Steam is back- as good as it was years ago. Food properly prepared and well spiced. Great for takeout and fast service.

Pros: Basil shrimp was solid with many vegetables and a good amount of basil. Ribs are solid. Pork belly appetizer is fabulous. Szechuan peppers, garlic, cilantro, and scallions. Would love to see more dishes with this preparation on the menu! Pork dumplings were homemade and came with a homemade dipping sauce Sesame chicken solid though several pieces were a bit tough. Cons Cumin lamb was chewy. Wish it was more similar to the pork belly and less overwhelming cumin flavor. The restaurant feels dirty. Walls are chipped throughout where chairs have come in contact with the walls and with paint literally falling off. This is likely a health code violation in itself as the chipping paint could fall into your food. There are insect/rodent traps inside the dining area. Among other issues. Im surprised they haven't invested in maintaining this Greenwich Ave spot at least adequately. I am really hoping this place ups its game soon before people get sick. Also the owner is opening a new restaurant. Hope he cleans up steam and keeps the new restaurant clean and hygenic as the food has a lot of promise. I was a little hesitant to try this restaurant again based on the previous reviews, but I heard it was under new management and culinary team as of September. And I can confirm - it's so much better! We ordered the Lion's Head Meatballs, Three Pepper Beef, Dragon Eggplant, and fried rice. They were all very delicious and authentic. Steam's menu offers a wide selection of different types of ramen broths & toppings. I decided to give it a try. The ramen was four stars. I love the menu selection of different ramens - miso, shoyu, tonkatsu, and even coconut curry. Plenty of toppings to choose from as well. Design your own combination -- the menu is highly customizable. The chicken based Shanghai wonton soup was a disappointment. All salt no flavor. Plain wontons. Had to add water to the broth - salt salt salt. It was affordable at 5$ but Manchu Garden's wonton soup is better & their portion size is larger. Hopefully, as more people move to CT, there will be increased demand for more restaurants & more choices. When Fuji Mart closed permanently, the area lost one of the few places for bubble tea & Asian groceries. Since then, the effects of the pandemic have impacted businesses, especially restaurants. I love this place for being tasty and not oily, it is thr only somewhat healthy chinese food around. I love their eggplant with basil and tofu. They give a huge portion of tofu seared so well and baby or japanese eggplants, i cannot tell which one they use. I only wish they had put more basil in it. The best part is t he sauce with it. I love bubble tea a lot and will enjoy from any kind. We ordered our usually most successful passion fruit and mocha teas, but it was not tasty at all. We throw them without finishing them. We went to Steam for an early dinner. Since there were eight of us, we were treated to a wide variety of selections from the menu. Everything was very enjoyable. I was especially pleased with the Cumin Lamb with carrot, onion & cilantro. The taste was subtle and not overly spicy. We also enjoyed the Crispy Noodle & Meatball as well as the Black Pepper Beef. Like the other reviews, it's a pretty good place for lunch though subpar at best. I do believe that there should be more easy and casual restaurants like this place! I ordered the shrimp and pork shumai, veggie pad Thai, and the passion fruit boba. The shumai was good but a bit rubbery, but I think it was because the wrapper was thicker than what I'm used to. Veggie pad Thai was flavorful and had a bit of spice, which I liked. I have to say though one complaint I have is the amount of salt/msg that's going into the food. I'm pretty sensitive to those kinds of things so a few hours later, my head was hurting and I was super bloated for a long time--just be prepared for that if you visit this place. Lastly the passion fruit boba. Just to be clear, I'm not a boba enthusiast, this was probably my second or third time getting it. The pearls were definitely over cooked or old, I'm not sure but they were flavorless and too chewy. The tea itself was not sweet, so I thought I had to mix it, but still nothing. I would just recommend getting drinks somewhere else because to me it wasn't really worth it. The place is super small and cramped, even the servers had an awkward time getting the food out. There were tons of takeout orders and it was pretty busy during lunch so there were practically no places to sit inside. Seems like they seem to run out of food easily too, I asked for matcha boba and they said they ran out. The food was interesting and tasty. I had a Thai curry ramen with shrimp and vegetables. The noodles looked hand made, and were really delicious, the shrimp was plentiful and cooked to tender perfection. That dish was not too spicy. My husband had a sesame tofu, that was sweet and sour, that was quite different and flavorful. The restaurant is small, and quite reasonable for being right on Greenwich Ave. We also tried the fried eggplant and Bamboo fish small plates. The spices were very fresh, but a bit spicy for those who cannot handle it, even though we asked for it to be toned down. If you cannot handle spicy, I would avoid it here. Stopped in for a quick bubble tea on my way home! I got the Passionfruit Bubble Tea with the passion fruit exploding bobas. Came out to around 6.50 with tax - a little pricey for some but honestly Steam is one of the only places around here to get bubble tea and it's on Greenwich Ave so it's expected. The people working there are especially kind, welcoming, and very helpful! It's a casual dining place and it's nice to have in this location since Greenwich Ave typically has more fancier/pricier restaurants. The bubble tea was good, the passion fruit was refreshing and it wasn't sweet, which I personally liked - it tasted like real fruit juice. Steam is the best Asian restaurant Greenwich has seen in many years. Our food was hot (as in temperature), appropriately spiced, and tasty. I recommend it even though I won't be going back. Trouble is, I have an allergy to soy and boy do they use soy. We had a chef's special soup over crispy noodles that was loaded with soy, so too were the ribs. Our other problem is that we ordered for delivery between 6:15-6:30 but it arrived at 5:45., which was really too early for us. But give it a try. I had tried Steam a few times when they opened 7/8 years ago in Greenwich and loved their wholesome foods. We moved away so I had not eaten there in the past 5 years. My husband and I were in Greenwich today and decided to eat there as we thought they would serve vegetarian for my husband who ordered the sweet and hour tofu. I ordered the Szechuan beef. We expected the tofu to have been tossed in a wok with a bit of veggies. Well that was far from what we received!! A block of tofu was served without anything but a very substandard sweet and sour sauce and COLD. I mean they did not fry, steam or even microwave the tofu. They just cut up a block of tofu, put some sauce on top and that was it. A restaurant is supposed to "prepare" the food they serve you! This was so shocking that I asked the waiter why didn't they cook the food and I am not quite sure what she said but I it was something to the effect that "you could ask for it to be cooked!!" OK! Why didn't the woman at the counter taking my order ask me if I wanted to have my meal cooked! I lived in SF so I ate at many Chinese, Cantonese and Szechuan restaurants. This had never happened to us anywhere else. My dish was also a first! I don't know what this dish was, but it was more like middle eastern stewed beef chunks with a little bit of veggies thrown in and a sauce similar to an Asian/Mexican sauce. All I can say is that it was not Szechuan. I don't write reviews unless I have a fabulous experience that's worth mentioning or the experience so bad that I like to warn others about what they can expect. Suffice to say, my husband did not eat his meal and I had a few bites because I was hungry. We had to go to the French Bistro up the street to get some deserts- extremely delicious and the service is always top notch. So beware buyer! read more

I ordered the sweet and sour tofu, it was literally 1 piece of uncooked tofu in a pool of sweet and sour sauce, no sides, no rice nothing for $12 and it wasn't even good. The cashiers could not figure out who's order was who's our plates went to two other tables before coming to us, and they did this with every single person who was sitting in the dining area. It started to become funny and also a bit awkward. To top it off I paid $12 for spring rolls I never got. I would have asked for my money back but I honestly just wanted to leave.
