Coloring and advice from kind waitress.

Was heading to Beef House and they were unfortunately closed. Found this GEM and decided to give it a try and SO GLAD we did! Great atmosphere, great value and the best waitstaff. My wife loved the catfish, the Creamy chicken soup was amazing and my daughter loved the spaghetti. My daughter spilled her water and the wait staff all chipped in to clean it up and get it handled quickly and with smiles on their faces. A waitress (that wasn't even ours) came over and was showing my girl a trick for drawing flowers. So cool that she did that when she didn't need to. She even gave her the advice, "If you ever want to do something in life, just try!" Would highly recommend giving this local, family-owned restaurant a try if you're passing through like we were.

What a great place! Hubby and I are on our way home from Peoria, IL (more reviews on that later) and we made a snap decision to stop and grab some breakfast! Hopped on Yelp and what do you know - Benjamin's popped right up. Easy drive off I-74, headed in and was surprised to see there weren't more people dining considering the cars in the parking lot. All the staff was near the kitchen and after being "checked out", we were seated after being asked if a table was ok, which it was. Our waitress came over, we ordered our waters, then looked over the menus - skillets, omelettes, French toast, pancakes, sausage, bacon all your typical breakfast fare was there. The skillets and omelettes all sounded so good! The better half decided on the Hawaiian omelette and I, the Italian. All omelettes come with hashbrowns and your choice of toast with butter and jelly. I asked for homefries and wheat toast and the better half asked for a half order (2 slices) of the French toast. No problem at all! Within 15 minutes, we were digging in. Huge omelettes filled with gooey cheese, homefries that were cooked just right (though they could have used a little more seasoning) and perfect French toast (hubby thought it needed cinnamon but I thought it was fine as it was!). Loved the vibe of the place, kinda like Mel's diner minus Mel. Everyone chatting, catching up on the neighborhood gossip, you can tell this is the gathering spot. It was fairly clean, food was good, prices were excellent... ...and I saw the fried chicken!! Next time Benjamin's, next time!!

Very good quality for what it is, a local family style restaurant. The chicken and dumpling soup was one of the absolute best I've ever had.

This is worth the 11 miles off the highway drive. Diner food, done well and our server Ada was delightful. This is small town at its best.

We finally made it up there a couple weeks ago, set reservations, they were absolutely not needed on the Friday at 7 when we went. The service was fantastic, the dessert that we got was delicious, the food was ok at best (something you could get pretty much anywhere but it's a charming little place so that alone made it enjoyable), drinks from the bar were really good. We happened to be sitting at a table with an elderly couple behind us, this guy was so incredibly rude that my husband finally looked at me and said " That guy over there is being a complete prick to the staff". He was speaking to the staff like they were beneath him, he was incredibly rude to multiple employees and my husband and I just agreed he must be a miserable human being to treat people that way. After they left, we overheard another staff member tell the table next to us that was the owner. We looked at a picture of him just to be 100% sure and sure enough it was the owner. The wife looked embarrassed, the whole section we were in was taking note of the way this guy was speaking to the staff. Talk about secondhand embarrassment, he obviously didn't have any embarrassment to begin with but the rest of the restaurant was taking notice and cringing, after he left it was discussed among the tables. His behavior was repulsive, if you run a restaurant and you talk to your employees like that on the dining room floor, you should be ashamed. If you have an issue with the way you were being served you could've taken that up with the employee somewhere other than the floor. You obviously think that you're more important than you actually are and your behavior that day was vile, even if that was the best food I've ever eaten in my life I wouldn't return after he demeaned that kid like that. To the poor kid that he treated the worst, who just laughed it off and tried to pretend like he wasn't being talked to like that in front of a dining room room full of people, your parents must've raised you right because you had every reason to not stand there and take that.

America is quickly becoming coast to coast franchises but locally owned restaurants like I & I don't just lend nostalgia to a quickly disappearing past, but give us hope for the future. I'm sure you're not reading this review for my prophesy for the future of the US, so here's a review of the food. Ah-mazing. I got the Elwood Burger Cheddar Horseradish Chive Cheese, Bourbon Bacon Jam, Grilled Onion and a side of fries. The burger was well portioned, and perfectly cooked. The toppings were to die for. We were just passing through and needed dinner but if I'm ever in whatever town this is again, I will definitely be stopping here. I can't say this is the best restaurant in town, only because I've only eaten here but my suspicion is that it is. I'm tempted to purchase the property across the street (beside the prison) just to eat here every day. I think it'd be a fair trade. Just don't pick up any hitchhikers out front.

It was a great place to have a nice solo steak dinner in West Lafayette. I don't eat steak often, but when I do, I want it to be amazing. And my steak was amazing! I got the 8-ounce Linz Heritage filet, Sam Allen style, which meant that it also came with grilled shrimp and a chimichurri. Yum yum yum to all three things. I usually order my steak medium-well, but the server suggested medium, so I went with it. Good choice! My server was very wise, even though he looked like he was still in college. Along with the steak, I got a side of grilled mushrooms, which came in a brown sauce with chives sprinkled on top. But first: I started with an heirloom tomato salad, which was served with stracciatella cheese, basil and these cool balls that looked like roe, but were actually balls of balsamic vinegar. Fancy! It was fresh and light, and the perfect appetizer to get during a summer in Indiana, when them tomatoes be poppin'. I don't know why I'm reviewing my meal backward, but just go with me, people. Before everything, you get complimentary rolls and butter. Oh man! I could have made a meal just from the bread and butter, both of which were tender and soft, and so salty and flavorful. At the very beginning of my meal, I started with an Old Fashioned, because I read that Boilerhouse Prime is known for their Old Fashioneds. This one was well balanced, and came with a nice bourbon cherry. I also got a glass of Malbec along the way with my meal, which went well with my steak. This seems like an adults-only restaurant, but I was sitting close to a big table that had a family with kids, so well-behaved kids are definitely allowed, even though I did not see a kids menu.

Last time I got the lobster bisque and it may have been the best I've ever had. I ordered it again and it was terrible. Just terrible. Tasted kind of bitter and was much too dark for a lobster bisque. The side dishes are enormous and they were all ok. The charred broccoli is an entire stalk thrown on a grill. Char on outside, raw on inside. Lovely. My American Wagyu bone-in strip was good, though it tasted no different than prime meat and did cost $95. I would have hoped for better than just 'good'. Family enjoyed most items. I sampled the wedge and really liked that. Probably best part of the meal. Oysters were excellent. Drinks are always good here. They have upgraded their rum list and have some high quality ones now. That's great! Service is always top notch. I will definitely be back for happy hours. The food at this restaurant is good. But when 2 adults and 3 kids drop $800 on a meal, it really ought to be fantastic, not just good.

They were well-plated, but huge. And yet...the veil didn't slip. It was haute-cuisine comfort food goodness in what looked like a converted warehouse space. Unreal! Though turkey is often too dry, my stroganoff was moist and succulent. The sauce was much more than just cream of mushroom -- lots of flavor and not too much salt. We had a time of it.
