Steak n Shake has changed so much since I worked there 22 years ago. Gone are the servers and silverware. This restaurant has kiosks for ordering and you walk up to get your food. You scan a barcode from your drink ticket if you ordered a fountain drink. This prevents people from stealing soda, I suppose. It's more of a hassle than anything. Regardless, this is an affordable, no frills fast food joint with a drive-thru for people on the go. The food is still good. We've visited this location for the past two Saturdays, as a new tradition following my toddler's soccer sessions. We ordered the double steak cheeseburger with fries and my son enjoyed a chocolate milk and French fries (he won't eat anything else, unfortunately). This last time, we brought a friend, and she ordered cheese fries and a Nutella milkshake. I went with the chocolate milkshake. My only complaint is that too heavy on the condiments on the hamburgers. my burger had so much mustard I had to scrape it off. We hope to keep returning here following our weekly soccer sessions, but if we find another place with food my toddler will eat, we might decide to switch it up. read more

Mike, the manager and grill cook served a steak burger that had grill residue in the form of burnt charred chunks of meat in the sandwich. After biting into one, I took it back to Mike. Mike was not happy. Instant attitude. He did make me another sandwich that he literally threw together. So sloppy, he had mayonnaise all over the top of bun and pickles half on half off bun. If you grew up in Tampa or have been here for many years, no doubt you found your way to a Steak n Shake at 1 am or so. The Northdale restaurant burned down a number of years ago and without fanfare, reopened with a lot of changes. Instead of waiter/waitress service, you order and pay at a Kiosk and have a seat. When you name or number is called you get your order. In reality, this is better because, no joke here, they always got my order wrong. On this visit, the fries were cold and the very nice person replaced the fries with a new order. The place had only a couple tables with people but the majority of the tables were not clean. Seeing that this location was reopened we were excited!! Loved me some of their shoestring fries back in the day. Not so great now. Bleh! This is fully self service! No wait staff. You walk in and place your order at the touch screen kiosks and choose dine in or take out. There are dimes tables and booths available. And the staff that is there seems to do the bare minimum which I will get into detail within my review. - Tables are not cleaned after folks leave so if dining in be prepared to either wipe the table down yourself or eat on a dirty table. - Staff will see you standing at the counter for help and ignore you - Cups at the drink station needed refilling while we were there but nobody cared to restock. - Honor system for the drink station -- cups are there for you to take yourself and get a drink. Nobody monitors. - Staff doesn't pay attention to the order since 2 things were wrong with our order although clearly spelled out on the ticket that was on the tray with the food. DOH!! Ordered 3 steak burgers -- 2 singles with fries and 1 a double with chili. My daughter also got a vanilla shake. The tables were not clean so we chose the one that looked the cleanest. While we waited for the food, we went and got our drinks from the drink station. Food was up and hubs immediately noticed that his burger was not correct. He ordered grilled onions but it had fresh onions. Waited and waited and staff just passing by in the prep area. Eventually got the attention of a female that was walking by that appeared to be a manager perhaps. She called the prep guy over and discussed to which the guy pointed out that if we lifted the tomato the burger had grilled onions also. WHAT lol. Ok whatever. So we sit down and begin to eat when hubs then noticed his isn't a double like what he ordered. Ugh. Go back up and they just put another patty on the burger he already had. Hubs burger was also missing the lettuce and tomato he ordered. It was just not a day for him to have a good burger lol. The fries were overcooked! The tomatoes were sliced so thick that they were thicker than the patty. And they weren't ripe! We pulled those off. The only good thing was the vanilla shake. Let's just say we won't be back for the food until they get this place operating better. Less than 1. Don't go. As many have they only do electronic kiosks. And as is often the case after I input 9 customized orders, the machine won't take my payment. The staffs suggestion, move to a different machine sometimes this one doesn't work. They could call are less that I stood here for 10 mins trying to order. I ordered a cookie milkshake this time, and got a brown colored, slightly tangy...something. Idk what to even describe this as. There was whipped cream and none of the toppings pictured. My partner got the same one and it tasted a little like peanut butter and that tang flavor, almost orange? My sister got a chocolate shake and it's straight up peanut butter. They clearly had put whipped cream on it that she requested to not be there, and you can see where they literally took something and scooped it off the top. This place is horrible! From the start the doors are are dirty walking in. Then the floors are sticky - not just in one spot EVERYWHERE! They use a nasty dirty mop to "clean" the floors. The tables are always dirty - we had to clean our own. The bathrooms are disgusting. After all this you're not sure you even want to eat the food. The food was just ok. I had a fresco and they didn't bother to cut it. Sodas and ice were out. You have to scan a code to even use the machine. Basically it's An automated system with as little human interaction as possible. If you need something, don't bother no one is coming. read more

Honestly so relieved to see this location is finally open! I've been hooked since it came online for delivery and haven't had a subpar experience yet. Steak N Shake is known for their smash burgers- delightfully thin and crispy patties and fries to match. I've recently been ordering the double steakburger double cheese and haven't been disappointed yet or done wrong. The fries are always good regardless of temp, but are usually warm when they arrive here. I've gotten in the habit of ordering cheese sauce with them which makes them even more enjoyable! The shakes have honestly been the only downside to my visits, as the strawberry tasted like Nesquick- very artificial. The snickers I tried as well and it tasted like I was eating plastic, not sure what was up with that as everything else has been good. Overall, definitely not the worst Steak and Shake I've been too and I'll keep ordering from here until they do me dirty and badly mess up an order. read more

I would like to give this restaurant a good rating, but I can't. We didn't like eating in the restaurant (lousy and dirty atmosphere) so we decided to order with Uber Eats. We ordered $43 worth of food, and they left at least HALF of the items out of the bag. We missed drinks, fries and onion rings. The sandwiches did make it into the bag, but that was about it. Sooo... since we didn't have enough food, the wife had to cook anyway. They must be really sloppy. Anyway, don't order from them to be delivered by Uber Eats if you expect to get enough food for your meal. I contacted Uber Eats and they offered me a $5 credit for the $20 worth of missing food. I told them to forget fobbing me off like that. I suggest that you try somewhere else. By the way, the sandwiches were good; and after the wife cooked, we had enough to eat. Went there in the night 1/4/23 approximately 11:40 pm when the closing time is scheduled till 12. Then when I was told they were closed I said okay and a teenage African American boy came out back and told me to get out of his drive through or he was going to "slime" me out (kill me)and threw up a gang sign at me. This place gets a bad wrap! I'm a fan First off this place takes coupons... There are tons of coupons in the mail every week. You can't expect a gourmet experience people! You also have to remember that a majority of the workers are high school students. So you gotta cut them a little slack. At least they're out there working! I learned from the waitress that you can use multiple coupons on the same trip. Does this make me sound cheap? too bad sometimes I am. A double burger with cheese and fries for $3.99 is a pretty good deal and the food isn't bad. Total different atmosphere compared to before. So it is missing that burger dine experience with waitresses it had before which made it feel like a Steak and Shake. Ordering is faster and food comes out quicker than before. This place is ridiculous went here tonight for shakes Ordered Oreo milkshake, and 2 Nutella. Oreo shake literally had no Oreos in it just vanilla shake with crumbs of Oreo on top only. And had so much ice cream on outside of cup that it slipped when we took out of drink carrier and all the whip cream with Oreo fell out of cup. Nutella shakes both were weird tasting one had three cherries in it. With no chocolate drizzle at all. The other had cherry and a chunk of like a eaten strawberry and cherry looked nasty and old mixed in with also missing the chocolate drizzle Hopefully they did not come off someone else's plate because they sure look like they did which sucks because these were discovered after some of my shake was drunk and I then decided to pour into another cup to see why it tasted like cherry so much with a weird taste. Do not go here during peak times or in between lunch and dinner. If you drive through they will forget items from your order, even when the manager checks it. I'm lactose intolerant and the line was busy so I ordered a hot dog to go along with the burger just in case they forgot no cheese. When we checked it there was no hot dog and the burger had a chunk with cheese on it I had to cut off. I went in to ask for the hot dog and they gave me attitude so I just forgot about it. The best time to go here is after 11pm they have never got our order wrong or missed items. That is why I am giving them 3 stars because this is the culmination of 10 times visiting and 3 times were bad but 7 were great. The 7 times everything was fresh and the guy working the counter once even caught that my burger had cheese so he sent it back and asked them to cook a fresh one with now cheese. read more

Very disappointed with Steak and Shake. I came in to pick up a burger and some shakes as a to go order. I walk in and the restaurant is maybe half full and there are two customers in front of me in the Takhomasak line. The young lady at the register is finishing an order for one person and answering questions on the other person's order. I wait...no greeting. She walks away without a word. I stand there and no one else greets or asks if I need help. After 5 minutes I walk out, go to McDonalds down the street for a burger and to Tanya and Matt's for the shakes. This is a great way to give business to others, hence the 1 star. If I could give 0 stars I would have. I get you might be busy, but I have no clue and common courtesy would be to greet and let your customer know you'll be with them shortly.
