I've eaten in many Steak 'n Shake but the Niles, OH location has become a disappointment. I ordered, for carryout via the app, two single steakburgers w/cheese. The toppings weren't even close to being centered on the sandwich. Two shakes were wrong, wrong, wrong!! Chocolate one was not chocolate, in fact, I'm not sure what flavor it was. The Reese's Peanut Butter Cup had a vague peanut butter taste. Each shake was specifically ordered with whipped cream and a cherry which were not included. Fries were so, so. With prices going sky high I'm better off making a burger at home. I don't eat out much and this experience invites me to stay home. read more

Ordering with a person would be much better than a kiosk, very un personable. Fries were cold and the portion was not even close to equal for the same size, the meat had a weird taste with the bun crown hard and the drink center is a joke. Having to scan a code that doesn't work well, only to not even come close to filling a regular glass from the Coke but with the Dr Pepper, filling a regular glass and the counter attendant saying she couldn't do anything about it. We've eaten there in the past when visiting from PA and liked it very much. His is the first time in quite a while visiting and now know, we won't be back. At some point, Steak n Shake switched to paper straws but they're so tiny it's hard to get anything through them. One of our shakes had Oreo chunks in them and we couldn't use the straw at all. Terrible execution. If you go paper, you can't use tiny straws. read more

The #1 zagat rated milkshakes had a soft serve Wendy's Icey consistency good flavor taste just like the flavor but some weren't mixed well so the flavor was at the top but not in the middle and the bottom. I prefer to stick with the traditional real milk 'ice cream' shakes. The fries were very well flavored Cajun and garlic parmesan were delicious the size of the fries are literally half the size of mc Donald fries. This is the most ridiculous place to eat. No servers you order at the counter sit yourself.. the bathrooms were soooooooo nasty!! Piss and shit all over the place... everything was dirty.. As far as burger joints go, I suppose this place is okay. When you walk in, there is a heavy smell of cooking grease. My husband ordered a burger; I ordered a grilled cheese with a side salad. The "butter spray" they grilled the sandwich on was remniscent of Denny's. The fries were shoe-string, but short and a bit on the hard side, with no seasoning. The salad was a bit grim - premade ranch dressing, sad iceberg, too much shredded cheese. The staff seemed depressed. The restrooms were clean, though. I will say that the milkshake we ordered was great. They definitely have their milkshakes down pat. If you love milkshakes, then I would recommend ordering one. If you are sensitive to the smell of greasy cooking orders, I would avoid this place. And if you are looking for fresh fare that is not stody, definitely stay away! read more

What a difference a year can make! This manager seems really to have turned this ship around. We've been grabbing take out from this joint for the last week and it has been wonderful every time! When you keep odd hours like our family you really appreciate a good joint for late night cravings! I highly recommend the mushroom and Swiss burger! I do no onions but I get extra garlic mayo! It's to die for! Rhyan is loving the Royal Steakburger-- she loves the fried egg on top! Another great test here is the yummy chili cheese fries. We spilt them as a side and they are perfect! I've been here a few times over the last few years and it has always been hit or miss. Sometimes the food is overly greasy. I know it is diner food but the bun of your burger shouldn't be sopping wet. That only happened once. I mean, it is what it is. A fast and cheap option that when its on can be pretty tasty, when it's not you will regret it. I will say that I agree with a previous reviewer that things have changed . I had pretty terrible service over a year ago and didn't go back for a long time. Recently before a movie we stopped because we didn't have much time and I have to say it was a much better experience and the food kinda hit the spot. If you are looking for a cheap diner experience Id suggest giving it a go. Just know that it is what it is. You aren't going to get a gourmet burger here. You will get an old fashion diner style burger that they dress up to look gourmet. And do a half way decent job at it. read more

Service is consistently declining. Visited on a Wednesday night, tried to go through the drive thru. The girl over the speaker said it was closed for maintenance. I didn't see any maintenance. So I went in, and was told by another girl that they have to close it when they're busy- I've come through here multiple times on busy nights and never had a closed drive thru. At the time of entering there were 8 people- 4 tables total. There were at least 5 employees plus a manager present. So why was the drive thru closed? I didn't get an apology for the inconvenience or a reasonable explanation. Seems to me that work is being skirted. I ate at Steak N Shake with my wife on Monday, Aug 31, 2015 @ 6:30 PM. It wasn't busy inside, but none the less it took between 10-15 minutes for the waitress to come by. We placed our order & asked for separate checks. The meal was ready in a very reasonable amount of time, but the hamburger had the wrong toppings on it and she forgot my chocolate milkshake plus the receipt she brought was not separated. I reminded her to bring the shake out when she returned with the corrected burger. The food was good as usual. She brought the corrected burger back (no milk shake) but brought the separated bills. After 10-15 minutes I made eye contact with her & she realized she has forgotten the milk shake on the counter. She brought the shake by & never said a word, just put it on our table & walked off. When my wife was checking out she tried to get change for a $5 for a tip, but the cashier totally forgot. After my wife paid she walked off & did not come back. I paid for my meal & was able to get the change we needed. In the past, we have always received better service. Not sure what happened tonight. read more

Pleasantly surprised I must say. I was here went it first opened many years ago and only had a shake. A few days ago my wife suggested we take the kids so of course I was on board so I could write about it. We dined in and the place was very vibrant and clean. It was semi busy but we were seated right away. Immediately the waitress brought our menu's along with vintage Chevy cars made of cardboard for the kids to put together and adorn with stickers that came with them. Great idea! Now the food. I ordered the Western BBQ double burger with a chocolate-banana shake. The burger was great. It was two patties topped with smoked bacon, fried onion strings and BBQ sauce. Much better than I expected and better than McDonald's or BK in my opinion. The shake was smooth and creamy goodness topped with whipped cream and a cherry. I was not disappointed. My wife and kids had regular burgers and fries and were not disappointed either. My wife had the Snickers shake.......Oh mama was it good. The prices were great....again pleasantly surprised. The have four different platters for $3.99. My wife new this which is why she wanted to go. It was cheap but of course I chose one not on the specials menu but it was still on $5.49. Another plus is that from 2PM-4PM, shakes are half off and we were there in between this time frame. Bonus! If I haven't mentioned already, I was pleasantly surprised at the whole experience. There's nothing like a greasy Steak N Shake burger paired with those pencil thin fries and a shake! My reason for the three is the fact that this place is a chain and there's never anything too entirely spectacular about chains, though they know how to succeed and maintain a following. The burgers are good and the shakes are fabulous, but I mostly long for the fries. (Of course. Anyone who knows me is entirely unsurprised by this confession.) Inexpensive place to take your family. Milk shakes are wonderful. You can usually get a meal under $5.00. Better then going to McDonalds or Burger King , service is generally good and fast. Their restaurant is clean (this is my highest compliment), their milkshakes are awesome, their food is good, their prices are excellent, and their service is hit or miss which is why this review is not a 5 Star. I do not recommend the drive thru - it is not a quick alternative. I also don't think it should be used that way. The only reason I've giving 3 stars is because now you sit in the drive-thru for about 30 minutes. I get because of Covid this is how things are now. But if you make some one sit and wait that long for their food the least you can do is make sure it's fresh. The last 2 times my husband and I came here we waited for way to long and our fries were so cold I was so mad. They keep this up and they are going to lose business and our milkshakes were almost melted. If it's taking so long to make the burgers then maybe you should put the fries down a few minutes before the burgers are done and make the milkshakes while the fries are cooking if your making shakes that take a few minutes. There is no need to make a bunch of fries and leave them sit for every one and the make your shakes when you order them then the whole time your waiting your shake is melting. Or at least give you the shakes when you pay if they make them that first. I HATE COLD FRIES AND MELTED ICE CREAM. Especially when you have to pay so much for them and wait so long. I do not recommend. they have very poor service. I was there I had to wait over almost an hour to get my food through the drive thru and when I got my food all of it almost ice cold none of it was even warm!!!!!!!!!!!!! I ordered a root beer and I got Dr Pepper with too much carbonation it !!!! When I went in to fix our order I had to wait another half hour before I got my two sandwiches back that works properly and while I was in there one of their cook that was making the burgers wiped his nose on his glove and then rub his hands and then continue to cook the food I was appalled to say the least!!!!!!! I called the manager over to let him know about this and he nodded his head at me and then walked away and didn't even say anything to the cook therefore the cook continued to finish cooking with the same gloves on that he wipes his Nose with!!!! The Niles Ohio location is absolutely disgusting! I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with mushrooms. Actually received a grilled cheese sandwich with onions. It got sent back and returned having the onions picked off. It still tasted like onion AND they didn't even pick them all off. They picked at it instead of making a new one and even sent the now cold fries that were on the plate back with it. On top of that our group watched from our table as the cook stuffed his face with food while standing over customer food at the grill. Never going there again. The saliva from his repeatedly putting food in his mouth while cooking transfers to his hands and gloves and makes its way to customer food and plates. Just plain GROSS!! ZERO stars!! read more

1st of all, the only reason this has 2 (3 now) stars is because of the nice waitress and the low prices. Usual wait on food is usually about 10 min since the smash the patties so thin but today (and the clarify it was NOT busy at all) we waited over a half hour only to find out that they "lost our ticket". So they made (very quickly and very sloppily) our food. I've never in my life had that greasy of a burger ( mc Donald's are less greasy than this one today), in return to a greasy burger the bun was as soggy as a wet dollar bill. So not happy with the food at all today! Very disappointed! This place is lucky to have some nice staff and give out coupons to get people in since it has gone way way downhill. Some people may still love this place but this is my review and it's truly how I feel. I'll be back for the shake but never coming back for the steak! We went to pay and told the manager what happened ( like he didn't know, he was on the back line when the waitress went back to see where our food was) but he took our sandwiches off the bill. Had absolutely horrible service tonight. Took forever to take our order and we were sitting there for 20 minutes before we got our drinks. The waiter did not give us any silverware and then everytime she would put something on the table she would walk away before anyone had the chance to ask for anything! When we did ask for something she would hurry up and set something down on the table and walk away without asking if we needed anything else. On top of it all she messed up our bill.
