What can improve? Everything. I love Steak and Shake. We go there a lot when we are traveling for something fast and yummy. It breaks my heart that the one in my home town is so awful. I was there today and got to listen to what appeared to be the manager and an employee have a disagreement. My daughter had to go in to get items that were missing that I paid for and she said it was still going on. We got our drinks and then had to move up for our food. Two burgers kids meal and two fries. The burger was so salty (and I love salt) that after two bites I gave it to my dog. Add to that the bottom bun was actually wet from grease to the point it wasn't edible. The burgers were so Slippery they came out of the bun more than half way in the bag. My daughter got the frisco melt which is so delicious normally but it too was wet and soggy and not browned on the outside. No one enjoyed their meal. When my daughter had to go back in to get what was missing there was no apology and they acted like she was an annoyance. The staff who brought our food to the car never said a word, never smiled, handed it to me with a sour face and walked away. Customer service doesn't cost a thing. Being pleasant. Smiling. Saying thank you or I'm sorry is so easy. I know this is locally owned and operated which makes me want to go there but I'm afraid that is my last trip to my hometown location. On Jan 2, 2021 around 1:30 PM, I ordered an Original Double 'n Cheese Steakburger 'n Fries with everything on it and additional pickles on the side. I got a plain, single patty burger with nothing on it and no additional pickles. I also got no receipt with order number. I called the restaurant back at 4:40 PM and reported the mistake. I spoke to a man who responded with silence. After about a 15-second pause, I said "hello?" "I'm here," he said." "What can you do for me," I asked--quite surprised at the dead air emanating from the other end of the phone. He said, "well the burger was fine, right? You were just missing the produce." Several more seconds of silence followed. Just missing the produce?! Wrong is wrong and a dissatisfied customer is even worse in the food industry. This is the second time in three months we have visited this location and not received the correct order. Other times, we haven't gotten napkins or ketchup in our carry-out orders--that's annoying as well. I understand they can get busy at times and/or understaffed and mistakes can be made. What you can't do is give me what I wanted at the time I wanted it because it's not practical to drive back at that moment. However, one thing you can do is offer to compensate me on a future visit for the incorrect order. To me, this is just prudent customer service. This happened last time and is an acceptable response to me. This time, though: nothing. More than anything else, I am incensed by the lack of response from the guy with whom I spoke. If he was not the manager or shift leader then perhaps he should have transferred the call. If he was the person in charge then he should disciplined. I e-mailed feedback on the website over two weeks ago: no response. I've tweeted their social media account twice in the interim: no response! It seems the apathy and lack of customer care goes farther than just our local restaurant. All they had to do was say "we're sorry" and comp a $4 order. They would have retained a long-time customer and avoided a 1-Star review on social media for all to see. They failed. Biglari Holdings currently owns Steak & Shake and I've read a couple articles over the last several months talking about their losses and disappointing financials. That's an unfortunate reality in this COVID-19 world, but I think their corporate culture/structure has other issues. Should Steak & Shake end up a has-been, I won't be surprised one iota. read more

Today I went to the N. Marketplace (Lansing, MI) has unusual,long wait time to make an order and there was a sign that said short staffing will cause long wait times which I understand. However, after sitting at order window 5 min. I drove up to pay window, a staff lady with short, red hair very rudely said no I need to go back to window. She didn't apologize or anything for my waiting. I came 11/26 and had to wait so long also. Actually I have periodically came through drive through since last year and you continue to have the short staff issue. Corporate needs to get involved and make a more conscious effort to hire and keep staff. read more

I can't in good conscious give them any lower than two stars due to the virus restricting their operations (unless it was something really heinous, which it wasn't). But when the app says fifteen minutes and you take another twenty-five beyond that to get me my food, you have a problem--even when you allow an extra five or ten due to being backed up. Great food... if you can get it (good luck). Don't come here unless you are willing to wait at least 20-25 minutes in the drive thru. Not sure what happened because it used to be like a normal steak n shake (taking slightly longer than a normal fast food place but a small price to pay for higher quality!) But this one just randomly closes, and sometimes you will wait 10 min in the drive thru before you realize the line never moves at all. To be crystal clear, I really like their burgers, shakes, cheese fries and cherry cokes with actual cherry syrup. I just wish they liked their customers enough to sell them to us! Corporate should intervene and take away their franchise and give it to someone who can better represent this great brand. I'm sorry, but y'all are DUMB. D-U-M-B just in case you didn't know how to spell it. First of all, all but one of our sandwiches were wrong. We ordered four. One sandwich we asked for everything EXCEPT for onion and they put ONLY onion on the sandwich. That was the worst one. They also shorted us a drink, and messed up and gave us a coke instead of a Dr Pepper on one of the drinks they actually remembered to give us. All of this was AFTER they confirmed our order (which was correct when they read it back, after we corrected three things). The double cheese burger with bacon was prepared to my specifications. The entire order was correct. Service was prompt (thanks, Savannah!) and pleasant. I got to sit down and eat, and was out in 30 minutes. This was from 11:50 am to 12:20 pm on a weekday. Pretty impressive!
