Service on the night of 5/31/23 around 11:10pm was abhorrent. I experienced being talked to rudely, my order being incorrect, cold fries, and it was obviously too difficult to separate the food into 2 separate bags. I drove away without receiving an item that I paid for because rather than have a situation escalate with a worker, I wanted to wait to speak with a manager. I called the next day to share my experience with the manager, Jonathan, and his response was that he doesn't have problems like what I described. Basically, he dismissed me and asserted that I was lying on his employees. He didn't offer investigation nor resolution. I received cold and old chili with my meal that after tasting it once knew it was bad. I requested the waitress replace it with coleslaw but she said the manager would not allow her to. I asked to talk to the manager . Tracy, the manager said they would have to pay for the chili out of their inventory and could not replace it without charging me. I later called the customer service number and requested a return call. After nit receiving a call for 5 days. I called the general manager who said the chili should have been replaced and he would talk with Tracy about it. The rest of the food was ok overall. The waitress was very attentive. It appeared clean but the restroom needed some attention. I understand why their rating is so low. If they can't afford to replace a bowl of chili they should not be in business. read more

If I could zero stars I would, it was entirely too cold in there for starters, secondly the air vents were disgusting as well as the bathrooms. The ladies room had an odd unexplainable odor. My husband picked up a bowl of chili for me on 1/3/2023 and when he brought it home to me there was so much broth in it, with not much at all with the meat & beans truly totally disappointed with it!!! Visited for lunch and saw a sign that says to wait for seating. I did and was ignored initially and finally a waitress said that I should seat myself. No one brought me a menu or came to my table. More people came in and they were led to a table and given menus. Not sure why I was treated badly. The place was dirty, service lousy... so I finally got up and walked out. read more

Quality of food and service have really taken a nose dive here. First off, there are plenty of people working but nobody will take the time to seat you. So you just stand there and wait at the door, even with numerous tables open and workers just standing in the back talking to each other. When you finally get seated, don't expect someone to come quickly and take your order either. Or to get you refills. I spend most of the time looking for my waitress. Besides horrible service, the food has really gone down hill here. For instance, if you customize the toppings on your burger and it comes out wrong, don't expect them to recook your order. It goes back, they scrape off what u don't want and bring it straight back to you. Do they not think you can still taste the fact that the toppings you don't like were on there? Oh, and my most recent experience.... I was there for over an hour just trying to get a warm hot dog, topped with cheese, and French fries. First time, the hotdog and cheese came out cold. The service was polite and friendly, we ordered to go, and our food was cooked fast, and seeing it cooked fresh and made in front of us was great. They get a one, because the burgers were tasty. But, the restaurant was filthy. The floors are disgusting, with food and debris strewn about and especially underneath the booth tables. The manager clearly doesn't require staff to sweep the floors when the restaurant isn't very crowded. Speaking of the manager, he seems to play around with the workers instead of running a tight and clean ship. The ladies room smells like a shitty swamp, literally. It's a SNS, nothing too glamorous. Food is good. Drive thru is relatively quick, I've never been asked to pull forward. Dinning area is clean and service is quick and friendly. My kids love thier double cheeseburgers and birthday cake shakes. read more

Went there tonight with three others. The server forgot one persons entire meal and half of the others. My chicken strips were brought out cold. I told the server, he took my plate and came back two minutes later and said he MICROWAVED it for me. It seems like steak and shake as a business has upped its game in terms of value. The 2 for 3 and 4 for 4 are good values. SNS is interesting being fast food but sit down order. They are always somewhat messy with a little trouble keeping up with cleaning tables when busy yet food is a bit above normal frost food and of course real waitresses and waiters. If I could give negative stars I would. Ladies bathroom had a foul odor. No silverware was given. Tables were dirty. Salad had brown slimy wilted lettuce. Hair was found in hamburger. Waitress never came back after delivering food except to tell us she was leaving. Cook was eating on the line and handling money at the register and never washed hands. I have always loved Steak N Shake, but its service lately has left us FRUSTRATED! A couple of months ago, my daughter ate at the north Danville, Il restaurant. My daughter is extremely allergic to eggs and she informed the waitress of the issue. The waitress assured her that the dressing that came on my daughter's hamburger did NOT have eggs in it. She ate the burger and started feeling bad. It was only then that the manager informed her that the dressing was FULL of eggs! It ruined our evening since my daughter had to spend it fighting her allergic reaction. We spoke with the manager about the seriousness of food allergies and assumed this would be an isolated incident. NOT! Once again, today she ordered a hamburger WITHOUT mayo but with everything else. The hamburger had lots of mustard and catsup, so she didn't notice the mayo that they carelessly added- until it was too late. Now, she is ONCE AGAIN fighting an allergic reaction that should never have happened. I wish I could give them a rating of NO star at all, because I don't feel like they deserve even one! They obviously have no regard for the needs of their customers!! Of course they also NEVER offered a refund of any kind so not only is she suffering from a serious allergic reaction---SHE HAD TO PAY FOR IT!!!! Thanks Steak N Shake----NOT!!! I can see from the reviews that the quality of service and food have been going downhill for some time. I don't know about the inside because I go to the drive-up. I always order chili 5 ways and/or steak burger with everything. Last 2 times I ordered chili 5 ways it was so DRY! There was literally no sauce on the spaghetti. It was seasoned meat and beans, but no liquid/sauce. Nothing to coat and mix with the spaghetti.The last time I was there I ordered chili 5 ways and burger with everything. The voice at the drive-up says, "We're out of onions. The truck didn't come in today. Ok?" I said, "No! Of course it isn't ok! Both things I ordered come with onions." The First Steak and Shake in Danville, that I remember was at the corner of Main and Gilbert Streets, Since then there has been A Steak and Shake at several locations. The location didn't matter; the year didn't matter, the food has stayed the same. Comfort food in the Fast Food Genre. The menu has expanded over the years, but for the most part the food is as good as it gets. (for fast food) This Family has celebrated little league wins, Basketball, baseball, football, track wins and even the loses. We have rejoiced at the birth of new babies, and planned funerals of loved ones, at the Steak and Shake; and that's in addition to the regular weekly and or oftener visits. So if you are looking for good, fast food, don't hesitate, head your vehicle in the direction of the closest "Steak and Shake" You won't be sorry! If I could give a lower rating, I would! This place is a joke, how they still get people in the door is beyond me. I for one am done going to the one up North. First we had to wait 10 minutes to be seated, second we waited 15 minutes for someone, anyone to get our drink order. Then we had to wait 10 minutes for our drinks and them to take our order. We ordered Chili and were somewhat expecting it to come out somewhat soon. It took over 25 minutes to get it. Then our meal came out 15 minutes after that. I know I haven't mentioned it but they were not even that busy! The only thing the one waitress could do was talk about how great her tips were that day. I won't even get into the stench and foulness that is the bathroom. I'd rate their drinks but I was NEVER offered a refill either.
