Ya know what I like most about this Jersey Mike's? The fact that it sits conveniently close to my…read moretop two favorite places to buy fries from: Papa Gino's and McD's. I'm being serious. If someone were to ask me what's the difference between this location versus another, it would solely come down to what else is near it. Because I'm a guy who likes to mix-n-match his mains and sides, if you know what I mean. Listen, I love JM's. Loved them ever since the first cheesesteak I ever tasted of theirs. But the one thing the Amherst street location lacks...is a worthwhile place to grab a quick order of fries from. Meanwhile, the Merrimack location is but a hop, skip, and a jump away from completing what I like to call "short order perfection personified." I mean, if I could change one thing about JM's as a franchise, it's that they'd serve fries in addition to chips. But....to each their own, right? Other than that, it's still got all the greatness one can expect from a standard JM's. The Chicken Philly I ordered was cooked to perfection (of course). And I dunno what it is. But it seems like Merrimack restaurants in general hold themselves to a higher standard. So, I would expect nothing less. This may be the place I go to if I'm in the mood for fries with my sammich. For the sheer convenience alone, I'm gonna give Jersey Mike's in Merrimack 5 Chicken Philly's with a side of fries out of 5.

The other sandwich was a buffalo chicken and it was more of the same- dry empty bread roll. Never had this happen at other locations.

Service was good, pleasant and food came from the kitchen promptly. Note that they do not have a full liquor license. We started with the shepherds pie egg rolls, which were quite good. Generous portion and tasty, and an unusual twist on egg roll filling. I had the burger and ordered one with candied bacon which was delicious. I've had better and worse burgers. While the meat patty and toppings were good, the bun was unusual, firm almost hard and frankly not enjoyable. I ate the burger sans bun. Also the fries seemed like they were sitting for a while, a pet peeve of mine. They really need to be fried to order or I won't eat them. If you are going to splurge and eat fries, they have to be good, and sadly these were not. Again, overall we were happy. With a little more attention to detail, this could be a great dining spot.

Full confession upfront here: I feel like a total heel for two reasons. 1.) I realize I haven't…read morewritten a single review in over 1.5 months and I apologize (it's expensive af out there, yo!) and 2.) I've been eating delicious subs from this particular JM location for MONTHS now, yet haven't done a review on why they're so bloody awesome! Allow me to kill two birds with the proverbial stone then. Honestly, this won't be a long review. Most of you probably can ascertain how I feel about JM as a franchise. But for those not "in-the-know", there isn't a single sandwich shop in the Nashua area (to my knowledge) that can even hold a candle to this one. To put it succinctly, the true measure of a sandwich shop is how many different subs you can order from them that you actually enjoy as opposed to reacting like, "yeah....this one's alright." For context, I routinely order at least 3 different subs from here. And whilst Mike's Famous Philly will always hold a special place in my heart, I can aptly say that I almost equally immensely enjoy the tuna and chicken Philly subs as well. So, that really only leaves one other differentiating factor: the location itself. This one's my preferred spot, not only because they're the closest one to where I live; but also because they are generally one of the easiest locations to get into. To briefly elaborate on this, it's how the parking lot is configured. It's a relatively wide open space with two entrances; one of which is on the side that doesn't impede the mainstream traffic on Amherst Street. A crucial feature for us locals who prefer using the back routes to circumvent the vexing backlog of rush hour traffic which continues to plague the vast majority of society to this day. But....I digress. I mean, do I really need to say more? Between the fresh ingredients, consistent execution of orders, and friendly faces, this place slaps hard! Ergo, I'm giving Jersey Mike's on Amherst Street 5 sizzling Philly steaks the other local joints WISH they could emulate out of 5.

Despite being nearly 6 miles from my house, it can be worth the deviation from my routine stop at the 7-11 on Amherst. Apropos of this, there's a little place I happened to spot along the way which, upon first appearance, seems like a hole-in-the-wall pizza joint known only as....Billy's Famous Pizza. After researching their menu courtesy of Yelp, I naturally had to go in and check this place out. Despite the very modest size of the pizza joint itself (not to mention the diminutive dining area), the menu is larger than the average local pizza joint. This place has all the essentials: wings, burgers, chicken sammiches, pizza (obviously), copious types of sides, not to mention almost any classification of subs you could think of. On this day, I decided to debut with my all time favorite sub - the steak & cheese. The best way I could describe this style of sandwich is a tube sub. If you saw the pic, you know what I'm talking about. But don't let its subtle appearance of subterfuge fool you. Because this sub is packed with plenty of meat and various vegetative innards of your choosing. Not to mention, they have a much more "beefed up" version known as "the steak bomb", if you're into that sort of thing. Now then, taste wise...I'd wager this sub is on par with D'Angelo (or Papa Gino's if you nasty). So, whilst not quite earth shattering, it's about a 7 out of 10 for me. I also tried the fries, which...they offer you plenty of in a brown paper bag. Actually...they double bagged it for good measure. Anyways, these were passable and innocuous enough to warrant a 7 out of 10 as well. I'd like to personally offer a shout-out to the incredibly cordial and friendly staff who served me that day. The counter ladies were wicked friendly and even addressed me by my name. Always a sweet touch! As you can probably imagine, this place is best for take-away rather than dining in. Though, the latter option is perfectly fine, so long as you arrive during a slow afternoon toward the middle or end of the week as I did. Near as I can figure, there's maybe 5 or 6 small tables in there, at best. In any event, I'd highly recommend take-away over dining in. One day I shall return. At which point, I wouldn't mind trying out some of their wings or perhaps even a tuna salad sub if I'm so audacious. For now, Billy's Famous Pizza gets 4 well packed cheesesteak tube subs out of 5.
