With there not being many good sports bars options in San Mateo, this place has always made up for it. This bar has the Irish vibes, mixed with an older crowd. The bartenders are super down to earth, and service is typically efficient and fast. In certain nights they have live music, a pool table, and an outdoor area if you want some fresh air. This is a good spot if you're looking for a place to watch the SF Giants, Warriors, or 49ers. They'll also play other big prime time games. I so badly want to give this place a good review but sadly I cannot. A group of friends and I came for open mic karaoke on a Thursday, and while the bartenders were sweet, the karaoke DJ/emcee needs to go. I don't know why he felt like he had to be on his high horse, but he was the most rude man/individual I've ever encountered at a bar. Examples: 1. I asked if I could join the karaoke wait and he shooed me off stage without reasoning or patience. 2. A friend next asked if she can fill in for our other friend as she went to the bathroom and he rudely rejected her and skipped her song. 3. He then proceeded to kick someone off stage for holding the microphone "incorrectly." I'm sorry to say, but if you think you're that important, you need your attitude checked. We will gladly take our business elsewhere if he continues to work there. Description: middle-aged, bald male. Worked on Thursday 1/29/26. Left a sour impression on lots of people and was noticeable as we all packed our things and left the bar. I'd also like to reiterate that a machine can do this man's job (every other karaoke bar I've been to does this). I've visited St James several times over the years, usually to hear friends playing live music. The place is huge with lots of great seating areas. Great bar, tasty food, friendly staff. Tonight I ordered the Cowboy Burger. Hearty and satisfying. The fries were nice, although the temp was lukewarm. I had room for dessert and made a wise choice with the decadent Chocolate Lava Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream. I walked around (inside) and realized "I need to organize a group event here for friends!" Great ambiance and friendly staff. They have large enclosed patio area that's mostly covered but gets some sunlight with a full bar and lots of TVs. This could be good for large groups. Had the cowboy burger and it tasted as expected. The onion ring stayed crispy in the burger and the veggies were fresh. French fries stayed crisp as well. What a hidden little gem in Belmont! Now you know I love a good dive bar. Give me a little element with grit, some colorful regulars, and a potential for nearly anything to happen and I'm a happy girl! This bar was pretty packed on a cold, rainy Friday night. I came for the live music, but was drawn to the promise of tiki drinks. When you first step inside this place, it's got the great energy of Winter's Tavern in Pacifica: very pub forward, tons of seating and screens, lovely chatter from friendly sports voyeurs. Outside is a whole other vibe: cozy firepit seating, tons of tiki bar places to lounge, and a wonderful place to host parties. It was so packed outside, I didn't dare wander around to play photographer. But when I made my way to the bathroom I was surprised to see pool tables (being used), active games of darts, and strangers becoming close friends. The crowd was mixed: barely legal bar goers enjoyed some Taylor Swift on the dance floor, while folks who likely had grandchildren at home also showed us some lovely moves in the front of the bar while listening to Electric X Dance Band. And just as promised, the night ended with a gaggle of Sheriffs to clean up the after effects of intoxication, probably drug use, and a group brawl of some sort in the street. I will say security was quick to respond, and so were the Belmont Sheriffs, and all was handled in a friendly manner. So, not a boring way to kick off the weekend before Christmas. Auntie Ligaya was in town during her birthday and the Santos sisters planned a night of dinner and dancing to celebrate her special day. They chose to go to ST. JAMES GATE BAR & RESTAURANT, a spot to where Auntie Sol had taken them before. Mom encouraged me to join their night out on Friday, April 25, 2025, to celebrate my birthday, too. Z and I decided to go. $10 entrance fee kicks in after 8, so reservations were made for 7:30 PM. Z and I found parking right in front, arriving at around 7:25 PM. From the front, the venue appeared quite small. Once we were inside, though, I realized that the bar was pretty substantial in size with a small main dining area, stage and dance floor to the right of the entrance and a big bar and pool table on the left. There is also an outdoor bar and patio that looks about the same size as the building. Slowly, the place got busier with patrons of all ages. On the night of our visit, St. James Gate was fairly clean, including the women's restroom. Upon entry, we quickly found the table where most of our party was seated. They were UNHAPPY because the staff could not find any record of our reservations for a table against the wall, next to the front door. This was strike 1 of the night. Below are most of the food items that we ordered that evening: Parmesan Truffle Fries ($12.95/full basket) - Very good; served piping hot and perfectly crispy. Basket French Fries ($9.95/full basket) - Another basket of golden crispy fries that were tasty even without the parmesan and truffe flavour. Good Morning Burger, substituted French fries for tater tots ($18.95 + $3.00 for sub tater tots) - Both Sisa and Z ordered this and gave the dish two thumbs up. Honey Bacon Cheeseburger, substituted French fries for onion rings ($18.95 + $3.00 for sub onion rings) - This was Auntie Ligaya's order which she enjoyed. Skirt Steak ($28.95) - Auntie Selvy, Marialucia, Mom, and I ordered the Skirt Steak. When our plates were first served to us, all of our steaks were overcooked. Mom and others also said that their side of grilled brussel sprouts tasted burnt. There was much back and forth over the brussel sprouts, the steaks, and even the A1 sauce bottles (the first was empty, the second tasted really off) that really upset Mom. Initially, our waitress pretty much just told us to deal or order something else because there was "nothing that could be done" to fix the plates. After at least twenty minutes, an off-duty manager came to our table and resolved the matters, but it was a bit late. That was strike 2. The Marshall Law Band was playing live music that night. They didn't seem to be able to read the crowd well because quite often, they would quickly empty the dance floor with song choices that no one wanted to dance to. Due to this, Auntie Ligaya was not having much fun. Neither was Mom, so we left some time after 11. Strike 3. I have never left a bar so early before. Not the best first impression, but not the worst. St. James Gate appears to be a spot that packs with locals who don't want to go all the way to San Francisco or San Jose to dance and drink. This is actually a pretty cool tiki lounge bar to check out. Pretty amazed on the layout and how everything was well presented inside. Arrived on a Friday and there is a live band playing. You also have outdoor seating and it wasnt busy at all around 8pm. Bartender and staff are really nice. Menu has a lot of good options to choose from especially the sample platters! The bacon tator tots did taste a bit stale not sure if it was fried for too long or what but it was good overall. Great place to go if you want to go for a quick bite, watch the game, or for a drink! What questioned me is that there was a $5 cover upfront. To my surprise, it is actually very cute inside! They offer live music and dancing on the weekends, and they even have a tiki bar with fire pits /in the back outside. I tried 3 different drinks while I was there and I liked them all! *Bamboo (Suntory Toki Japanese whiskey, fresh pineapple juice, orgeat, tiki bitters, and lime juice) It came in a beautiful green tiki glass with a slice of fresh pineapple juice. It was very refreshing! *Pasion de Mezcal ( El Silencio mezcal, passion fruit puree and fresh lime juice with a tajin rim) I'm a sucker for passion fruit so I had to order this margarita. It was sour and spicy from the tajin...delicious! *Kiwi Sour (Cane Rum, kiwi syrup, lime juice, Midori, egg white) I'm not a rum fan, so I substituted Suntory Toki whiskey. Came here for Happy Hour. One bartender told me they were changing the menu and not offering it. I spoke with the owner who said they were. Lumpia was good, cheese fries wasn't worth it for $10 and chicken tenders came out cold. We moved to sit outside in the back. Service was slow with only one waitress for both outside and inside the bar. The heat lamp kept turning off so it wasn't enjoyable sitting outside (cold). Best part of the night was playing BINGO. We were at a work event near here and were looking for somewhere fun to stop into- this place was it! They do have a good happy hour menu, with excellent drink and food prices. After a snack, we went off to the work event. Wouldn't you know it, we ended up back here a second time, following the event! There was live music this time, even. This restaurant and bar has such a lovely setting, well two settings actually, since the outdoor space has a totally different feel and atmosphere, more like a tiki lounge with the decor and lighting. The inside area has a bar with TVs, a pool table, a stage area with a small dance floor surrounded by tables and seating, an ornate ceiling, and photos of musicians lining the walls. There was no cover charge when we came to dine in on a Saturday evening around 7:30pm. And at 9:00pm, we were entertained by live music on stage, Paper Thin playing a range of rock, rnb, and soul tunes including Doobie Brothers' Listen to the Music, Cake by the Ocean, and even some Santana, sounds of the keyboard, guitar, flute, saxophone, and vocals. The food and drinks were so tasty. We got the skirt steak with grilled brussel sprouts and steak chimichurri with shishito peppers, and both plates came with fries on the side. The steak pieces were juicy and flavorful, no sauce needed, it was so satisfying. And the sides and veggies were delicious as well, especially those brussels which weren't too salty. We also got the gin-toki and strawberry basil lemonade, a nice sweetness that I enjoyed. Service was great too, friendly and attentive to our needs during our visit. We came here with a big group--17 of us celebrating my daughter's college graduation--and needed a place that could handle a crowd without the downtown chaos. This spot delivered. We were seated on the back patio, which was surprisingly roomy and had a laid-back, almost hidden-gem vibe. Service: It started off a bit rocky. They also have pool table and darts to keep you entertained through your visit. Pool table you will need quarters but the bartender can always exchange your bills too! This is my secret hideout. It's surprising how few people know about this place - even folks who have lived in the area for many years. First came here many years ago - but have been a regular these past 3/4 years. If you are looking for one of the most comprehensive collections of whiskies, bourbons, scotch and ryes in the Bay Area - this may be one of those spots. They have maybe 400. The bartending staff is amazing, and will always find something that you will like if you ask. They have another secret - it's the whiskey tasting and steak dinner every month, and boy is it worth it. Get to try 5 whiskies with an excellent steak dinner. Have done it 4 times and keep bringing more people to it. They also have a great entertainment roster of bingo and karaoke nights during weekdays with live bands on the weekend. Credit Card Fraud-Bland Food-Poor Service Myself and two friends showed up on a Friday evening on a friend's suggestion after attending the Whimsy Market at Devil's Canyon. The waiter asked for a credit card before we ordered, apparently to prevent any dine and ditch situations. It sets such a bad tone before a meal but I agreed. We were served tasteless bar food and up charged for a side. The place was more than half empty. We waited a long time for our bill and had to flag down two servers before we could pay. Our group paid for our meals and we left. The next day there was a charge on my card from St James Gate. The charge was not one of our previous nights totals and I paid with cash anyway. After several phone calls and two messages, no one from the restaurant reached out to me about the charge. I had to call my credit card company and based on the incident, they did not deem it as a mistake to be corrected by the restaurant. They deemed it as fraud. Maybe St James Gate has done this in the past and it triggered and alert with the credit card company, I don't know. What I do know is that it has taken many hours and a lot of energy to file the report, obtain a new credit card, change the credit card information for recurring merchants and finally write this review to warn others. Save your time and money. Go somewhere else. read more

Wife's work had a retirement party for a colleague and this place was perfect. Tiki bar motif that was really nice. The parking was plentiful, they had a band inside, and the people were friendly. The service was very well done. Servers were not difficult to find and were responsive and friendly. The food was mostly typical bar fare but very good. I especially liked the jalapeños poppers. I've been coming to St. James Gate for years, and it has always been my go-to spot for a great time--but throwing my birthday party there this year took it to a whole new level! From the moment we started planning, the owner and staff went above and beyond to accommodate every detail. We hosted a daytime dance party on their stunning tiki patio, and it was absolutely magical. Instead of the usual platters, they worked with us to create a delicious hor d'oeuvres spread for our guests--and everything was perfect. The staff, all dressed professionally in black, were warm, attentive, and totally on top of everything. The bartenders were first class, and the custom cocktails and mocktails crafted by the bar manager were a huge hit. Diana, their party coordinator, is a true gem--she made sure every detail was flawless. We set up beautiful backdrops, had amazing music, and the vibes were just incredible. All our guests kept saying it was the best party and venue they've been to locally. I'm currently on a 40th birthday tour around the Bay Area (lol). Our friend chose this bar as his venue to celebrate this special occasion. The folks at St James blocked off a few areas outside for our party. They also set up (typical bar) food in chafing dishes and the waitresses did an incredible job taking our drink orders throughout the night. The TVs with March madness games on were an added bonus. The bar is tiki themed and it was a fun vibe. We enjoyed the fire pits as it did get cool as the night progressed. Every time the train came by it shook the entire building. I'm taking one star off of my review for the state of the women's bathroom. There were two stalls and the one I went into was absolutely disgusting. Also, they were out of the coconut mojito advertised on their drink menu. So I ordered a regular mojito, the first one was the best mojito I've ever had. It was so good, I had to run it back. The second one was not like the first- it had the strongest fake lime flavor. This place was packed when we left. Folks were enjoying the live band (Saturday night) and pool tables. I used to work at a restaurant so I try to be generous. The bar was busy but not slammed. The dinner crowd was not there. I wanted to order something to go but there was no hostess at the stand and I could see the servers cleaning chatting in the back. I have never been here before so I try to give some credit but nobody came to take an order to to greet. This is probably one of those places in the suburbs that relies on people to come to it because in general it is the suburbs. That aside this is very discourteous and inefficient so I just turned around and walked out. When I have worked at places I have told people so and so will be right with you. Ambiance is great.. amazing what they have done with the place. Fun band with good dancing and a lively crowd. But the bartender in the patio was terrible. I asked for a martini, which is a very simple drink, and it was the worst... I had him do it again and it was at least drinkable but the worst martini I've ever had. Our friends had similar issues. My first time coming here and it is definitely such a vibe! Inside is a typical English looking pub with a pool table but outside transport you to some tropical magical dream. Not only was the service amazing but the food, for bar food, was top notch! My favorite was definitely the firecracker wings and gin toki was so light and refreshing! I didn't realize there was a giant tiki bar with live music so close to Burlingame. Good burgers, sandwiches, salads, and onion rings.
