Ok. I've been thru the drive-thru a couple times recently and exited (did not have time to wait)...so no food orders to talk about. I thought I would go in last night and grab a milkshake but wanted to visit the restroom first. Uhhh.... unbelievable really. The restroom looked like it had not been cleaned in one year... No kidding. The sinks were filthy. The walls were filthy. The floors were filthy. The toilet areas were unusable. Needless to say, I would never consider getting anything from this restaurant just from a hygiene point of view. It's a sad reflection on poor management and poor corporate support. I don't know how Steak and Shake are corporately structured... This could be a local franchise. I really don't know. Regardless I would not purchase any food from this establishment... No way. This was another tough review to write. Over all if they had a beautiful young waitress to flirt with me er...I mean take my order you would be reading a 4 and quite possibly a 5 star review. Had the fries not been hot and the tomato sliced more thick than they do at Burger King this would be a 2 star review at best. I'm not a fan of shoestring fries. The French fries did taste good. That's a personal preference and in no way has in weight on my review. My burger was not sloppily thrown together like I've gotten used to at Burger King. I could tell the cook took pride in his work. If you are a manager at BK my suggestion is that you steal a cook or two from S&S. I liked the fact they had Coke Zero. I did NOT like the additional charge for cherry, nor did I like the extra charge for extra sauces. That's an easy fix, I'll just bring some from BK they're not stingy with sauces. The catsup paket was nearly impossible to open, good thing I Cary a pocket knife.Perhaps some senior friendly packaging for sauces is the solution. I wasn't a fan of the way the floor creaked as I walked to my table. But I did see a young man cleaning the dinning room , which I didn't see at BK on my last visit. Over all I had a nice meal at a reasonable cost, though I paid nearly as much for my mom's small strawberry shake as I did for my meal..as a sidenote as a first time user of the app, I found it rather clunky not user friendly and found it impossible to get my free shake .It took forever to put my debit card in. i love coming in to eat when i have the time! my boyfriend and i stopped here for lunch and we had a wonderful time. i love both the burgers and chicken fingers, but i always have to have the fries and milkshakes too! even though there are no servers anymore, the people we interacted with were very nice! we have always loved the look of the place. the new technology was a little confusing at first, but we got the hang of it. read more

I had come to this particular store for years, but hadn't been in a couple so we stopped while school shopping. there were 4 of us. no more servers, you order on a kiosk, yet they still want a 10% (minimum) tip. no ice in the soda machine, tables were filthy, and staff was moving slower than molasses; not a care in the world. then you wait for an HOUR before you ever even get your shakes. the food once we got it was cold, I had orders 2 sides of ranch that they charged me .59 a piece for, but didn't get it. when I asked for it she said "sorry we won't have any ranch until tomorrow" wouldn't that be something you'd tell your patrons when they order it? if you're going to have longer wait times, fine but let folks know that. another couple waited nearly as long as we did but left. but of course they couldn't get refunded right away; 3-5 business days. excuse me? you're able to deduct funds from my account immediately so if we want a refund due to poor, slow service, then those funds should be transmitted right back to the account from which it came. it's so sad to see such an iconic staple reduced to utter garbage. never again will we ever come to this location, and pray other stores are doing better. if I give 0 stars, I would. read more

Terrible way to take orders through drive through after waiting at least 30 minutes. First time complained about all ingredients that were on the burger and the woman manager was short. Wow! I'm actually sitting here getting a full show of attitudes! We waited 15 minutes on our table because Brittany, one of the servers, had a meltdown that when she started to bus a table she found out they did not tip her. She left while we stood waiting patiently and then other servers cleared their tables and people were eventually able to sit, as there about a dozen waiting. Then she went over to pick up food and loudly complained about being stuffed by this table. Another patron went up to her server and tipped her $10 personally bc she and the rest of the servers were running around chaotically. The staff seems mixed with professional vs unprofessional. If there was a manager anywhere you'd never know it! The floors are littered behind the bar and in front of the food pickup station. Flies and sticky tables and glassware make it hard to believe it's clean. I won't be back and actually it's not bc of the food this time! This is the place you go if you're not hungry, because by the time you get served, you'll be starving. The waiter's opening statement that he was comping our drinks should have been a warning. It was appreciated, but there's twenty minutes of my life I'll never get back. Steak n Shakes that are open 24 hours attract huge groups who have nowhere else to meet and can't afford Denny's. This has been true in multiple States. This location is just the latest example. Do not go late and expect any reasonable amount of service. They are consistently under-staffed to meet the crunch times, and a group of 10 will cause crunch time. The food is usually good, I'm just wondering if it's worth the pain. After all, White Castle will be open in a few hours. Update: Our food arrived about ten minutes after I posted this review. My bacon cheeseburger was good, my wife's burger was cold. When we checked out, I mentioned the wait and the cashier verified our server had comp'ed our drinks. I will never come to this location again. For starters, we sat at the drive through window (AT the window, not just in line) waiting for our food for 14 minutes AFTER we had paid. Our food came with a brief and insincere "sorry." Then I walked inside to use the restroom. The entire restaurant was just filthy and disgusting. The floor was coated with such a thick layer of grease, I was afraid I might fall (and land in the grease and smashed food that was everywhere). The bathroom was awful as well. Never again. This place is awful. My friend and I went there for a quick dinner tonight and we waited a while to even be seated and it was not busy at all. The lady who sat us was just rude and ended up being our waiter. All of the servers were complaining about each other and fighting. From what we heard there was an employee there that took tips off of a table that didn't belong to them and they were fighting about it. The place was very dirty and gross. A typical Springfield place but if you were hungry like we were you'd go with it haha. The only good thing there was how fast the food came out. From my experience tonight, it is my opinion that this location has demonstrated serious quality control and food handling safety issues. Unacceptable kitchen food preparation practices were plainly observed that warrant serious avoidance, and I caution anyone from visiting until this facility's management takes their staff's indifference to safe food handling habits seriously, to include the firing of kitchen staff and/or shift managers who are permitting such action. Steak 'n Shake is a name we've come to associate with a higher standard than the typical fast food burger joint, but sadly, this restaurant seriously tarnishes this good reputation with it's negligence. We've reviewed two other locations in the Dayton Metro (with many revisits) and have found them to be consistently reliable above average performers. However that not withstanding, this location is nothing short of horrific. I will never return to this location. I ordered a burger pictured to be the mother of all cheeseburgers, the cheesey cheddar burger. The photo in the menu looked like something from the heart attack grille, with melted cheese thickly draping down the sides well to the plate over two patties. My burger arrived suspiciously at room temperature (I later saw why, see last paragraph) with a silver dollar sized circle of cheese so tiny we thought they had made the wrong burger. As the cards fell, the cook had intended this to be the correct menu item, he apparently just didn't care about his work or about the menu description. When asked to remake it, we later discovered the chef simply took the old burger, smothered new cheddar on top of the old and microwaved it which caused the old cheese to somehow get as hard and dried out as leather, as I would find out when I bit into the middle. The manager was notified but couldn't be bothered to personally speak to us even though the place was dead. Our served removed it from our check, and offered to replace it but by then I feared what the cook would do to my replacement food. My logic was if that was the kind of work he did when he wasn't provoked, how much worse would his ethic be when his pride was irked? I ate around the center, without having to worry, thank you, and vowed never again. I absolutely KICK myself for not being able to take a photo of the burger before being sent back, it was so pathetic! I had also substituted onion rings for fries, which surprise, the cook also forgot, so those came out after the cheese incident. Oh crap, right? I had unwillingly subjected myself to his "wrath" and he lived up to my expectations of him. See the photo of the pool of (very dirty) grease he left me as a present in the photo section. It was as if he didn't even bother to drain them at all! Absolutely gross. Appetite gone. What did I expect? --HELLO, HEALTH ISSUE!-- Lastly and most concerning, I saw why my burger came out room temperature and understood why with what I thought was only one blast of a commercial microwave the original cheese turned as hard as leather. The grill and prep line is perpendicular to the register granting anyone an unobstructed full view of their noticeably unoccupied kitchen. I observed they were storing pre-cooked basic burgers in buns on the edge of the grill (it was a very slow night after all, who knows where the cooks were) on the unheated part on the other side of the grease channel. For those who have seen a commercial grill, this is an unheated area unintended for food to sit, where the spatulas usually rest temporarily, and that is what they were doing to save time and/ or product, it appeared, if they made more than they needed. Forget making food to order, they pre-make it, goof off when it's slow, and try to be minimally inconvenienced with their actual responsibilities.The burgers were unattended to, unheated, no heat under or over, completely irresponsible and unsafe. My original burger probably sat there for quite some time before they reheated it for the first time in the microwave (unbeknownst to me) and let it sit long enough to come back to room temp as they cooked other parts of our order they didn't have waiting around, before the initial presentation. Upon receiving it back, they put new cheese over the old and microwaved it a second time, which would explain the cheese being as hard as leather. Anyone who has tried to reheat cheesy leftovers knows cheese only survives one microwaving usually before getting dehydrated, greasy and hard. That my friends, is one gross mystery solved. --CONCLUSION-- Clearly, this location has bigger problems than microwaving food when they should be remaking it. Letting meat sit at room temperature until someone orders it on a slow night is not an acceptable practice. The other stuff was just quality control. The latter is a health issue. This place should expect a visit from the health department soon. read more

My golf team and coach stopped at this location for dinner and milkshakes as a treat for our solid play over the course of our conference championship tournament. Our usual stops are at places like Wendy's and Burger King, so this was supposed to be a (small) step up, and we were all incredibly hungry. I can safely say this is one of the worst Steak 'n Shakes in existence, and both Burger King and McDonald's would've blown it out of the water in every category. It took our waitress about fifteen minutes to get water to our table (of six), which she brought without straws. The lack of straws wasn't a huge deal, but one of my teammates asked for one, and she said she would bring them for everyone. She proceeded to come back a few minutes later with four straws, and after handing them all out and realizing she was short two, she said "oops, I miscounted." At that point, I knew we were in trouble. I ordered the barbecue burger, which I've had before, along with an Oreo shake, which I was very excited about. Like I said, we don't usually get the opportunity for delicacies like milkshakes ("Not going to fit in the budget," our coach always claims), so this was a big deal. Everyone else ordered milkshakes as well, and we waited eagerly for them all to arrive. A little while later, the shakes showed up, and another waitress came with our original one to oversee their delivery, seemingly realizing her coworker's ineffectiveness at getting things right. I'm still not 100% sure what was in my milkshake, but all I can say is that it was not by any means a purely Oreo shake. I can't describe exactly what the other taste was, but after examining the color of the beverage, I noticed a yellow twinge throughout most of it, leading me to guess banana (which, consequently, is about the only flavor of milkshake I would NEVER order). This ticked me off, but, because I was so sure of our waitress's incompetence, I didn't alert her to the error (I still maintain that she took down the order wrong, and that it wasn't the fault of the kitchen, but I could be wrong). I didn't finish the shake, which was depressing, considering it was one of the main reasons our team picked the restaurant. The burgers came a few minutes later, and were actually decent. Mine was a tad overcooked, but it was smothered in bacon, cheese, and barbecue sauce, so it was bearable, plus, who really goes to a Steak 'n Shake for the meat quality? Anyhow, when doing our next Indiana to Ohio drive for a tournament, we will not be stopping here. I truly hope things improve at this location, because at this rate, I can't imagine it will continue to turn a profit. read more

This location has been awful for years!! Yet, once a year we give it a shot again and every time we leave ticked off. First and foremost, something needs to be done about speeding up the milkshake making process. Every single time my husband gets his shake just as he is taking the last few bites of his meal. That is totally inexcusable. Waitresses rarely check back and they never pre-bus. Cleanliness is also another issue. Nothing like being seated in a booth that is sticky. The bathrooms are never clean. It's a damn shame because we love the food and would go more often but the management and training are just non-existent at this location. Tonight, the wait staff was not on their A-game. Took a while for food to come out, and it seemed that our waitress has a large section. I had to send my burger back because it came out plain, and it was a Smokey BBQ sandwich that I ordered. But, this is still not my worst experience at a Steak N Shake. I expect food cooked to order to take a while to come out. Our waitress was clearly over worked and under paid and under appreciated, but she still had a smile on her face and did her best. She came by often to check on us and even gave me free fries because the cooks messed up my burger. This location has a high turnover rate, despite being on the Bechtle strip. I've never had a bad server experience at this location and I'll keep coming back as long as I live in Springfield. read more

My family had a horrible experience at the Springfield location. We arrived at 7pm- there were several open tables and multiple tables that needed cleaned. It took ten minutes before anyone acknowledged us. They say us then at an open table in the corner, and with the amount of open tables (meaning not as many customers) we thought we'd likely get our drink orders taken quickly. This was not the case however- after sitting another 30 minutes without anyone checking on us we left. I can understand slow service if the restaurant is packed, however this was certainly not the case. This experience was unacceptable, and we will not go back. read more

Walked into them wiping my table with a filthy "rag" as they called it and was seated with a soaked table and no place mats. I took it upon myself to grab them. Returning to my table I almost fell because the floor was either wet or filthy. I ordered an orange cream shake that was overflowing and tasted like chocolate. The servers (EVERY ONE OF THEM ON DUTY) were so rude to each other and the manager was reprimanding them very loudly in the dining room. Overall the experience was horrible and I refuse to return. We had 9 people in our party. So 4 tables were moved together. Our waitress, Brittany, stood at the end of the 4 tables and took everyone's drink order. She came back to the table and passed the drinks from the first person clear to the end. So everyone on my side of the table touched my drink. Then she stood at the end of the table and took our orders so we are yelling our orders to her. Then she repeats them back while telling us she has laryngitis but talked fine when away from our table. When she came back to the table she passed our food down the line so then again everyone touched my food. There was another girl helping her and she carried food down the other side of the table.
