This is a great bar, especially for the location. You got the Bay breeze with your buzz going while you shootin' some billiards. And you got sports in the background. The bartender home qurl was cool too. She had great service and remembered us even after a couple of weeks when we went here for a work outing. I wish we found this place sooner and not towards the end of the project. But it is what it is, and that's why we write these reviews to put y'all on! There was also this food truck posted up outside but the couple of times we went here, it was closed. It must be an after work thing or at lunch time. We would go in the evening so not sure. Cool place! Went on a Friday, the bartender was like a sweet mother. Very kind gave us some extra cheesy chez its. Drinks were strong and fairly priced. First time here and when we walked in I liked the vibes, I love bikers and everybody seemed friendly. After 2 beers I go to the bar and the bartender is talking to friends? Two more people pull up a seat and she serves them first. That's cool, I'm patiently waiting. The bartender looks me in my eyes and goes back to her friends to talk. We make Fridays "Steamies" day. My colleagues and I have met here for almost five years to decompress after work on Fridays. It is everything you want in a favorite dive bar. Unpretentious, fun, a jukebox with good music, and staff who know your name! Kiva is our absolute favorite - and exactly what you expect from a dive bar bartender! Quick with a wink and some good humor, engaging and just super cool. I'm not sure if we would go here if not for her! Showing up here was just so random. We were walking the streets of San Mateo looking for a bar that serves tequila. Our destination was much further than Steamies but when we saw Steamies, we stopped in. The time we had here was unexpected but absolutely welcomed. I recently moved to the Bay Meadows community with my wife, and though our job descriptions, Michelin-starred restaurant Yelp reviews, and cupboard baking ingredients (Doppio Zero, anyone?) may suggest that we're a perfect fit for the immaculate manicured lawns, hoity-toity luxe cafes, and microcreamery ice cream (seriously, what even is a microcreamery?!) shops of the neighborhood, I'm at heart a meat-n-potatoes, Texas Hold'em, classic rock kinda guy. As such, imagine my delight when I discovered this little gem of a dive nestled along Pacific Boulevard, right past the sparkling roofs of SurveyMonkey, Guidewire, and whatever pipe dream incubators are monopolizing the prime real estate immediately west of the train tracks. Steamies is a cozy, one-room bar that has somehow escaped the creeping Googlization of the Bay. It hosts everything you need in a neighborhood drinking establishment--there's a jukebox, a pool table, a dart board, and even a faux fireplace to enhance the ambience--while harboring none of the entitlement Silicon Valley brings. The bathroom hosts amateur artwork earnest enough to warrant a second look. They're open until 1:30-2am most nights, except for Sundays (when they close at midnight). Come for the four TVs that prioritize Bay Area sports teams, but stay for the bartenders friendly enough to switch one to another game if you ask nicely. Not sure why, but I feel like I need to start this with an apology to my coworker. Despite how much he loves this place (apparently, he comes here pretty regularly), I can't say I share the same sentiments about Steamies. However, if it makes a difference, it's not necessarily for the typical sort of reason you might imagine. Now, when folks on here say that Steamies is a true neighborhood/locals dive bar, trust that they know what they're talking about. I mean, it has to be considering how seemingly hard it is to find. Despite having passed through this area countless times in my life, I never even knew there was a bar around here (it's at the end of a cul-de-sac/dead end that's parallel to Hillsdale Blvd). While the inside of Steamies isn't all that large, it's got a pretty interesting vibe to it. Less in the quirky, funky sort of way and more in the "someone opened a bar in the HOA's clubhouse"-kind of way. Extremely random, I know, but fitting (in my eyes). It also isn't divey in the traditional sense - no beer-soaked carpets or tables sticky from years of spilled liquor, but it definitely has that low-key, no shits given kind of vibe, which is great. Since it was my buddy's turn to buy for the group, I'm not sure how their prices are, but my coworker has mentioned it's pretty standard. At the very least, that would make my pour of Maker's Mark neat pretty fair for the money. So why the two stars then, given that, as well as the friendly service? Easy - the air wreaked of cigarette smoke. Admittedly, I didn't see anyone smoking inside, so it might have been from the folks smoking outside, but regardless, it was less than ideal to feel like I was sitting in a casino in Vegas without actually being in a casino in Vegas... All in all, I can easily see why my coworker likes stopping in for a drink on the way home or for a nightcap, like what we came here for. They aren't too shabby for those that live nearby, but if I'm in San Mateo, I'd be more inclined to head over to 3rd Ave/downtown instead. Three stars overall, but minus one for now for the smokiness. If I'm back and it turns out it was just a one time thing, I'd be happy to bump it back up. read more

Steamies is your quintessential neighborhood dive. The regulars look like they have been on those barstools since it opened in 1493 B.C. It's tidy but rundown. (You could say that about some of the clientele! Ha!) They have an electronic jukebox that plays music videos so there is that. Drinks are cheap. Perfect local place to get a pint. read more

It was so hot and steamy in here! That's why It's called Steamies for a reason! We came in a hot day in the bay (100 degrees) due to the fires... And this was not the place to drink, just because they had the window AC in the back of the bar and the rest got nothing. I was sweating drinking my beer. It was hot and then they finally opened the window. My friend lives like 2 houses down. Steamies is located in a weird part of the street... At the dead end of residential homes and apartments. You'll never expect a bar to be there. Definitely very divey. Not sure about pricing because my friend bought us a round. read more

DAN THE MAN! my favorite bartender!! this place is a hole-in-the-wall, dirty, grimy bar located in the corner of the middle no where. but i love it! my girlfriends and i are frequent customers, especially when we want to have those girls night out, but we're not in the mood to go clubbing. we always have a good time here because dan hooks it up! he's so nice and gives us really good suggestions on what to order and mixes up some pretty awesome shooters. although, one night i came here with my friend nikki and we were both just chilling, minding our own business when this drunk-tard comes us to us, stares us down and asks if we were japanese prostitutes. first of all, we're not japanese...and even if we were, WHY THE HELL would we be prostitutes. me being really offended called him an ignorant fC#k and he has the nerve to say "i've lived with japanese people". I drove 6 miles off course trying to find this place. 3 phone calls later with a guided escort who then stood on the side of the road looking for me, I found Steamie's. It was worth the trip though ... then again, it's 1 of 2 bars in Belmont so our options were limited. Drinks are cheap and they have Blue Moon on tap - yay for that - though it was warm by the time I finally arrived. I needed it after getting reorged again, for the 4th time this year at work. It was pretty empty for a Tuesday at 5:00 ... so a good place to watch a crystal clear HDTV and be able to catch up with friends. The Key lime Martini which was very tasty. A short walk from the CalTrain station, Steamies was a fun place to have a drink while waiting for a ride. The bartender was friendly, quick, and could mix a good cocktail, even making my vodka Collins from scratch. Apparently I quirked an eyebrow at that, because she commented that "guys your age aren't used to seeing it done like that." Price for a well drink plus a call drink? $7.50. Plus a really good tip for calling me "young". Love it. A pool table, 2 dartboards, bartop video games, and a couple TVs round out the entertainment. The decor and atmosphere were fun and casual, apparently a step up from their pre-renovation motif. A few oddities still haunt the corners, so keep your eyes out for a little fun. Yay! This place saved us on Sunday night... After picking up my poor cousin and her coworker from the airport (they just flew in from New Jersey on their way to the Philippines... only to find out that their flight got cancelled) we needed somewhere to throw back a few and chill. Busting out my trusty yelp mobile didn't help much because (darn it) it was like 1030pm on a sunday night. Everywhere was closed! Thankfully the sweet bartender at Steamies said they'd stay open for us and gave us directions. Its your typical neighborhood dive bar, sans dirty old guys. The decor was neat, they had a juke box and a pool table, and best of all... $4 beers :) Now I'm from San Jose/Milpitas area so I'm forever paying $8-$10 for a glass of beer at Parcel 104, Dave & Busters, etc... paying $6 is considered "happy hour" in my book, so $4 was HELLA HAPPY HOUR. hahaah I got a bottle of Stella to start and then a Mad Hatter (guinness with pear cider and a shot of chambord floated on top) and the super nice bartender lady gave me the rest of the bottle of guinness for free! I LOVE GUINNESS. Definitely will be back. And definitely going to keep tipping big :P read more

We recently went to a going away party for my husband's ex coworker here. Parking is easy, prices are reasonable, and drinks are well made. Although, as I found out, the drinks here are STRONG. I had always wondered about this place. I thought it was pretty run-down skeevy alcoholic biker type of place. Then someone from work arranged an after work drinkathon here and I was pleasantly surprised. We were pretty much the only people in there when we first got there, so we took over pool, darts, the jukebox, etc. Also, the decor is not as shabby as I expected. Lots of nice racetrack memorabilia around. Good beer selection. A little hard to get to, with the on-ramps to larger streets limiting the types of tricks you can pull to get into the parking lot. I have been there once since the remodel. It's great to see the old bar with a new face. When my Dad, Steamie, started it in the late '50s it was a racetrack bar. Full of jockeys, trainers, and race fans. It went down hill the past 5-10 years with bad ownership. I'm glad the new owners have taken the time to revive Steamie's. I was looking for a place to watch the NHL finals (Canucks vs Bruins). We decided to venture into a sports bar to get a drink and watch the game. I looked up Yelp to find a place and Steamies came up. The location is awkward since the listed address doesnt allow you to enter on the street listed so you need to loop around. Steamies is a clean bar with great drinks, friendly bartenders, 2 dart boards, three 1080p high def TVs, an Internet jukebox and even Nintendo Wii. Did I mention the place is clean? My first-ever visit to Steamie's took place very recently and well after the remodeling and general cleanup that others have mentioned. While a bit sterile (I tend to like my bars on the grimy side, so this is a purely aesthetic call and given an apparently somewhat sordid history, I don't blame'm for going all superclean), this place delivers with $1 PBRs during happy hour. Sure, they are in mini-glasses (think it's 8oz or so), but those glasses are chilled so they have a nice cold dew on them and the beer is cold, cold, cold! Pretzels on the bar, always. This alone would be enough, but... They have a Wii hooked up. On my first visit I had an awesome time bowling with the bartender. We also had some tennis action and the Miis were set up as left-handed, but I adapted and was still able to squeak out a victory from my weak side. I would have played more with her but then I got into some tequila-drinking with what appeared to be a couple of regulars and missed the 6:08 train. And the 6:17, and about, oh 4 more trains. Too much fun sitting around and listening to the nice jukebox and watching some ballgames on the sweet 1080 TVs. Oh, and there were darts! I was not sober enough to play well. I did finally manage to catch a train and it was one of those nights where I have no idea how I made it home safe and sound on my bike. All I remember is trying not to puke on the train (success) and then weaving down The Embarcadaro and nearly wrecking it right in front of the ballpark. Since this rather rowdy experience, I have returned several times for some much mellower drinking. I usually roll in the door about quarter-to 6 or so and see how many minibeers I can get down before I can hear that 6:08 train. Steamie's is so close to the station that you can hear the train coming, leap on up from your barstool, run to bike, pedal furiously alongside the tracks, and still make it to the platform on time for... "ALL ABOARD!" Due to all of these factors, Steamie's is my current #1 drinking establishment. Highly recommended, without reservation. Also notable is that there are lots of "real bikes" here, meaning loud motorcycles and much discussion of same. I got a little ribbing for riding my little 10-speed, but not too bad. I generally really like bikers of all varieties; they are some of the friendliest people around! read more

What's not to like? It's a dive bar. After a full day dealing with 24-year-olds with way too much money, it's nice to find a real joint. Limited draft selection, but the Big Daddy IPA suited me just fine. Little tricky to get to, you have to go through the neighborhood and down a deadend street. This place is so great! It's definitely my new favorite spot in San Mateo. Greg, the owner is super nice, the crowd is a nice mixture of different walks of life, the atmosphere is clean, cozy and welcoming. All in all, it's a perfect neighborhood bar. Got in to a conversation with Greg about unusual kinds of drinks and was impressed to discover that he knew how to make a "duck fart" (don't ask why I know what that is). The drinks are inexpensive, but strong and well crafted. Together my friend and I had two beers and a cocktail and were out the door for less than $20, including tip. Fair warning, this place is small! It's definitely not the place to come with a huge crowd, but it's an awesome spot to come with a smaller group. I do believe I've found the spot for birthday drinks this year. read more

UPDATE - FRAUD ALERT As if my recent experience wasn't bad enough, I woke the next morning to find that, not only had my credit card been charged WAY more than the receipt I have (which, in itself is far more than it cost for the drinks I actually ordered, but that's on me), but there were two additional charges for $100-plus at a local gas station. It seems as if Steamie's now offers their horrible bartending with a side of credit card fraud. Or course, I reported it to my bank's fraud division. I hope they follow through and prosecute the people who did it (as if I don't know who it was). So I if you don't believe my review of the service and still want to go Steamie's, all I can say is pay with cash. read more
