and salty just the way she likes them. The wait staff is always friendly. The store is always clean and well kept. They have one of the cleaner restrooms in the area. All in all this was a great trip as always to steak and shake and I am sure we will be back any time we are in the area for some good cheap great food. read more

We went with my folks out to lunch after an appt & dad picked this place. We don't usually eat fast food but gave it a try. The girl who took our order was very friendly and did a great job. We proceeded to area where we got drinks and guy took care of us getting what we needed. Problems began when we got our burgers and they had wrong condiments. Server took them back & brought out corrected burgers fairly fast. Food was typical fast food tasting burgers & fries. My partner ordered a banana shake & it was the worst tasting shake ever. It was bright yellow and had whipped cream which looked & tasted more like a glob of white sticky artificial stuff. The ice cream in the shake must be some powdered drink mix because it sure didn't take like ice cream. Service was great, but food has a lot to be desired. I had heard so much about steak n shake but had never eaten there (I know, I know). I was in town so decided to stop in. I couldn't help but notice the floor needed a thorough commercial cleaning. The table top we were seated at had been cleaned but the floor still had fries, a half eaten cookie and some sticky substance. The service was prompt and our waitress pleasant. She conveniently offered to bring us water as we were deciding on what to order. She shouldn't have, though, as no fault of her own it tasted like it came straight from the garden hose. Despite having a large party with a lot of specifications our order came quickly and was correct. As I grabbed the mustard I noticed the top was crusted over with dried mustard and it took some effort to declog it. I'm now left wondering how often their condiment bottles are cleaned and sanitized. In summary, skip the water and opt for the drive thru as opposed to dine in. read more

Been to many different Steak 'n Shakes ever since. They have good burgers, fries, shakes, sides, and desert. They are very affordable, you can eat a lot for under $15. All the food I have tried was very good. My favorite meal is Double cheeseburger, fries, cup of chili, and split milkshake with banana and chocolate. Yummy and always walked away satisfied. They are open 24 hours so you can try them anytime you want. They also have a breakfast menu too. This was a very impressive visit! At first I was slightly deterred due to the parking lot being filled and the long line of cars at the drive thru but I'm glad I made the choice to stop in anyways. Despite the large crowd of people waiting my party of two was greeted right away and our name was put on a list. After a brief 3 minute wait our name was called and we were seated. After another 3 min out waitress arrived and had our order taken. And you guessed it! Another 3 min later we had our food! The Jamaican jerk burger and bacon lovers burger were really good. The Jamaican jerk sauce has just the right amount of sweetness without being overpowering and the bacon lovers burger was just that! Plenty of bacon! And can I just add the french fries here Are on a whole other level of good compared to other fast food restaurants and you can choose from a variety of seasonings to add to your fries. Everyone has a favorite fast food place they like to go, mainly because there isn't one of those where they live, right? Steak 'n Shake is one of mine so we didn't even contemplate stopping there on our way to Iowa City recently. Unfortunately, this time it was a bad decision. We love the burgers there and especially the fries. Guilty pleasure once in awhile and all. I think we could have loved them this time too, except the entire meal was cold when it finally arrived at our table. We saw the tray sitting in the window ready to be served, and we saw several of the other servers remind ours that she had an order up, and we saw it sit there for 15 minutes while the server was doing something else. Then we heard when she brought it to us how it takes a lot longer to prepare one of the burgers we ordered and that's why it too so long... We only ate a few bites of the cold burgers and fries before we left. The cashier asked us, as they are trained, "how was your meal?". When I said the food was cold and inedible she said, "Oh...that'll be $23.54". No apology or attempt to comp any part of it. Maybe it happens there a lot. BTW - we never saw the server again after she left us with our cold lunch. Everyone can have a bad day once in awhile, and I recognize that, but will try some other places in the area next time we drive through, and maybe try a SnS in another town, or stick with Culver's for a consistently good FF hamburger. read more
